Wagram - Mr. James “Hobbie” Lowery, 65, of 30647 Hill Creek Road died Sunday, May 11, at his home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium officiated by the Rev. Winfred Blue. Burial will follow in the Blue Family Cemetery with James Lowery, David Lowery, Geoff Lowery, Frankie Lowery, Burt Locklear, and James Lowery serving as pallbearers.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa H. Lowery; two sons, James “Jimmy” Lowery of Wadesboro and Anthony “Tony” Lowery of Laurinburg; a daughter, Penny Locklear Lowery of Wagram; two step daughters, Sherry Jacobs of Laurinburg and Donna Slavin of Rocky Mount; two brothers, Clyde Lowery of Laurinburg and David Lowery of Oakboro; three sisters, Cattie Mae Cribb and Hazel Lowery of Laurel Hill and Bessie Brooks of Oakboro; nine grandchildren and a ex-wife and caregiver, Nancy Connor.

Born November 30, 1917 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Henry and Cattie Mae Lowery. He was a retired convenience store owner and a former truck driver for Wallace Trucking Co.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium of Laurinburg.

Maude Harris Steele Monroe
Born in Scotland County, NC on Feb. 18, 1916
Departed on May. 7, 2003 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Maude Harris Steele Monroe, 87, died Tuesday, May 7, at her residence.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Montpelier Presbyterian Church in Wagram officiated by the Rev. Holly Russell. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.

She is survived by a son, John Raymond Monroe and wife, Trulah of Carrollton, TX; a daughter, Susan Williams and husband, Fred of Franklin, TN; four grandchildren; Laurie Makarwich of Burleson, Tx; Brian Williams of Los Angeles, CA; Mathhew Monroe and Josh Monroe of Carrollton, TX and 3 great grandchildren.

Born February 18, 1916 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late John and Maude Harris Steele and widow of the late Raymond Monroe, Jr. She was a retired primary school teacher in Guilford and Forsyth Counties and later was a substitute teacher in Scotland County.

Memorials may be made to Montpelier Presbyterian Church, Wagram, NC 28396, Scotia Village Foundation, 2200 Elm Ave., Laurinburg, NC 28352, or Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Friday at the Scotia Village Thanks in Laurinburg.

Ruth Bradley McIlwain
Born in Rutherford County, NC on Nov. 2, 1920
Departed on May. 28, 2003 and resided in Wagram, NC.

Wagram - Mrs. Ruth Bradley McIlwain, 82, of 30261 Deercroft Drive, Deercroft died Wednesday May 28 at her home.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William C. McIlwain, Jr.; two sons, Hon. William C. McIlwain, III and wife, Sherry of Wagram, and James Bradley McIlwain and wife, Rhonda of Winston Salem; one daughter, Rev. Nancy McIlwain Morris and, husband Phillip of Roanoke, VA; two sisters, Frances Bradley and Hazel Bradley of Forest City, NC, and one brother, James Bradley of Lancaster, SC, and seven grandchildren.

Born November 2, 1920 in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late William Sidney and Nancy Eunice Davidson Bradley. Ruth graduated from Cool Springs High School in 1938, and from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. She was with the United States Army Nursing Corp from 1944-1945. She graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina. After her marriage on August 26, 1950 they lived in Memphis, TN. In 1953 they moved to the metro New York area, where she worked part time as a Public School nurse. In 1976 the McIlwains returned to North Carolina. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, and traveling to the mountains. She and her husband also had homes in Newland, and Winston Salem.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at the Cool Springs Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation will be held from 10am to noon at Padgett-King Funeral Home, Forest City.

Laurel Hill, NC - Mr.. Hugh C. Snead, 80, of Snead’s Grove Road died Monday, June 23, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the East Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church officiated by the Rev. Legrande Taylor. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Jernigan of Laurel Hill; a brother, Roy Snead and wife, Lorene, of Laurel Hill; a brother-in-law, Lindsey Quick and wife, Linda, of Laurinburg: two grandchildren, Blake Jernigan and Lauren Jernigan of Laurel Hill. He was predeceded in death by his wife, Margaret Snead, a brother, Alton B. Snead and a sister, Viola S. Boyd.

Born May 25, 1923 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late John and Bessie Snead. Hugh was a member of East Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a deacon and secretary of the Sunday School.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Tuesday at the East Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Sarah Margaret Hearn Durham
Born in Scotland County, NC on May. 16, 1910
Departed on Jun. 21, 2003 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Sarah Margaret Hearn Durham, 93, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Edwin Morgan Center.

