E. Laurinburg - Mr. William Paul Britt, 88, of 13 Third Street died Sunday, April 10, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, April 13, 11 AM at the East Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church officiated by the Revs. Michael Price and George Hawkins.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Britt of the home; a son, Alvin Britt of the home; one daughter, Wanda Lindeberg of Vero Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Natalee Moldenhaur of Denver, CO, Elisse Tessier of Gilbert AZ, Evette Spickelmier of Maryville, TN; six great grandchildren.
Born June 10, 1916 in Bladen County, he was a son of the late Will and Myrtle Sibett Britt.
Mr. Britt retired from Waverly Mills where he was a maintenance foreman. He was employed with Waverly Mills for 40 years. He was also a Charter Member of the Scotland County Rescue Squad and a member of Woodmen of The World. Mr. Britt was a lifetime member of East Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church and started the building fund for the new church.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening 6-8 pm at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
Fodie Strickland Bowen

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Fodie Strickland Bowen, 96, of 517 Peden Street, formerly of 429 McKay Street, died Saturday April 9, 2005 at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel, with Rev. Lewis McLean and Rev. Steve Owenby officiating.
Mrs. Bowen is survived by two daughters, Julia B. Byrd and husband, Bill of Laurinburg and Mary B. Ellis of Laurinburg; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Angus Bowen; a daughter, Viola Hardee; a grandson, William Thomas Guy; fourteen brothers and sisters; two sons-in-law, Ed Ellis and Lonnie Hardee.
Born March 5, 1909 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late Tilden and Alice Driggers Strickland. She was retired from Waverly Mills and was a member of Pleasant View Presbyterian Church. “Mrs.Fodie” was known and loved by many. As long as she was able she would bake sweet potato bread, pies, cakes and fruitcakes for her many friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.

Jimmy Driggers

Maxton, NC - Mr. Jimmy Driggers, 57, of 50 Kalyn Road died Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Multitudes, officiated by the Rev. Opie Swails. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Park.
He is survived by a son, Jeffery Driggers of Maxton; three daughters, Mary Beth Driggers of Rowland, NC, Sarah Driggers and Shelley Locklear of Maxton; two brothers, Bobby Winburn of Laurel Hill and Franklin Winburn of Laurinburg; four sisters, Geneva Patterson, and Linda Shoemaker of Shallotte, NC, Etta Mae Winburn and Loretta Shaw of Laurel Hill, NC; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Driggers.
Born May 11, 1947 in Marlboro County, SC, he was a son of the late Clarence B. and Gretchen Driggers Winburn. He was employed as a mechanic with Edwards Wood Products and attended Multitudes.
Visitation was held 7-9 PM, Sunday evening at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
Florabelle Jones Ward
Born in Horry County, SC on May 7, 1914

Laurinburg - Mrs. Florabelle Jones Ward, 90, of 8141 McQueen Road, died Tuesday, April 5, at her residence.
Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Laurel Hill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 12:00 noon Friday, April 8, at the church officiated by Don Malpass. Burial will be 4:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery near Wampee, SC.
She is survived by a daughter, Connie Hendrix and husband, Jerry of Laurinburg; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Born May 7, 1914 in Horry County, SC, she was a daughter of the late F. C. and Julia Hattie Jones and the widow of the late Lloyd Ward. She later moved to Elizabethtown, NC where she was a member of the Elizabethtown Baptist Church and Sunday school teacher for 35 years and also an assistant teacher in their day school. She later moved to Laurinburg to be with her daughter and was active in Sunday school at Laurel Hill Baptist Church and a member of the WMU.

Laurel Hill - Mrs. Nealie Clark Norton, 86, of the Sneadtown Community died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at her home.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wagram Emmanuel Holiness Church officiated by the Revs. Ronnie Norton, Michael Melvin, and Harry Clark. Burial will follow in McNeill Cemetery.
Born December 13, 1918 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late Octavius and Mary Cole Clark. She was a homemaker, widow of the late William Norton, Sr. and a beloved mother and grandmother.
She is survived by six sons, Charles Norton and wife, Chris of Wallace, SC, William Norton, Jr. and wife, Becky and Richard Norton and wife, Cindy of Laurinburg, Harrison Norton and wife, Iris, Ronald Norton and wife, Faye, and Larry Norton and wife, Dianne of Laurel Hill; three daughters, Margaret Graves, Betty Hatcher and husband, Jimmy, and Carol Speight of Laurel Hill; a sister, Evelina Morton of Laurinburg; 30 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene T. Norton, Sr., a daughter, Martha N. Holloway, and a granddaughter, April Holloway.

