Laurel Hill - Mrs. Nealie Clark Norton, 86, of the Sneadtown Community died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at her home.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wagram Emmanuel Holiness Church officiated by the Revs. Ronnie Norton, Michael Melvin, and Harry Clark. Burial will follow in McNeill Cemetery.
Born December 13, 1918 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late Octavius and Mary Cole Clark. She was a homemaker, widow of the late William Norton, Sr. and a beloved mother and grandmother.
She is survived by six sons, Charles Norton and wife, Chris of Wallace, SC, William Norton, Jr. and wife, Becky and Richard Norton and wife, Cindy of Laurinburg, Harrison Norton and wife, Iris, Ronald Norton and wife, Faye, and Larry Norton and wife, Dianne of Laurel Hill; three daughters, Margaret Graves, Betty Hatcher and husband, Jimmy, and Carol Speight of Laurel Hill; a sister, Evelina Morton of Laurinburg; 30 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene T. Norton, Sr., a daughter, Martha N. Holloway, and a granddaughter, April Holloway.

William Webb Coppedge

Laurinburg - William Webb “Bill” Coppedge, 79, of Pine Harbor Drive died Saturday, April 30, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Bill, son of the late Water Duffy and Lola Webb Coppedge was born November 28, 1925 in Rockingham. At the age of two he moved to his boyhood home of Candor where he resided with his uncle, Dr. Neilson Coppedge, “Aunt Bebe” Coppedge and cousins, Elizabeth Benett, Charlotte Benett, and Rachel Benett.
Bill’s distinguished career included 3 years Naval service in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Following the war he obtained his high school diploma from Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton where he was a member of the varsity football team and was an Honorable Mention of the Little All-America Football Team in 1948.
Bill went on to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree from UNC-CH and a law degree from University of Richmond Law School in 1957. Following law school, Bill maintained memberships in the Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association. His career initially included work with the Bureau of Mines and the Atomic Energy Commission in the southeastern US.
Following law school he obtained a position as an attorney with the Virginia Farm Bureau. Moving to Raleigh in 1959, Bill worked as a legal advisor and insurance manager with Farmers Cooperative Exchange. From there he was named Securities Deputy for the State of North Carolina and continued working with the Secretary of State Department until 1979. After briefly working with Winn-Dixie in the commercial property division, Bill founded Coppedge Commercial Realty where he worked until retirement.
An active community member, Bill held five chairs at the Raleigh Elks Lodge #735 including serving as Exalted Ruler, two years as chairman of Amercanism for the NC State Elks Association and president of the NC State Elks Past Exalted Rulers Association. In addition, Bill served as the Director of the Raleigh Cultural Center.
At the time of his death he was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Maxton.
Bill was a very loving husband and father. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sara Alice Austin of Maxton.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca S. Coppedge, daughters, Alice McBryde Coppedge of Asheville, Mary Neil Morris and husband, Pete of Laurinburg; granddaughter, Sara Rebecca Morris and grandson, William Austin Morris of Laurinburg; sisters, Agnes Savage of Fayetteville and Grace White of Paris, TN.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Maxton officiated by the Rev. Robert Dendy. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Francis Howard Biddell

Laurinburg, NC - Dr. Francis Howard Biddell, 88, formerly of Prince Street died Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Hospice’s Morrison Manor.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Stan Smith and the Rev. Nancy Willard. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Born February 11, 1917 in Fayetteville, he was a son of the late Howard and Ruth Blue Jones Biddell. Francis graduated from Oak Ridge Military academy, Presbyterian Junior College, and the Emory University dental school. In 1940 he started his dental practice in Laurinburg. In 1942 he married
the late Caroline (Tessie) Daniel and was called to service in the US Navy. Following World War II he returned to his dental practice in Laurinburg.
Francis was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a former teacher for the Ed Guest Sunday School class.
He is survived by two sons, Dan Biddell and wife, Christine of Bostic, NC and Joe Alex Biddell and wife, Alda of Raleigh; a daughter, Ruth Thompson and husband, John of Leland; a brother, Dr. Alex Biddell and wife, Betty of Laurinburg; 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Mary Sue Ray Hicks

Laurel Hill, NC - Mrs. Mary Sue Ray Hicks 80, of Old Wire Road died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church in the Pines with burial following at Hillside Memorial Park.
Born August 25, 1924 in Cherryville, NC, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Florence Pridgen Ray.
She is survived by her daughters, Connie Coleman and husband, Harry of Laurel Hill and Robin Parker and husband, Billy of Florence, SC; a brother, Bobby “HW” Ray and wife, Betty of Laurinburg; two grandchildren, Charlotte Johns and husband, Brad of Sanford, Christopher “Kris” Coleman and wife, Meg of Laurel Hill; three great grandchildren, Kristian Johns, Austin Johns and Kinsley Raye Johns. She was preceded in death by her husband, Connie Z. “Jack” Hicks.
Sue was an active member of Presbyterian Church in the Pines where she was an Elder and chaired the Women of the Church. She was a member of the Laurel Hill Community Fellowship.
In August of 2004, Sue celebrated her 80th birthday at the Presbyterian Church in the Pines with a drop-in, attended by many friends and family as well as former high school friends to help celebrate. She loved to go places with her family and friends as well as doing embroidery for them. She enjoyed gardening and reading. Sue was a special mother, grandmother, Mema, Meme, and firend and will be greatly missed.

