BENNETTSVILLE - Howard Steadman `Bubba' O'Tuel, 52, died August 12, 2000. Funeral is 4 p.m. Tuesday at Antioch United Methodist Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Monday at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home.

Willis, George Lee
BESSEMER CITY - The Rev. George Lee Willis, 75, of 503 East Georgia Ave. died August 12, 2000. He was born in Lincoln County on September 23, 1924. Funeral is 4 p.m. Tuesday at First Wesleyan Church. The Revs. Carroll Brackett, Frank Howard, Jerry Lumston, Jerry Millwood, and Dick Whitener will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at First Wesleyan Family Life Center. The family will receive friends other times at the home of Sue and James Johnson, 201 East Tennessee Ave., Bessemer City.
He was a member of First Wesleyan Church, Bessmer City and was a minister for 38 years. He pastored, built and organized Sunnyside Baptist Church, also he pastored-Roseland Baptist Church, Calvery Baptist Church, New Buffalo Baptist Church, and Stowe Memorial Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sunnyside Baptist Church, 1631 Tryon Courthouse Rd., Bessemer City, NC 28016.

Pallbearers will be Ken Armstrong, Adrian Beam, Odis Biddix, Ted Johnson, Charles Lancaster, Jon Mann and honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Bible Class and other ministries.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Daisy Wright Willis, son, Randy Willis, brother, Rev. Floyd Willis.

Survivors are, wife of 59 years, Lois Dellinger Willis of the home, son and daughter-in-law, Bary and Linda Willis of Bessemer City, daughter and son-in-law, Sue and James Johnson of Bessemer City, sister, Jewell W. Yarbrough of Lincolnton, grandchildren and spouse, Wendy and Chuck Costner, Nikki and Johnnie Braswell, Brooke Willis, Brandon Willis, Brittany, Tara and Preston Willis, great grandchildren, Chase and Allyson Costner, Bailey Willis.

Wilson, Blanche Anderson
BOONE - Mrs. Blanche Anderson Wilson, 88, of Vilas, died August 12, 2000. Funeral is 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Brushy Fork Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Hampton Funeral Service.

Webb, Norma Kern
CANDOR - Mrs. Norma Kern Webb, 49, died Saturday, August 12, 2000. The memorial service is 11 a.m. today at Sardis United Methodist Church. Briggs-Candor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Driggers, Robert L. `Bobby'
CHERAW - Robert L. `Bobby' Driggers, Sr., 67, died Saturday, August 12, 2000. The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, Bennettsville.

Mefford, Frankie Dye
CHESTER - Mrs. Frankie Dye Mefford, 89, of 555 Pineview Lakes, Chester, SC died Friday, August 11, 2000 at Chester County Nursing Center. She was the widow of Hammit C. Mefford.
The funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Chester Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Interment is in Chester Memorial Gardens. Dr. Dwight Pearson will officiate.

She was born in Palestine, West Virginia on July 13, 1911 to the late George Dye and the late Elva Thorn Dye.

She was a retired Private Duty Registered Nurse. She was a graduate of Wert County WV High School and received her nursing degree from St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, WV. She was a member of Chester Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her son, James E. Mefford of the Woodlands, TX; 2 daughters, June Lee Kinkead of Lexington, KY and Betty Jo Erskine of Melborne, FL; two sisters, Norma Harmon of Charleston, WV, Alma Lee Hughes of Huntington, WV; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Chester A.R.P. Church PO Box 174 Chester, SC 29706.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Monday at Barron Funeral Home.

