Darlene Gibbs

EDEN, N.C. — Darlene P. Gibbs, 49, of 703 Moncure St. died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at her home.
She was a native of Rockingham County and a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Brandi Renee Gibbs and Hazel Ann Gibbs, both of Eden; one son, Johnny Shane Holland of Stoneville; one sister, Carolyn Purdy of Axton, Va.; two brothers, Billy Purdy of Danville, Va. and Phillp Purdy of Eden; and one granddaughter.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Overlook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Phillip Purdy, 758 Davis St.

Cynthia New Oakley

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Cynthia New Oakley, 39, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina died Saturday, September 2, 2000, at NC Baptist Hospital.
Born December 22, 1960 in Durham, NC she was the daughter of William J. New, who survives, and Jackie Pryor New.
She was married icon to Allen T. Oakley, who survives.
Mrs. Oakley was born and raised in Durham, NC and worked a number of years at BB & T Bank of Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. She died after a lengthy and heroic battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up in memory of Mrs. Oakley at the JC Raulston Arboretum, located on the campus of NC State University, Raleigh, NC. In addition to her husband of the residence and her father of Durham survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Martha New Milam and Dan Milam of Durham, NC; father-in-law and mother-in-law, J. Louie Oakley and Connie P. Oakley of Providence, NC; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Melanie Orton of Burlington, N.C.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Ellen Cooper of Graham, N.C.; three special nephews and two special nieces.
A funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2000, at Providence Baptist Church, Providence, NC, with the Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, Providence, NC.
The family will receive friends at the home of Louie & Connie Oakley, 7003 Old Highway 86 North, Providence, NC, on Sunday afternoon and Tuesday following the funeral.
Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville is in charge of arrangements.

David Stansbury

PELHAM, N.C. — David Louis Stansbury, 53, of 318 Hoskins Road died suddenly Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at his residence.
Born June 28, 1947, he was the son of Willie "Buck" Stansbury and Allie Shue Stansbury, who survives.
He was married icon to Bernadette Fratantoni Stansbury, who predeceased him.
He lived his life in Texas and North Carolina, where prior to retirement he was employed as a welder and auto body mechanic. He was of the Catholic Faith.
In addition to his mother of Pelham survivors include two sons, Vincent Nicholas Stansbury of Pelham and David Louis Stansbury Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Deborah S. Wells of Pelham; and one brother, Sherman Watts of Danville, Va.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 484 Red Marshall Road.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of all arrangements.

Benjamin Brown

RUFFIN, N.C. — Benjamin Amson Brown, 82, of 820 Perkinson Road died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Rockingham County, he was the son of Jack W. Brown and Sophronia Strader Brown.
He was married icon to Edna Mitchell Brown, who predeceased him.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving in World War II and a longtime member of Happy Home Church. He retired from American Tobacco Co. after 33 years. He was a loving father, grandfather and avid gardener.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Brown O’Mara of Reidsville; one brother, Jack W. Brown Jr. of Eden; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by one daughter, Charlotte Brown O’Bryant and three sisters, Elva Foster; Reva Tate and Margaret Thompson.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Happy Home Congregational Christian Church. The burial will be at Evergreen Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday, at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville, and at other times at the residence of Ann O’Mara, 2520 Sunnycrest Drive, also in Reidsville.

Jewell Cassady

PELHAM, N.C. — Jewell Moore Cassady, 75, of 1236 Holland Road died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at her residence.
Born July 10, 1925, in Pelham, she was the daughter of Dolphus Moore and Mary Durham Moore.
She was married icon on Aug. 10, 1948, to Cebern Colon Cassady, who predeceased her in 1987.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pelham United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Rhonda Phelps of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sons, Cebern Elree Cassady and Colon R. Cassady, both of Pelham; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Pelham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Fritts officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son, Cebern Elree Cassady, 3149 Old U.S. Highway 29.

Melvin Hughes

CASWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Melvin Junior Hughes, 68, of 4351 Yarborough Mill Road died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at the UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill.
Born May 17, 1932, he was the son of Eustace and Elvia Brandon Hughes.
He was married icon to Dorothy S. Hughes, who survives. He was a native of Caswell County and attended the Oak Level A.M.E. Church, Milton.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, John and Michael Hughes of the residence; two sisters, Lucy Garland of Semora and Nellie Howard of Faber, Va.; four brothers, John Henry Hughes of Semora, and Willie Marsha Hughes, Eugene Hughes, and Marteen Hughes, all of Danberry, Conn., and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Level A.M.E. Church with Pastor Daisy Long officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from noon-8 p.m. Monday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel, Semora.

