Minnie Carroll Powell
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Mrs. Minnie Carroll Powell, 91, of 5817 Walters Mill Road, Providence, N.C., died Sunday, January 28, 2001 at The Brian Center, Yanceyville, N.C., following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Powell was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, January 6, 1910, the daughter of Martha Ann Carroll and Ruben Henderson Carroll.
Mrs. Powell was retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., member of Providence Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Mrs. Powell was predeceased by five sisters, Theola Lovell, Bertha Travis, Nettie Poteat, Luetta Aldridge and Vergie Wood; four brothers, Edgar Carroll, William Henry Carroll, Swanson Carroll and Raymond Carroll, a grandson, Ted Powell, daughter-in-law, Jane Powell.
Survivors include her husband, W.L. (Bill) Powell of the home, two sons, William Lee Powell, Providence, N.C., and J.C. Powell of Providence, N.C., two sisters, Omie C. Poteat of Danville, VA, and Bernice G. Goodson of Danville, VA.; 1 brother, Mac Alvin Carrol of Providence, N.C.; Four grandchildren, Bruce Powell, Lou Ann Reaves, Scott Powell, and Kenneth Powell. 1 Step-grandchild, Drew Dillion. Five great grandchildren, Elizabeth Reaves, B.J. Powell, Jason Reaves, Alex Powell and Kenneth Powell, Jr.; daughter-inlaws, Wendy A. Powell and Shirley M. Powell.
Funeral service will be held, Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Providence Baptist Curch by the Rev. Kenneth Clarke and Rev. Claude Harrelson. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends and family at Providence Baptist Church from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Tuesday. At other times the family will be at the home, 5817 Walters Mill Road.

Una Gilliam
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Una Lee Garrison Gilliam, 83, of 582 Walters Mill Road, Providence, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 after several years of declining health.
Born May 15, 1917, she was the daughter of John W. Garrison and Esther Kernodle Garrison.
She was married
to James Woodrow Gilliam, who predeceased her Aug. 27, 1996.
She was a member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir, the United Methodist Women, and the Caswell County Home Demonstration Club.
She had lived in the Gatweood community of Caswell County since 1954 and was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, Donald Woodrow Gilliam of Union Town, Ohio, James Ronald Gilliam of Providence, Larry Wayne Gilliam and Neal Glenn Gilliam, both of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Ernest Garrison and Roy Garrison, both of Burlington.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Richard Mathews and the Rev. George Jones officiating. An interment will follow at Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence of her son, James Ronald Gilliam, 533 Shady Grove Rd., Providence.

Iva Holland
DURHAM, N.C. — Iva Trent Holland, 53, of 200 County Road, Chatham, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 7, 1947 in Danville, she was the daughter of George W. Trent and Maude Reynolds Trent.
She was married
to Frank W. Holland, who survives. She lived in Danville for many years before moving to Warsaw in 1976. She worked for Dan River, Inc. for 11 years before working for News America Marketing. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include, in addition to her husband, three brothers, Alexandria Trent and Larry Trent, both of Liberty, and Jessie Ford Trent of Danville and one sister, Lillie Ellis of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Newton officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Jessie Trent, 1397 Mill Creek Rd, Danville.

Ernest Elliot
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Ernest Clifton Elliot, 75, of 923 Halifax Road, Danville, Va., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Brian Center, Yanceyville after 10 years of declining health.
Born Feb. 19, 1925 in South Boston, Va., he was the son of Ernest Wayne Elliot and Carrie Mae Conner Elliot.
He was married
to Jean Allen Elliot, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville and worked for Barkhouser Motors until his retirement.
He was also a United States Army veteran.
Survivors include, in addition to his wife, two sons, Jimmy Wayne Elliot of South Boston, Va., and E.C. Elliot, Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Lana C. Elliot of Danville; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 12 p.m. Saturday at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Newton officiating. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery, South Boston, Va.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times at 11 Halifax Road, Danville.

Pattie Collins
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Pattie Bradner Collins, 89, of 405 Forsythe Street, Fayetteville, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Weeks-Welsh of Cary; three sons, Preston H. Collins and Frank W. Collins, both of Hope Mills, James R. Collins of Omaha, Neb.; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Boothe and Mrs. Weldon Payne, both of Danville, Va., Mary Brown of Charlotte; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David Crocker officiating.
The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Sunday at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Hospice of Cumberland County.

Thomas Lester
DURHAM, N.C. — Thomas Jeff Lester, 70, of 1380 Twin Oak Lane, Danville, Va., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.
Born Jan. 23, 1931, he was the son of James Lester and Dora Belle Price Lester.
He was married
to Annie Jones Lester, who survives.
Survivors include, in addition to his wife, four daughters, Sharon Lester of Hyattsville, Md., Dora Lester-El of Richmond, Va., Dianne Lester of Washington, D.C., Cynthia Lester of Greenbelt, Md.; two sons, Edward Thomas Lester of Hyattsville, Md., Darryl Keith Lester of Ft. Hood, Texas; one sister, Hannah Lester of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Roy Neal Lester of Danville, Va., Nathaniel Lester of South Ozone Park, N.Y., and Melvin Lester of Boston, Mass.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Pelham, with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hill Memory Garden cemetery.

Gladys Crane
DURHAM, N.C. — Gladys Crane Crane, 75, of 5213 Highway 29 North, Blairs, Va., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Duke Medical Center, Durham, after five months of declining health.
Born May 16, 1925 in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Fred H. Crane and Ruby Tate Crane, who predeceased her.
She was married
June 3, 1944 to Alvin E. Crane of the home, who survives. Mrs. Crane had lived her entire life in the Blairs community and was bookkeeper for Crane's TV Sales and Service. She was a member of the Blairs Baptist Church, where she was active with the nursery.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin E. Crane of the home; a son, Alvin Elgin Crane, Jr. and wife Glenda of Wytheville; two daughters, Diana C. Austin and husband Ronnie of Blairs, Ruby C. Bass and husband Michael of Ridgeway; three grandchildren, Steve Austin, Andrea Williams and David Bass and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by a granddaughter, Lisa Austin Wright.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Reed and the Rev. Freddy J. Vicks officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.

Essie Watson
REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Essie Barber Watson, 81, of 706 Thomas Street, Reidsville, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of William David Barber and Martha Amanda Doss Barber.
She was married
to L.J. Watson, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Wray of Pelham, Mary Beggarly of Providence; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by two sisters, Lena Barber and Maggie Adkins and two brothers, Lovelace Barber and Guy Barber.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Reidsville. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Mable Coleman
RALEIGH, N.C. — Mable Davis Coleman, 82, of Independence Village, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001 at Rex Hospital after a brief illness.
Born September 5, 1918 in Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of Leroyar M. Davis and Mary Waller Davis, who predeceased her.
She was married
July 27, 1940 to Alonza T. Coleman, who died Dec. 23, 1996. Mrs. Coleman had lived her life in Danville and Richmond, Va. For the past four years, she resided at Independence Village, Raleigh, N.C., and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.
Mrs. Coleman was the last surviving member of her generation.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Arline Garrett, Madeline McDowell, Katie Yeatts; two brothers, Asa Davis and James Davis.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Sparky Pritchard of Richmond, Va., officiating. Interment will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral home 12:30-1:30 Wednesday prior to the funeral.
