Robert Howard Ashworth

Laurinburg, NC - Mr. Robert Howard “Bob” Ashworth, 83, of Scotia Village died Thursday, February 2, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village officiated by the Rev. Dr. Stan Smith, the Rev. John Cottingham, and Chaplain Tom Groome.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Richardson Ashworth; a daughter, Beth Jones and husband, Jerry of Leland; a brother, John T. Ashworth of Richmond, VA; a sister, Ruth Varney of Paradise, CA; a granddaughter, Julia Jones of Asheville.

Born September 2, 1921 in Buffalo Creek, WV, he was a son of the late John T. and Olive Hobson Bibb Ashworth. He served with the US Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airbase as a glider mechanic.

Bob was a CLU, and was in insurance sales in Richmond, VA for 42 years. While in Richmond he taught Sunday school for 22 years and was the administrative board secretary at Centenary United Methodist Church. He was also a clarinet and sax player and the founder of a German oompa band.

He has been a residence of Scotia Village for 4 years.

Visitation will follow the memorial service at Scotia Village.

Russell Bullard Shaw
Born in Bladen County, NC on Nov. 19, 1930
Departed on Jan. 31, 2006 and resided in Wilson, NC.

Wilson, NC - Mr. Russell Bullard Shaw, 75, of 4761 Ward Blvd. Died Tuesday, January 31, at Wilson Medical Center in Wilson.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh officiated by the Rev. John Singletary.

He is survived by three sons, David Shaw of Huntersville, Van Shaw of Myrtle Beach, and Monty Shaw of Wilkesboro; a daughter, Myra Peterson of Raleigh; a sister, Betty Sue Grissom of Fayetteville.

Born November 19, 1930 in Bladen County, he was a former butcher for A & P Supermarkets.

Flora Gilchrist Jordan
Born in Buie, NC on Jan. 5, 1919
Departed on Feb. 6, 2006 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.
Cemetery: Hillside Cemetery

Laurinburg - Mrs. Flora Gilchrist Jordan, 87, of Scotia Village and formerly of Peden Street died Monday, February 6, at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Neil Carter and Elizabeth Forester.

Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Joe Jordan, Jr. and wife, Jane of Raleigh and Mike Jordan and wife, Mary of Houston, TX; two sisters, Margaret Wycheck of Kenner, LA and Catherine Kubida of Colorado Springs, CO; five grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and her dear friend, Nell Spencer of Laurinburg.

Born January 5, 1919 in Buie, she was a daughter of the late John Leach and Margaret Carmichael Gilchrist. Flora was an outstanding educator and retired as the Director of Exceptional Children for the Scotland County Schools. Her hobbies included raising orchids, gardening, smocking, reading and cooking.

Memorials may be made to Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, 600 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Morris Morgan Room, Scotia Village.

Sidney Eliza Garrock Easterlin
Born in Mayesville, NC on Sep. 18, 1916
Departed on Feb. 7, 2006 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Mrs. Sidney Eliza Gerock Easterlin, 89, of 401 Forest Rd., PO Box 296, died Tuesday, February 7, at the Edwin Morgan Center.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel officiated by the Rev. Dr. Howard Whitehurst.

A private burial will precede the service at Oak Grove Cemetery, Maxton.

She is survived by a son, G. L. Easterlin, Jr. and wife, Arenda Mills of Laurinburg; three daughters, Beverly Murray of Laurinburg, Martha Canada and husband, Frank of Collinwood, TN, and Patricia Milligan and husband, Gordon of Laurinburg; 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Amie Gerock Easterlin and her husband, Guilford Leo “Pete” Easterlin.

Born September 18, 1916 in Mayesville, NC, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Mary Elizabeth Freeman Gerock. For many years she was co-owner and operator of Easterlin’s Supermarket. Eliza was famous for her lunch counter at the supermarket and her hamburgers, collard sandwiches, and pork chop sandwiches.

Dr. Margaret Snow Houston
Born in Wisconsin
Departed on Feb. 9, 2006 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.

Laurinburg - Dr. Margaret Snow Houston, age 61, died Thursday, February 9, at her home after a brief illness.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be 5 p.m. Sunday, February 19, at the Belk Student Center, St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Friends, guests, and family are asked to dress casually for the event.

Interment will be at the family plot in Rosendale, WI.

