Iona Johnson
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Iona Woodall Johnson, 83, of 10169 N.C. Hwy 86 North died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.
Born March 15, 1917, in Cascade, Va., she was the daughter of James Edward Woodall and Esther Stratton Woodall.
She was married
to Robert Johnson, who survives. For 25 years, she was an active member of Providence Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was an active member of the Women’s Missionary Union for 15 years.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, J. Norman Splawn of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Aloma S. Hawkins of Alton, Va. and Darlene S. Holmes of Saltville, Va.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Marcia Black Ross
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mrs. Marcia Black Ross, of Charlotte, NC, died Sunday, January 21, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.
Mrs. Ross was born September 22, 1926 in Thomasville, NC, a daughter of the late Arthur E. Ross and Gladys Browning Ross.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Gladys Black Macklin, of Carlsbad, CA. Mrs. Ross graduated in 1948 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce. She was employed as an accountant by Chadborn Hosiery and as a teacher by Burton Institute and also taught at King’s Business College and later at Mecklenburg County Schools including as a teacher of distributive education at East Mecklenburg High School.
She completed her career as office manager at R.G. Ross and Company and later at J.P. Ross and Company. She was a longtime Board member, Officer and an active worker with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Republican Women’s Club. She was a lover of the coast and the mountains and played tennis much of her life. Mrs. Ross was a member of Saint John’s Episcopal Church.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and is survived by her husband, John “Jack” P. Ross; two sons, John “Skip” P. Ross, Jr. and his wife, Celeste M. Ross and Rodney Black Ross, all of Charlotte and daughter, Bonnie R. Cooper and her husband, Jack M. Cooper, of Danville, VA; three grandchildren, Amy E., Jennifer A. and John P. Ross, III and brother, Arthur E. Black, Jr., of Greensboro, NC.
Funeral will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at Saint John’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Charles L. Holt officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7:00-8:30 p.m., Tuesday at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 or the charity of the donor’s choice. Annie Cantrell
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Annie Land Cantrell, 83, of 3603 Shady Grove Road died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Hospice House in Burlington.
Born Dec. 5, 1017, in Eden, she was the daughter of William A. Land and Rena Frances Booth Land.
She was married
to James Trainer Cantrell, who predeceased her in 1994. She spent most of her life in the Shady Grove Road community of Caswell County. She worked for Dan River Inc. and was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Cantrell of the residence; two sisters, Lillie Motley of Providence and Ollie Evans of Yanceyville and one brother, James W. Land of Pelham.
She was predeceased by one brother, Joe Land.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at True Gospel Baptist Church with the Rev. Hubert Inman and the Rev. Bobby Helms officiating. Interment will follow at Pelham United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Hazel Delp
LEASBURG, N.C. — Hazel Webb Delp, 91, of 5589 Hwy. 158 East died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Alamance Hospice Home, Burlington.
Born July 4, 1909, in Carroll County, she was a daughter of Victor Cabel Webb and Lizzie Worrell Webb.
She was married
to Luther C. Delp, who predeceased her in 1962. She was a homemaker and member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Versie Webb Barts of Leasburg; one stepdaughter, Irene Livers of Lakeland, Fla., and five stepgrandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Sittie Webb Horton.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. James Whitehead officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the church, Hwy. 158 East, Yanceyville.

Sarah McGhee
SEMORA, N.C. — Sarah Jane McGhee, 73, of 139555 N.C. Hwy 119 North died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Person County Memorial Hospital.
Born March 22, 1926, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Clarence and Julia Johnson.
She attended Caswell public schools and was a faithful member of Macedonia A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include seven daughters, Mary Swann of Greensboro, Lois Stewart, Anette Jones, Gloria McGhee and Stella Hughes, all of Semora, Laura Graves of Burlington and Cynthia McGhee of the residence; one son, Theodore McGhee Jr. of Semora; two sisters, Mae Suw Winstead of Semora and Lottie Washington of New York; three brothers, Clarence Johnson of Semora, John Allen Johnson of Yanceyville and Richard Johnson of New York; one foster sister, Dorothy McCain of Semora; two foster brothers, Larry Elliot of Semora and Charlie Elliot of Charlotte; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Clyde Long officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 12-5 p.m. Wednesday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel and then a wake will be held from 7-8 p.m. at Macedonia A.M.E. Church.

Jeffrey Gunn
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Jeffrey Leonard Gunn, 37, of 501A Greenbriar Road, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Born March 15, 1963 in Danville, he was a son of Bobby Lee Gunn and Mae Irby Gunn, both of whom survive.
He was married
to Anita Gregory Gunn and was employed at Time Warner Cable in Greensboro.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
In addition to his parents of Danville, and his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Ashley Nicole Graham and Ebony Gunn, both of Danville, and one brother, Darryl Lee Gunn of Fort Washington, Md.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Mine Creek Baptist Church with Elder Keith Schuler officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Burial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at his parents residence, 5272 Old Richmond Road, Danville.

John Southern
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — John Winslow Southern, 50, formerly of 396 Dillard School Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at The Brian Center Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Born Jan. 29, 1950, in Caswell County, he was the son of James R. Southern and Leonia Hunt Southern.
He was a member of Refregee Holiness Church and was a tobacco farmer.
Survivors include three sisters, Onnie Mae Southern, Deanne Southern and Betty Southern, all of Yanceyvillle; two brothers, Henry Southern of Roxboro and James Robert Southern Jr. of Yanceyville; two half sisters, Rita Farrish and Ithea Farrish both of Yanceyville; two half brothers, Quincy Farrish and Andy Farrish both of Yanceyville; stepmother, Dorriane Southern of Danville and two stepsisters, Joyce M. Robinson and Shere D. Robinson, both of Danville.
She was predeceased by a sister, Jackie Southern.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Hamer Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Bernice Vincent officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home and other times at the residence of a sister, Onnie Mae Southern, 341 West Church St.

Carrie Royster
SEMORA, N.C. — Carrie Royster, 70, died Friday at the Person County Memorial Hospital, Roxboro, N.C.
She was born June 30, 1930, to Willie Royster and Julia Richmond Royster.
She was a native of Caswell County and attended the public Schools of Caswell County.
Survivors include one daughter, Roselyn Royster Hatchett; five sisters, Alease Phelps and Dorothy Cunningham of Semora N.C., Annie Ruth Brandon of Alton, Va, Louise Elmore of Leasburg, N.C. and JoAnn Chadwick of Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, Robert Linwood Royster of the residence.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, at the the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Semora N.C. with the Rev. Preston Medley officiating. Interment will be held in the church cemetary.
A viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. and family hour 6 to 7 p.m.

Sarah McCain
MILTON, N.C. — Sarah Farmer McCain, 94, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Person County Memorial Hospital.
Born March 6, 1906, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of George and Nicey Farmer.
She attended Caswell County public schools and was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Semora.
Survivors include four sisters, Betty Farmer, Mary Farmer and Lillian Brandon, all of Chester, Pa., and Katie Bradsher of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, John “Jake” Farmer of Semora; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one step grandchild and one step great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Semora, with the Rev. Harold Wenstley officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 12-8 p.m. Tuesday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel, Semora.
