Susie Hughes

MILTON, N.C. — Susie Anna Brown Hughes, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 19, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Simpson and Lucy Brown.
A native of Caswell County, Hughes attended the county public schools and was a member of the New Haven Baptist Church in Milton. She also served in the missionary circle at New Haven.
Hughes was a married icon to the late Irvin C. Hughes Sr.
She is survived by eight children, Irvin Hughes Jr. and Richard Hughes of Milton, Leon Hughes of Oceantownship, N.J., Curtis Hughes and Mae Woods of Danville, Va., Linda Faulkner of South Boston, Va., Gladys Wheeler of Reidsville and Greg Hughes of Winston-Salem; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Geneva Jones of Washington, Mae Ella Garland of Ringgold and Josephine Johnson of Milton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Milton with the Rev. Carl Ross officiating. Interment will follow at the New Haven Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1-8 p.m. Thursday at the Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora.

Calvin ‘Cal’ Moore

KURE BEACH, N.C. — Calvin “Cal” Shelton Moore of Kure Beach, NC died Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at Hew Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born January 27, 1927 in Danville, VA, son of the late Albert and Elizabeth Sawyer Moore.
Mr. Moore was very involved with the Kure Beach Renourishment Project. He served on the Board of Advisors for the Ocean Dunes Homeowners Association. After 32 successful years in management with Sears, Mr. Moore owned and operated World Bazaar for 22 years.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Bondurant Moore of the home; one son, Alan Moore and wife Roseanne of Augusta, GA; two grandsons, Benjamin Moore of Augusta, GA and Alan Moore, Jr. and wife Leah of Atlanta, GA; and one great-grandson, Alan Moore, III.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2001 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel by The Rev. Robert D. Morrison, Jr.
Memorials may be made to the Town of Kure Beach, Beach Renourishment Fund, 117 Settlers Lane, Kure Beach, NC 28449, or the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville Street Mall, Two Hannover Square, Ste. 1600, Raleigh, NC 27601.

William Donald Roberts

PELHAM, N.C. — William Donald Roberts, 44, of 4454 Park Springs Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001 as result of an accident while working at an construction site.
Born Dec. 28, 1956 in Danville, Roberts was a son of the late William Thomas Roberts and Dorothy Lynch Roberts, who survives.
Roberts was a graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville and was a supervisor of Quality Construction of Danville Inc.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one daughter, Charlotte Roberts of Elon College; one son, William Seth Roberts of Elon College; four sisters, Cindy Hammock of Danville, Va., Nancy Lawlsess of Providence, Vicky Pruitt of Ruffin and Patty Roberts of Pelham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Hussey and the Rev. James Mayes officiating.
The place of interment will be announced later.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and other times at the residence of his sister Vicky Pruitt, 230 Pruitt Drive, off Berry Hill Road in Ruffin.

Deborah Collins

PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Deborah Compton Collins, 52, of 36 Collins Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at the residence after 15 years of declining health.
Born Sept. 3, 1949, in Danville, she was the daughter of Curtis Compton and Isabelle Stowe Compton.
She was married icon to Larry Monroe Collins, who survives. She had lived in Providence for the past 15 years. She was employed as a newspaper carrier with the Danville Register prior to her retirement. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Lori Collins Barton of the residence; two brothers, Theron Compton and Marlon Compton, both of Danville, Va. and one sister, Melody C. Murphy of Pelham.
The memorial service will be held at a later date.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Otha ‘Sandy’ Hodges

GRAHAM, N.C. — Otha McKinley “Sandy” Hodges, 74, of 800 Sycamore Road, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Hospice Home in Burlington.
He was a son of James Will and Valnay Smith Hodges.
He was married icon to Larue Allred Hodges, who predeceased him. He was retired from AT&T/Lucent Technologies and was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
Survivors include one son, Kevin Hodges of Graham; two stepdaughters, Susan Simmons of Burlington and Gail Re of Burlington; three sisters, Golden Haymore, Iris White and Helen Annholt, all of Danville, Va.; and two brothers, Herman Hodges of Lexington, Ky. and Ira T. Hodges of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham with the Rev. Jim Hobbs officiating. Interment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative care of Alamance/Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.
McClure Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hilda Hundley

