Rev. Mahlon Elliott
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Rev. Mahlon H. Elliott died in his home on March 3, 2001. He is survived by his wife Marlene; three children, Wanda, Scott and Cory; one brother, Roland and family, Billie, Jan, Julie and Judd; one sister, Louise and family, Brenda and Patti; one sister-in-law, Georgia and family, Susan and Rodney; and five grandchildren, Jenny, Erin, David, Logan and Jason. A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, March 23 at 2 p.m. at Highland Burial Cemetery on N. Main Street in Danville, Va. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 5540 Falmouth Street, Richmond, VA 23230.
Helen Patrick
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mrs. Helen L. Hicks Patrick, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at White Oak Manor Nursing Home.
Born in Danville, Va., the daughter of the late Ernest Graves Lewis and Annie Slayton Lewis, she attended Averett College in Danville. Helen was married
to Ramey William Hicks of Axton, Va., who preceded her in death in 1955. Widowed very young, Helen remarried after her two daughters were grown, this time to Lawless (Pat) Patrick, who preceded her in death in 1985. She was sustained by her great faith and wonderful sense of humor. Mrs. Patrick retired from the N.C. Air National Guard after 25 years of service.
An inspiration to all who knew her, she was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
A very special mother and grandmother, she is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Parker and her husband, Bill, of Charlotte and Nancy Hill and her husband, Ronald, of Wilmington, N.C.; two granddaughters, Katherine Young and her husband, Jamie, of Charlotte and Jennifer Leary and her husband, Tim, of Wilmington; and two great-granddaughters, Sloane Young of Charlotte and Sara Leary of Wilmington.
Mrs. Patrick's funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at Cornerstone Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Glenn O. Gunter and Reverend Richard Horney. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 this evening at the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 5301 Albermarle Road.

Joyce Southern
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Joyce McCaden Southern, 44, of Suburban Trailer Park, Highway 86 North, Yanceyville, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at the residence.
Born Oct. 21, 1956, she was the daughter of Tony McCaden, who survives and Annie Bell Brown McCaden.
She was married
to Bobby Southern, who survives. She was a member of Missionary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Burlington and father of Yanceyville, include two sons, Marlo Southern of Danville, Bobby A. Southern Jr. of Burlington; one daughter, Tarnisha Southern of Yanceyville; two sisters, Deloise Johnson and Gladys McCaden, both of Yanceyville and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Grier II officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and at other times at the residence.

Erica Johnson
PELHAM, N.C. — Erica Lynn Johnson, 9, of 2474 Highway 700, Pelham, N.C. died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in the Duke University Medical Center.
She was born in Danville, Va. on February 7, 1992. She was a third grade student of North Elementary School, Providence, N.C. and a member of the Church of God of the Prophecy on Baltimore Avenue.
She is survived by her father, Aaron Stanley Johnson of Pelham, N.C.; her care giver and great-grandmother, Lillie F. Johnson of the home; a great-uncle and great-aunt, Glen Stanley Johnson and Tondra Stone Johnson of Madison, N.C.; a great-uncle and great-aunt, Charles E. Turner and Betty J. Turner of Danville; cousins, Lance Lee Hatfield, Mingan Hatfield, Sierra Hatfield all of Providence; and Jay Arthur Hatfield serving in the U.S. Navy. She was pre-deceased by paternal grandmother, Levonda Ann Johnson and paternal great-grandfather, Arthur S. Johnson.
She is also survived by her birth mother, Terri Coleman Davis of Yanceyville, N.C.; two half-brothers, Nicholas Bean of Pelham, N.C. and Joseph Davis of Yanceyville, N.C.; former foster mother, Rachel Yoder of Blanch, N.C. and maternal grandparents, Monie Ledford of Laurel, Md. and Gerald Lee of Reidsville, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from the Church of God of the Prophecy on Baltimore Avenue by the Rev. Charles Turner, the Rev. Charles Hawkins and the Rev. Jack Robertson. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence, 2474 Highway 700, Pelham, N.C.
Charles Perkins
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Charles Henry Perkins, 78, of 1063 Walters Mill Road, died March 23, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 1, 1922, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Charlie Otis Perkins and Nannie Hayden Perkins.
He was married
to Elizabeth Bailey Perkins, who preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 1985. He was a member of Community Baptist Church. He was retired from Dan River Mills Inc. after 28 years. He was a veteran of World War II, he received his purple heart, and served under General Patton, 395th infantry, 99 division, American Theatre, European Campaign, African Middle Eastern Campaign.
Survivors include, three daughters, Ann P. Scruggs of Providence, Vickie P. Clayton of Roxboro, N.C., Paula P. Owen of Providence; three sisters, Barbara P. Deboe of Rocky Mount, N.C., Annabelle P. Myers, of Blanch, N.C., Nancey P. Widner of Ringgold, Va.; three brothers, Stanley Irvin Perkins, of Danville, Va., Otis Perkins of Graham, N.C., Frank L. Perkins, of Virginia Beach, Va.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Other than his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Carrie Huffsticker, and two brothers, Melvin L. Perkins and Billy R. Perkins.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Smith and Rev. Keith Bowling officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, with military honors by V.F.W. Post No. 7316.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Community Baptist Church, Old. Hwy. 86 North, and at other times the family will be at the residence.
The family request that donations be made to Community Baptist Youth Fund 3050 Old. Hwy. 86 North, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379.