Minnie Pickeral

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Minnie Hines Pickeral, 87, formerly of 411 Park Springs Lake Road died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the Brian Center, Yanceyville, where she had resided for 13 years.
Born Jan. 12, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Rora Hines and Rosa Higgs Hines.
She was married icon to John William Pickeral Sr., who predeceased her in June 1981.
She had spent most of her life in the Park Springs community where she was a homemaker and a member of Park Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Ladies Auxillary of the church.
She was also a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include two sons, Irving Pickeral of Danville, Va., and John Pickeral of the Park Springs community; one daughter, Kathleen Collins of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Ruth Hylton of Spencer, Va. and Dennie Easton of Danville, Va.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Peggy Terry; four brothers, Arner Hines, Harry Hines, Tommy Hines and Woodrow Hines, and three sisters, Audrey Scearce, Sally Haley and Alberta Hines.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark J. Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Irving Pickeral, 789 Arnett Blvd in Danville.

Charles Herbert York Jr.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Charles Herbert York, Jr., 65, of 4506 Lansbury Rd., died Wednesday, September 13, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Hospice Unit, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2000 at Hanes-Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel with burial to follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
Mr. York was born on May 22, 1935 to the late Jettie and Herbert York.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy York and his grandson, William Charles Witty, Jr.
Charlie was employed by Peoples Life Insurance Company for 35 years.
Mr. York is survived by his wife, Judy York of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Spencer Coble; son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Jan York; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Barney Yaskiewicz; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. James Granfortuna and staff and to Hospice of Greensboro.

Jane Armfield

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Mrs. Jane Harris Armfield, 510 Country Club Drive, died Wednesday morning at Cone Memorial Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband Britt Millis Armfield. Mrs. Armfield was a native of Reidsville and the daughter of Jane Montgomery Harris and William Coleman Harris.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church Chapel with extended seating in Redhead Hall.
Mrs. Armfield was a long time Deacon, Elder and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught two Sunday school classes for over 60 years and taught Bethany for over 50 years. She also taught Bible Circles, one of which she taught through this spring; she was former president of the Women of the Church and in addition to her other activities for many years she arranged the altar flowers at the church.
Mrs. Armfield was the first woman moderator of the North Carolina Synod of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. and was a trustee of the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va.
She attended Salem College and graduated from UNC Greensboro where she earned her masters degree. Boards on which Mrs. Armfield served included Salem College, Davidson College, Peace College, Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Greensboro Symphony, Greensboro Preservation Society, the Roanoke Island Historical Association and Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. She was former president of the following boards: Family Service Agency, UNC-G Excellence Foundation, Friends of the Library, Musical Arts Guild and The Weatherspoon Art Gallery.
Her civic activities included being a founding member of the Greensboro Symphony, founding member of the first president and honorary president of the Greensboro Opera Company, a member of the N.C. Society of The Colonial Dames of America, a member of the Rachel Caldwell Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution, the North Carolina Herb Society and a sustaining member of the Greensboro Junior League.
Mrs. Armfield received an honorary doctorate degree from UNC Greensboro. She was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine, the Community Arts Award from the Altrusa Club, The Barbara Cone Award by the Greensboro Symphony Guild, The Jane Armfield Award established by the Greensboro Opera Company, Greensboro Woman of the Year, the Alumna Service Award from Salem College and the Brotherhood Award from the Greensboro Chapter of the National Conference Conference of Christians and Jews.
She is survived by her sister Mrs. Lou Harris Tucker of Greensboro; brother-in-law L. Richardson Preyer; sisters-in-law Betsy Armfield Smith, Dee Armfield Cannon and Adair Armfield. Nieces and nephews include William Coleman Harris III, Warren B. Buford Jr., Jane Tucker Pullen, Victoria Tucker Borden, Charles Willis Gold, J. Howard Gold, David M. Gold, L. Richardson Preyer Jr., Mary Norris Preyer Oglesby, Britt Armfield Preyer, Jane B. Preyer, Emily Preyer Fountain, Dee Armfield Pell, Thomas Lynwood Smith, Jr., Ellison Armfield, Millis Armfield, W.A. Armfield Jr., Robert Follin Armfield, Sallie Armfield McMillion, William J. Armfield IV and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends at her home on Thursday, and memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity in lieu of flowers.

R. Howard Copeland

WARRENTON, N.C. — Howard Copeland, 76, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000.
He was married icon to Juanita Copeland, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Ida Jackson of Danville, Va. and Caralene Headman of Warrenton; three sons, Ransom Copeland and Matthew Copeland, both of Maron, and Samuel Copeland of Hollister; two brothers, Otis Copeland of Warrenton and Johnnie Copeland of Hollister; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Richardson officiating. Interment will follow at Tillman-Lynch Cemetery.
Wake services will be held from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Richardson Funeral Home, Louisburg.
