Joseph Jones Jr.

RUFFIN, N.C. — Joseph Lester Jones Jr., 78, of 688 Worsham Mill Road, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Born in Caswell County, he was the son of Jospeh Lester and Annie Fitzgerald Jones.
He was married icon to Sarah Snead Jones, who survives. He had lived in the Ruffin area all of his life and was a member of Ruffin United Methodist Church. He was a farmer until his retirement and operated Jones’ Greenhouses for many years. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Judy J. Cardwell of Ruffin and Pat J. DuBray of Springfield, Ore.; one brother, Charlie Jones of Ruffin; four sisters, Dorothy Morgan of Orlando, Fla., Marie J. McFadden of Mt. Pleasant, Pa., Elizabeth J. Parrott of Corvallis, Ore. and Lucille J. Calhoun of Greensboro and one grandson.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Citty Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Tillman officiating. Interment will follow at Ruffin Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Citty Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Judy Cardwell, 306 Benton Road in Ruffin.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
Citty Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Saunders

PELHAM, N.C. — Robert Henry Saunders, of 622 Gwynn’s Chapel Road, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Brian Center Health Care, Yanceyville, N.C.
Born in Pelham, he was married icon to Eva W. Saunders, who survives. He was a member of Gwynn’s Chapel Baptist Church. He was a member of Pelham Lodge No. 571 and was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He was employed for eight years with Belk-Leggett.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Yanceyville, include one sister, Phyllis Webb of Pittsburgh, Pa.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Gwynn’s Chapel Baptist Church in Pelham with the Rev. Charles Glynn and the Rev. J.B. Doe officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
McLaurin Funeral Home in Reidsville is in charge of arrangements.

Huston ‘Doc’ Slade

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Huston “Doc” Slade of 583 Main St., Old Farm Apt. 7A, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Born in Caswell County, he was the son of Willie Slade and Goldie Phillips Slade. He was a member of the Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. and was a retired construction worker.
Survivors include three sons, Lavarn Slade of Baltimore, Md., Morris Slade of Roxboro and James Lamont Lea of Edgefield, S.C.; four daughters, Mary Alice Madden and Lavern Johnson, both of Blanch, Dianna Lynn Jeffries of Yanceyville and Teresa Ann Slade of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Elbert Slade Sr. of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Goldie Slade Bell and Sally Slade, both of Yanceyville; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clifton Madden officiating. Interment will follow at Graves Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive frinds at the residence of Mary Madden, 1895 High Rock School Road in Blanch and the residence of Goldie Slade Bell, Main Street, Old Farm Apt. in Yanceyville.
Fulton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Corbett

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Bobby Lee Corbett, 58, of 6283 Badgett Sister Parkway, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born April 27, 1943, in Caswell County, he was a son of Samuel Corbett and Hattie Bell Corbett McCadden.
He was married icon to Judy Bigelow Corbett, who survives. He worked as a fixer for Fairlaine in Gibsonville for many years until his decline in health. He was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three sons, Mark Corbett of Burlington, Brent Corbett and Kenric Corbett, both of Yanceyville; one daughter, April Corbett of Raleigh; four brothers, Daniel Corbett of Burlington, Theotis Corbett, the Rev. Floyd Corbett and Isaac Corbett, all of Yanceyville; five sisters, Betty Brown of Yanceyville, Mae Lewis Elliott and Mae Connally, both of Milton, Rebecca McCadden of Petersburg, Va., and Patricia Corbett Miles of Burlinton; and four grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Graves Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Walker officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Fulton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Crumpton

PROVIDENCE, N.C. —Frances Lee Evans Crumpton, 66, of 255 Jeffress Road Ext., died Friday August 3, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 18, 1935 in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Hollis Evans and Carrie Mitchum Carthen Evans.
She was married icon to Sam David Crumpton, who survives. Mrs. Crumpton worked as a charge nurse at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one daughter, Patricia C. Farmer of Blanche, NC; one son-in-law, Barry S. Farmer of Blanche, NC; and two grandsons, Barry W. Farmer and Edward A. Farmer, both of Blanche, NC.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Calvin Hines officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sydelle Gerber