Myrtle Long McNeill Watts

Laurinburg - Mrs. Myrtle Long McNeill Watts, 97, formerly of Highland Road died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Century Care.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Russell Baker. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
Born October 5, 1907 in Columbus County, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Sallie Fowler Long and widow of the late Hector McNeill and Liston Watts. She was a retired employee of Waverly Mills.
She is survived by a son, Paul McNeill of Laurinburg; a step-son, L. J. Watts of Laurinburg; 8 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Earl McNeill and a step-son, Floyd Watts, and a step-daughter, Annie Jane Kohnen.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
Loraine Bledsoe Singleton

Laurinburg - Mr. L. B. Singleton, 99, formerly of 303 West Boulevard died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Autumn Care in Shallotte.
A graveside service will be 5 p.m. Thursday at Hillside Memorial Park officiated by the Rev. Dwight Williams.
He is survived by a two daughters, Suzanne Gibson and husband, Gib of Rockingham, and Marilyn Singleton of Sunset Beach; a sister, Jean Robbins of Aberdeen; three grandchildren, Claire Gibson of Columbia, SC, Bryan Gibson of Rockingham, and Darius Raji of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Florence Singleton.
Born September 5, 1905 in Montgomery County, he was a son of the late John M. and Lena Alice Leach Singleton. He obtained his education at Davidson College, UNC-CH and received his Masters at Columbia University.
L. B. was a teacher, coach, principal and worked for the NC Dept. of Agriculture, was a educational director with the Civilian Conservation Corps, and was personnel director for Waverly Mills until his retirement in 1970. Following his retirement he started a moving and storage business which he operated until 1989.

Mary Sue Ray Hicks

Laurel Hill, NC - Mrs. Mary Sue Ray Hicks 80, of Old Wire Road died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church in the Pines with burial following at Hillside Memorial Park.
Born August 25, 1924 in Cherryville, NC, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Florence Pridgen Ray.
She is survived by her daughters, Connie Coleman and husband, Harry of Laurel Hill and Robin Parker and husband, Billy of Florence, SC; a brother, Bobby “HW” Ray and wife, Betty of Laurinburg; two grandchildren, Charlotte Johns and husband, Brad of Sanford, Christopher “Kris” Coleman and wife, Meg of Laurel Hill; three great grandchildren, Kristian Johns, Austin Johns and Kinsley Raye Johns. She was preceded in death by her husband, Connie Z. “Jack” Hicks.
Sue was an active member of Presbyterian Church in the Pines where she was an Elder and chaired the Women of the Church. She was a member of the Laurel Hill Community Fellowship.
In August of 2004, Sue celebrated her 80th birthday at the Presbyterian Church in the Pines with a drop-in, attended by many friends and family as well as former high school friends to help celebrate. She loved to go places with her family and friends as well as doing embroidery for them. She enjoyed gardening and reading. Sue was a special mother, grandmother, Mema, Meme, and firend and will be greatly missed.

Jeptha Nelson Gibson

Laurinburg - Mr. J. Nelson Gibson, 86, of Scotia Village and formerly of Gibson died Monday, April 17, at Scotia Village.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Gibson United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Harold Salmon. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Smith Gibson; three daughters, Josephine Fisher of Surf City, Margie Whitlock of Gibson, and Anne Tang of Marietta, GA; two sisters, Elizabeth Tysor of Moyock and Catherine Lang of Greenville; 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Born September 14, 1918 in Gibson, he was a son of the late Jeptha Nelson and Martha Kilgo Gibson.
Nelson graduated from Duke University in 1939 and did post graduate work at Georgetown University and served four years with the US Army during World War II where he was a cryptanalyst at the Supreme Allied Headquarters in Europe.
Following the war he returned to Gibson where he successfully changed farming practices and was a noted cotton farmer. He also served on the boards of Cotton, Inc. and the National Cotton Council.
The Methodist Church was Nelson’s love. He was an active lay leader in the NC Conference and worked hard to establish Methodist College in Fayetteville where he was on the first Board of Trustees and served as a trustee for 32 years.
In 1966, Nelson was named to “Who’s Who in the Methodist Church.” He served on the Board of Global Ministries from 1968-76, chairing the Finance Committee and the National Division. In the 1970’s he headed a $5 million capital campaign for the Lake Junaluska Conference Center.
He also served as a Scotland County Commissioner, board chairman of Scotland Memorial Hospital, and a member of the NC Board of Water and Air Resources.
In 1999 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humanities by Methodist College.
Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village.

She is survived by a nephew, John Dorsey of Laurinburg and a niece, Barbara Cluck of Laurinburg.
Born December 1, 1915 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Mary Coble Blue. Until the 1960’s she operated the family farming business. She, along with her late husband, were active in the realty business in Cherry Grove Beach, SC and also developed Lake Wood Hills in Laurinburg.