A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Revs. Stan Smith and Nancy Willard. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

She is survived by a son, Joey Durham and wife Delaine of Laurinburg; a daughter, Nancy Davis and husband Clyde of Asheville, NC: two sisters, Esther McNeill of Rockingham, NC and Mildred Reynolds of Robbins, NC: two grandchildren, Joey Durham, Jr. and wife Wendy of Winston Salem, NC and Lee Davis and wife Susan of Elk River, MN: four great grandchildren, Carley Durham, Hayden Durham, Preston Schenck and Jackson Davis. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Durham and six brothers, Earl Hearn, Melvin Hearn, Edmond Hearn, Z.V. Hearn, Jr., Marshall Hearn and Hallie Hearn.

Born May 16, 1910 she was a daughter of the late Zeb Vance and Lola Wright Hearn. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Joy Club.

Ebbie Franklin Lassiter
Born in Lumberton, NC on Dec. 31, 1943
Departed on Jun. 19, 2003 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Mr. Ebbie Franklin Lassiter, 59, of 1213 Charles Drive died Thursday, June 19, at the Duke University Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Revs. L. D. Kimrey and Ken Smith. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by two daughters, Angie Lassiter of Laurinburg and Kim Thornburgh of Mobile, AL; his mother, Mae Lassiter of Laurinburg; a brother, Joe Lassiter of Laurinburg; 2 grandchildren, Kendall and Dawson Thornburgh of Mobile, AL.

Born December 31, 1943 in Lumberton, he was also a son of the late Julian Lassiter and widower of the late Dawn Trull Lassiter. Ebbie was a former manager for Kenny’s Superette and a retired life underwriter for Life of Virginia.

He was also a Deacon, member of the stewardship committee, Sunday school teacher, and vacation Bible schoolteacher at the First Baptist Church. Ebbie was also a member of the Laurinburg Optimist Club and coordinated the Life Underwriters Golf Tournament for transplant patients.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 883, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Saturday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Ann Holt Mitchell Williamson, 76, of Scotia Village died Monday, June 30, at Scotland Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jim Holderness and Rev. Elizabeth Forester.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew G. (Andy) Williamson of Laurinburg; her son, Andrew G. (Drew) Williamson, Jr. and wife, Katherine (Kathy) Grimes Williamson of Laurinburg; her daughter, Van Williamson Garrison and husband, Richard Dowell Garrison, of Cary; her grandchildren Holt, Sara, and Berry Williamson of Laurinburg. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

She was born December 1, 1926 in Cusseta, GA, a daughter of the late David Brady Mitchell and Mable Howard Mitchell. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism and did graduate work in education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After working as an elementary school teacher, she married icon Andrew Williamson in 1951 and moved to Maxton, NC and later to Laurinburg in 1960.

A homemaker, Mrs. Williamson also taught kindergarten and served as a volunteer teacher in childhood and adult literacy education. She was a member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Morris Morgan Center, Scotia Village. The family will also greet friends following the memorial service in the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Cross Roads Fellowship Church, Laurinburg. Burial will follow in King Cemetery in Laurel Hill.

Born November 4, 1920 in Marlboro County, SC a daughter of the late Arthur Douglas and Minnie Gattis Jackson. She was retired from Waverly Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie Chavis, and by her son Bobby Jackson.

She is survived by her sons Curtis Jackson of Piedmont OK, William Jackson of Richmond Hill, GA, and her daughter Linda Moody of Maxton, 15 Grandchildren, 34 Great Grandchildren and one Great-Great Grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7-9pm Tuesday evening at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium of Laurinburg.

Cyrus E. Newcomb

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Cyrus E. Newcomb, 93, died Saturday, June 28, 2003 at Scotia Village.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Trinity Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Tom Dendy.

Born February 22, 1910 in Twelve Mile, IN, he was a son of the late William and Nell Sneider Newcomb. He was a retired mechanical engineer for Lever Brother Company.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Woodall Newcomb; a son, William W. Newcomb of Charlottesville, VA; three daughters, Sue Fidler of Laurinburg, Sally Rademacher of Springfield, VA; and Marianne Becker of Indiana; a brother, Robert Newcomb of Ohio; a sister, Laura Newcomb of Virginia; 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Memorials are requested for Trinity Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 13000 Blue’s Farm Rd., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Born April 3, 1913 in Richmond County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie And Rosa Parks Jacobs and widow of the late James H. Daniels. She was a retired employee of Waverly Mills.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
