Catherine Young

EDEN, N.C. — Catherine "Esther" Yeatts Gillie Young, 88, formerly of Eden, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Brian Center of Yanceyville.
Born in Schoolfield, Va., she was married icon to John Young, who predeceasaed her. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills.
Survivors include three sisters, Lois Norwood of Pelham, Charlene Black of Newport News, Va. and Ruth Hopkins of Danville, Va. and two brothers, Obie D. Yeatts of Pelham and Garland E. Yeatts of Bayonet Point, Fla.
She was predeceased, in addition to her husband, by one son, William O. Gillie; three brothers, Howard, Robert and Chester Yeatts and two sisters, Lorine Denton and Louise Mitchell.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Ridgeview Cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends at the residence of Lois Norwood, 5214 Old Highway 29, Pelham, NC 27311.
Fair Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangement

Robert Carter

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Robert Lee "Bob" Carter of 4210 Fairside Drive, Greensboro, North Carolina, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro, N.C., after two days in the hospital.
Born in Wentworth, North Carolina, he was the son of W.C. Carter, deceased, and Mary Elizabeth Barber Carter, living.
He was married icon to Sadie Payne Carter, living, of 4210 Fairside Drive, Greensboro, N.C. He was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church, Greensboro, N.C. He was a member of the American Legion of Greensboro, N.C. He lived most of his life in Greensboro, N.C. He was retired from Black Cadillac where he worked as a salesman. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy in WW II.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Greensboro, N.C., include two sons, Keith Lee Carter (Patricia) of Greensboro, NC, and Robert Joel Carter (Rose) of Greensboro, NC; one daughter, Diane Carter Shepard (Jerry) of Danville, VA; five very special nieces that were a big part of his life, Rebecca Lee Payne of the residence, Kim Carter Teich (Henry) of Asheville, NC, Lynn Carter LeFevre (Mike) of Murrells Inlet, S. Carolina, Debra Carter Thompson (Jeff) of Graham, NC, and Karen Carter Smith (Tony) of Graham, NC; three brothers, Cecil Carter of Florida, W.C. Carter of Florida and Lonnie Carter of Greensboro, NC; three sisters, Linda C. Henson of Greensboro, NC; Shirley C. Brown of Greensboro, NC, and Virginia C. Jeffreys of Greensboro, NC and five grandchildren.
The Graveside service will be held 4:00 P.M. Friday, April 27th at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with The Reverend Freddy Vicks officiating. Interment will be held at Highland Burial Park, with military honors by the American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 4210 Fairside Drive, Greensboro, NC.

Homer Compton

Greenville, N.C. — Homer Henry Compton, 88, of 988 Greenville Blvd., died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 17, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of J. Willie and Sue Slayton Compton.
He was married icon to Betty McLaughlin Compton, who survives. He graduated from Roanoke Business College and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He had lived in Greenville since 1953 and worked for American Tobacco Company before his retirement. He was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Greenville Golden K Kiwanis Club and a charter member of Brook Valley Country Club.
Survivors, in addition ot his wife, include one daughter, Linda Compton Clark of Greenville; two brothers, Lacy R. Compton and Johnnie S. Compton and three sisters, Belva C. Hall, Alma C. Adams and Margaret C. Hogan, all of Danville, Va.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, Linwood Compton and two sisters, Beatrice C. Dalton and Thelma C. Wiles.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Memorial Baptist Church. The graveside service will be held 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.
The family will be receiving friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made ot the Memorial Church, 1510 Greenville Blvd. S.E., Greenville, NC 27858 or Kentuck Baptist Church, 1845 Kentuck Church Road, Ringgold, VA 24586.
Wilkerson Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Davis

RUFFIN, N.C. — Margaret W. Davis, 85, formerly of 2267 Quick Road, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville following a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 8, 1915, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of William Davis and Nell Wilson Davis.
She was retired from the United States Government, where she was a Passport Officer.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, is in charge of arrangements.

