Velma Denny

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Velma George Denny, 86, of 272 Park Springs Road, died Monday, June 19, 2000 at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born July 30, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Will George and Sally Myers George.

She was married icon to George Clyde Denny, who predeceased her.

She had resided for 53 years on Park Springs Road, and had been a patient at Piney Forest Health Care Center since 1998.

She was a member of Providence Baptist Church where she taught the Primary Department and sang in the church choir. She was a housewife and a member of Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Denny Saunders of Danville; one brother, Curtis George of Gretna; two grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two step-sons, James and Edward Denny.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday from Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at her daughter's residence, 1743 Arrowhead Lane.

Addie Burnette

DURHAM, N.C. - Addie Jane Tolbert Burnette, 79, died Saturday, June 24, 2000 at Treyburn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Born in Leaksville, N.C., she was the daughter of William and Betty Jane Bibee Tolbert.

She lived in Danville most of her life. She was a spinner for Dan River Mills.

Survivors include three sons, Charles of Blairs, Va., Danny of Calleo, Va. and Ricky of Richmond, Va.; four daughters, James B. Schuldiner of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Betsy B. Thompson of Durham, Anne B. Rimmer of Hurdle Mills and Susan B. Arthur of Danville, Va.; one brother, William Tolbert of Waycross, Ga.; 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one son, Joe, and her husband, Richard.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from St. Marks Pentecostal Holiness Church in Dannville with the Rev. Henry W. Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from Monday afternoon through Tuesday at 1392 David Giles Lane, Blairs.

Hattie Cassell

EDEN, N.C. - Hattie Cordelia Rea Cassell, 93, of 1317 E. Meadow Road, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

Born in Preston, Va., she was a retired Postal Clerk for the U.S. Postal Service.

Survivors include two sons, Paul F. Cassell of Danville and Donald Cassell of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; one step daughter, Ruby Burnette of Eden; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Dan River Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home.

Church Easley

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Elizabeth Church Easley, 78, of 105 Roper Lane, Chapel Hill, and formerly of Callands, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Britthaven Nursing Home after 6 1/2 years of declining health. She had been a resident of Britthaven since 1994.

Born March 26, 1922 in Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Charles Armstead Church and Deborah Bailey Church.

She was married icon to Robert Spruce Easley Jr., who predeceased her on Sept. 10, 1984. She was a homemaker and a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. She lived most of her life in Callands.

Survivors include one daughter, Gwen Easley Willock of Chapel Hill; one son, Robert Easley III of Youngsville; two sisters, Charlotte Church Neill of Danville, Va., and Edna Church Wright of Keysville, Va.; and two grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one brother, Armstead Church and one sister, Linda Church Shelton.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from Highland Burial Park with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr., and the Rev. Ronald Lewis officiating.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Slade

RUFFIN, N.C. - Willie Edna "Bigga Ma" Slade, of 8143 Park Springs Road died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Caswell County and was a member of Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she served with the senior choir and the Missionary Department. She was a member of the Pride of Locust Hill Chapter No. 624, Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Y. Slade of Suitland, Md.; two sisters, Claudia McNeil of Alexandria, Va. and Ruby Bell Graves of Ruffin; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory L. Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, 115 Holderby St., Reidsville, N.C.

Laura Wilson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Laura Barker Crumpton Wilson, 74, of 2038 U.S. Hwy. 158 West, died Sunday, June 25, 2000 at the residence of her daughter, following a brief illness.

Born March 23, 1926 in Person County, N.C., she was the daughter of Stephen Barker and Edna Taylor Barker.

Prior to her retirement, she worked for Burlington Industries.

She was a member of Community Baptist Church and she was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Crumpton of West Yanceyville; three sons, Robert H. Crumpton of Burlington, Barry J. Crumpton of Ringgold, Va., and Benny N. Crumpton of West Yanceyville; one sister, Nannie Mae Webster of Providence; and five brothers, Hugh Barker of Blanch, Cecil Barker of Reidsville, Allen Barker of Chapel Hill, Jack Barker of Reidsville and Yancey Barker of Providence, and ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one son, Randy L. Crumpton, two sisters and two brothers.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Community Baptist Church with the Rev. John Gentry officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Community Baptist Church and at other times at the residence of her son, Benny Crumpton, 2038 U.S. Hwy. 158 West, Yanceyville.

Marley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harry L. Soyars

ROSE HILL, N.C. - Harry Leonard Soyars, age 77, of 231 Huffman Road, Rose Hill, N.C. died Monday, June 26, 2000 at Sampson Memorial Hospital, Clinton, N.C.

Born February 21, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Henry L. Soyars and Minny Fitzgerald Soyars. Mr. Soyars was predeceased by his wife Nannie Wilson Soyars and a brother, Lloyd Soyars. Following his retirement from J.P. Stevens he raised exotic birds.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirley Jean Soyars of Butner, N.C.; a sister, Vera Bailess of Gretna; sister-in-law, Sylvia Wilson of Hurt; special friend, Olene Shotwell of Rose Hill, N.C.; Special friends children; Diane Williams of Greensboro, N.C., Randy Shotwell of Rose Hill, N.C. and Chris Shotwell of Rose Hill, N.C.; 4 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2000 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Brian Faison. Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday, prior to the service from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Strader

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Johnny "Pete" Strader, 90, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the Alamance Health Care, Burlington, where he had been a resident for the past 13 months.

Born May 15, 1910, in Rockingham County, he was a son of Hoy L. Strader and Dora Belle Dabbs Strader.

He was married icon to Edna Stanley Strader, who predeceased him. He spent most of his life in Yanceyville, where he was a farmer and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three sons, James E. Strader of Mebane, Walter Ray Strader and Herman L. Strader, both of Yanceyville; four daughters, Kathleen S. Wray of Pelham, Margaret Oakes and Mildred S. Thompson, both of Danville, and Carolyn S. Weiss of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Capheus Strader of Pelham; one sister, Luna Belle Poindexter of Ruffin; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Bobby L. Strader.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Perry Ross and the Rev. Larry Durham officiating.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Margaret Oakes, 58 Morris Ave., Danville, Va.

J. Kenneth White

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - J. Kenneth White, 72, of Beechwood Road, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Born in Danville, Va., he was a son of A.C. and Pearl McGuire White Sr.

He was married icon to Annabelle S. White, who survives. He had lived in Asheville for the last 25 years and was a member of the Asheville Home Builders Association. He was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church where he was an active member of the choir.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Michael White of Black Mountain and Rick White of Bowling Green, Ky.; one brother, Richard White of Powhatten, Va.; two sisters, Helen Jackson and Irene Holley, both of Danville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Ellen.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beverly Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Timothy A. Lolley officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

A viewing will be held throughout the day Thursday at Williams Funeral Service, Asheville, N.C.
