Laurinburg - Mrs. Geneva Creech Stancil, 84, of Scotia Village and formerly of West Blvd. Died Saturday, June 8, at Scotia Village.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Mack Thompson.
A visitation/service will be 3 p.m. at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson. Burial will be 4 p.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Benson.
She is survived by two sons, R. Wayne Stancil and wife, Maggie of North Myrtle Beach and B. Dale Stancil of Winston-Salem; a brother, Bobby Creech of Smithfield; a sister, Georgia Way of Benson; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
She was born June 27, 1917 in Johnston County and was a daughter of the late Robert and Mary Barbour Creech and widow of the late O. V. Stancil. She was the retired owner and operator of Stancil’s Gift Shop in Laurinburg.
Geneva was also and active member of the First Baptist Church where she was in the UFO’s and also served in the Young at Heart Club and was a member of the Eastern Star.

Richard R. Harding

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Richard R. “Dick” Harding, 77 of 1203 Franklin Ave. died Thursday, July 4, at his home.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church of the Living Word officiated by Pastor Erich Spieker. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret F. Harding; two sons, Richard R. Harding, Jr. of Atlanta and Thomas R. Harding of Charlotte; two daughters, Judy McMillan of Laurinburg and Jeanne Marie Harding of Charlotte; a brother, Kenneth Harding of Warsaw, IN; three sisters, Shirley Helmke of Columbia City, IN, Gloria Brown of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Pat Ivins of Enterprise, AL; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Born July 4, 1925 in Ft. Wayne, he was a son of the late Ray T. and Anna Bobay Harding. He served in the US Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and also served in the Korean Conflict. He retired as personnel manager for REA Magnet Wire. Following his retirement was a realtor for Graham and Grubbs Realty for over 14 years.
He was member of the Laurinburg Optimist Club and coached Little League baseball in Lafayette, IN and Optimist League baseball in Laurinburg.

Henrietta Henderson Smith

Henrietta Henderson Smith of Riverton, NC and formerly of Lancaster, SC, died November 22, 2002 at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg, NC.
Born on July 26, 1915 in Mecklenburg County, she was 87 years old. She was the daughter of Julia Dowd Henderson and Pickney Caldwell Henderson, both of Mecklenburg County.
Henrietta graduated from Charlotte’s Central High School and Queens College in 1937. In 1939, she married
Marion Hinson Smith of Riverton. After teaching at the old Sharon School, she became an extraordinary homemaker and mother.
Having been raised in the Second Presbyterian Church, she and Hinson were charter members of both Covenant Presbyterian Church and Myers Park Baptist Church, all of Charlotte. Later she and her family were active members of First Baptist Church in Lancaster, SC and upon Hinson’s retirement, returned to Spring Hill Baptist Church in Wagram where his family were founders.
Proceeding Henrietta in death were her parents, her husband and her four siblings: brother, Pickney Caldwell Henderson, and sisters, Lenora Henderson, Elizabeth (Lib) Henderson Thompson, and Julia Henderson Van de Erve.
Surviving Henrietta are two sons: Marion Hinson Smith, Jr. (Chip) and wife Kathy of Charlotte, and James Dowd Smith (Jim) and wife Peggy of Riverton. Other survivors are her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly: Marion Hinson Smith III (Rion) and wife Lolly of Greenville, SC; Jami Leigh Smith of Charlotte, and Cashion Dowd Smith of Boulder, CO.
A graveside service will be held at the family cemetery in Riverton on Monday the twenty-fifth of November at two o’clock. In addition, a memorial service celebrating Henrietta’s life will take place at Scotia Village in Laurinburg on Monday evening at seven o’clock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Sharing and Caring Fund, Scotia Village, 2200 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or to Spring Hill Baptist Church, PO Box 195, Wagram, NC 28396.
The family wishes to acknowledge the doctors, nurses and staff at the Scotland Memorial Hospital for their care and especially the staff and residents of Scotia Village for their love, support and friendship over the last ten years.
“Mimi” was well known for her incredible cooking, tireless church work, love of animals, especially her loyal companion of the last fourteen years, “Tippy” and for her pride in and devotion to her grandchildren.
Phoebe Richardson Fitzner

Wilmington - Mrs. Phoebe Richardson Fitzner, 53, of Wilmington and formerly of Laurinburg died Monday, November 18.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. L. D. Kimrey. A graveside service will be at a later date in Jacksonville, FL.
She is survived by her son, Chase Fitzner of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Phoebe Bye and husband, Philip of Clayton; her mother, Penny Richardson of Laurinburg; a brother, Dr. David Richardson and wife, Sylvia of Lumberton; and several nieces and nephews.
Born July 24, 1949 in Charlotte, she graduated from Laurinburg High School and Mount Vernon Junior College in Washington, DC. She was employed as a travel agent in Wilmington and formerly in Laurinburg.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. James Richardson of Jacksonville, FL and a brother, Jim Richardson of Jacksonville, FL.
The family will be receiving friends at her mother’s home, 814 Gilchrist St.

