Mark Meeks

PELHAM, N.C. — Mark David Meeks Sr., 27, of 1000 Newnam Road, Lot 9, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at the emergency room of Morehead Memorial Hospital, Eden.
Born, July 29, 1973, in Danville, he was a son of Marion Neal Meeks and Madelean Marshall Meeks, who survive.
He was married icon to Sandra Gibbs Meeks, who survives. He made his home in the Pelham community of Caswell County all his life. He was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church. He worked for Parkdale Industry in Eden for 10 years.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of Pelham and his wife of the residence, include one step daughter, Mary Beth Roberts of the residence; one son, Mark David Meeks Jr. of the residence; one sister, Carolyn Meeks of Pelham; two brothers, Ronald D. Meeks of Wentworth and Joseph Meeks of Blairs.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Inman. Internment will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence at Valley View Park and at the residence of his parents, 168 Lovelace Road, Pelham.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ellie Whitfield

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Ellie Wilson Whitfield, 88, of 913 N. Mebane St. died Friday, July 6, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after five days of serious illness.
Born in Erwin, she was the daughter of Carson C. Wilson and Hattie Wheeler Wilson.
She was married icon to the Rev. Don Scott Whitfield, who predeceased her. She was a member of Trinity Worship Center in Burlington and a member of the Retired Women’s Auxillary with her church and the Church Senior Citizens Group.
Survivors include one son, Wesley Clarke Whitfield of Danville, Va.; one sister Hazel Taylor of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Worship Center with the Rev. Darryl Cox and Dr. James A. Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington and at other times at the residence.
A viewing will be held 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Building Fund of Trinity Worship Center, 3157 South Church St., Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Pauline Alsop

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Pauline Millner Alsop, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died July 8, 2001 at Five Oaks Nursing Center in Concord, North Carolina.
Born in 1915, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Pratt and Wilma Cruise Pratt, and grew up in Spencer, Virginia. She was married icon to Pryor Reynolds Millner, III, from 1934 until his death in 1978 and had three sons, Pryor Reynolds Millner, IV (deceased) of Mooresville, North Carolina, James Lacy Millner of Richmond, Virginia, Paul Pratt Millner of Stafford, Virginia, and one daughter, Mildred Millner Alvarez, of Berkeley, California.
Known as “Polly” to her friends, she lived for a number of years in Danville, Virginia, where she was a homemaker, member of Main Street Methodist Church, and involved in church, school, and community activities. After moving to North Carolina in 1960, she worked at Belk’s Department Store in Charlotte in the lingerie department and was a member of First United Methodist Church where she played in the Bell Choir. She married icon the late Frederick Alsop in 1984.
In addition to her three children, she is survived by her sister, Hazel Robinson, of Concord, NC; five grandchildren, Sondra DeVincenzo of Wake Forest, NC, Joe Millner of Huntersville, NC, Paul, Kelly, and Melissa Millner of Stafford, VA, and two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Lindsey Millner of Huntersville; daughters-in-law, Barbara Reeves Millner of Mooresville, NC, Maureen Millner of Stafford, VA, Erica Glassman Millner of Richmond, VA; son-in-law, Walter Alvarez of Berkely, CA; and her grandchildren’s spouses, Lauren Millner of Huntersville and Bruce DeVincenzo of Wake Forest.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12 at First United Methodist Church of Charlotte, 501 North Tryon Street, conducted by the Reverend Betty Jeanne Day. (Parking will be available in the Odell Building parking garage. Enter off Ninth Street). Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 at Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel.

Mary Blackwell

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Mary Adelaide Mims Blackwell, of 2234 Lakeview Terrace, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at her residence.
Born May 10, 1928 in Caswell County, she was a daughter of John Mims and Matilda Mims.
She was a graduate of Caswell County Training School. She was self-employed as a Health Care Owner. She was a 4-H Club Advisor, Co-Founder of Blackwell Health Care Facilities, Caswell Count Home Demonstration Mother, Alamance-Caswell Rest Home Association and N.C. Rest Home Association. She was a member of Sassafras Grove Missionary Baptist Church, and attended First Baptist Church, Apple Street.
Survivors include three sons, Artis Blackwell and Faiger Blackwell, both of Burlington, and Carl Blackwell Sr. of Elon; one daughter, Deborah V. Blackwell of Burlington; one brother, James Mims of Yanceyville, N.C.; one sister, Florine Shoffer of Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from First Baptist Church, Apple St., with the Rev. Dr. Richard W. Styles officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. at the church, and at other times at the residence.
Blackwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Jones

MILTON, N.C. — Charlie Jones, 80, of 224 Milton, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C.
Born Aug. 25, 1920, in Danville, he was a son of Ellis Jones and Nannie Carter.
He was married icon to Louise Jones, who survives. He worked as a farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Milton, include eight sons, Charlie Jones Jr. of Washington, Thomas Jones, Michael Jones and Cheyenne Jones, all of Milton, Ellis Jones and Willard Jones, both of Temple Hill, Md., Larry Jones of Blanche, N.C. and Steve Jones of Danville; three daughters, Linda Swanson and Mae Stephens, both of Blanche and Josephine Echols of Milton; one sister, Dorothy Fitzgerald of Danville; 24 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. John Walton officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.

