Evelyn Oates
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Evelyn Hamrick Oates, 97, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Fitzgerald Health Care Center, Arbor Acres.
Born Oct. 31, 1903, in Ruth, she was a daughter of Charles and Minnie Hamrick.
She was married
to James G. Oates Sr., who predeceased her in 1963. She lived in Greensboro most of her life and attended Women’s College (UNCG) and retired from the Greensboro City School System. She was a cafeteria manager at Lindley Jr. and Kiser Jr. High Schools. She attended First Baptist Church for 65 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Bowden of Greensboro; one son, James G. Oates Jr. of Bermuda Run; two stepdaughters, Amanda Black and Kelly Cozart; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.
A funeral will be held 12 p.m Monday at the Chapel of First Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Bowden Jr. and the Rev. David Bowden officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Virginia Watlington
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Virginia White Watlington, 88, of the Prospect Community, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born July 22, 1912, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of James Franklin White and Mary Worsham White.
She was married
to J. Malcolm Watlington, who predeceased her. She worked for the Caswell County School System before her retirement and was a homemaker. She was an active member of Prospect United Methodist Church for many years.
Survivors include three sons, John M. Watlington and James W. Watlington, both of Yanceyville, Reid Watlington of Poquoson, Va.; one sister, Dorothy W. Lyday of Yanceyville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by three brothers, John White, Herbert White and James White.
The private graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Ruth officiating.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Alzheimer's Association of the Piedmont-Triad, 200 North Cherry Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101.

William Southard
PELHAM, N.C. - William Paul Southard, 82, of 178 Bowes Street, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Guilford County, he was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. He worked for Dan River Mills until his retirement.
He was married
to Mary Jane Southard, who survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include children, Paul Wayne Southard of Pelham, Ethel Mitchell of Reidsville, Lary Southard, Roger Southard, Barry Southard, all of Pelham; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one sister, Lela Shelton of Hickory.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lively Stones Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with military rites performed by the Rockingham County Honor Guard.
The family will be receiving friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Mary Farthing
EDEN, N.C. — Mary Allen Turner Farthing, 93, of Bayberry Retirement Inn died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Moorehead Memorial Hospital, Eden, after several months of declining health and a five day-stay at the hospital.
Born Dec. 23, 1907, in Lynchburg, Va., she was a daughter of William J. Turner and Lennie Turner.
On June 14, 1927, she was married
to Oscar Vernon Farthing, who predeceased her, Jan. 11, 1983.
She lived most of her life in Blairs, Va. She was retired from Tate Manufacturing Company, where she worked as floor manager over the sewing division. She was a member of Bannister Springs Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Effie T. Bruce of Tampa, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with the Elder Melvin Shelton, the Elder Troy Simpson and the Elder H.P. Somers officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Ruth McGee, 9665 U.S. Hwy. 29., Blairs, Va.
John Pinchback
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — John Allen Pinchback, 67, of 218 Melvin Wrenn Road died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 25, 1933, in Blanche, N.C., he was a son of John Wilson Pinchback and Catherine Willis Pinchback.
He was married
to Gloria Thompson Pinchback, who survives.
He was a retired barber in the Danville area.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Yvonne Pinchback of Knightdale, N.C.; four sons, Derrick Pinchback of Yanceyville, N.C., Dennis Pinchback of Charlotte, N.C., Donald Pinchback of Garner, N.C. and Douglas Pinchback of Greensboro, N.C. and two sisters, Sherdina Gwynn of Reidsville, N.C. and Nettie Johnson of Providence, N.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at River Zion Baptist Church, Blanche, N.C., with the Rev. S. Tyrone Thornton officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Dollie Klingman
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Dollie Hicks Klingman, 69, of 169 Barco St., died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born April 15, 1931, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of David T. and Oneda Bowes Hicks.
She was a housewife and a member of Union United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Kathleen H. Webster and Doris H. Nance of Yanceyville, and Nellie H. Whitt of Texas.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gregory Minnieck officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Harrelson Funeral Home and other times at the home of a sister, Doris Nance, 179 Barco St.
Lynn Brown
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —- Mrs. Lynn Holt Brown, age 41 of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born December 21, 1959 in Pittsylvania County to Wallace Warren and Lee Kahle Holt. Mrs. Brown was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Brown and three children, Chelsea, Emily and Kahle Brown all of the home; parents, Wallace and Lee Holt of Danville, VA; one sister, Vickie Grimes and husband Larry of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, Michael Holt and wife Karen of Danville, VA and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 5, 2001 at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Reynolda Presbyterian Church by Rev. Alan Wright. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Reynolda Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 2200 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106. John Neighbors
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — John William Neighbors, 85, of 1040 Purley Church Rd., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital, Reidsville.
Born Sept. 4, 1915, in Caswell County, he was a son of Charlie Pink and Daisy Dean Rudd Neighbors.
He was a farmer, carpenter and brick mason and served in the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three nieces, Ruby Birchett of Snow Camp, Ada Benton of Danville, Va. and Kay Neighbors of Yanceyville, and one nephew, Raymond Neighbors of Yanceyville.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Community Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Keith Bowling and Bishop Vernon Massengill officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jettie A. Steele
SANDY RIDGE, N.C. — Jettie Bernice Ayers Steele, 96, formerly of Delta Church Rd., died Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at the Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville, Va.
A graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2001 at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Sandy Ridge with Reverend Randy Roberts and Reverend Melvin Shelton officiating.
Mrs. Steele was a lifelong resident of Stokes County, was the oldest living member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Jake Steele.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Steele of Danville, Va.; stepnieces, Edith Carter and Inez Jones, both of Madison, and Margaret Yorke of Winston-Salem; and a stepnephew, J.B. Jones of Madison.
The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2001 prior to the graveside service. Her body will lie in state at Ray Funeral Home in Madison until 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

John Rice
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — John David Rice, 83, of 2678 Park Springs Road, died Sunday, January 7, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Rice was born March 21, 1917, in Caswell County, North Carolina, the son of Marion Rice and Mollie Brown Rice.
He was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie Harris Jones Rice of the home.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Brenda Rice Thompson of Reidsville and Jo Ann Rice of Greensboro; two sons, David Rice and James Allen Rice, both of Providence; one stepson, James Jones of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Marie Taylor of Pelham and Myrtle Myers of Providence; one brother, Horice Rice of Pelham; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Singley and the Rev. John Meadors officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C.
