Jessie Robertson

PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Jessie William Robertson, 64, of 4425 Shady Grove Road, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Jefferson Health Care.
Born May 1, 1935, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Harry T. Robertson and Lillie Robertson Orander.
He was retired from Cone Mills Inc. and was of the baptist faith.
Survivors in addition to his mother include, 3 daughters, Debra Gruthy of Newport News, Va., Delores Rickman of Reidsville, N.C., Kathy Hodges of Ruffin, N.C.; one son, Jessie W. Robertson Jr. of Ruffin N.C.; three sisters, Myrtle Saunders, of Danville, Va., Robette Evans of Pelham, N.C., Betty Lou Tolor of Gastonia, N.C.; three brothers, Billy Robertson, Donald Robertson, Frank Robertson all of Danville, Va.; six grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Reaves officiating.
The family will receive family and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C., and at other times the family will be at the home, 4425 Shady Grove Road.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Kay Satterfield, 7375 Parks Spring Road Pelham, N.C. 27311

Joseph Stephens

DURHAM, N.C. — Joseph "Man" Stephens, 79, of Hillsboro, N.C., died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at Durham Regional Hospital.
Born March 5, 1921 in Danville, Va., he was the son of Joe Stephens and Bertha Yancey Stephens.
He worked for Gentry's Market as a maintenance technician and was a member of Bibleway Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Fannie S. Nunnally of Pelham and Mary Stephens of New York City, N.Y.
The funeral will be held Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel with Apostle L.G. Campbell officiating. Viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of of Eunice Russell, 122 Spruce Street.
Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

William Thomas

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — William Percy Thomas, 53, of 3096 Jack Pointer Road, Semora, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Born Feb. 15, 1947, he was the son of John Thomas and Eliza Thomas.
He was married icon to Esther Thomas, who survives. He was a native of Caswell County and was the pastor of Sunny Level Baptist Church in Ringgold, Va.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and mother, include one daughter, Ja'Vera Thomas of the home; one son, Chris Thomas of Danville, Va.; two brothers, John Thomas and Earlie Thomas and one sister, Annette Elliot.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Caswell County Civic Center, Yanceyville with Dr. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Interment will follow at the Greater Brandon Chapel Baptist Church in Alton, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Plenty Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Christopher Francisco

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. — Christopher Noel Francisco, 21, of 1613 Rivermont Heights, Martinsville, Va., died Feb. 10, 2001 in Waynesville.
Born July 18, 1979, he was the son of Noel Jefferson Francisco and Lucy Kidd Luongo, who survive.
He was employed by H&W Racing and was a member of North Shore Congregational Church in Fox Point, Wis. He was also a member of the Collinsville Rescue Squad, Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, and the Fox Point Volunteer Fire Department. He was a graduate of Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wis., where he was on the Diving Team.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, step-grandparents, Walter and Nancy Harris of Collinsville, Joseph and Margaret Luongo of Chardon, Ohio; step-mother, Carolyn H. Francisco of Martinsville; step-father, Jeff Luongo of Fox Point, Wis.; one uncle, Barry Kidd; four nieces, Naomi, Alicia, Kacie, and Kelcie Hancock; girlfriend, Ashley Clark; six aunts; two step-brothers, Tito Shelton of Collinsville, James Michael Shelton of Martinsville; two sisters, Kelly Denise Hancock of Patrick Springs, Sarah Michelle Luongo of Fox Point, Wis. and maternal grandparents, James Otis and Ila Fern Kidd of Martinsville.
The funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Feb. 14, 2001 at Norris Chapel with the Rev. Karl Schimpf and the Rev. Don Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be sent to Collinsville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 760, Collinsville, VA 24078.

Ruby Sluder

GREENSBORO. N.C. — Ruby Adams Sluder, 70, of 1915 Boulevard St., died Feb. 13, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital.
She was married icon to Calvin Sluder and was a graduate of Schoolfield High School, class of 1950. She was a member of Sheldon Baptist Church in Pelham, N.C., and loved to crotchet and make afghans.
Survivors in addition to her husband include, one sister, Irene Redden of Rainelle, W.Va.; six stepdaughters and two stepsons.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul Stump, and two brothers.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, at Dan River Cemetery in Ruffin, N.C.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., Wednesday at Hanes-Linberry, 515 North Elm St.
Memorials may be made to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.

Mary Patterson

STONEVILLE, N.C. — Mary Louise Patterson, 67, of 3245 N.C. 135, died Feb. 14, 2001.
She was the daughter of William Gordy and Ruby Pearl Martin Shropshire.
She was married icon to Albert T. Patterson who preceded her in death. She was retired from DuPont and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Gail Carter of Danville, Va.; one son Ricky Patterson of Stoneville; three sisters Nancy S. Patterson, Shirley S. Wyrick, Betty S. Merritt, all of Stoneville; three brothers, Bill Shropshire, Jerry Shropshire, both of Stoneville, Jimmy Shropshire of Eden, N.C.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Ridge-View Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box, 281, Wentworth, N.C., 27375.

