James Thomas "Jimmy" Webb, 65, of Fayetteville and formerly of Southern Pines died Tuesday, July 1, at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Caledonia United Methodist Church cemetery officiated by the Rev. Michael Brown. The family will received friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Born June 28, 1938 in Staten Island, NY, he was a son of the late John Colin and Lester Norton Webb. He was a disabled veteran of the US Air Force.

He is survived by a brother, John C. Webb, Jr. of Sumter, SC; a sister, Marilyn Morris of Fayetteville; 2 nieces, 2 great nieces, and one great nephew.

Memorials may be made to caledonia United Methodist Church, c/o 11680 Johns Rd., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Martha Ellen Jackson Chavis
Born in Marlboro County, SC on Nov. 4, 2003
Departed on Jun. 30, 2003 and resided in Red Springs, NC.

Red Springs, NC - Mrs. Martha Jackson Chavis, 82, of Greystone Manor, Red Springs, died Monday, June 30, 2003.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Cross Roads Fellowship Church, Laurinburg. Burial will follow in King Cemetery in Laurel Hill.

Born November 4, 1920 in Marlboro County, SC a daughter of the late Arthur Douglas and Minnie Gattis Jackson. She was retired from Waverly Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie Chavis, and by her son Bobby Jackson.

She is survived by her sons Curtis Jackson of Piedmont OK, William Jackson of Richmond Hill, GA, and her daughter Linda Moody of Maxton, 15 Grandchildren, 34 Great Grandchildren and one Great-Great Grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7-9pm Tuesday evening at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium of Laurinburg.

Leon Watson
Born in Tennessee
Departed on Jul. 1, 2003 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Leon Watson, 85, of 6108 Crestline Road died Tuesday, July 1, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

William Benton Pate, Sr.

William Benton “Billy” Pate, Sr.

Wilmington - William Benton “Billy” Pate, Sr., 42, of 255 Dare St., Wilmington died Wednesday, July 30, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 pm Sunday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg officiated by the Rev. Jimmy Tennant.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Pate of Myrtle Beach; his sons, William Pate, Jr. and Samuel Pate of Myrtle Beach; a daughter Melissa Pate of Myrtle Beach; his mother Elizabeth Chamberlain of Laurel Hill; his brothers, James Archie Pate, Jr. of Conyers, GA, Michael Pate of Marston, Keith Pate of Laurinburg, Larry Blue Pate, Donald Chad Pate, Robert Chamberlain, and Randy Chamberlain of Laurel Hill and his sister Debbie Cannon of Hampstead.

Born December 26, 1960 in Scotland County He was also the son of the late James Archie Pate, Jr. He was a self employed certified welder.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Saturday evening at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.

Joseph Evans McLean
Born in Scotland County, NC on Nov. 24, 1932
Departed on Jul. 31, 2003 and resided in Maxton, NC.
Cemetery: Oak Grove Cemetery

Maxton - Joseph Evans “Joe” McLean, 70, of 108 W. Cottingham St. died Thursday, July 31, at his home.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church officiated by the Revs. James Caviness and Diana Killian. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Elma McQueen McLean; two sons, Sanky Singletary and wife, Pam, of Myrtle Beach and David McLean and wife, Bobbe, of Laurinburg; a brother, Ernest McLean, Jr. of Laurinburg; two sisters, Margaret Sue Wilkes of Laurinburg and Nancy M. Colby of Longwood; three grandchildren, Eric Singletary, Clay Singletary, and Christopher McLean.

Born November 24, 1932 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Ernest and Sue Smith McLean. He served in the US Army during the Korean conflict and was retired as the line and service supervisor for Carolina Power and Light Co.

Joe was also a past president of the Maxton Jaycees, a member of the American Legion, and served as a head usher, trustee, and with the United Methodist Men at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

The family extends special thanks to Advantage Hospice and three special angels of mercy: Danielle Dial, RN; Felicia Lambert, RN; and Iris Collins, RN.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Emily K. Lodygowski
Born in Laurinburg, NC on Dec. 12, 1929
Departed on Jan. 12, 2003 and resided in Chicago, IL.

Mrs. Emily K. Lodygowski, 73, of Chicago, Ill, died January 12, 2003.

Memorial services will be 12 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2003 at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband Ronald Lodygowski, Sr. of Chicago, IL; four sons, Ronald Lodygowski, Jr., of Naperville, Ill., Michael Lodygowski of Schaumburg, IL, and Ted Lodygowski of Chicago, IL, and Edwin Lodygowski of Antioch, CA; two daughters, Mary Andersson of Mandeville, LA, Katie Ward of Montgomery, IL, three brothers, Marshall, Marcus, and Bennie Smith of Laurinburg; one sister, Ruth Holcomb also of Laurinburg; 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Born December 12, 1929 in Laurinburg. She is a daughter of the late Martin L. and Della Wright Smith.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. -12 p.m. Saturday September 6, 2003 at McDougald Funeral Home in Laurinburg.

