Vera May

PELHAM, N.C. — Vera Beverly May, 84, formerly of 1315 Lovelace Road, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville after six years at the center.
Born Aug. 25, 1917, she was a daughter of Eugene W. Ferguson and Sallie Barber Ferguson.
She was predeceased by her husband, Homer May. She lived most of her life in the Danville area, where she was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include four daughters, Louise Wilkerson of Pelham, Nora B. Hough of Charlotte and Peggy B. Pruitt and Dorothy Beverly, both of Danville; one son, Billy W. Beverly of Danville; three stepsons, Lantie May, James May and Arlie May, all of Danville; one stepdaughter, Mary Starcher; three brothers, Raymond P. Ferguson, Wesley Eugene Ferguson and Thomas Preston Ferguson, all of California; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Interment will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Vernon Hayton officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Wilson

PELHAM, N.C. — Charlie Lindberg Wilson, 69, of 804 Holland Road, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at the residence.
Born Jan. 31, 1932, in Caswell County, he was a son of Roy Wilson and Elizabeth Powell Wilson.
He was married icon to Doris Wilson, who survives. He was a retired independent truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Phyllis Vanessa Wilson of Patterson, N.J. and one sister, Mona F. Jones.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathan Scovens officiating. Interment will follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery with military honors performed by American Legion Post 29.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Garland

SEMORA, N.C. — Joseph Lewis Garland, 68, of 630 Crutchfield Road, died Wednesday night, Nov. 21, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 23, 1933, he was the son of Bessie Garland and Otho Torrain.
He was married icon to Louise Crutchfield, who survives. He was educated in Caswell County and served in the Korean War.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two daughters, Robin Renee Garland of the residence and Jennifer Lynn Garland of Charlotte; one sister, Pearl Hester of Hillsborough and one brother, David Torrain of Hillsborough.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at High Rock Baptist Church in Blanch with the Rev. Robert Broadnax officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 12-8 p.m. Friday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora.
Plenty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Smith

PROVIDENCE, N.C. —Raymond Eugene Smith, 66, of 41 Short Road, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at the residence after declining health since 1977 and 10 years in serious condition.
Born Aug. 1, 1935, in Pelham, he was a son of Jimmy Thomas Smith and Evelyn Street Smith.
He was married icon to Gloria Ann Keesee Smith, who survives. He lived in Wilmington for 13 years and was a barber for a number of years before his retirement in 1970. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Jimmy Ray Smith of Dry Fork, Va. and Timothy S. Smith of the residence; one brother, Wilbert Smith of Penhook, Va.; and one grandson.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brady Willis officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Belton

EDEN, N.C. — Ralph Ernest Belton, 81, formerly of 700 W Highway, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
Born in Patrick County, Va., he was a member of First Wesleyan Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the 10th Mountain Calvary and received the Bronze Star. He was employed with G.B. Green and Son.
Survivors include one son, Ralph Everette Belton of Eden; one daughter, Linda Belton Hopper of Eden; and four grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Linda B. Hopper, 512 Cedar St. in Eden.
The family suggests memorials be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215.

William Gibson

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. —William Boyd Gibson, 71, of 112 Old Oak Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born in Portsmouth, Va., he was a son of Reather Whitley Gibson and Ernest W. Gibson.
He was married icon to Anne Elizabeth Garrett Gibson, who predeceased him Oct. 3, 2001. He worked as a general yardmaster for Norfolk-Southern Railway prior to his retirement.
Survivors include four daughters, Janice Eileen Webster of Sewell, N.J., Belinda Rae Combs of Danville, Va.; Patricia Ann Mathias of Suffolk, Va. and Carol Owens of Chesapeake, Va.; two sons, Richard Arthur Cronin Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va. and John Edward Cronin of Silver Springs, Md.; one sister, Helen Louise Bailey of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his wife and parents, by one daughter, Cathy Melinda Barnard, and one brother, Alvin Lee Gibson.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Olive Branch Cemetery with the Rev. Allen L. Dooley officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel.
Snellings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments.

Clarence ‘Dink’ Hale

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Clarence “Dink” Hale, of 813 E. 11th St., died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hawkins Family Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Hospice of Halifax County, 1225 Julian R. Allsbrook Highway in Roanoke Rapids.

Leon Smith

PELHAM, N.C. — Leon Jackson Smith, 61, of 19 Fitzgerald Road, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the residence.
Born Sept. 8, 1940, in Danville, he was a son of Rose Fields Smith, who survives, and Hurd R. Smith.
He lived most of his life in Caswell County and worked as a carpenter and at Dan River Mills prior to a disability.
Survivors include two daughters, Roseanna Smith of Pelham and Jacklyne Smith of Greensboro; one son, Lee Smith of California; two sisters, Kallie Bradley and Barbara Thomas, both of Pelham; one brother, James Smith of Pelham; and three grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Cook officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his niece, Judy Dalton, 528 Red Marshall Road in Pelham.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lillie Fowlkes

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Lillie Jones Walker Fowlkes, 91, formerly of 850 Allison Road, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Reidsville Rehabilitation Center, after a long period of declining health.
Born April 12, 1910, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Robert H. and Caroline Bennett Jones.
She was married icon first to Raymond Walker, who predeceased her May 1935, and later married icon Robert J. Fowlkes, who predeceased her July 1977. She was educated at Caswell County Schools, was a homemaker, and was a member of Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Walker Shumate of Yanceyville; two sons, Rob Walker of Yanceyville, and Raymond B. Walker of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Nellie Jones Hodges of Yanceyville; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Wallis Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Harrelson Funeral Home and other times at 435 Wall St. and 928 Main St. in Yanceyville.
Harrelson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
