Roger Scarce
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Roger Henry “Toby“ Scarce, 56, of 698 Stephens Road died Friday, June 28, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 19, 1944, in Jacksonville, Fl., he was the son of Walter Henry Scarce and Lucy Inman Scarce.
He was married
to Lucy Reynolds Scarce, who survives. He lived most of his life in Danville and Providence for the past 27 years. He was a graduate of Whitmell High School and was formerly in the National Guard. He worked for Shamrock Printing Corp. in Greensboro as a printer operator. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving in the Vietnam War.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Tracy Scarce Cornell and Kathy Scarce, both of Providence and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Marvin Stephens
RUFFIN, N.C. — Marvin S. “Bud“ Stephens, 68, of 8745 U.S. 29 Business, Ruffin, NC went to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 30, 2001.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, July 2, 2001 at Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Tillman officiating. The interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Stephens had lived in Ruffin his entire life and was loved by everyone who knew him. He was a retired truck driver and farmer. He was a member of Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; Isaac and Marshie Stanley Stephens, Son; Roger Stephens and brothers, Don Stephens, Isaac Stephens, Jr. and Robert Osmond Stephens and Sister; Frances Stephens Huskey.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Temple Foster Stephens of the home, Sons; Marvin L. Stephens, Keith Stephens and wife, Gina, Daughter, Deb Bibee and Husband, Tim all of Ruffin, Grandchildre; Craig and Josh Bibee, Andrew, Jared and Erin Stephens, Beverly Stephens, Dwayne and Beth Shoemaker; Great Grandchildren; Christpher Shoemaker and Jordan Harrison, Brothers: John Stephens and wife, Catherine of Walkertown, George Stephens and wife, Jean, Jim Stephens and wife, Shelby and Phillip Stephens and wife, Kathy, Wayne Stephens and wife, Orenda all of Reidsville and Douglas Stephens and wife, Judy of Ruffin, Sister-in-law; Mildred Stephens of Kernersville. He had many special nieces and nephews and lots of special friends.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 1, 2001 from 7:00-9:00 PM at Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church and other times at the residence.
John Cunningham
SEMORA, N.C. — John Junior Cunningham, 64, of 12636 Highway 119 N, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 10, 1936, he was the son of Zell Cunningham and Alonzo Womack.
He was married
to Dorothy R. Cunningham, who survives. He was a native of Caswell County where he attended public schools and worked for Dan River Mills in Danville, Va. for 37 years.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four children, Brenda P. Johnson of Mebane, John W. Cunningham, Laura-Ann Cunningham and Angela Meyers, all of Reidsville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; one foster grandchild; five brothers, Leroy Womack, George Womack, John Rowland Womack, Alonza Womack and Earl Stewart and seven sisters, Leonie Brandon, Dorothy Thaxton, Jerline Thompson, Josephine Thompson, Melinda Turner, Catherine and Essie Goodman.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Semora with the Rev. P.D. Medley officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 12-5 p.m. Wednesday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel and a wake will follow 7-8 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Ryland Melton
ROXBORO, N.C. — Ryland Edward Melton, 68, of 100 Bunnie Huff Road, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at St. Joseph Mission Hospital in Asheville, following a sudden illness.
He was a native of Person County and was the son of Charlie Ryland and Bessie Denny Melton.
He was married
to Marjorie Dixon Melton, who survives. He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and worked for Collins and Aikman and Wal-Mart before his retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one son, Barry E. Melton of Roxboro; two daughters, Susan M. Lawrence of Roxboro and Lynn M. Saunders of Sutherlin, Va.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Burts and the Rev. Bob Baynard officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Sharon Bapitst Church and other times at the residence.

Carol Mimms
PELHAM, N.C. — Carol Benton Mimms, 46, of 1798 Red Marshall Road, died July 2, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1955, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Frank Benton and Essie Street Benton.
She was married
March 11, 1980, to Edward L. Mimms, who survives. She worked as a seamstress for Royal-Tex in Yanceyville.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one son, Eric Hamlett of Pelham; four stepsons, Edward L. Mimms Jr., Ronnie Mimms, Victor Mimms and Keith Mimms, all of Pelham; one stepdaughter, Jeanette M. Harville of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Billy Benton, Bryant Benton and Frank Benton, all of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Juanita Gammon of Pelham; Betty Loftis of Rockingham and Shirley Bowling of Danville, Va. and 14 grandchildren.