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sydelle Reba Gerber, 83, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center after a prolonged illness.
Born in 1917, in New York City, she was the daughter of Barnett and Celia Katzman.
She was married icon to Rabbi Israel J. Berber, who survives. She was active in the Charlotte Jewish and general community where she was a member of Temple Beth El Sisterhood and co-chaired its interfaith committee for many years. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah, the Board of Directors of the Florence Crittendon Home and a member of B’nai Brith Women where she chaired the Sick and Loan Chest Committee. She was named one of Charlotte’s ten best-dressed women in 1969. She had a fondness for the Jewish community of Danville, Va., where her husband is the rabbi of Temple Beth Shalom and Dothan, Ala., where he also served.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include daughters, Barbie Parker of Atlanta, Ga., and Sharon Gerber of New York City; son, Wayne Gerber of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren and brother, Norman Katzman of California.
The memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Temple Beth El. Interment will take place Tuesday at Beth Moses Cemetery in Pinelawn, N.Y.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 or Temple Beth Shalom or Charlotte Jewish Family Services.

Henry Jeffries

MILTON, N.C. — Henry Allen Jeffries, 68, of 75 E.C. Jones Road, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 25, 1932, in Caswell, he was the son of Maude and Pinckey Jeffries.
He was married icon to Dorothy Jeffries, who survives. He attended the public schools of Caswell.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Milton, include four sons, Ray A. Jeffries of Danville, Va., James Jeffries and Tony Jeffries, both of Milton and Reginald Jeffries of Washington, D.C.; five daughters, Jackie Jeffries and Terry Henderson, both of Milton, Connie Jeffries of Greensboro, Larita Motley of Danville, Va. and Evelyn Graves of Pelham; two brothers, James Jeffries of Pittsburg, Pa. and Ernest Jeffries of Semora; three foster brothers, John Johnson and Ivory Johnson, both of Milton and Jack Johnson of Detroit, Mich.; four sisters, Beatrice Irving and Dorothy McCain, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Corina Bynum on Durham, N.C. and Eva Winstead of Roxboro; three foster sisters, Louise Graves and Sally Johnson, both of Baltimore, Md. and Hurley Williams of Yanceyville and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Milton with the Rev. Clyde Long officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. Thursday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.
Plenty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Don Marlowe

MANTEO, N.C. — Don Wayne Marlowe, 30, of Gilbert St. died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at the residence.
Born Oct. 19, 1970, in Elizabeth City, N.C., he was the son of Jerry Wayne Marlowe and Gloria Alexander, who survive. He was a member of Manteo Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents of Manteo, include one half brother, Christopher Lee of Kill Devil Hills; his paternal grandmother, Frances R. Marlowe of Callands; and his maternal grandparents, Edward Alexander and Wanda Jean Schaffer of Manteo.
He is predeceased by one brother, Jerry Wayne Marlowe Jr.
The graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at County Line Christian Church Cemetery with Dean Ashby, Minister officiating.

John Smith Sr.

GIBSONVILLE, N.C. — John Pelzer Smith, Sr., of 144 Brown Road, Gibsonville, died on Sunday, August 5, 2001 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with the interment following at Alamance Memorial Park, Burlington.
Mr. Smith was born in Dickerson County, Virginia to the late John M. Smith and Naomi Raznik Smith. He was employed by Burlington Industries as a loom technician. He was preceded in death by his brother, Boyd Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Horner Smith of the home; son, John P. Smith, Jr. and a step-son, Donald Wayne Smith, both of the home; daughter, Debra Ann Smith of Danville, Virginia; granddaughter, Tanya Whitt of Madison; sisters, Merle McClain, Nancy Sparks, Ruth Smith, Emily Brooks and Carol Sea all of Danville, Virginia and Bonnie Smith of South Carolina; brother, Bernard Smith of Albany, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM and other times at the residence.

Herman Johnson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Herman Edward “Sun” Johnson, 67, of 137 Dillard School Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 16, 2001 in Caswell County, he was a son of James Johnson and Lizzie Hill Johnson.
He was married icon to Lois Lipscomb Johnson, who survives. He was a Saw Mill employee before retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Donald Johnson and Carl Johnson, both of Yanceyville; three daughters, Bonnie Johnson, Carla Jefferies and Ronda Taylor, all of Yanceyville; one brother, James Johnson of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Debra Johnson and Fannie Johnson, both of Yanceyville and Nettie Ann Allen of Charleston, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cephus Lea officiating. Interment will follow at Hamer Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 8-9 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