Velna Mullis Peele Brock

Laurinburg - Mrs. Velna Mullis Peele Brock, 84, of 301 McLaurin Ave. died Sunday, November 17, at her residence.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Jim Bumgardner. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Peele of Seattle, WA; two daughters, Jane Callahan and husband, Frank of Laurinburg and Doris P. Milligan of Laurinburg; eight grandchildren, Keith Pickels, Tracy Sheppard, Samantha Sheppard, Kirt Callahan, Andy Callahan, John Callahan and wife, LeAnn, Casey Peele, and Carly Peele.
Born July 1, 1918 in Union County, she was a daughter of the late O. C. and Margaret Helms Mullis. She was a retired bedspread inspector at Heritage Weavers.
Mrs. Brock joined Laurinburg Presbyterian Church and was baptized on March 29, 1942, and later joined Middleton Heights Presbyterian Church on November 3, 1958. She became a member of Faith Presbyterian Church when it was formed from Middleton Heights in 1987. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Women and was a cook for their annual ingatherings. She is remembered as a wonderful mother, cook, and she enjoyed gardening.

Richard Franklin Williams

Ocean Isle Beach - Mr. Richard Franklin Williams, 70, of Ocean Isle Beach, formerly of Laurinburg, died Wednesday, January 30, at Sea Coast Medical Center in Little River, SC.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church officiated by Revs. Jerry Lowry, Nancy Willard and Robert Redmond.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Davidson Williams; his mother, Muriel Jones Evans of Laurinburg; three daughters, Terry Craven and husband Rock of Martinsville, IN, Mary Gib Conley and husband, Wyndon of Laurinburg and Susan Barnes and husband, Brett of Wilmington, NC; one step-daughter, Carmi Farrell and husband, Rob of Charlotte, NC; one step-son, Alex Debnam Florida; one brother, Dr. David Williams of Laurinburg; one sister, Barbara Evans of Goldsboro; nine grandchildren, Josh Craven, Shuler Craven, Jordan Conley, Gunnar Conley, Russ Conley, Alan Barnes, Charlie Barnes, Hannah Farrell, Austin Farrell.
He was born April 4, 1932 in Burlington, NC and was a son of the late David A. Williams and lived in Johns, NC while growing up. He attended Laurinburg High School, Oak Ridge Academy and UNC-CH. Richard served in the US Army after which he along with Bill Evans formed and operated the Bill Evans Company, which he ran until 1994 when he retired to Ocean Isle Beach.

Walter (Ben) Ammons

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Walter “Ben” Ammons, 76, of 11844 Johns Road died Sunday, February 2, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Revs. Mike Coble and L. J. Young. Burial will follow in Scotland Cemetery.
Born May 17, 1926 in Dillon County, SC a son of the late Menyon and Cely Ann Caulder Ammons. He was employed as a loom fixer in textiles, retiring in 1991 with West Point/Stevens after 47 years. He enjoyed gardening, farming and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Amelia Outlaw Ammons; two sons, Ben Ammons and wife, Eleanor of Laurinburg and Ronnie Ammons and wife, Jadwiga of Virginia Beach; three daughters, Carolyn Dees and husband, Charles of Hamlet, Joyce Ammons Grimsley and husband, Harold of Laurinburg, and Wanda Villaponteaux and husband, Jack of Moncks Corner, SC; two brothers, Henry Ammons of Laurel Hill and Jessie Ammons of Dillon, SC; a sister, Marian Caulder of Columbia, SC; 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Born April 5, 1972 in Jalisco, Mexico, Abel was an employee of Carmichael Farms.
He is survived by his parents, David Morales Caro and Elvira Avalos Ramirez; three brothers, David Avalos, Victor Avalos, and Luis Avalos; a sister, Juana Lus Avalos.
Henrietta Thompson Wilkinson

Black Mountain - The Rev. Henrietta Thompson Wilkinson, 84, died Sunday, March 30, at her residence.
A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Hillside Cemetery; Laurinburg officiated by the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.
She is survived by two sons, John Wilkinson of Orland, ME and Daniel Wilkinson of New Haven, CT; two daughters, Dr. Betty Wilkinson of Fairhope, AL and Nancy Kropacek of St. Augustine, FA; three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. D. Douglas Wilkinson.
She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. At age 62 she attended Columbia Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1984. She served churches in Decatur, GA, Mobile, AL, and Black Mountain. She also received awards from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and the Association of Presbyterian Educators for her work.