Bailes, Marshall A.
CLOVER - Mr. Marshall A. Bailes, 78, of 865 W. Old Limestone Road, Clover, SC died Saturday, August 12, 2000. He was born July 26, 1922 in York County, SC to the late Samuel Andrew Bailes and the late Cynthia Ann Bryant. Mr. Bailes was a lifetime member and past Trustee of kings Mountain Chapel Untied Methodist Church. He was co-owner of Bailes Brothers' Construction Co. and prior to that he was a farmer and peach grower.
Survivors are wife of 47 years, Mary Black Bailes of the home; five daughters, Vickie B. Wyant, Clover, SC, Barbara B. Shillinglaw, York, SC, Cindy B. Love, Clover, SC, Melanie B. Neil, Clover, SC, Bonnie B. Meche, Fort Mill, SC; one son, Marshall A. Bailes, Jr., Clover, SC, two sisters, Jessie Adama, York, SC and Annie Howell, Rock Hill, SC; 12 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2000 at Kings Mountain Chapel United Methodist CHurch, conducted by the Rev. Paul Ballard and the Rev. Eddie Usher. Interment will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Sunday night at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Kings Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church New Building Fund, 2040 Hwy. 161, York, SC 29745 or Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Caldwell, Ervia Jenolia
CONCORD - Mrs. Ervia Jenolia Caldwell, 84, of Avante Nursing Home, Concord, died August 11, 2000. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethesda AME Zion Church, Mooresville by the Rev. Anthony Cannon. Burial will be in Bethesda AME Zion Church Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The family headquarters is at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Janet Griffin, 36 Selma Dr., Mooresville, NC.
Mrs. Caldwell was the daughter of Mr. Wood Graham and Mrs. Nancy Campbell Graham born on December 21, 1915 in Cabarrus County. She was a domestic worker and was a part of the Missionary Society, Southern Voices Choir, and Mass Choir.

The body will lie in state from 12-1pm prior to the service.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Mr. Woodrow Wilson Caldwell. She is survived by her 2 sons, Mr. Robert Caldwell and Mr. Clifton Graham both of Charlotte, NC; 3 daughters, Mrs. Joyce Garris of Charlotte, NC; Mrs. Nancy Cross and Mrs. Janet Griffin both of Mooresville, NC; one sister, Mrs. Orene Maxwell of Statesville, NC and one brother, Mr. WIllie Graham of Statesville, NC; 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Phillips, Bethany Marie
DALLAS - Miss Bethany Marie Phillips, infant, of 331 Dallas/Bessemer City Hwy., Dallas, died August 10, 2000. She was born in Gaston County, NC, to Mark Anthony Phillips and Jody Erin Lyons.
She is survived by her parents, a sister, Tiffany Phillips, maternal grandparents, Margaret J. and Joseph D. Lyons, paternal grandparents, Ken and barb Phillips, maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Scott, aunts, Stephanie Lyons, Brianna Simmmons, Coretta Browing, Tonya Kiser, Anna Kiser, uncles, David Lyons, John Lyons, Kenny Phillips, several cousins.

The funeral service will be 5 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2000 at The Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home.

Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia, is serving the family of Miss Phillips.

Sumlin, Jospeh William `Willie'
DYSARTSVILLE - Jospeh William `Willie' Sumlin, 82, died August 12, 2000. Funeral is 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 15 in Westmoreland Chapel. Visitation is 6-8 pm Monday at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

Turner, Mary Wells
EMERALD ISLE - Mary Wells Turner, 76, of Emerald Isle died August 12, 2000.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Emerald Isle Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Finch officiating.

Preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Turner Sonner and brother David A. Wells; she is survived by her husband, James W. Turner; Daughters, Lark Turner MacPhail of Winnetka, Illinois and Jamie Turner Burke of Oakton, Virginia; sons-in-law, Brian Sonner, Andrew MacPhail and Thomas Burke; and grandchildren John P. Sonner, J. Colin Sonner, W. Reed MacPhail, Drew H. MacPhail, T. Owen Burke, Caitlin W. BUrke and Mary E. Burke as well as a sister, Barbara W. Taylor of White Stone, Virginia.

FOREST CITY - Jimmy Lee Downey, 48, died Saturday, August 10, 2000. A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Cool Springs Cemetery.

