Maxton, NC - Mr. James Ferguson McIntyre, Jr., 60, of Hwy. 83 South died Wednesday, January 16, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hillside Memorial Park.
He is survived by two sons, James McIntyre, III of Bennettsville, SC and Lee McIntyre of Hamer, SC; three daughters, Lisa Ann Bryant of Greensboro, Pam Cribb of Cary and Brandy McGirt of Laurinburg; four sisters, Sarah Thompson and Carol Gentry of Maxton, and Jean Smith of Hamer, SC; 7 grandchildren.
Born February 29, 1931 in Robeson County, he was a son of the late James F. and Myrtle McKenzie McIntyre. He was formerly employed with Johns-Manville and LOF Glass.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Dawn Trull Lassiter, 56, of 1213 Charles Drive died Monday, January 28, at her home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Revs. Kyle Batson, Frieda Cole and the Rev. Dr. Mack Thompson.
Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, Ebbie Lassiter; two daughters, Angie Lassiter of Laurinburg and Kim L. Thornburgh of Mobile, AL her mother, Ruth Trull of Concord; two grandchildren; Kendall and Dawson Thornburgh of Mobile, AL.
Born February 5, 1945 in Concord, she was also a daughter of the late Fred Lee Trull.
Dawn had a long, proud history as a registered nurse in Scotland County. She worked with Dr. George Creed, Dr. David Williams, Scotland Memorial Hospital, Fieldcrest-Cannon, and most recently with West Point – Stevens as a division nurse coordinator. She was an active member of Sandhills Community Church and a long time volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Gulf Breeze, Fla. - Wesley Leroy Orr, 67, of 122 Gilmore Drive Gulf Breeze, FL died peacefully in his home Thursday January 3, 2002.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel in Laurinburg, NC. Mr. Terry Fisher will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
He is survived by a son, Keith Orr of San Francisco, CA; a daughter, Kelly Fisher of Cincinnati, OH; a step-son Michael Beane of Clarksville, TN; a step-daughter, Glenda Beane Faxon of Tallahassee, FL.; sisters, Vesta Mann and Raenella Craddock both of Gulf Breeze, FL and Beverly Tonnemacher of Birmingham, AL. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jerilyn and Jamilyn DeCorte both of Cincinnati, OH, Devin Faxon of Tallahassee, FL and Mariah and Megan Beane both of Clarksville, TN.
He was born November 16, 1934 in Carthage, MO, a son of the late George Harris and Ruth Norton Orr. He was a US Navy Veteran and for many years owned and operated a commercial moving business. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Orr July 11, 2000.
Visitation will be 7 - 9 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
Joseph Porter Gardner

Yanceyville, NC - Joseph Porter Gardner, 93, of Brian Nursing Center, Yanceyville, NC, died Monday Jan 14, 2002 in Danville Regional Medical Center Danville, VA.
Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 pm. Thursday at Caledonia United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Anna Kelly officiating.
He is survived a son, Monroe Gardner of Reidsville, NC. A brother H.C. “Cub” Gardner of Laurinburg, NC. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Born July 21, 1908 in Scotland County a son of the late Vernon and Rosa Porter Gardner. He was a retired guard with the Department of Corrections. He was preceded in death by his son J.P. Gardner, Jr. and his brother Hugh Gardner.
Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.

Laurel Hill, NC - Mr. James Carl “J.C.” Tyndall, Sr., 73, of 9460 Morgan Street Laurel Hill, died Saturday Jan. 19, 2002 at his home.
Born September 18, 1928 in McColl, SC. A son of the late Walter and Lena Moody Tyndall. He was a retired, self employed painting contractor and earlier in life worked for Springs Mills in Laurel Hill. He was preceded in death by his sons Otis Tyndall and James Tyndall, Jr. and a grandson James Tyndall, III.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Church of God of Prophecy in Laurel Hill with the Rev. Jim Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
Mr. Tyndall is survived by his wife of 46 years Ruth Frier Tyndall of the home, sons, Mitchell Tyndall and Keith Yates both of Laurel Hill, daughters, Janice McCaskill and husband Larry of New London, NC and Darlene Johnson and husband Jerry of Laurel Hill, a brother Walter Tyndall of Darlington, SC and his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Freemen, Sarah McColl and Martha Haney all of Bennettsville, Lena Mae Lane, Rose Summerford and Brenda Freeman all of Latta, SC. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7-9:00 pm. at the McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy W. Henry Culbreth Gardner