Dr. Houston was the director of the Indian Museum of the Carolinas in Laurinburg, a lecturer in the Departments of Sociology and American Indian Studies of UNC-Pembroke, and assistant professor if the department of anthropology at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Dr. Houston received her BA from the University of Pennsylvania and her MA and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her studies and interests took her to China as a teacher and to Oaxaca, Mexico as a researcher in paleoethnobotany and a student of pre-Columbian culture. She also lent her expertise to archaeology projects in Laurinburg and preservation of the Mill Prong House in Hoke County.

Author of numerous distinguished papers on China and Mexico, her continuing research interests included prehistoric subsistence and recovery methods, tropical agricultural systems, theory and method of ceramic analysis, modern Mesoamerican pottery making techniques, Mesoamerican ethnohistory and market systems, origin of the state, Chinese archaeology, and climate change.

She was a member of the Society for American Archaeology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, North Carolina Archaelogical Council which she served as secretary-treasurer (1990-92), the Southeastern Archaeological Conference, Instituto Welte de Estudios Oaxaquenos and the Society for Ethnobotany.

Dr. Houston was also an active member of the Dames of St. Andrews, the Scotland County Democratic Women, and a supporter of the American Red Cross of Scotland County. Her life was also defined by an abiding interest - nurtured by her father, Walter Scott Houston - in astronomy and telescope making. She was a frequent attendee at the Springfield (VT) Telescope Makers' annual 'Stellafane' convention. IN addition, Margaret was a jewelry maker, gourmet cook and 'Star wars' aficionado.

Margaret was an inspiration and a joy to her family, all of whom she encouraged to lead more interesting lives. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Miriam (Hill) Houston, and is survived by her sisters, Ann and Kay Houston; a brother-in-law, Christopher Wren; nephew, John Wren; and niece, Lili Wren; and dear friends, Walt and Linda Wheeler.

Katherine McIntyre White
Born in Scotland Co., NC on Aug. 2, 1931
Departed on Feb. 12, 2006 and resided in Maxton, NC.

Katherine (Kakie) McIntyre White, 74, of 701 McCaskill Avenue, Maxton, NC, died Sunday, February 12th, 2006, at the Pinehurst Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Pinehurst, NC, following a long illness. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, February 14th, at 4:00 pm at Center Presbyterian Church in Maxton, officiated by Rev. Dr. Douglas Hix, with burial following in the Church cemetery.

She was the widow of Ben A. White, to whom she was married icon for 51 years. She is survived by son Alex of Boston, MA; son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons Paul, Carol, Ty, and Ben of Carthage, NC; sister Flora Bell (Flossie) McIntyre Hooper of Reidsville, NC; brothers William H. McIntyre (Billy) and Malcolm (Mac) M. McIntyre of Laurinburg, NC; and 13 nieces and nephews.

She was born on August 2, 1931, in Laurinburg, NC, the daughter of the late B.C. and Sarah McCormick McIntyre. She was a 1949 graduate of Laurinburg High School and a 1953 graduate of Women’s College in Greensboro, NC.

She taught primary school children for 32 years in Maxton and Laurinburg, NC, and in San Bernadino, CA, and had been a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society for women educators. She was a member of Centre Presbyterian Church, where she had served as teacher and deacon, and was a lifetime member of the Women of the Church.

John Loel Chamberlin
Born in New York on Oct. 6, 1933
Departed on Feb. 12, 2006 and resided in Wagram, NC.

Wagram, NC - Mr. John Loel Chamberlin, 72 of 16500 Lakeshore Drive, Deercroft, died Sunday February 12, 2006 in UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev. Howard Whitehurst.

Born October 6, 1933 he was a son of the late Bayard and Esther Snyder Chamberlin. He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Revere Printing in Rome, NY for many years. John was a member of the Elk’s Club, Presbyterian Church of Verona, NY and attended Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Lord Chamberlin of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Melissa Chamberlin of Mendota, VA; a daughter Marjorie C. Relyea and husband, Dennis of Verona, NY; a daughter and son-in-law, Mikki and John Thurston of Sherrill, NY. Also surviving are grandchildren; Bryan and Emily Chamberlin, Katherine and Laura Chamberlin, Dennis, Ross and Shannon Relyea, Elizabeth and Emily Thurston.

The family will receive friends from 2-4pm Wednesday afternoon and 7-9pm Wednesday evening at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.