Rebecca Murphy

PELHAM, N.C. — Rebecca Annie Lea Hatchett Murphy of 572 Gwynn Chapel Road, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 6, 1928, she was a daughter of George Henry Hatchett and Rebecca Annie Lea Graves Hatchett.
She was married icon to James Henry Murphy, who predeceased her. She was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church where she sang in the senior choir and was a member of the missionary circle and kitchen committee. She was a graduate of Caswell County Training School and was an employee of Lacy and Janet Daniel. She was a consultant for Blair Products before a decline in health.
Survivors include six sons, James Murphy Jr. and William Murphy, both of Ruffin, N.C. John Murphy of Providence, N.C. Thomas Murphy, Freddie Murphy and Ernie Murphy, all of Pelham, N.C.; three daughters, Elizabeth Holmes, Carolyn Murphy and Mary Murphy, all of Pelham; one brother, Robert L Hatchett of McCleansville, N.C.; 23 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Red Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Gregory Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will be at the residence.
Fulton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Etta Womack

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Etta White Ingram Womack, 89, of 324 Bradley Road, died July 10, 2001, at Hospice of Charlotte.
Born Feb. 12, 1912, she was a daughter of Wiley and Bertha Neal White.
She was married icon to Hester Womack, who predeceased her. She was a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, William “Billy” Womack of Charlotte, N.C., Robert “Bobby” Ingram of Timberlake, N.C. and Mohammed A. Ali Ozell of Washington and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Camp Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Sehmen officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, N.C.

Okra Boyd

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Okra Mae Boyd, 98, died July 14, 2001, at Shomari Family Care.
Born Jan. 22, 1902, in Bluefield, she was the daughter of Nelson Boyd and Sally Pett Boyd.
She was married icon to Rubert Wright, who predeceased her. She was a registered nurse at Mayview Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was a member of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, Pa. and was educated in Bluefield public schools.
Survivors include four nephews, Carl Boyd of Philadelphia, Pa., Hobart Boyd of Danville, Eugene Kemp and William Kemp Jr., both of Los Angeles, Calif. and two nieces, Geraldine Morgan and Juanita Carter, both of Los Angeles, Calif.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Beavers Funeral Home with Pastor Doris Morrison officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.
The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Beavers Funeral Home.
Beavers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sallie Carter

GREENSBORO, N.C. —Sallie Booth Carter, age 95, of 2951 Isaacs Place, Greensboro, North Carolina, died Wednesday morning July 18, 2001 at the Beverly Health Care Center, Greensboro, North Carolina.
Mrs. Carter was born in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County on April 21, 1906, a daughter of the late John Robert Booth and Fannie Lou Hall Booth.
She was married icon to James S. Carter, who died in 1963.
Mrs. Carter had spent most of her adult life in Danville, where she was a homemaker. She attended Sheldon Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter: Peggy Hatcher of Greensboro, North Carolina; one grandson: Melvin Hatcher, Jr., and his wife Teresa Hatcher of Greensboro, North Carolina; one great grandson: Jeremy Harris of Nashville, Tennessee; and one sister: Blanche Whitfield of Lynchburg.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Scearce. The family will receive friends at the daughter’s residence 2951 Isaacs Place, Greensboro, NC. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jones

RALEIGH, N.C. — Mary Miles Jones, of 1203 Greenbriar Road, Kinston, N.C., died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Intergrated Health Services.
Born in Danville, she was a daughter of Thomas Miles and Mary Arnett.
She was married icon to Lamar Jones, who predeceased her. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. and was very active in community organizations and the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.
Survivors include two sons, Edward Miles Jones Jr. and Larmar Jones Jr., both of Raleigh; two daughters, Mary Arnette Jones McNamara of Cary and Cordelia Lamar Jones of Aventura, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westview Cemetery with the Rev. Jonathan Wallace officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, 2101 N. Heritage St., Kinston, N.C. 28501 or the American Cancer Society, 1021-B Red Banks Road, Greenville, N.C. 27834.