Percy Gammon

PELHAM, N.C. — Percy Norman Gammon, age 68, of 1244 Arch Cook Road, Pelham, North Carolina, died Monday morning April 23, 2001 at his residence after a decline in health since 1989.
Mr. Gammon was born in the Vandola community of Pittsylvania County on February 4, 1933, a son of the late Jessie James Gammon and Irene Mize Gammon.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rosa Cook Gammon.
Mr. Gammon was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and had made his home in Caswell County, North Carolina living on the Arch Cook Road for the past 45 years. He was the manager of Sam’s Corner Convenient Market for a number of years, and was a member of State Line Baptist Church.
Survivors include one step daughter: Betty Wyatt of Darlington, South Carolina, and one step son: Danny Powell of Yanceyville, North Carolina, and two sisters: Mae Cassell and Inez Powell both of Danville, and one step granddaughter: Nikki Powell of the residence and one step great granddaughter: Destiny Taylor of the residence.
He was predeceased by one step daughter: Linda Cook, and also predeceased by a brother, James William Gammon.
The memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at State Line Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. The family will receive friends at the residence. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the State Line Baptist Church Building Fund, 651 Holland Road, Danville, VA 24541.

Carl Hughes

PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Carl Devoil Hughes, 78, of 267 Easy St., died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the residence after a period of declining health.
Born May 31, 1922, in Dickenson County, Va., he was the son of William McKinley Hughes and Virgie Yates Hughes.
He was married icon to Evelyn Stanley Hughes, who survives. He was educated in the Virginia County Schools and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the European Theater of Operations. He retired from Dan River Mills with 35 years of service.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Lenora H. Jones and Sherry H. Pyrant, both of Kannapolis; one son Aaron Hughes of Beaufort, S.C.; one sister, Anna Rae Seale of Kingsport, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepsons, Carol Smith of Providence and Lowell J. Smith of Tampa, Fla.; five step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with Military Graveside Rites conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Harrelson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Harrelson Funeral Home, Yanceyville, is in charge of arrangements.

Houston Pinchback

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. —Houston Floyd Pinchback, 55, of 102 Caldwell St., died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Willow Springs Nursing Facility in Chapel Hill.
Born May 5, 1945, in Caswell County, he was the son of William Pinchback and Mary Boswell Pinchback.
He was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church and was an employee of U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Survivors include one brother, Dewey Pinchback of Yanceyville; three sisters, Lillian Pinchback of Winston-Salem, Ruby Rogers of Port Arthur, Texas and Julia Edwards of Patterson, N.J.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Interment will be held at Blackwell Baptist Church cemetery.
Viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will be at the residence of his brother, 879 Purley Church Road, Yanceyville.
Fulton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Ribelin

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — George Odell Ribelin, 89, formerly of 643 Rudd Ridge Road, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at Blue Ridge Family Care Home in Reidsville.
Born Oct. 12, 1911, in Rowan County, he was the son of Paul W. Ribelin and Suddie Hannon Ribelin.
He was married icon to Fannie Ann Rudd Ribelin, who predeceased him in 1986.
He has a retired farmer and worked at Hanover Mills Inc. until his retirement. He was a member of Oakview Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three sons, William Ribelin and Willard G. Ribelin, both of Yanceyville and Paul T. Ribelin of Venton, Va.; one brother, Sam Ribelin of Lexington; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one sister, Ruby Lee Teeth Hill.
The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oakview Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Hillman and Elder Wallace Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville and other times at the residence of William Ribelin, 6073 Highway 62 South, Yanceyville.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Oakview Presbyterian Church, c/o Traci Chandler, 802 Oakview Loop Road, Yanceyville, NC 27379.
Marley Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Estelle Short

RUFFIN, N.C. — Estelle Bigelow Short, of 123 Oak Lane, Highway 700, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Moses Bigelow Sr. and Luella Jeffries Bigelow.
She was married icon to Weldon Short, who survives. She was a member of the Sassasfras Grove Baptist Church in Yanceyville where she was a member of the choir. She was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of Yanceyville, include four daughters, Shirdean L. James and Jeanette Short, both of Danville, Va., Savannah Marie Hardin of Ruffin and Connie Yvonne Short of Queens, N.Y.; two sons, Weldon Short Jr. and Charlie Short of New York; three brothers, Fred Bigelow of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Charles Albert Bigelow and James Bigelow, both of Yanceyville, and three sisters, Jane B. Dildy of Yanceyville, Juanita Yancey of Danville, Va., and Luella Blackwell of Norfolk, Va.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by three brothers, Moses Bigelow Jr., Joe Wallace Bigelow and William Bernard Bigelow.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sassasfras Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Bigelow officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held 7-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel and other times at the residence.
Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.
