Laurel Hill - Franklin Roosevelt “Uncle Frank” Dunn, 69, of 14701 Lauder St. died Tuesday, February 26, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday Laurel Hill United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Keith Brown. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by a sister, Lela Campbell of Gastonia and several nieces and nephews.

Born September 28, 1932 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Minnie Pearl Robinson Dunn. He formerly worked with McCoy’s service Station in Laurinburg and later with the light and water department of Z. V. Pate, Inc. He was a member of the American Legion.

Memorials may be made to Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, PO Box 217, Laurel Hill, NC 28351.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at McDougald Funeral Home, Laurel Hill.

Pearl Gray Thompson Abernathy
Born in Wilkes County, NC on Jan. 20, 1900
Departed on Feb. 26, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Pearl Gray Thompson Abernathy, 102, of Scotia Village and formerly of Charlotte died Tuesday, February 26, at Scotia Village.

A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Tartan Solarium, Scotia Village. A committal service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Neely's Creek ARP Church near Rock Hill, SC.

She is survived by one son, The Rev. Harry Abernathy and wife, Penny of Armonk, NY; two grandsons; Peter Abernathy of Bennington, VT and Cam Abernathy of Armonk, NY; a great granddaughter, Grace Kenney Abernathy of Bennington, VT.

Born January 20, 1900 in Wilkes County, she was a daughter of the late Moses E. and Minnie Etty Yates Thompson. She was formerly associated with Pegram Associates, an architectural firm and later with Queen City Coach in Charlotte. In the 1950's she began Sharon Gardens nursery in Charlotte and operated it for over 30 years.

Alta Hubbard Gibson
Born in Scotland County, NC on May. 1, 1921
Departed on Feb. 26, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Alta Hubbard Gibson, 80, of 710 W. Covington St., died Tuesday, February 26, at Duke University Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Revs. Nick Mager and Elizabeth Forester. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

She is survived by a daughter, Adair Boyer of Raleigh; a brother, Bruce Hubbard of Plain View, TX; two sisters; Sarah Bristow of Bennettsville, SC and Elsie Caldwell of St. Petersburg, FL.

A native of Marlboro County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Bruce and Sallie A. Covington Hubbard. Alta was a realtor and was a member of the Scotland County Board of realtors and the Scotland County Chamber of Commerce.

Memorials may be made to the Scotland County Home Health, PO Box 2227, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Rosa Gibson Michael
Born in Scotland County, NC on Aug. 6, 1914
Departed on Mar. 13, 2002 and resided in Gibson, NC.

Gibson - Mrs. Rosa Gibson Michael, 87, formerly of Gibson died Wednesday, March 13, at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Crest Cemetery officiated by the Revs. Rick Hodges and Harold Salmon.

She is survived by a son, David McGregor of Laurinburg; a brother, J. D. Gibson of Gibson; four sisters, Bessie Turnage of Hamlet, Lela Shinn of Spartanburg, SC, Marie Bell of Laurinburg, and Nell Robinson of Wilmington.

Born August 6, 1914 in Scotland County, She was a daughter of the late Will H. and Josie Liles Gibson and widow of the late David W. Michael. She was a member of the Gibson Baptist Church, the Scotland County Extension Homemakers, the Friendly Club, and the C. D. A. Women’s Auxiliary.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.

Julia McDade Thompson
Born in Richmond Co., NC on Feb. 23, 1921
Departed on Apr. 2, 2002 and resided in Maxton, NC.

Maxton, N.C. - Mrs. Julia Lenora McDade Thompson, 81, of 600 Bryants Cir., Maxton, died Tuesday April 2, 2002.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am. Saturday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel with the Rev. Nancy Willard officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Maxton.

She is survived by her husband John Henry Thompson, a son James David “Jimmy” Thompson of Laurinburg, three daughters, Deborah Dial and Linda Spencer both of Laurinburg and Rose Marie Woollen of Arlington, VA. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was born February 23, 1921 in Richmond County, NC a daughter of the late Charles and Hazel Dean Vick McDade. She was a homemaker.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. at McDougald Funeral and other times at the home of her daughter Linda’s home 2012 Lake Drive Laurinburg, NC.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium of Laurinburg is serving the family.

Mary Adams Daniels
Born in Richmond County, NC on Mar. 22, 1919
Departed on Apr. 3, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Mrs. Mary Adams Daniels, 82, of Scotia Village died Thursday, April 3, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Hillside Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Nancy Willard.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest Daniels of Virginia Beach, VA and Phil Daniels of Charlotte; two sisters, Gladys McMillan and Evelyn Adams of Laurinburg. And 3 grandchildren.

