Laurinburg - Mrs. Virginia Livingston Muse, a longtime teacher in the Scotland County Schools, died Wednesday, September 8, at Scotia Village. She was 84.

“Mrs. Muse greatest gift was that she could convince a kid from no where that he could be anything, ” said David A. “Gus” Martin, former superintendent of Scotland County Schools and a student in her 1960 seventh grade class at Laurel Hill School. “With Mrs. Muse, it was not just about imparting knowledge – not just about learning history or language, although I learned a lot about both – but about caring and believing in the unique abilities and potential of each of her students.”

Over three decades of teaching, Mrs. Muse inspired a number of her students to pursue teaching careers and she considered this her “finest” professional legacy.

In addition to Dr. Martin, they include Thomas Clark, currently principal of Bennettsville Middle School and former principal of Sycamore Land Middle School and South Scotland Primary School; Jane Duncan Stogner, art professor at Furum College in Virginia; and Jane Muse Fitzgerald-Dye, her youngest daughter and principal of Belle Chasse Academy in New Orleans, LA.

After graduating in 1935 from Laurinburg High School, she attended the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, graduating in 1939 with a major in elementary education and a special fondness for teaching 7th graders. She spent 25 of her 32 years in the classroom teaching seventh grade language arts.

“In seventh grade, Mrs. Muse molded me into the student I was capable of becoming, ” said Mr. Clark, principal of Bennettsville Middle School. “In later years, it was her continued influence that motivated me to become the best teacher I could be.”

Upon retirement from teaching in 1980, she was an active volunteer in several local organizations, including the American Red Cross, the Scotland County Nursing Home Advisory board, the Scotland County Historical Society, and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, where she was a founding member 35 years ago.