William Spencer III

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Mr. William Oliver Spencer, III, 74, of 701 Glen Echo Trail passed away at Forsyth Medical Center of February 13, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born in Winston Salem on April 8, 1926, the son of the late William Oliver Spencer, Jr. and Fay Huntley Spencer Ives. He attended the local public schools but graduated from High Point High School after his family moved to High Point. He completed one year at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, then entered the U. S. Army in May 1944 and served in the military operations in the Southwest Pacific Area and Japan. He joined General Douglas MacArthur's Headquarters in Manila and was in the Advanced Echelon that landed in Japan ten days before the surrender. He witnessed the signing of the Japanese Surrender in Tokoya Bay from a ship anchored beside the USS Missouri. MacArthur gave Mr. Spencer a field commission of Second Lieutenant and personally pinned on his Silver Bars. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service with the Advance Echelon in the Adjutant General's office in Japan. He was honorably discharged in November 1946. Mr. Spencer returned to Winston-Salem Laundry. After 19 years he opened his own business, a franchise of Calico Corners, selling decorative fabric. Three months after a fire in January 1987 the business reopened as Fingertips. Mr. Spencer retired in September 1988.
He is survived by his wife of 47 1/2 years, Mrs. Nell Penn Watt Spencer of the home; two children and their spouses, William Oliver Spencer, IV (Laura Spencer Lee) of Charlotte and Sallie Spencer Rice (Thomas B. III) of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren he loved very much, William Spencer, V, Mary Carter Lee Spencer, Catherine Penn Rice, and Virginia Neil Rice; a sister, Mary Jo Spencer Gibson (Raleigh J., III) of Walnut Cove; a half brother, David Gray Spencer of Richmond, Virginia; his stepmother, Caroline Gray Spencer of Winston-Salem; and beloved nieces and nephews.
Mr. Spencers life hobbies were family, gardening and classical music. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101. Visitation with the family was held at the home last evening. (Arrangements are by Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel.)

Margaret Cobb

Ruffin, N.C. — Margaret Carter Cobb, 84, of Route 1, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem following a brief illness.
Born May 29, 1916, in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of the late James Horace and Bessie Borum Carter.
She was married icon to Oscar Lee Cobb who predeceased her in death. She worked as a hairdresser in the Reidsville and Ruffin areas for many years.
Survivors include, one daughter, Margaret L. Cobb of Winston-Salem; two sisters Lucy Carter of Ruffin, N.C., Elizabeth C. Wilson of Hilton Head, S.C.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, Jack, and Robert Carter.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, at Ruffin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Danny Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Ruffin Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home, and at other times the family will be at home of Sara Carter, 9670 US 29 Business, Ruffin.

Bernice Oliver

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Bernice Dalton Haymes Oliver, 94, formerly of Milton, N.C., died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001 in the Brian Center, Yanceyville.
Born Jan 1, 1907 in Gretna, Va., she was the daughter of William Douglas Dalton and Lucy Goad Dalton.
She was married icon to Lester Haymes, who predeceased her, and later remarried to Walter Oliver, who also predeceased her. She moved to Milton at an early age and was a member of the Milton Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include Katherine Haymes McGee of Milton, one sister, Ethel Ramsey of Danville, Va., and three grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. David Wilson officiating.
The family will be at the residence of Katherine McGee, 17 Fairview Drive, Milton.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to Milton Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 17, Milton, NC 27305.
Townes Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Maurice Yancey

PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Maurice Yancey, 35, of 260 Christiana Road, Apt. QA, New Castle, Del., died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at his residence after a sudden illness.
Born July 23, 1965 in Caswell County, he was the son of Lena Yancey Rogers.
He was married icon to Sabrina Yancey and was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church where he was a former member of the Chancelor Choir. He graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville and earned a degree in Business Administration from Rutledge College. He joined the United States Army where he received an honorable discharge. He was employed by Vurris Foods, Inc. as a warehouse supervisor.
Survivors include, in addition to his mother and Sabrina Yancey, one son, Dominik Gabriell Yancey of Germany; four sisters, Tammy Yancey of Providence, Paula W. Badiabo and Danielle Rogers, both of Raleigh, Teresa Rogers of Houston, Texas and two brothers, Richard Rogers of Reidsville and Weldon Rogers of Providence.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Red Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Viewing will be held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will be at the residence of Lena Rogers, 695 Semester Road, Providence.
Fulton Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