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Henry Culbreth “Cub” Gardner, 77, of 210 Midland Way died Friday, February 1, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Barrineau officiating. Burial will follow at Caledonia United Methodist Church Cemetery.
“Cub” was born July 14, 1924 in the Old Shaw Home in Scotland County and was a son of the late Vernon and Rosa Porter Gardner. He was a US Army Veteran, serving in the European theatre during WWII, where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and numerous battle ribbons. “Cub” was a member of the Laurinburg Police Department 37 years, serving honorably from June 5, 1949 to August 1, 1986 when he retired as Chief detective. He also served the community as a football coach for Scotland County Parks and Recreation, helping shape the lives of many Laurinburg youth.
He is survived by his beloved wife Kathleen D. Gardner of the home; four sons, David Culbreth Gardner and wife, Sally of Laurinburg, James Wilson “Jimmy” Gardner and wife, Dawn of Gibson, NC, Kenneth Malcolm Gardner of Savannah, GA. and Gary Alan and wife, Ann of Laurinburg; a daughter, Ellen G. Best and husband, James “Shim” Best of Waldorf, MD. Also surviving are his six grandchildren Jason, Sandy Matthew and Devin Gardner and James and Valerie Best.

Red Springs - Mr. Cecil C. “Chuck” Wade, Jr., 74, of 4300 Red Springs Road, Red Springs, NC died Tuesday Feb. 26, 2002 at his home.

He is survived by his step-son James Johnson of Havelock, NC; a step-daughter Mary Lee Wannamaker of Cincinnati, OH; two sisters, Affra Lenwell of Pierston, IN and Beverly Talbert of Villa Grove, IL; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Born Feb. 7, 1927 in Bloomington, IN he was a son of the late Cecil C. and Leona Gray Wade. He was retired from the US Postal Service, a veteran of the US Navy and the US Marine Corps and was an active member in the Laurinburg Christian Church where he served as a Deacon.

Pearl Gray Thompson Abernathy

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Pearl Gray Thompson Abernathy, 102, of Scotia Village and formerly of Charlotte died Tuesday, February 26, at Scotia Village.
A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Tartan Solarium, Scotia Village. A committal service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Neely's Creek ARP Church near Rock Hill, SC.
She is survived by one son, The Rev. Harry Abernathy and wife, Penny of Armonk, NY; two grandsons; Peter Abernathy of Bennington, VT and Cam Abernathy of Armonk, NY; a great granddaughter, Grace Kenney Abernathy of Bennington, VT.
Born January 20, 1900 in Wilkes County, she was a daughter of the late Moses E. and Minnie Etty Yates Thompson. She was formerly associated with Pegram Associates, an architectural firm and later with Queen City Coach in Charlotte. In the 1950's she began Sharon Gardens nursery in Charlotte and operated it for over 30 years.
Alta Hubbard Gibson

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Alta Hubbard Gibson, 80, of 710 W. Covington St., died Tuesday, February 26, at Duke University Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Revs. Nick Mager and Elizabeth Forester. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
She is survived by a daughter, Adair Boyer of Raleigh; a brother, Bruce Hubbard of Plain View, TX; two sisters; Sarah Bristow of Bennettsville, SC and Elsie Caldwell of St. Petersburg, FL.
A native of Marlboro County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Bruce and Sallie A. Covington Hubbard. Alta was a realtor and was a member of the Scotland County Board of realtors and the Scotland County Chamber of Commerce.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am. Saturday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel with the Rev. Nancy Willard officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Maxton.
She is survived by her husband John Henry Thompson, a son James David “Jimmy” Thompson of Laurinburg, three daughters, Deborah Dial and Linda Spencer both of Laurinburg and Rose Marie Woollen of Arlington, VA. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was born February 23, 1921 in Richmond County, NC a daughter of the late Charles and Hazel Dean Vick McDade. She was a homemaker.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. at McDougald Funeral and other times at the home of her daughter Linda’s home 2012 Lake Drive Laurinburg, NC.
