Emmett Eston Baker, Jr., 70, of12260 Hasty Road died Wednesday, March 19, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Rev. Dr. Tom Dendy. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Crews Baker; a brother, Jack Baker and wife, Margaret of Laurinburg; a niece, Ruth Lytch and husband, Keith of Laurinburg; a great niece, Maggie Lytch of Laurinburg.

Born December 24, 1922 in Laurinburg, he was a son of the late Emmett E. and Ruth Cowan Baker. Emmett was a baseball and football player at Laurinburg High School and played on the high school’s state championship football team. He received a football scholarship and attended Wake Forest College. He was also in the US Army combat infantry in World War II, serving in Europe. Emmett was a plumbing and heating contactor.

Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium

Marion Monroe, Jr.
Born in Laurinburg, NC on Mar. 13, 2003
Departed on Mar. 24, 2003 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Marston - Mr. Marion “Buck” Monroe, Jr. 47, of 25866 Hoffman Road, Marston died Monday at his home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at McNeill Cemetery, Sneads Town Road with the Rev. Howard Whitehurst officiating.

He is survived by his son Jesse Monroe of Rock Hill, his daughter Amanda Lynn Monroe Bailey and husband Mike of Rock Hill, sisters; Jo Monroe Sisk of Whiteville, Marty Monroe Pate and husband Mike of Marston and Becky Monroe Smith and husband Lucky of Whiteville. Also surviving is his granddaughter Victoria Lynn Bailey, a niece Maggie Pate and a nephew Joseph Pate.

Born March 13, 1956 in Scotland County a son of the late Marion and Frances Monroe. He was formerly an electrician with Perdue Inc. and a member of Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his niece, Michelle Pate.

Buck will be remembered for being a fun loving person who enjoyed racing, the outdoors and most of all his family and friends.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday evening at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church, 15301 McFarland Road, Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Thelma Britt Carter
Born in Lumberton, NC on Jun. 29, 1906

Laurinburg - Mrs. Thelma Britt Carter, 96, died Thursday, April 3, at Britthaven of Hamlet.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hillside Memorial Park officiated by the Rev. L. D. Kimrey.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth Smith of Lumberton.

She was a retired employee of Waverly Mills, a member of the First Baptist Church, and widow of the late Horace Carter.

Culbreth (Dock) Jernigan
Born in Robeson County, NC on Jun. 7, 1922
Departed on Apr. 4, 2003 and resided in Gibson, NC.

Gibson - Mr. Culbreth “Dock” Jernigan, 80, of 13941 Old Stage Road, Gibson died Friday, April 4, at Autumn Care of Raeford.

Funeral Services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Springfield Church of God officiated by the Rev. Dan Carter. Burial will follow in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Gibson.

He is survived by his wife Irene Jernigan of the home; six sons, Jimmy Jernigan and Reffie Jernigan of Laurinburg, Dewayne Jernigan, Culbreth Jernigan, Jr., and Gilbert L. Jernigan all of Gibson; and Noah M. Jernigan of Laurel Hill; two daughters; Vickie Corcia of Laurel Hill and Kathy Caulder of Gibson; two brothers; O. J. Jernigan and Newman Jernigan of Gibson; three sisters; Eunice Swett, Clara Mae Nitti, and Anna Lois Ellis all of Indiana; 24 grandchildren and 50 great grandchildren.

Born June 7, 1922 in Robeson County, he was a son of the late Emmett and Carrie Lockey Jernigan. Dock was a self-employed boat mechanic and a member of the Springfield Church of God.

Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Springfield Church of God.

John Benjamin (Ben) Gibson
Born in Laurel Hill, NC on Sep. 3, 1925
Departed on Apr. 6, 2003 and resided in Charlotte, NC.

Charlotte - Mr. John Benjamin “Ben” Gibson, 77, passed into his new home in heaven on Saturday, April 5. He was born September 3, 1925 in Laurel Hill to the late Elmore and Eva G. Gibson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Elmore and Joseph McKenzie.

Ben graduated from Laurel Hill High School in 1943. He was a veteran of WWII, completing his tour of duty as a Petty Officer Boatswain 2nd Class with the US Navy. Upon returning from duty, Ben entered South Georgia Trade and Vocational School, Americus, GA from where he graduated in 1949.

Ben moved to Charlotte in March 1951 and began working for the Charlotte Transit System. He was a devoted and highly valued employee until his retirement as group leader, first shift, in 1987.

A member of Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, Ben maintained the church ball field for 25 years as a gift to God.

Ben is survived by his wife of 49 ˝ years, Mary Ruth Caldwell Gibson; a son, Samuel E. Gibson of Laurel Hill; a daughter, Mary Eva Gibson and her husband, Douglas R. DeRose and granddaughter, Bailey Gibson DeRose of Charlotte.

A graveside service to honor Ben will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hillside Cemetery in Laurinburg officiated by the Rev. Terry Hanna of Sharon Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Tom Groome of Scotia Village.

Pallbearers will be Andy Beamon, Andy Phillips, Jody Sullivan, Wayne Gibson, Derrell Gibson, and Jack Matthews.

A reception to celebrate Ben’s life will be held following the service at the Scotia Village patio, Laurinburg.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Charlotte, 1240 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204; Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210 for upkeep of the ball field; or Scotia Village, 2200 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Ben was one of the last of a rare breed of gentlemen. He was never too busy that he couldn’t stop what he was doing to help someone in need, whether he knew them or not, and he always loved to visit with others, especially over a fast and furious game of pinochle. His faith in the Lord was evident in all he did and helped him stay strong and upbeat until the end. He will truly be missed and eternally loved by his family and friends.

