Wagram, NC - Mrs. Frances Spivey Holt, 77, of 25521 Hill Creek Road, Wagram died Tuesday October 1, 2002 in Manor Care Nursing Center Pinehurst.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Wagram with the Revs. Van Ingram and L.D. Kimrey officiating. Graveside Services will be conducted 2:00 pm. Friday at Biscoe Cemetery, Rev. Larry Wilson will officiate.

She is survived by her son, Larry Joseph Holt of Hamlet; daughters, Barbara Holt Bruton of Troy and Janie Holt McCaskill of Laurinburg; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Also surviving is her brother Clinton Spivey of Asheboro and sisters Pauline Deaton of Asheboro, Rachel Spivey of Troy, and Dorothy Morris of Whiteville.

Born June 14, 1925 in Norman, NC, a daughter of the late Emmit Frank and Lela Henley Spivey. She began working with Springs Mills in Biscoe in 1958, after moving to Wagram she worked with J.P. Stevens until retirement in 1989. She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Biscoe and an active member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Holt in 2001 and a sister, Virginia S. Criscoe in 1994.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium and other times at the home of her daughter 1209 Woodburn Road, Laurinburg.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, 3420 Shamrock Road, Charlotte, NC 28215.

Margaret Covington Joyce
Born in Lee County, NC on Jul. 6, 1936
Departed on Sep. 20, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Mrs. Margaret Covington Joyce, 66, of 14481 Haney Drive died Friday, September 20, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. L. D. Kimrey and Eric Joyce. Burial will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery in Ellerbe.

She is survived her husband, Harlan Joyce; a son, the Rev. eric Joyce of Southern Pines; a daughter, Pamela Warrick of Raleigh; two brothers, Wilson Covington of Denver, NC and Carl Covington of Kernersville; five grandchildren.

Born July 6, 1936 in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Aubrey and Anna Wilson Covington. She was a former Social Studies teacher at Scotland High School, retiring in 1986 after 28 years of teaching. She was also a member of the Laurinburg Lions Club.

Nellie Inman Pearson
Born in Robeson County, NC on Dec. 15, 1924
Departed on Aug. 29, 2002 and resided in Bennettsville, SC.

Bennettsville, SC - Mrs. Nellie Inman Pearson, 77, of 835 Hwy. 9 East, Bennettsville, SC, formerly of Gibson, died Thursday August 29, at the her home.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Crest Cemetery in Gibson officiated by Rev. Harold Salmon and Rev. Drag Kimrey.

Born December 15, 1924 in Robeson County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Orion and Elizabeth Howell Martin. She was a retired secretary for Scotland Wood, Inc. She served as Treasurer and Music Director for Gibson United Methodist Church for several years and was the President of Gibson Friendly Club for twenty years. She was also a member of First Baptist Church in Laurinburg and a former member of the Gibson Town Board.

She is survived by her sons, Gerald M. Inman of Bennettsville and Kenneth Pearson of Tucson, AZ; a daughter, Linda Hinshaw of Pleasant Garden, NC; half brothers, Wesley Martin of Lynchburg, VA., Tracy Martin of Concord, VA., sisters, Myrtle M. Pearson of Gibson, Dorothy Seals of Charlotte; half sisters, Mabel Thompkins, Lucy Cartwright and Ann Martin all of Fayetteville and Jane Saunders of Raeford. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 7 - 8:30 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium, Laurinburg.

Susia Anna Yarbrough Wolfe
Born in New York on Aug. 3, 1927
Departed on Sep. 11, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Mrs. Susia Anna Yarborough Wolf, 75, of 12500 Laurelcrest Road died Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at her residence.

A service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran church of the Living Word officiated by Pastor Erich Spieker.

She was much loved and will be greatly missed by her surviving family and a host friends. She is survived by two daughters, Tara G. Wolfe of Monrovia, CA. and Stacie C. Wolfe of Oakland, CA.; a son Phillip A. Wolfe of Pocatello, ID.; and 5 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Wolfe.