She was born March 22, 1919 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late James and Mattie Beard Adams and widow of the late Ernest Daniels. She was a homemaker.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the game room of Scotia Village.

Ishmael Worth Maddox

Laurinburg - Mr. Ishmael Worth Maddox, 87, of 16680 Andrew Jackson Highway died Thursday, March 21, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium chapel officiated by the Rev. Quinton Covington.

Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife; Doris Sanford Maddox; two daughters, Pat Culp and husband, John and Judy Lee and husband William of Charlotte; two sisters, Emma Neal Maddox and Annie Laurie Smith and husband, Tom of Laurinburg; two granddaughters, Dr. Laurie Culp and husband, Dr. Joseph Pate of Decatur, GA, Courtney Lee of Charlotte, and Heather Lee of Wilmington; one grandson, Chris Culp of Atlanta, GA.

Born June 6, 1914 in Scotland County he was a son of the late Walter T. and Cora Beasley Maddox. He was a US Army veteran of World War II where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. For over 50 years he was employed by Waverly Mills.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, PO Box 806, Laurinburg, NC 28353-0806.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Elizabeth Livingstone Read
Born in Red Springs, NC on Jun. 30, 1917
Departed on Mar. 28, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Elizabeth Livingstone “Lib” Read, 84, of 617 Azure Court Laurinburg, died Thursday, March 28, in Regency Hospital Florence, SC.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Lowry and the Rev. Nancy Willard officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Peggy Karneckis and Cathy Steed of Laurinburg and Martha McDonnell of Manassas, VA, a sister Rena Culp of Laurinburg, a granddaughter and three grandsons.

Born June 30, 1917 in Red Springs, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Rena Meacham Livingston. She was a homemaker, a volunteer for the American Red Cross and an avid gardener. She was preceded in death by her husband Willett W. “Bill” Read on Nov. 12, 1992.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Stained Glass Window Fund, 101 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Elizabeth Duncan Phipps
Born in Tabor City, NC on May. 1, 1912

Laurinburg, NC - Miss Elizabeth Duncan “Lizzie” Phipps, 89, of 617 Old Lumberton Road died Monday, April 22, at Willow Haven.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at East Laurinburg Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Richard Tyson. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

She is survived by a sister, Gladys Caison of Laurinburg and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Tabor City, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Nettie Duncan Phipps. She was retired from Waverly Mills and Dixiana Mills.

Lizzie was an active member of East Laurinburg Baptist Church for over 75 years.

John Ray Ellington, Jr.
Born in Oxford, NC on Mar. 31, 1917
Departed on May. 16, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Dr. John Ray Ellington, Jr. 85, of 229 West Blvd. died Thursday, May 16, at the Edwin Morgan Center after a short illness.

A private graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Larson Ellington; a son, Ret. Major Jim Ellington, US Army of Anchorage, Alaska, two daughters, Lynn Ellington of Washington, DC and Nancy Ellington of Statesville; a sister, Sarah Ellington of Oxford; and 3 nieces.

Dr. Ellington was born March 31, 1917 in Oxford, a son of the late John R. and Christian Chisholm Ellington and attended UNC-Chapel Hill. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving the entire war in the United States and overseas. He later graduated from Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis in 1949 and operated a practice in Laurinburg until his retirement in 1989.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Cameron Morrison Locklear

Laurinburg - Mr. Cameron Morrison “Cam” Locklear, 82, of Locklear Road died Thursday, May 23, at his home.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by a son, Cameron W. Locklear and wife, Pat of Chesterfield, SC; four daughters, Carolyn Walters of Laurinburg, Christine Locklear and husband, William of Laurinburg, Agnes Walters and husband, Horace of Raeford, and Maxine Allen and husband Charles of Cheraw, SC; a brother, Wade Locklear and wife, Flora of Maxton; a sister, Beulah Locklear of Laurinburg; four grandchildren, Keith Walters, Ashley Locklear, Cammie Locklear, and Penny Wilkerson; four great grandchildren, Megan Wilkerson, Logan Wilkerson, Davin Wilkerson, and Jordan Long. His wife, Georgia Ella Oxendine Locklear, whom he married icon on February 26, 1942, predeceased him.

Born May 1, 1920 in Scotland County, Cam was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in Australia. He was a retired farmer, a retired employee of LOF, and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