Peggy Perry
SALISBURY, N.C. — Peggy Gaskey Perry, 58, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 16, 1942 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of Annie Bradshaw Gaskey and Lewis W. Gaskey, who survives.
She was married
to George Floyd Perry who predeceased her Aug. 4, 1999. She was educated in Rowan County schools and was a homemaker. She was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors, in addition to her father of Salisbury, include one daughter, Sherry Milam of Sutherlin, Va.; one brother, Robert Eugene Gaskey of Salisbury; one sister, Jeanette Harrison of Salisbury; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The entombment service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Salisbury with Dr. Marcus B. Hovis III officiating.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Dialysis Care of Rowan County, 1406-B W. Innes Street, Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Virginia Powell
BLANCH, N.C. — Virginia Henderson Powell, 81, of 330 Bill Powell Road, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at the residence following a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 21, 1919, in Ringgold, Va., she was a daughter of Raleigh Henderson and Annie Dawson Henderson.
She was married
to Frank Hill Powell, who predeceased her. She was a member of Purley United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Frankie Jean Chandler and Betty Sue Floyd, both of Danville, Va.; one son, Jerry Powell of Blanch; two sisters, Margaret Turner of Martinsville, Va., Beulah Lewis of Charlotte; three brothers, George Henderson of Leasburg, Ellis Henderson of Roxboro, and Roy Henderson of Yanceyville, and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one sister, Cordia Jennings.
The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Purley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Floyd Morrow officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville and at other times at the residence.
Odell Denny
LEASBURG, N.C. — Odell Brann Denny, 90, of 6614 U.S. Highway 158 E, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.
Born in Person County, she was the daughter of Charlie Jack Brann and Jenny Brooks Duncan Brann.
She was married
to Dorsey M. Denny Sr., who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Imogene Denny Lunsford of Mebane, Nell Denny Winstead of Danville, Va., Hazel Denny Winstead of Kannapolis; one son, Dorsey Mitchell Denny Jr. of Leasburg; six sisters, Onie B. Idol, Clara B. May, Lottie B. Oakes, all of Greensboro, Mebane B. Briggs of Leasburg, Lorene B. Sykes of St. James City, Fla., Orene B. Brann of Semora and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Brooks and White Chapel with the Rev. Sherrie James officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark T. Winstead, Carl G. Winstead, Marshall E. Lunsford, Jason T. Winstead, Larry Briggs, Jimmy Briggs, Percey "JR" Brann and Stephens Tatum. Interment will follow at Leasburg Community Cemetery in Leasburg.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks and White Chapel.

Fitzgerald Miles
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Fitzgerald Miles (Fee Jay), 51, of 277 First Avenue, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the residence after a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1949 in Caswell County, he was the son of Lila Bell Love Miles and Clayton Lincoln Miles.
Survivors include one son, Fitzerald Kimber of Yanceyville; four brothers, Clayton Miles Jr. of Burlington, James Preston Miles, Leotis Miles, Carl Miles, all of Yanceyville; four sisters, Virginia M. Totten, Mary Lou M. McCain, Janie Bell M. Watkins, all of Yanceyville and Gladys M. Abbot of Burlington, N.C.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers, Huston Miles, J.C. Miles and two sisters, Claudia Miles and Catherine M. Poteat.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence. Visitation will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Claude Walker officiating. Interment will follow at High Rock Baptist Church cemetery in Blanch.
The family will be receiving friends 1:30-2 p.m. Sunday at Providence Baptist Church and viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home.

Annette Watts
ROXBORO, N.C. — Annette Stanley Watts, 35, of 1704 Wall Street, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the residence.
Born Feb. 3, 1966 in Halifax County, Va., she was the daughter of Roger Leon Stanley Sr. and Betty Crews Adams, who survives.
She was married
to Christopher Scott Watts, who survives. She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church and worked as a bank teller for Roxboro Savings Bank.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Nathalie, Va. and husband, include two brothers, Roger Leon Stanley Jr. of Nathalie, Va., Christopher Wayne Powell of Brookneal, Va. and maternal grandmother, Myrtle Wade Crews of Nathalie, Va.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Childrey Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Barwick officiating. Interment will follow at Childrey Baptist Church cemetery in Nathalie, Va.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Betty Adams, 14185 L.P. Bailey Highway, Volens.