Walker, Thomas Philip
FOREST CITY - Mr. Thomas Philip Walker, 70, of 136 Knollwood Drive died Saturday August 12, 2000 at the Rutherford hospital. He was born August 26, 1929 in Bostic, North Carolina and was a son of the late Erie E. and Elizabeth Logan Walker, he was a long time employee of The Stonecutter Corp. having retired in 1999 and is at present serving as the Vice Chairman of the Board and is a director of The Stonecutter Corp.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Church Walker of the home, a daughter, Susan W. Kahn and her husband Jordon of Queens, NY, a brother and sister in law, James and Pat Walker and their children of Jacksonville, FL, a sister Mildred Adams and her son of Raleigh, NC.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday August 15, 2000 in the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Hughes Hobson officiating. Interment will be private for the family in the Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence, 136 Knollwood Drive on Monday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. The family request no flowers be given, and that memorials may be made to the charity of the donors choice. The Padgett and King Mortuary, 227 East Main Street, Forest City, NC is in charge of arrangements for Mr. Walker.

Kaylor, Charles Richard `Charlie'
GASTONIA - Charles Richard `Charlie' Kaylor, Sr., 72, 1321 Signal Street, died Saturday, August 12, 2000 at his residence. A native of New Orleans, LA, he was the son of the late Nevette Eugene and Nona Allen Kaylor. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Nevette, Elam, and Roger Kaylor. Mr. Kaylor was retired as Executive Directors of the Gastonia Housing Authority. A member of Covenant united Methdist Church, he had served on the Building Committee, the Pastor-Parkish Relatiions Committee, had been chairman of the Administrative Board, and had served as President of the Men's Fellowship. He was a Mason, a member of the Gaston County Shrine Club and the Oasis Temple. He had served on the Boards of the Family Resource Center, teh Salvation Army-Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Battered Spouses Shelter. He was an active volunteer with Crisis Assistance Ministry and the Literacy Council. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Gastonia.
Mr. Kaylor is survived by his wife of fifty one years, Ruby Aldridge Kaylor, a son, Charles `Rick` Kaylor, Jr., of Gastonia;/ a daughtet, Linda K. Harrison of Gastonia; four brother: Ray Kaylor, Gastonia, Joe Kaylor, Gastonia, Rev. Jack Kaylor, Denver, grandchildren and spouses: Kristy and Greg McBryde, Cherryville, Amy and Ken Aldridge of Charlotte, Michelle and Philip D'Angelo of Kings Mountain, and Charles Walter `Chuck' Kaylor of Cornelius; four great grandchildren: Laura Delaney McBryde, Emily Grier McBryde and Amanda Elizabeth McBryde all of Cherryville, Kristy Sue Aldridge of Charlotte.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. David Mason, assisted by the Rev. Charles Halipilas, at Covenant United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Tusday, August 15, 2000. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receieve friends at McLean Funeral Directors Monday, August 14, 2000 from 7:00-8:30 and at other times at the home.

Serving as pallbeares will be nephews: Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rotary Club of Gastonia.

Memorials may be made to Covenant United Methodist Church, 801 W. Franklin Avenue, Gastonia, NC 28052. Or to Hospice of Gaston County PO Box 3984 Gastonia, NC 28053.

Laine, William John
GASTONIA - Mr. William John Laine, 78, died August 13, 2000 at Century Care of Gastonia. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Carothers Funeral Home of Gastonia.

Williams, James
GASTONIA - James Williams, 67, died Sunday, August 13, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home, Southside Chapel. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Strange, Sue Newton
GROVER - Mrs. Sue Newton Strange, 89, of 373 Roseborough Road, died August 12, 2000. She was born September 9, 1910 to the late Dock Eli Newton and the late Mary Ann Starnes Newton. She was a homemaker and attended Long Shoals baptist Church in Lincolnton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hugh B. Strange, sons, Jerry Lee strange and J.B. Strange, daughters, Mary Sue Ramsey and Marie Price.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Jackie Strange of Cleveland, Ohio, Jim and Janice Strange of Grover, Dillard and Mylinda Strange of Shelby, James and Rita Strange of Rutherfordton, Bobby and Maebelle Strange of kings Mountain, Billy and Helen Strange of Boiling Springs, daughter, Ruby Peeler of Grover along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Paul Williams will officiate. Burial. will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Visitation is 6:30-8:00, Monday at Stamey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
