James Earp Jr.

MILTON, N.C. — James Penn Earp Jr., 39, of 557 Sunset Drive died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham.
Born in Danville, Va., he was a son of James Penn “J.P.” Earp, who survives and Shelby Jean Zimmerman Earp.
He was a former employee of Collins and Aikman Corporation. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Alton, Va.
In addition to his father, survivors include one sister, Donna J. Earp of the residence and one brother, Jeffrey H. Earp of Semora.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery, Alton, Va., with the Rev. Stephen Vineyard officiating.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 1133 Foster Road, Alton, VA, 24520.
Brooks and White Funeral Home, Roxboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles D. Worthy Sr.

CLEMSON, N.C. — Charles Donald Worthy Sr., of 150 Downs Blvd. died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Highlands Cashiers Hospital, Highlands.
Born in Fyffe, Ala., he was a son of William Cleveland and Ida Keturah Upton Worthy.
He was married icon to Edythe Carnes Worhty, who predeceased him. He was a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, a veteran of World War II, Korea, and a graduate of Auburn University.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Donald Worthy Jr. of Seneca and James Cleveland Worthy of Florence, Ala.; one daughter, Keturah Anne Paulk of Highlands; one brother, Lionel D. Worthy of Gainesville, Fla.; one sister, Emma Jo Laminack of Muscadine, Ala. and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Old Stone Church Cemetery.
The family will receice friends from 2-2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Edward Lewis Tulloh Jr.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Edward Lewis Tulloh Jr. 73, of 1802 Hatchett Road, Yanceyville, N.C. died Sunday December 3, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.
Mr. Tulloh was born July 8, 1927 in South Boston, Virginia, the son of Edward Lewis Tulloh and Lillian Carter Tulloh.
He retired from Pilot Life Insurance Company, after 27 years of service, served in the United States Navy, was a member and Elder of Yanceyville Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Daniel Tulloh of the home, they had celebrated their 50th “Golden” anniversary on November 23, 2000.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two daughters, Nancy Ellen Courville of Sutton, Mass. and Carolyn Elizabeth Kuchel of Fairfax, Va.; one son, Daniel Tulloh of Fredricksburg, Va.; one sister, Mary Allen Williams of Amellia, Va. and nine grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, at Yanceyville Presbyterian Church, by Rev. Marie Reid. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C. At other times the family will be at the residence on Hatchett Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: Animal Protection Society of Northern Piedmont, P.O. Box 193, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379 or American Association of Cancer Research, Public Ledger Building, Suite 826, 150 South Independence Mall West, Philadelphia, Pa. 19106.

Mary Harrelson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Mary Woodson Harrelson, 74, of 7790 Park Springs Road died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Matthew H. and Meter Yeatts Woodson.
She was married icon to Malcolm Harrelson, who predeceased her Aug. 22, 1999. She attended Caswell County Schools, was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Shelia Shomali of Pelham and Ruby Sizemore of Ruffin; six sons, Thomas Marshall of Henderson, David Marshall and Richard Marshall, both of Chatham, Va., Cliff Marshall of Providence, George Marshall of Ringgold, Va. and Dennis Marshall of Ruffin; one sister, Carrie Henderson of Providence; two brothers, John Woodson and Paul Woodson of Ruffin; two stepdaughters, Betty Jean Reagan of Ruffin and LaRue Giles of Danville, Va.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Harrelson Funeral Home Chapel, Yanceyville, with the Rev. Hubert Inman officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Harrelson Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Ruby Sizemore, 7832 Park Springs Road.

Michael Wayne Bray

RUFFIN, N.C. — Maichael Wayne Bray, 31, of 165 Leisure Land Dr. died Thursday afternoon at Morehead Memorial Hospital, Eden, N.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
He was born in Danville, Va. and was of the Baptist faith. He was previously employed by Isometrics.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Lee Bray of Stuart, Va. and Mitchell Wayne Bray of the home; mother & father, Mary Jane and Kenneth Mitchell of Reidsville; one brother, Gregory Antiona Bray of Reidsville; grandmother, Vergie Bray of PElham; faithful companion, Glenda Nomi Overby of the home; nephew, Gregory "G.G." Bray, Jr. of Bassett, Va. and numerous aunts & uncles.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Irvin Fagg Bray.
A visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell, 247 Mitchell Rd., Reidsville, N.C.

Ruby Belle Apple Graves

RUFFIN, N.C. — Mrs. Ruby Belle Apple Graves of 8061 Park Springs Road died Tuesday evening, December 12, 2000 at Vencor Hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Caswell County. Mrs. Graves was a faithful member of Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, serving as President of the Usher Board for 33 years, member of the Missionary Society and the Pastor's Aid. She was a longtime companion and friend of the Fred B. Leggett, Sr. Family. Survivors are: a loving daughter, Mrs. Virginia "Ginnie" Williams and spouse, Thomas of Ruffin; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Evelyn Crawford and spouse, Clarence of High Point, Ms. Anita Graves of Reidsville; devoted son, Willie Roberts Apple and spouse Hazel of Ruffin; four grandchildren, Brandon Williams, Reginald Apple and spouse Monike, Travis England and Jermaine Farrish; one great-grandchild, Zelotis England; one sister, Mrs. Claudia M. McNeill of Alexandria, Virginia; special friends, Ms. Mary L. Graves of Providence, Ms. Tasha Jackson of Ruffin, Alton Smith of Bonnettsville, South Carolina; other relatives and many treasured friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday from Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Pelham with Rev. Gregory L. Hopkins presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 6:00 until 6:30 p.m. at the Johnson & Sons, 115 Holerby Street, Reidsville, N.C.

