Mr. Walter Monroe Moody, 83, former superintendent of the Latta Area Schools, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at St. Eugene Community Hospital in Dillon, SC.
He was a son of the late Alton Carol Moody and Sallie Hayes Moody of Lake View, SC.
Mr. Moody was principal of Bermuda-High Hill Elementary School, Dillon County, from 1937 to 1940 and principal of the Kemper School, Dillon County, from 1940 to 1942. He entered World War II as a second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Corps until 1946 and returned to the Kemper School as principal until 1949. He was then elected principal of the Saxe-Gotha (Red Bank) Elementary School in Lexington, SC. In 1951 he was elected principal of the Great Falls Elementary School, Chester County, and three years later principal of Great Falls High School. After a term of six years he moved to McColl, SC, where he was principal of McColl High School. The following year he was elected superintendent of the Latta Area Schools until his retirement in 1970. In 1970 he also retired from the U.S. Air Corps Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He served as president of the Dillon County Teachers Association for two terms, and he was a member of the SCEA and life member of the National Teachers Association. He was a past Master of Blue Lodge, a Shriner, past member of the Latta Rotary Club, the Lions Club and the Moose Club of Great Falls and the Kiwanis Club at McColl. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
He was a member of the Latta Baptist Church, member of the Board of Deacons and Director of the Baptist Training Union.
Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, 1997, at the Latta Baptist Church with burial in Lake View Cemetery in Lake View, SC.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Taylor Moody.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Jimmy Medlin of Laurinburg, NC; one son, Walter M. Moody, Jr. of the home; two sisters, Kate Culbertson and Ruth Fetner, both of Charleston, SC; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at Kannaday's Funeral Home.
Memorials may be sent to the Latta Baptist Church, 202 N. Marion St., Latta, SC 29565.

Selena C. Camp, 44, of 6400 Fox Hunt Road, died June 27, 1997 at Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, SC.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, June 30, 1997, at the funeral home.
Born February 6, 1953 in Charlotte, she was the daughter of the late Horace Woodrow and Gladys Sells Crump. She was an insurance underwriter.
Survivors include her companion, Jimmy Pressley of Indian Trail, NC; three sisters, Terry Clark and her husband, Jack, of Waxhaw, NC, Lou Ellen Stilwell of Matthews, NC and Annette Shaffer and her husband, Harold, of Charlotte; four nieces, Kelly Lyons, Heather Clark, Robin Stilwell and Michelle Shaffer; and three nephews, Chris Stilwell, Greg Stilwell and Stephen Long.
The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, is serving the family.

Mr. Harry L. Potts, Jr., 76, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at his residence.
A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, he had lived in Charlotte over 20 years. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Nevada. A graduate of the University of Chattanooga, he retired in 1995 from Langer and Associates as an insurance auditor. He was a member of Pineville United Methodist Church, whee he served as president of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth G. Potts; two daughters, Deborah Runyan and Adrin McNabb, both of Chattanooga, TN; a sister, Mildred Ellis of Sarasota, Florida; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter and a grandson.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Pineville United Methodist Church, with members of the Fellowship Class serving as honorary pallbearers. Reverend Dr. Thomas C. Herin will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home, Pineville Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pineville United Methodist Church or Hospice at Charlotte.

Mrs. Rosa Billings Church, 94, formerly of Legion Drive, North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at Wilkes Senior Village.
She was born September 24, 1902 in Wilkes County to Andrew Jackson Billings and Dossie Ann Smoot Billings. In October 1938 she married icon A.M. (Ance) Church, who died in 1992. She was a member of North Wilkesboro First Baptist Church, where she was very active in church affairs and was a member of North Wilkesboro Women's Club and North Wilkesboro Garden Club. She was a former secretary with Wilkes County Agents Office, Sturdivant Life Insurance Company, and later with the Church Lumber Company. She was a graduate of Draughnn's Business College.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Patricia Church of Kings Mountain; one daughter, Mrs. Ken (Ann) Barnes of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Jeff Church of Lincolnton, David Church of Mocksville, Tammy Church of North Wilkesboro, and Andy Barnes and Gregory Barnes, both of Charlotte; and five great-grandchildren, Mindy Church and Leslie Church, both of Roaring River, David Church and Hannah Church, both of Mocksville, and Alec Barnes of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rush Hylton officiating. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the funeral.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Corner of Sixth and D Streets, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Mrs. Bertha Zepmiesal Steadings, 63, of 301 Linville Drive, died Friday, June 27, 1997, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 30, 1997, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, Spartanburg, SC, with Rev. Kenneth Cash officiating. Burial will be in Behelehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Roebuck, SC. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Born in Achim, Germany, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her four sons, Frank Samuel Steadings of Inman, SC, Johnny Dean Steadings of Roebuck, SC, Timothy Ray Steadings of Duncan, SC and Danny J. Steadings of Campobello, SC; one daughter, Patricia Washburn of Concord, NC; three brothers, Freidal Zepmeisal, Willy Zepmeisal and Manfred Zepmeisal, all of Germany; two sisters, Marie Weber and Anna Conrad, both of Germany; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.

