Five Stars In The Window
By Jessie Gregory Hearp
It was a quiet Christmas eve, and the fires were burning low.
Mom said, “Dad, listen to the chatter of the stars, there’s something they want us to know.
They’re thinking of us and home, but have no way to show,
So quietly they listened while the lights glistened on the snow.
Listen very quietly now, I thought I heard one say,
I thought we would never get here, it sure was a long, long trip
They say it snows here all the time, barely misses a day,
And confidentially, I was home sick before we left the ship.
Oh, our trip over wasn’t bad, I heard another say,
But I didn’t know it would be so soon, but we crossed the English Channel today.
Now there is a job for everyone, as we can plainly see,
But I’m sure we can handle it for we want you to be free.
The third one sounded tired and weary of his load,
As he told how they were spending the night in a barn beside the road.
We’ve been fighting very hard: I’m glad Mom and Dad don’t know,
But I’ve got many, many buddies, row after row.
Dad, am I dreaming, or do you hear that chatter too?
The fourth one could always bring joy and laughter when you were feeling blue.
It seems such a mystery, you know, with them in the land.
These five stars there together still united in one band.
Oh, Dad, I believe that they are listening now to hear the fifth one say,
Yes, I am with you all, though far, far away.
Five trips to the station with good-byes that were so sad.
Are we the real, real soldiers,
Or is it Mom and Dad?

Surviving are his wife of fifty-Nine Years, Brattie West Gregory of the home, one son, Judge Edgar B. Gregory of Wilkesboro, two brothers, Davis Gregory, Douglas Gregory both of Danville, Virginia, one grandson, Bern Gregory of Wilkesboro and one granddaughter, Meredith Gregory of Wilkesboro.