Jane Robertson Harmon
Born in Philadelphia, PA on Jul. 25, 1924
Departed on Aug. 25, 2003 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Jane R. Harmon, 79, of 1220 Scotia Village, died Monday, August 25, 2003 at Scotia Village.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 30, at the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village, officiated by Chaplain Tom Groome.

She is survived by her husband, Henry M. Harmon; two sons, Owen Harmon of Neptune Beach, FL and David Harmon of Hamden, CT; two daughters, Linda Schummers of Baltimore and Carol Sanford of New Haven, CT; a brother, Jim Robertson of Autoban, PA; and 9 grandchildren.

Born July 25, 1924 in Philadelphia, she was a former resident of Hamden, CT and Seven Lakes, NC.

Gladys Joyce Taylor Brock

Laurinburg - Mrs. Gladys Joyce Taylor Brock, 60, 10560 Jamestown Drive died Saturday, August 30, at her home.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at the East Laurinburg Church of God officiated by the Rev. Jeff McGirt.

Burial will follow in Scotland Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Shane Polk of Chester, SC; Curtis Polk and Gerald Polk of Laurinburg; seven grandchildren, Christopher Polk, Kevin Polk, April Polk; Gina Polk, Chadwick Polk, Brittney Polk, and Brandi Polk; three brothers, Vernie C. Taylor of Newport News, VA, Grady Taylor of Dillon, SC, and Mitchell Taylor of Maxton; two sisters, Dorothy Taylor and Lois Dean Smith of Hamlet; a step brother, Nelson High of Laurinburg; three step sisters, Frances Allen of Dillon, Rachel Britt of Laurinburg, and Betty Garcia of Red Bluff, CA.

She was born October 22, 1942 in Marlboro County, SC a daughter of the late Roy and Gladys Taylor. She was a former employee of Campbell Soup and a member of East Laurinburg Church of God.

Mary Shaw Luke

Departed on Sep. 10, 2003 and resided in Birmingham, AL.

Birmingham, AL - Mrs. Mary Shaw Luke, 101, formerly of Scotland County, died on Wednesday, September 10, in Birmingham, Alabama.

Graveside services will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Wagram on Sunday, September 14 at 2:00 pm. With Rev. Holly Russell of Montpelier Presbyterian Church officiating.. A memorial service will be held at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, September 17 at 2:00 pm with Dr. Cary Speaker officiating.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Frances Whitmer and son-in-law, R. William Whitmer of Birmingham, AL, grandsons, William L. Whitmer and family of Decatur, Al and John B. Whitmer and family of Alabaster, AL, and three beloved nieces of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John W. Luke and son, John W. Luke, Jr.

Born October 5, 1901 in Scotland County she was a daughter of the late, William Graham Shaw and Mary Cattie Cooley Shaw. She was a graduate of Flora McDonald College in North Carolina and was a teacher. She married icon a Presbyterian Minister, Dr. John W. Luke and faithfully served with him for many years in the mountains of North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Johnny Luke Memorial Building, Glendale Springs Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 247, Glendale Springs, North Carolina, 28629.

Bryant Russell Stevens
Born in Scotland County, NC on Aug. 31, 1910
Departed on Sep. 17, 2003 and resided in Laurel Hill, NC.

Laurel Hill - Mr. Bryant Russell Stevens, 93, of 9302 Hwy 74 died Wednesday, September 17, at Pinelake Healthcare Center, Carthage, NC.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Laurel Hill United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Keith Brown.

Burial will follow in the Wright Cemetery.

He is survived by a daughter, Joyce Thomasson of Cameron; a step-son, James Pearson of Laurel Hill; four grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.

Born August 31, 1910 in Scotland County, he was a son of the late Frank M. and Modie Lee Stevens and widower of the late Sadie Smith Stevens. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. He was a retired salesman at Pate’s Hardware where he worked for 52 years, retiring on September 7, 1994. An active member of Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, Bryant was a former choir member, Sunday school teacher, and was a Lay Person of the Year. He was also a member of the Silver Scots and the Growing Friendship Club.

Visitation will be 7 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill.

Lawton Ward Kitchin
Born in Blacksburg, SC on Apr. 27, 1913
Departed on Sep. 27, 2003 and resided in Maxton, NC.
Cemetery: Oak Grove Cemetery

Maxton, NC - Mr. Lawton Ward Kitchin, 90, of 426 Johns Road died Saturday, September 27, at his home.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Norvin Forester. Burial precedes the service at Oak Grove Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Prevatte Kitchin; a son, Lawton Kitchin, Jr. of Warsaw; two daughters, Ann Lee of Norwood and Mary Ellen Creech of Laurinburg; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Born April 27, 1913 in Blacksburg, SC, he was a son of the late John Franklin and Verona Smith Kitchen. During World War II he was contracted to build bridges in coastal North Carolina for the government and started Kitchen Construction Company in 1946. He constructed the arched bridge at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Lawton was also a Deacon at the First Baptist Church.