Daniel Hairston

RUFFIN, N.C. — Daniel Hairston, 80, of 958 Perkinson Road died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Annie Penn Hospital, Reidsville.
Born March 20, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Hartwell Hairston and Tisha Adams Hairston.
He was married icon to Betty Lou Hairston, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Annie Williams of Greensboro and Mattie Lambreth of Forestville, Md.; two sons, Arthur Hairston of Ruffin and Daniel Hairston of Newport News, Va.; two sisters, Lois Hairston of Detroit and Mary Peatross of Danville, Va. and one brother, Wesley Hairston of Reidsville.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder Ronel Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Edward "Ed" Mayberry

PELHAM, N.C. — Charles Edward "Ed" Mayberry, age 75, of 2560 Law Road, Pelham, North Carolina, died at his residence Thursday morning December 14, 2000 after a decline in health for a number of years.
Mr. Mayberry was born in Amherst County May 21, 1925 a son of the late John Leslie Mayberry and Margaret Bell Tyree Mayberry.
He was married icon to Gladys Campbell Mayberry on March 30, 1945 who survives. Mr. Mayberry was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He lived in Madison Heights until 1962 and then moved to Danville, and had made his home in Pelham, North Carolina since 1973. He was the owner and operator and president of Westover Cartage, Inc., Trucking Company until his retirement in 1994 due to health. He was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church where he was the former chairman of the Deacons and Sunday School teacher. He was also an ordained minister in the Disciples of Christ.
Survivors include in addition to his wife of the residence two daughters: Vicky Gammon Burnett and son-in-law, Phillip of Danville and Debra Mayberry Shackelford and son-in-law, Tim Shackelford of Pelham, North Carolina, and two sons: Jerry Mayberry and daughter-in-law Mary Mayberry and Jeff Mayberry and daughter-in-law D'Atte Mayberry all of Danville, and seven grandsons: Timothy Scott Shackelford and his wife Dana Shackelford and Jerry Mayberry, Jr., and his wife Crystal Mayberry, and Mike Mayberry, Joshua Gammon and Jason Gammon, and Jonathan Mayberry all of Danville, and Brian Shackelford of Wilmington, North Carolina, and one great-granddaughter: Sydney Rae Shackelford of Danville, and brother-in-law: James Ray Campbell of the residence.
He was the last member of his generation of the family and was predeceased by a son, Lonnie Mayberry, and also predeceased by ten brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at Stokesland Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Pittman, Rev. J.C. Raper, and Rev. John Warner. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Dan River Post No. 1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Friday evening from 7:00-9:00 P.M., and other times at the residence.

Carlton Ashley

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Carlton William Ashley, 72, of 2134 Scales St. died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
Born in Roxboro, he was a son of Dorsey Warren and Emma Brown Ashley.
He was married icon to Ruth Hudgins Ashley, who survives. He lived in Reidsville most of his life and was a retired driver's education and distribution education teacher in the Reidsville school system and was also the former director of driver's education for Caswell County. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a Deacon, former Sunday school teacher and member of the Norwood Robinson Sunday school Class. He was a graduate of Elon College, a World War II Navy veteran, a member of the Men's Garden Club, former member of the Reidsville Lions Club, and also delivered Meals on Wheels for Rockingham County Council on Aging.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Michael D. Ashley of Danville, Va. and Stacy Reid Ashley of Reidsville; one daughter, Vicky A. Thompson of Snow Camp, N.C.; three brothers, Wiley Ashley of Brimfield, Mass. and D.W. Ashley and Melvin Ashley, both of Roxboro; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Interment with graveside military rites will follow at a local cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Citty Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Nancy Burleson-Chavis

DURHAM, N.C. — Nancy McFarlane Burleson-Chavis, 59, E. Old Marion Hwy, died Saturday afternoon, December 16, 2000, in the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Burleson-Chavis was born in Wytheville, VA a daughter of the late John Henry and Mattie Gray McFarlane. She was a graduate in the Masters Program at the Medical University of South Carolina and had practiced nursing at the Memorial Hospital in Danville, VA and at Florence General Hospital in Florence, SC. She was a member of the S.C. State Board of Nursing Advisory Committee and the S.C. Nurses Association. She was a Certified Family Nurse Practioner and was employed with the Nursing Faculty as Clinical Nurse Practioner and Department Head for the Practical Nursing Program at Florence Darlington Technical College.
She was preceded in death by a son, Emmitt Burleson III and by a sister, Barbara McFarlane Hammock.
Surviving are her husband Legrand Chavis of Florence, SC; 4 children, Ashley Burleson, Shannon Burleson Carter, Michael Burleson and Patricia Carter McLeod all of Florence, SC; 2 sisters, Viola McFarlane Burchett of Danville, VA and Shirley MCFarlane Patino of Florence, SC; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Ketchum, Haley Carter, Trevor Carter and Brittany Burleson all of Florence, SC.
Memorials may be made to the Florence Darlington Technical College Education Foundation, Nancy Burleson-Chavis Nursing Scholarship Fund, Attn: Helen Frederick, P.O. Box 100548, Florence, S.C. 29501.
The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Patricia C. McLeod, 513 E. Cricklewood Drive, Florence, SC.

Virginia Jones

PELHAM, N.C. — Virginia Maude Fuller Jones, 84, of 140 Fuller Dr. died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Danville Regional MEdical Center.
She was born in Pittsylvania County.
She was married icon to Claude M. Jones, who predeceased her in 1972. She was employed with Dan River Mills and retired after 32 years. She was a member of Hickory Grove Methodist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Fred F. Fuller of Pelham.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fair Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Danview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Tommy Fuller, 132 Fuller Dr., Pelham.
Fair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