Mr. Thomas Howard Brock, Sr., 54, died June 28, 1997.
Funeral service will be 5 p.m. Monday, June 30, 1997, at Westfield Creek Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.
Mr. Brock was born in Cheraw, SC, a son of the late Archie Clyde and Nancy Jane Moore Brock. He was a retired fireman engineer with the Cheraw Fire Department, and a member and deacon of Westfield Creek Baptist Church.
Mr. Brock was preceded in death by a daughter, Tonya Denise Brock.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Cheves Brock of the home; one son, Thomas Howard ``Tommy" Brock, Jr. of the home; two brothers, James Calvin Brock and John Edward Brock, both of Cheraw, SC; foster brother, Jerry Lundy of Patrick, SC; and three sisters, Leona Morris of Cheraw, SC, Elizabeth B. Pierce of Rockingham, NC and Diane B. Allen of Ansonville, NC.
Memorials may be made to Westfield Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, Route 1, Box 447-A, Cheraw, SC 29520.
Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC, is serving the family of Mr. Brock.

Mr. Donald ``Don" Devore, 65, of Charlotte, died after a long illness on Friday, June 27, 1997.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church with Monsignor William Pharr, Celebrant. Entombment will be in the Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, following which the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m.
Mr. Devore was born in Clearwater, SC and served four years in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Devore graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in chemical engineering. He retired from GTE as a Senior Sales Engineer for the chemicals and Metallurgical Division.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; three children, Joseph and wife, Sarah, Karen Acken and husband, Allen, and Thomas; grandchildren, Katie and Kevin Acken and Hannah Devore; sister, Juanita Peterson; and brother, William Devore.
``We loved him dearly, and will miss him greatly."
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC 28210 or Holy Angels Nursery, 6600 Wilkinson Blvd., Belmont, NC 28012.

Mr. Oliver C. ``Rooster" Vaughn, 87, of 1912 Haines Street, died June 25, 1997 at Mercy Hospital.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Steele Creek AME Zion Church with Rev. Charles W. Reid officiating. Burial will be in Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday, June 30, 1997, at Alexander Funeral Home.
He was retired from Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company after 40 years of service.
Survivors include his sons, Mr. Oliver C. Vaughn, Jr., Mr. George Louis Vaughn and Mr. Richard L. Vaughn, all of Charlotte; daughters, Mrs. Margaret V. Dawkins, Mrs. Inez V. Capers and Mrs. Carolyn V. Patterson, all of Charlotte; and 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Alexander Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. David Kenneth Goebel, 35, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at home after a courageous two year battle with cancer.
Memorial services were held on June 24, 1997.
Mr. Goebel was born August 24, 1961 in Effingham, Illinois, son of Thomas A. Goebel and Karol G. Goebel. He grew up in Greensboro, NC and Charlotte, NC, graduating from South Mecklenburg High School Class of 1979; North Carolina School of Journalism with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984; and pursued his education at Loyola University until his illness.
Mr. Goebel was employed by Forum, Inc., an international training consultant management firm where a room has been named in his memory.
David is survived by his parents of Raleigh, NC; his sister, Diane Goebel Marx; brother-in-law, Richard H. Marx, Jr.; niece, Elizabeth and nephew, Thomas, of Matthews; and aunts, uncles and cousins. A brother, Thomas Maxwell Goebel, died in infancy.
Grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell H. Goebel and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Grindle preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to the ``V" Foundation.

Mr. Horace Hamer Pittman,
78, of 1447 Ferncliff Road, passed away Friday, June 27, 1997, at Presbyterian Hospital following complications from surgery.
Mr. Pittman was born in Candor, NC on April 28, 1919, the son of the late William Franklin Pittman and Elizabeth Hamer Pittman. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lillian Margaret Pittman, and his brother, Bruce William Pittman.
Mr. Pittman was a 1937 graduate of the old Central High School. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He was a charter member of Carmel Country Club.
He was a successful commercial real estate developer, having developed various office buildings, shopping centers, restaurants, banks, convenience stores and Reddman Square.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at Harry and Bryant Chapel in the Oaks on Monday, June 30, 1997, with the Reverend Dr. Ray Scott of the Myers Park Presbyterian Church officiating. Private burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Pittman residence, 1447 Ferncliff Road.
Mr. Pittman is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mildred Hoke Pittman; a son, Bryan William Pittman and wife, Kathy; a son, Philip Hoke Pittman and wife, Laurie, of Charlotte; and a daughter, Mickie Pittman Sibley and her husband, David Sibley, of Signal Mountain, TN; and ten grandchildren, Katharine Camden Pittman, William Hoke Pittman, Scot Blanton Pittman, Posey Ann Pittman, Hoke Hamer Pittman, Mattie Bess Pittman and Henry Horace Pittman, all of Charlotte, and Steve Erwin Sibley, David Pittman Sibley and Margaret Louise Sibley, all of Signal Mountain, TN.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Charlotte Country Day John Cook Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund, 1440 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.