Henrietta Thompson Wilkinson
Born in Atlanta, GA on Nov. 18, 1918
Departed on Mar. 30, 2003 and resided in Black Mountain, NC.

Black Mountain - The Rev. Henrietta Thompson Wilkinson, 84, died Sunday, March 30, at her residence.

A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Hillside Cemetery; Laurinburg officiated by the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.

She is survived by two sons, John Wilkinson of Orland, ME and Daniel Wilkinson of New Haven, CT; two daughters, Dr. Betty Wilkinson of Fairhope, AL and Nancy Kropacek of St. Augustine, FA; three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. D. Douglas Wilkinson.

She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. At age 62 she attended Columbia Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1984. She served churches in Decatur, GA, Mobile, AL, and Black Mountain. She also received awards from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and the Association of Presbyterian Educators for her work.

Sarah Fairley McIntyre Thompson
Born in Johns, NC on May. 5, 1931
Departed on Mar. 20, 2003 and resided in Maxton, NC.

Maxton - Mrs. Sarah Fairley McIntyre Thompson, 71, died Tuesday, March 18, in Virginia Beach, VA.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Faith Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Jim Bumgardner. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

She is survived by two daughters, Gail Delaney of Jacksonville, AR and Debbie Brockett of Virginia Beach; a son, Steven Thompson of Rogers, AR; two sisters, Jean Smith of Hamer, SC and Carol Gentry of Durham; seven grandchildren.

Born May 5, 1931 in John, she was a daughter of the late James Ferguson and Myrtle McKenzie McIntyre and widow of the late Maj. Billy Ray Thompson.

Memorials may be made to Faith Presbyterian Church, 2220 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or the American Cancer Society, 620 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, NC 27603-1830.

Mary Anna Scott

Mrs. Mary Anna Scott, 85, of 21741 McLaughlin Road died Friday, March 14, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Wagram Emmanuel Holiness Church officiated by teh Revs. Luther Powell, Glenn Odum, and Wayman Hill. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

She is survived by her sons; John Allen Locklear of Red Springs, William Stacy Locklear of Maxton, Roy Scott, Jr. of McColl, SC, James Robert Scott of Laurinburg, Frank Scott of Laurinburg, and Ennis Scott of Cheraw, SC; her daughters, Mary Anne Goins of McColl, SC, Bernice Williams of Wagram, Pearlie Rogers of Laurinburg, and Ella Jewell Cummings of McColl, SC.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Irene Cooper Elliott
Born in Marlboro County, SC on Nov. 13, 1931
Departed on Apr. 17, 2003 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Irene Cooper Elliott, 71, of 1108 Hammond Drive died Thursday, April 17, at her residence.

Funeral services will be 4:00 pm Sunday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Luther D. Kimrey. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

She is survived is survived by her husband of 54 years Charles M. Elliott of the home, one son, Charles Larry Elliott and wife, Marika of Merritt Island, FL; , one daughter, Gay E. Anderson and husband, Brett of Charlotte; and 3 grandchildren, Chad and Jennifer Elliott, and Lauren Anderson.

Born November 13, 1931 in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late George and Annie Rogers Cooper. Irene was a former employee of Southern Bell, and of Scotland Memorial Hospital and a former member of the Laurinburg Lions Club.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Michael Angelo Cox
Born in Richmond County, NC on Feb. 26, 1947
Departed on Apr. 16, 2003 and resided in Laurel Hill, NC.

Laurel Hill - Mr. Michael Angelo Cox, 56, of 17861 Church St. died Wednesday, April 16, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill officiated by Don Malpass and the Rev. Charlie Collins. Burial will follow in Pine crest Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Peele Cox; two sons, Christopher A. Cox of Laurel Hill and Boyd H. Walters, Jr. and wife, Tina of Gastonia; a daughter, Jennifer Walters Smith and husband, Rayford of Laurel Hill; a brother, Wayne Cox and wife, Kathy of Laurinburg; a sister, Sylvia Huckabee and husband, Harold of Laurel Hill; four grandchildren, Jessica Blair Smith, Casey Brooke Smith, Molly Francis Walters, and Rayn Hampton Walters of Laurel Hill; three nieces and one nephew.

Born February 26, 1947 in Richmond County, he was a son of the late Angelo Porter and Leila Sanderson Cox. He formerly served with the US Navy and was a retired employee of Owens-Illinois of Hamlet, NC. He also enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

Memorials may be made to the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, 1024 Washington St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill.

Ruth Sanford Frazier
Born in Monroe, NC on Sep. 4, 1917
Departed on Apr. 20, 2003 and resided in Greensboro, NC.

Greensboro, NC - Mrs. Ruth Sanford Frazier, 86, of 603 Crestwood Drive, Greensboro passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2003. At her bedside was her loving son Sanford (Sandy) Frazier of the home. Survivors include a son, T. Jefferson Frazier of Oakland, CA and a daughter, Catherine F. Rogers of Buffalo, NY.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Rev. Quinton Covington. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery.

She was born in Monroe, NC on September 4, 1917, the daughter of William Wesley and Flora Campbell Sanford. She was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters of whom one sister still survives, Mrs. Doris Maddox of Laurinburg and sister-in-law, Gladys Sanford. She is also survived by four grandsons and many special cousins. Appreciation is expressed to Ms. Mildred Bethune, Mrs. Billie Lathan, and especially Mrs. Pat Culp and her family, and Mrs. Judy Lee and her family for all their help and support.

Mrs. Frazier was a dedicated, honest, and hard working woman, who worked with all children up to the age of 80 when her handicap developed following a day of teaching school. She was truly an angel of love and kindness.

Visitation will be 9-11 a.m.Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.