Born August 3, 1927 in New York, she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. and Maggie K. Yarborough. She was a retired Parole Agent with the California Youth Authority, a Volunteer with Sandhills Mediation Center, California Peace Officer Organization, North Carolina Criminal Justice Association and a member of the Toastmasters Club.

Born in Union County, NC on Mar. 9, 1921

Gibson, NC - Mr. Fred Rushing, 81, of Britthaven Nursing Center, Hamlet formerly of Mason’s Crossroads, Gibson, died Sunday September 8, in Sandhills Regional Hospital, Hamlet, after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Revs. Joel Perry and Dan Carter. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.

Born March 9, 1921 in Union County, NC he was a son of the late William and Gillie Mills Rushing. He was also a US Army Veteran and a retired farmer and was preceded by his wife, Ruth Rushing in 1994.

He is survived by his son Joe Rushing and wife, Sherry of Gibson; daughter Jane Teal and husband, Johnny of Gibson; grandchildren, Sommer Lynn Rushing, James Michael Rushing and Jason Bryan Teal all of Gibson. Also surviving are his brothers, Conway Rushing of Laurinburg and J.B. Rushing of Charlotte; sisters, Desdnie R. Willis of Wagram, Annie Lee Brigman of Darlington, SC., and Mildred R. Fletcher of Louisville, KY.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium, Laurinburg.

Patricia Rollins Mishoe
Born in Rutherfordton, NC on Mar. 10, 1947
Departed on Aug. 16, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Patricia Rollins Mishoe, 55 of 12421 Huntington Drive died Friday, August 16, at her home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by Mitch Mishoe.

She is survived by her husband, Roger Mishoe, a son, Thad Hamrick of Norfolk, VA; a daughter, Tonnya Campagna of Wilmington; her mother, Modine Hamrick of Rutherfordton; a sister LaRee Carver of Tom’s River, NJ; two step-sons, Roger “Bear” Mishoe and Jason Mishoe of Milton, FL; two step-daughters, Heather Smith and Cindy Mishoe of Milton, FA; seven grandchildren.

She was born March 10, 1947 in Rutherfordton and was also a daughter of the late Charlie Rollins. She was a homemaker.

William Jesse Evans, Sr.
Born in Surry County, NC on Jan. 10, 1934
Departed on Aug. 10, 2002 and resided in Laurel Hill, NC.

Laurel Hill - William Jesse Evans, Jr., 68, of 7341 Andrew Jackson Highway died Saturday, August 10. at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Peele’s Chapel Wesleyan Church officiated by the Rev. J. W. Williams. Burial will follow in Wright’s Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Whitt Evans; a son, William Jesse Evans, Jr. of Laurel Hill; a daughter, betty E. Dodd of Dunn; a brother, Odell Evans of Louisiana, two sisters Beulah Doss of Dobson and Ruth Walters of Laurinburg; three grandchildren, Niki Hammonds, Chris Hogan, and Jessica Evans; and three great grandchildren.

Born January 10, 1934 in Surry County, he was a son of the late James Thomas and Maggie Hill Evans. He was a farmer.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill.

Maggie Lewis Carter

Departed on Aug. 8, 2002 and resided in Laurel Hill, NC.

Laurel Hill - Mrs. Maggie Lewis Carter, 91, formerly of Laurel Hill, died Tuesday, August 6, at Edwin Morgan Center.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Friday at Springfield Church of God officiated by the Rev. Richard Tyson. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

She is survived by her sons, Harold Lewis and wife, Barbara of Bennettsville, SC., David Lewis of Laurel Hill, Dwight Lewis and wife, Melanie of New Bern, NC., Roger Lewis and wife, Anita of Laurel Hill; her daughters, Joyce Rising and husband, George of Rockingham, Barbara Sanders and husband, Watson of Ocean Isle Beach, Shirley Garrett and husband, Jim of Ft. Payne, AL, Linda Bowyer and husband, Charles of Laurel Hill; two brothers, Leon Ward of Whiteville and Howard Ward of Fayetteville; one sister, Hazel Johnston of Chadbourn; 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Born August 26 1910 in Columbus County, she was a daughter of the late Frazier and Hattridge Rebecca Ward. She was retired from Morgan Mills and a member of Springfield Church of God.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 8, 7-9 pm at McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill.

