Ocean Isle, NC - Mrs. Naomie Wallace White, 76, of 19083 Norwood Street, Ocean Isle and formerly of Hammond Drive in Laurinburg died Thursday, June 6, at her home.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Hillside Memorial Park.

Born April 21, 1926 in Chesterfield County, SC she was a daughter of the late William T. and Harriett Johnson Wallace. Her husband, James E. White, predeceased her in 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, James E. “Jimmy” White, Jr. and his wife, Angela of Ocean Isle, two sisters, Margaret Brown and Geneva “Jenny” Domm of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 725-A Wellington Ave., Wilmington, NC 28401 or Northview Harvest Ministries Building Fund, PO Box 1363, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Viola Collins
Born in Scotland County, NC on Nov. 24, 1908
Departed on Jul. 18, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Viola “Granny” Collins, 93 of Britthaven Nursing Center, Hamlet, formerly of N. Caledonia Rd., died Thursday July 18, 2002.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002 at the East Laurinburg Church of God, Rev. Jeff McGirt will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Born November 24, 1908 in Scotland County, NC. She was an active member of the E. Laurinburg Church of God since 1944 and took a special interest in the church’s fundraising efforts. She was retired from Springs Mills finishing Department.

She is survived by a son, Guilford Clark of Laurinburg and 2 grandchildren.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Stanley Edison Bartell

Stanley Edison “Stan” Bartell

Laurel Hill - Stanley Edison “Stan” Bartell, 68, of 17961 Fieldcrest Road died suddenly Friday, July 27, near Sumter, SC while fishing.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Higher Dimensions Ministries officiated by the Revs. Tom Skipper and Dennie Meetze.

Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by His wife, Jeanette Thompson Bartell; a son, Eddie Bartell of Laurinburg; a daughter, Myra Goins of Laurel Hill; two brothers, Same bartell of Laurinburg and Don Bartell of Laurel Hill; three sisters, Mildred Stanton of Gibson, Sylvia Baldwin of Laurel Hill, and Linda Heiser of Woodland, CA; five grandchildren.

Born June 24, 1934 in Marlboro County, SC, he was a son of the late Samuel and Elsie Cribb Bartell. He served with the US Air Force and later worked with Fieldcrest. For many years after leaving Fieldcrest he operated his own remodeling and construction company.

Memorials may be made to Higher Dimensions Ministries, PO Box 926, Laurel Hill, NC 28351.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Sunday at the McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill.

James Walter Mason, Jr.
Born in Laurinburg, NC on Feb. 8, 1916
Departed on Dec. 2, 2002 and resided in Southern Pines, NC.

James Walter Mason, Jr., 86, died Monday, December 2, at his home in Southern Pines.

The memorial service will be 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Laurinburg with the Rev. Dr. L. D. Kimrey and the Rev. Julius H. Corpening officiating. Visitation is from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Tuesday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Born on February 8, 1916, in Laurinburg, North Carolina, he was the son of James Walter and Marie Cornelius Mason. Mr. Mason graduated from Gibson High School in 1933 and Wake Forest Law School in 1938 and was awarded a Doctor of Law degree by Wake Forest University in 1996. He began his practice of law as a sole practitioner in Laurinburg. In 1942 he interrupted his law practice to serve as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in California and resumed his law practice in 1946. He served in the North Carolina Senate in 1957 and 1958 and on the North Carolina State Highway Commission from 1958 to 1961. In 1993, Mr. Mason was inducted into the North Carolina Bar Association’s General Practice Hall of Fame. He retired from the practice of law in 1998.

Mr. Mason served six terms on the Wake Forest University Board of Trustees, serving as its Chairman in 1978. He was later named a Life Trustee. During his years of service, Wake Forest awarded him the Distinguished Service Citation-Law, 1965; the Outstanding Alumni Award, 1967; the Medallion of Merit, 1980; the Carroll Wayland Weathers Distinguished Alumnus Award, 1983.

Locally, he served as city attorney of Laurinburg and several neighboring communities. Mr. Mason was instrumental in starting and served as legal counsel for the local airport commission and for the Laurinburg Housing Authority. He was a trustee of Scotland County Memorial Hospital for more than a quarter century. When he was on the State Highway Commission he was instrumental in establishing the 74 Bypass around Laurinburg . Mr. Mason served for many years as a member and chairman of the board of Scotland Savings Bank and also of the local board of Wachovia Bank.

He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Laurinburg, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for more than 40 years. He was also a member of the General Board of the State Baptist Convention.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Adams Mason, and granddaughter, Ann Marie Mason. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy McAllister Mason of Southern Pines; a son, James W. Mason, III, and daughter-in-law, Lynn Moberg Mason of Laurinburg; a daughter, Celeste Mason Pittman and son-in-law, William Bryan Pittman of Rocky Mount; grandchildren Nell Pittman Sutlive of Atlanta, GA, William Bryan Pittman, Jr. of Winston-Salem, and Hannah Lynn Mason of Laurinburg; his stepson, David A. McAllister of Southern Pines; his stepdaughter, Ann Elizabeth Heintz and husband, C. Glenn Heintz of Lumberton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the James and Marie Mason Scholarship, Wake Forest University, Post Office Box 7354, Reynolda Station, Winston-Salem, NC, 27109, or to First Baptist Church, Post Office Box 883, Laurinburg, NC, 28353 or The Honorable James W. Mason scholarship Fund, c/o Foundation of the Carolinas, 217 S. Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28202. This fund will provide scholarships for students from Scotland High School.