John Henry Thompson

Maxton, NC - Mr. J. Henry Thompson, 87, of 600 Bryant Circle, died Sunday July 24, 2005 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Rev. Mack McMillan. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Born September 22, 1917 in Whiteville, he was a son of the late John William and Janie Bell Bright Thompson. He was a foreman with Hasty Plywood for forty years. Henry also enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his son, James Thompson of Laurinburg; three daughters, Linda Spencer and husband, Jim, and Deborah Thompson Dial of Laurinburg, and Rose Woollen of Arlington, VA; a sister, Frances Hester of Bladenboro; twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great-great grandchild.

Martha Dixon Stogner

Laurinburg, NC - Miss Martha Dixon Stogner, 65, of 1703 Stonewall Road died Tuesday, July 26, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be 9:30 am. Friday at Hillside Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Elizabeth Forester.
She is survived by an uncle, Dr. Tom Henley of Laurinburg and numerous friends at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.
Born May 13, 1940 in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late George Hunter and Annie Christine Henley Stogner. Martha was a faithful member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church where she attended regularly as long as her health permitted. She sang in the church choir for a time, was a member of Circle One of Presbyterian Women and always enjoyed the children of the church. She loved her Bible and read it faithfully. Her simple, child-like faith was a gift of grace that will long be remembered.

Laura Graham Wilkinson Cheney

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Laura Graham Wilkinson Cheney, 94 ended her journey on this earth Saturday, July 30, 2005. She was born in Laurinburg, May 20, 1911.
In 1979, Laura and her husband, the Rev. George R. Cheney, Jr. returned to Laurinburg for their retirement years. She loved Scotland County and was so proud to be from a line of Scots who settled in this area. She graduated from Laurinburg High School in 1929 and Teacher’s College/ Greensboro 1933. After teaching for a few years, in Gibson and Sanford, NC., she returned to school for a degree from Columbia University, in New York City. Her first teaching job after graduating was in Wilmington, Delaware. Then she was an instructor at Delta State Teacher’s College in Cleveland, Mississippi.
Laura married
George R. Cheney, Jr., from Delaware in 1943 while he was serving his country in the Army. They had three daughters, Ann Gilchrist, Elizabeth Graham and Jane Knox. When George became a minister, Laura and George served in four different pastorates: Ashland, VA., West End, NC., Fayetteville, NC. and Raeford, NC. Throughout her life, Laura loved people and God’s creation. She was a teacher at heart always eager to learn and to teach others. She had that joy of life and learning that is contagious. It was difficult to be around her and not appreciate all life has to offer. She would be the first to tell you that her joy came from the Lord. Her life was a lesson on how to live a faith-full life. She told her family more than once, “Don’t grieve my loss, because I am going Home to be with God.” So we, her family and friends celebrate her life and are thankful for knowing and loving her.
An exceptional mother and grandmother, Laura is survived by: her daughters; Ann Hazzard of Atlanta, Bess Cheney-Smith of Laurinburg and Jane Knox Wolley of Memphis, TN.; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

James is survived by his wife, Pansy Guyton Herring; a son, James Edward (Ed) Herring, Jr. and wife, Carla of Laurinburg; a daughter, Wendy Edgerley and husband, Dale of Laurinburg; a brother, John Richard Herring and wife, Margaret of Laurinburg; three grandchildren, Taylor Edgerley, Hannon and Harmon Herring.
James was born September 27, 1940 in Bennettsville, SC a son of the late John Richard Herring and Louise Gibson Wallace. He grew up in Laurel Hill, graduating from Laurel Hill High School. He was formerly in management with Cone Mills and later Cheraw Dyeing and Finishing before retiring at Waverly Mills. He was also a Mason and Shriner and past Master of the Hamlet Masonic Lodge.

She is survived by a sister, Violet McIntyre of Laurinburg; a neice, Margaret Farrah-Sullivan of Rockingham and a great nephew, Wayne “Butch” Farrah, III of Rockingham. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles B. Everett, Allen M. Everett, Frank W. Everett, and Baxter M. Everett.
Born April 30, 1922 in Laurinburg, She was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Carrie Genes Everett. She was a retired employee of Morgan-Jones, Spring Maid, and J. P. Stevens. She was also a life long member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church where she was in the Fulton Bible Class and Circle #2. An avid gardener, she was also a member of Scotch Gardeners.

Margaret Dixon McMillan McLaurin

Laurinburg - Mrs. Margaret Dixon McMillan McLaurin of Laurinburg died peacefully at her home Wednesday, August 10, 2005.
Mrs. McLaurin was born June 28, 1908 in Scotland County to the late Hector C. and Sallie McMillan. She was a former member of the Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian and a long time member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. She attended Peace College in Raleigh. In 1934 she married
the late Roy D. McLaurin and was a devoted wife and homemaker who enjoyed cooking and entertaining. Mrs. McLaurin was a charter member of the Halcyon Bridge Club, and a member of the Scotland Memorial Foundation, and the Tower Club at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. A loving mother to her daughter, Jean, “MaMac, ” as she was affectionately known, greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. McLaurin was preceded in death by her husband, Roy: her brothers, Joseph, Sellars, Will, and Ernest; and her sisters, Maie, Sarah, and Emma Lee.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean McLaurin Graham of Raleigh; three grandchildren, William McLaurin Graham and wife, Christine, of Isle of Palms, SC, John McMillan Graham and wife, Lisa, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Sally Graham Helweg and husband, Joe, of Charlotte; and five great grandchildren, Margaret Dixon Graham, Riley Marie Graham, John Walbridge Helweg, Elizabeth Cooke Helweg, and William Graham Helweg.
A visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home. A private burial will be followed by a memorial service 11 a.m. Friday at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Neal Carter officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.