James Robert Shipman
Born in Columbus County, NC on Jul. 25, 1924

Chapel Hill, TN - James R. “Bobby” Shipman, 81, died Sunday, February 12, 2006 at his home in Chapel Hill, TN, after an extended illness.

Funeral services with full military honors will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel with the Rev. Francis Shipman officiating. Burial will follow in Pate Cemetery.

Born July 25, 1924 in Columbus County, NC he was a son of the late William and Margaret Priest Shipman. He retired after 20 years of service in the United States Navy having served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Shipman also retired as an assistant regional manager for the General Services Administration for the United States Federal Government. He was also very active in the Walking Horse Industry having owned and showed many Walking Horses. Mr. Shipman was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Ruth Norton Shipman who died in 1992; a daughter, Margaret Chapman; a sister, Virginia Tomaso; a brother, Elmer Shipman and by a grandson, Staff Sgt. Todd Edward Nunes who was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Nunes of Chapel Hill, TN and Mary Catherine Shipman of Vienna, VA; one son, Clyde R. Shipman of New Bern, NC; one sister, Dorothy Baldwin of Clarkton, NC; two brothers, William Shipman of Grotten, CN and Rev. Francis Shipman of Timmonsville, SC; one Grandson, Brian Nunes and four Great Grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Friday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Mary Louise Bailey Eaton
Born on Jan. 20, 1925
Departed on Feb. 18, 2006 and resided in Laurinburg, NC.
Cemetery: Veteran's Affairs Cemetery

Laurinburg, NC - Mrs. Mary Louise Bailey Eaton, 81, of Scotia Village, Laurinburg died Friday, February 19, at her residence.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Veterans’ Affairs Cemetery in Dallas, TX.

She is survived by two daughters, Angela Wilcox of Laurinburg and Camille Romig of Huff’s Church, PA; four sons, William R. Eaton, Jr. of Raymond, MS, John B. Eaton of Sacramento, CA, Gregory S. Eaton of Denton, TX, and Mark T. Eaton of Windsor, CO; eight grandchildren.

During World War II she enlisted in the Women’s Army Air Force, serving at the Herington Army Air Force Base, Morris County, KS. Mary was once a regional director of the Girl Scouts of America, active in the Junior Auxiliary, and did charity work for cancer research.

Laurinburg - Teresa Rogers Saunders, age 57, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, January 18, 2013.

Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Springfield Church of God. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

She is survived by her husband, Albert "Gene" Saunders, Jr.; her son: Albert "Gene" Saunders III, wife Abby Saunders, their children Truitt and Barrett of Hampstead, NC; her daughter: Courtney Paige Saunders of Laurinburg; her parents, Rufus and Ruby Rogers of Laurinburg; her brother, Darrell Rogers of Jessup, Georgia; her sister: Janet Mudd and husband Andy Mudd, and their children Heather and Andrew of Laurinburg; her brothers: Steven Rogers of Laurinburg and Michael Simmons of Lumberton, NC; and multiple other nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at McDougald Funeral Home and crematorium and 10 – 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Springfield Church of God.

Mrs. Ruby Johnson Fowler

Mrs. Ruby Johnson Fowler, 88, died Friday February 1, at Scotia Village in Laurinburg.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the Morris Morgan Room at Scotia Village officiated by the Rev. C.F. McDowell, III. A visitation will follow the memorial service at Scotia Village.

Ruby was born May 1, 1924 in Galivants Ferry, SC, the daughter of the late Stanley and Annie Lou Murrow Johnson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Ruby was a former Registered Nurse at Scotland Memorial Hospital and also worked as a social worker and attendance counselor for the Scotland County School System. Ruby was a talented seamstress and artist. Her loving and caring nature was a blessing to many during her lifetime.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert B. Fowler; two daughters, Carol Fowler of Laurinburg and Evelyn Fischer and husband, Ralph of Charlotte; a son-in-law, William S. Myers, Sr. and wife, Carolyn of Greenville, NC; a brother Palmer Johnson and wife, Nora of Laurinburg; five grandchildren, William Steve Myers, Jr and wife, Jodi, Kathryn Fowler Myers, Christopher Oates, Harris Ipok and Corey Fischer and wife, Jacqueline; three great grandchildren, Paxton Lewis, John Myers and Ellen Fischer. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Ann Fowler Myers; a brother, Bill Johnson and two sisters, Frances J.Shelley and Sally J. Graham.