STONEVILLE, N.C. — Hilda Davis Hundley, 75, of 303 Bryan St., died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Morehead Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 10, 1926, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of Clarence Davis and Dora Rollins Davis.
She was married icon to Carl L. Hundley Sr., who predeceased her. She was the owner of Hundley’s Grocery before her retirement and was a member of Stoneville Christian Church.
Survivors include four daughters Claudia Hundley of Rocky Mount, Va., Carla Kasten of Stoneville, Ellen Hundley of Eden and Mary Ann Whitten of Texas; two sons, Jake Hundley and Chuck Hundley, both of Stoneville; three brothers, Ralph Davis, Herman Davis and Joe Davis, all of Gasonia; one sister, Irene Broome of Gastonia; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stoneville Christian Church with the Rev. Buddy Self officiating. Interment will follow at Stoneville City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Ray Funeral Home in Madison and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Eden Rescue Squad, 106 Mabel St. in Eden.
Ray Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Viola Bryson

PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Viola Ware Bryson, age 83, of 611 Ware Road, Providence, North Carolina, died at her residence Monday morning October 29, 2001.
Mrs. Bryson was born in Caswell County, North Carolina on January 30, 1918, a daughter of the late James Emmitt Ware and Bertha Gillispie Ware.
She was married icon to Rev. Alonzo E. Bryson who survives.
Mrs. Bryson had spent most of her life in the Providence community of Caswell County, North Carolina where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to her husband of the residence include one daughter: Dr. Aloha E. Bryson and son in law, Dr. David R. Soderquist of Granite Falls, North Carolina, and one son: J. Ralph Bryson of Providence, North Carolina, and one brother: Raymond Vester Ware of Providence, North Carolina, and three sisters: Nettie W. Bray, Alice W. Miller, and Sarah W. Guthrie all of Providence, North Carolina, and two grandchildren: J. Ryan Bryson of Boone, North Carolina, and Shannon R. Bryson of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, and one great grandson: Kody Metcalf of Carolina Beach, North Carolina.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph D. Ware and William Adrian Ware.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley. Interment will follow at the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at the residence at other times.

Rosie Cunningham

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Rosie Lea Cunningham, 46, of Ralph Scott Group Homes, died Monday morning, Oct. 29, 2001, at Alamance Regional Hospital.
Born April 27, 1955, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Beatrice Cunningham, who survives, and Herbert Cunningham.
Survivors, in addition to her mother of Milton, include seven sisters, Iola Cunningham of the residence, Isabella Bailey of Milton, Dorothy Graves of Ringgold, Va., Mabel McCain, Leona Person, Carolina Cunningham and Queen Rosa, all of Maryland; two brothers, Rosevelt Cunningham of Semora and David Cunningham of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Semora with the Rev. Preston Medely officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora.
Plenty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ella Dorsett

PELHAM, N.C. — Ella Gatewood Dorsett, 79, of 2251 Chandler Mill Road, died on Thursday, November 1, 2001 at Annie Penn Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, Novmeber 4, 2001 at Lively Stones Baptist Church with the interment following Danville Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Dorsett is a native of Rockingham County. She retired from Burlington Industries after 12 years of service. She was a member of Lively Stones Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Francis Dorsett; sisters, Rosie Yeatts and Mamie Lipford; brothers, Charlie Gatewood, Marvin Gatewood and Melvin Gatewood.
She is survived by her sons, Larry F. Dorsett and wife, Janice and Jerry M. Dorsett and friend, Brenda Overby all of Pelham; daughters, Patricia D. Poindexter and husband, John of Pelham and Donna Ligon of Ruffin; sisters, Ruby Funderburk of Martinsville and Gordia Roberts of Stoneville.
5 Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home Saturday, November 3, 2001 from 7:00 PM-9:00 PM an at other times at the home of Pat Poindexter at 138 Rayburn Street, Pelham.

Ollie Hayes

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Ollie Roosevelt Hayes, 85, formerly of Providence, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 31, 2001, at Brian Center in Yanceyville after three years of declining health.
Born June 15, 1916, in Rockingham County, he was the son of Earl Hayes and Kate Pruitt Hayes.
He was married icon to Mozelle Miller Hayes, who predeceased him. He lived most of his life in Danville, Va., where he was owner and operator of Ollie Hayes junk yard for a number of years on Whitmell Street extension until his retirement in 1978. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one son, Bobby Lee Hayes and one sister, Beatrice Merricks.
Survivors include one daughter, Iva Jean Hayes Alderson; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Daniel Lackey officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Ricky Hayes, 2674 Walters Mill Road in Providence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