Thomas Price
PELHAM, N.C. — Thomas G. Price, 82, died June 28, 2001, in Danville, Va.
Born Jan. 2, 1919, in Meriwether County, Ga., he was the son of Burtred Campbell and Emma Susie Wells Price.
He was married
to Ethel Mae Walton Price, who predeceased him.
He lived in Danville, Va. since 1971 and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy.
He was plant manager of Dan River Mills until his retirement.
Survivors include three daughters, Paula Hamlett of Reidsville, Jana Baker and Dana Dalton, both of Pelham; two sons, Michael W. Price of Covington, Ga. and Tommy Price of Mansfield, Ga.; one brother, J.P. Price of Oxford, Ga.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held 3 p.m. Sunday at Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Walden officiating. Interment followed at Covington City Cemetery.

Daniel Robinson
RUFFIN, N.C. — Rev. Daniel Robinson, 79, of 160 Hat Creek Drive, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at the residence.
A native of Pikeville, Ky., he was the son of Patrick and Frankie McCown Robinson.
He was married
to Virginia Cox Newnam Robinson, who survives. He lived in Rockingham County for the past 6 1/2 years. He was a retired Baptist minister of churches in Bristol, Va., Yanceyville, Reidsville and Fairview Baptist Church in Eden. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Roger Robinson and Terry Robinson, both of Danville, Va.; three stepsons, Robin Newnam and Dale Newnam, both of Reidsville and Mark Newnam of Chesapeake, Va.; one stepdaughter, Jewel VanAble of Fayetteville; two brothers, Troy Robinson of Pikeville, Ky. and Delbert Robinson of Toledo, Ohio; six sisters, Della Milam of Tucumcari, N.M., Geneva Epling, Bessie France and Elizabeth Hunt, all of Pikeville, Ky., Donna Leedy of Columbus, Ohio and Joyce Smith of North Point, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by two brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church and other times at the residence.

Mary Brandon
MILTON, N.C. — Mary Jeffreys “Big Ma” Brandon, 83, of 994 Dotmond Road, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at the residence.
Born March 23, 1918, she was the daughter of Henry Jeffreys and Leathia Thaxton Jeffreys.
She was a native of Caswell County and attended the public schools of Caswell County.
Survivors include, four daughter, Joyce Gunter of Reidsville, Marie Barksdale of Alton, Va., Clara Brown of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mattie Anderson of Monticello, N.Y.; three sons, Paul Jeffreys of the residence, Leroy Athony Brandon of Milton, and James Brandon of Phil, Penn.; one sister, Catherine Saunders of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, William Drummond Jeffreys of the residence and Harry Jeffreys of Milton; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at New Haven Baptist Church with the Rev. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
A viewing will be held 12-5 p.m. Saturday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.
A wake will be held 7-8 p.m. Saturday at New Haven Baptist Church.

Elsie Carroll
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Elsie Mae McDowell Carroll, 82, of 1627 Park Springs Road died Saturday July 7, 2001 at Riverside Health Care Center following a period of declining health.
She was born June 28, 1919 in Caswell County to Gilbert H. and Ruby Hudson McDowell. She attended Caswell County Schools and Averett College, was a homemaker, and member of Providence Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for several years and was active in many of the church activities.
She was predeceased by her husband C. Swanson Carroll, Sr.
Survivors include 4 daughters Marie C. Winstead of Leasburg, Lois C. Easler and Kay C. Ewaldz, both of Blacksburg, S.C. and Shirley C. Burt of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. one son C. Swanson Carroll, Jr. of Providence, one sister Anne Clayton of Providence and one brother Harvey McDowell of Providence, eight grand-children and two great grandchildren
Funeral Services will be Tuesday 10 A.M. at Providence Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Ken Clark, Pastor, and Rev. Claude Harrelson. Interment will be in the church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, Providence Fire and Rescue or to the donors choice.
The family will receive friends and relatives Monday 7-8:30 P.M. at Harrelson Funeral Home.
William ‘Buck’ Jones
PELHAM, N.C. — William Joseph “Buck” Jones 86, of 199 Jones Road died Sunday July 8, 2001 at Brian Nursing Center, Yanceyville following a period of declining health.
He was born in Caswell County July 5, 1915 to Paul H. and Lemma Fowlkes Jones.
He attended Caswell County Schools and worked as Animal Control Officer for Caswell County also was employed by The Caswell Messenger for a period of time. He was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church serving as a Deacon and Elder for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife Vivian Hodges Jones of the home two daughters Judy J. Stillman of Atlanta, and Marie J. Vaughn of Danville, one daughter-in-law Barbara Wrenn of Providence, one brother Dr. Houston G. Jones of Chapel Hill, four grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a son Joseph Hodges Jones, a sister Pauline J. Jones and brother T.C. Jones.
Funeral services will be Tuesday 2 P.M. at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. George McDowell and Rev. Cleveland Duke. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday 7-8:30 P.M. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Yanceyville and at other times at the residence.