Henry David Smith, Jr.
Born in Laurinburg, NC on Oct. 30, 1932
Departed on Nov. 3, 2002 and resided in Kure Beach, NC.

Kure Beach, NC - Mr. Henry David Smith, Jr., 70, of 118 Settlers Lane died Sunday, November 3.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hillside Memorial Park, Laurinburg officiated by the Revs. Tom Groome and Keith Grogg.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Carter Smith; a son, David Smith and wife, Sandra of Cary; a daughter, Kimberly Smith-Bufton and husband, David William of Atlanta; a brother, Adrian Smith of Laurinburg.

Born August 30, 1932 in Laurinburg he was a son of the late Henry David and Clara Lawing Smith. He was formerly of Raeford where he was retired manager of Burlington Industries (42 years), a member of the Raeford Presbyterian Church and a member of the Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church serving both churches as an elder. He was a former President of the Raeford-Hoke County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Hoke County Lions Club, and a member of the Hoke High School Athletic and Band Booster Clubs. He was also a former member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.

Howard David Morgan

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Howard David “Grandy” Morgan, 62, of 12460 Richardson Road died Monday, November 11, at his residence.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Revs. Jim Dickerson and Marshall Norris.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna Caulder Morgan; three sons, Howard “Bo” Morgan, Mickey Morgan and wife, Michelle of Laurinburg; and Chris Morgan and wife, Holly of Colchester, CT; a brother, Don Morgan of Laurel Hill; two sisters, Betty Brigman of Hamlet and Dorothy Brummert of Fort Myers, FL; four granddaughters; Cecily Morgan and Hailey Morgan of Laurinburg, MacKenzie Morgan and Taylor Morgan of Colchester, CT; and a special relative, Tammy Milligan of Laurinburg.

Born June 25, 1940 in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late David and Ruth Langley Morgan. He was a maintenance mechanic for LOF Glass for 27 years until his retirement in October 1998. An active member of the Laurel Hill Church of God of Prophecy, he served as a Sunday school superintendent, on the finance committee, as an usher, and several other positions. He will be remembered as a great husband and loving father and grandfather.

Wilson Arthur Hasty

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Wilson A. Hasty, Sr., 96, died Saturday, November 2, at Scotia Village.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm Monday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Jerry Lowry.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Douglas Poe Hasty; a son, Wilson A. Hasty, Jr. and wife Jean of Conover, NC; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Ward Davis of Edisto Isle, SC; a stepson, Henry Davis Ward of Dunwoody, GA; a sister, Mable Stanley of Laurinburg; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Born October 7, 1906 in Richmond County he was the son of the late Shockly Victor and Mamie Ila Hancock Hasty. He was retired from J.P. Stevens as a Personnel Administrator and was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was active in the Betsy Sanford Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Men. Mr. Hasty was also very active in the Laurinburg Rotary Club and was a Mason and a Shriner.

Ralph Julius Tart
Born in Johnston County, NC on Oct. 1, 1928
Departed on Oct. 25, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Ralph Julius Tart, 73, died Friday October 25, 2002 at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at North Laurinburg Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Rick Koch and Rev. Frank Ingram. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

Born December 1, 1928 in Johnston County, he was a US Air Force Veteran and retired from Fieldcrest Mills.

He is survived by his wife Adella Adcox-Tart; a son, Rocky Tart of Rockingham; a stepson, James Borton of Laurinburg; a stepdaughter, Donna Harrell of Charlotte; two brothers, Bruce Tart of Raleigh and John Tart of Houma, WA.

Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

John Harrison Muse
Born in Laurinburg, NC on Oct. 17, 1913
Departed on Sep. 17, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - John Harrison Muse, 87, of 726 Richmond St. died Tuesday, September 17, at his residence.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Jerry Lowry. Burial will follow in Beaver Dam Cemetery in McColl.

He is survived by a daughter, Jennalee Anderson and husband, David of Willston, SC.

Born October 3, 1913 in Laurinburg, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Jenny Kelly Muse and widower of the late Anne Bundy Muse. Charlie was the assistant secretary-treasurer of McNair Investment Company and John F. McNair, Inc. for almost 50 years, retiring in 1984. He was also a Mason and Shriner.

A member of the First United Methodist Church, Harrison was a former church treasurer and choir member.

Memorials are requested for the First United Methodist Church, 101 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or the Burn Center of Shriners Childrens Hospital, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095.

Gladys Taylor High
Born in Columbus County, NC on Sep. 15, 1913
Departed on Sep. 15, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Mrs. Gladys Taylor High, 89, of Peden Street died Sunday, September 15, at the Edwin Morgan Center.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at the East Laurinburg Church of God officiated by the Revs. Jeff McGirt and Dan Carter.

Burial will follow in Rogers Cemetery in McColl.

She is survived by her husband, H. F. High of Laurinburg; three sons, Vernie C. Taylor of Newport News, VA, Grady Taylor of Dillon, SC, and Mitchell Taylor of Maxton; three daughters, Joyce Brock of Laurinburg, Dorothy Taylor and Lois Dean Smith of Hamlet; 38 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by a stepson, and three step-daughters.

She was born September 15, 1913 in Columbus County, a daughter of the late Huey and Zettie Butler Godwin. She was also the widow of the late Roy Taylor and was predeceased by a son, H. L. Taylor.

Gladys was a retired employee of Waverly Mills and was a very active member of the East Laurinburg Church of God as long as her health permitted. She was well known for her cakes that she sold for church functions.