James Ervin Norton
Born in Richmond County, NC on Feb. 28, 1955
Departed on Aug. 4, 2002 and resided in Laurel Hill, NC.

Laurel Hill - Mr. James Ervin Norton, 47, of 21092 Country Mile Road died Sunday, August 4, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at the East Laurinburg Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Richard Tyson.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary Carter Norton; three sons, James Ervin Norton, Jr. of Hemmingway, SC, Buckie Norton and fiancée, Crystal Brevard of Concord, and Clarence Michael Norton and girlfriend, Susan Overcash of Laurel Hill; a daughter, Bettie Jean Fleming and husband, Allen of Bennettsville; his parents, Ervin and Eddie Jean Norton of Laurel Hill; two brothers, Okcuse Norton of Laurel Hill and Gary Norton of King; a sister, Sandra Norton Pate of Laurel Hill; two grandchildren, Joshua Allen Fleming and Ryan Louis Fleming.

Born February 28, 1955 in Richmond County, he was a devoted family man, an avid fisherman, and enjoyed hunting while his health allowed. He formerly owned his own construction company and was a heavy equipment operator while he lived in Georgetown, SC. He worked for 15 years at the Annadale Plantation. He was also a former heavy equipment operator for Southern Products and Silica.

Laurinburg - Mrs. Rosemary Dawson Davis, 73, of 12560 Turnpike Rd. died Thursday, August 1, at her home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hillside Memorial Park officiated by the Rev. Jerry Lowry.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Joe Davis of Carbondale, IL; a daughter, Toni Johnson of Marietta, GA; a brother, Walter L. Dawson, Jr. of Summerville, SC; a sister, Betty D. Sylvester of Beaumont, TX.

Born November 29, 1928 in Grifton, NC she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ruth Clegg Davis and widow of the late Dr. Arthur Davis. She was formerly a legal secretary for James Mason and a bookkeeper for her late husband, but most of her life she was a homemaker.

Memorials may be made to the Scotland County Humane Society, 1401 West Blvd., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Russell Earl Hay, Jr.
Born in Dayton, OH on Jan. 6, 1918
Departed on Jul. 8, 2002 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Russell Earl Hay, Jr., 84, of Scotia Village died Monday, July 8, at Scotia Village Retirement Center.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Morris Morgan Entertainment Center at Scotia Village officiated by the Revs. Tom Groome and Tom Dendy.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Aull Hay of Scotia Village, daughters, Nancy Cadwallender of Sanford, FL., Susan Ryan of Albany, NY. And Katherine Hay of New Bern, NC. Also surviving are two grandchildren.

Born January 6, 1918 in Dayton, OH He was a son of the late Russell Earl and Harriett Lillis Hay.

He received his BS degree from Miami of Ohio, his Masters at the University of Nebraska, and his PhD from the University of Illinois and was a plant Physiologist. He was also a member of Phi Kappa Tau Honors Fraternity.

Russell was a US Army veteran of WWII serving with the Corps of Engineers at Okinawa and later retiring from the Army Reserve. He was a member of the American Legion, Retired Officers Association, American Society of Plant Biologists, and the American Chemical Society.

He was also an assistant director of research administration at Ohio State University and retired director of Research Development at Wright State University.

He was a formerly a resident of Carthage, NC.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 13000 Blue’s Farm Rd., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

The family will receive friends following the service.
