Perkins, James Stanley
HICKORY - Mr. James Stanley Perkins, 64, died August 12, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Hickory Funeral Home.

Hewitt, Edward Woodrow
KANNAPOLIS - Mr. Edward Woodrow Hewitt, Sr., 84, of 1024 NE 7th St., Ocala, Florida and former resident of Kannapolis, died August 12, 2000. The graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2000. The Rev. Rusty Inman will officiate. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Park. The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis.
Mr. Hewitt was born on January 27, 1916 in Kannapolis to the late Carlos Hewitt and Gettus Wilson Hewitt. He was an entrepreneur in several businesses.

Mr. Hewitt was a member of the Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shirne Club, Disabled American Veteran; Lions Club; all of Kannapolis. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Inez Jones Hewitt, who died August 17, 1980. He is survived by his two sons, Edward W. Hewitt, Jr of Ocala, FL; and Terry L. Hewitt of Deltona, FL; daughter, Donna Hewitt Davis of Silver Spings, FL; sister, Mrs. Beatrice Hall of Kannapolis, NC; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be donated to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 928, Concord, NC 28026-0928 in memory of Mr. Hewitt.

Evans, Mildred Steele
LANCASTER - Mrs. Mildred Steele Evans, 88, died Saturday afternoon, August 12, 2000 at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill where she was a resident. She was born September 14, 1911 in Lancaster County, the daughter of the late Mr. Judson Steele and Mrs. Minnie Morris Steele. Mrs. Evans was twice married, first to the late Mr. Edward B. Cooper and then to the late Mr. Otis Odett Evans. Mrs. Evans was a retired Springs Industries Employee and retired Owner and Operator of Kiddie Korner Nursery, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Evans is survived by one step-son Mr. Fred B. Cooper and his wife Nell of Lancaster, 1 sister, Mrs. Sara McCoy of Orangeburg, SC, 2 grandchildren, Ms. Susan Cooper Brundick of Maryland, and Ms. Lynn Tindall of Lancaster, and 1 great grandson, Graham Tindall.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Evans will be 4:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, August 15, 2000 at Calvary Baptist Church by Dr. Gene Lockaby burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The family of Mrs. Evans suggested in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Lancaster Council on Aging, 300-A West Gay Street, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 is in charge of arrangements.

Miles, Maggie Taylor
LANCASTER - Mrs. Maggie Taylor Miles, 93, passed away Saturday morning August 12 at White Oak Manor in Lancaster. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a son of the late John Malcolm and Annie Jordan Taylor and the wife of the late Douglas H. Miles. Mrs. Miles was a homemaker and a member of Senior Citizens and Glenwood Heights Baptist Church.
Mrs. Miles is survived by two sons; Mr. Charles T. Miles and Mr. Harold L. Miles both of Lancaster; one daughter Mrs. Mildred F. Pigg of Kershaw a brother Mr. Floyd Taylor of Kannapolis, NC; four grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Glenwood Heights Baptist Church by the Rev. N.J. Neely and the Rev. Marty Cox. Burial will follow in the Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC.

The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Monday evening.

Memorials may be made to the Glenwood Heights Baptist Church, 600 Nichols Road Lancaster and New Life Freewill Baptist Church 1622 Springdell Road Lancaster.

Mahaffey Funeral is serving the Miles family.

Jenrette, Ruth Elizabeth Moore
LAURINBURG - Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Moore Jenrette, 86, died August 12, 2000. Graveside service is 2 p.. Wednesday at Hillside Memorial Park. McDouglad Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.

Philip Hudson Liles

Laurinburg, NC

Mr. Philip Hudson Liles, 83, of 820 Atkinson St. died Tuesday, November 2, at his home.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Laurel Hill United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Tom Denny. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Anderson “Dot” Liles; a son, Jim Liles and his wife, Deb, of Laurinburg; a daughter, Tish Patterson and her husband, Charles, of Laurinburg; his twin sister, Mary Liles of Gibson, a sister Annie Arnold of Houston, TX; 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Born April 17, 1916 in Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Ebbie and Annie Miller Liles. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. Philip was also a member of American Legion Post #48, Laurel Hill Lions Club, was a district officer for Lions Club International, a member of the Growing Friendships Club, and an officer for the Laurel Hill Fire Department. He was also a former member of the Scotland County Zoning Board and the Elections Board. An active church member, he served as a chairman of the administrative board and was a former trustee. He was retired from Charles Craft.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.

Freddie George Joseph, Sr.

Laurinburg, NC

Mr. Freddie George Joseph, 90, of 710 Frederick Ave. died Wednesday, October 27, at his home.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church officiated by Father Kevin Fahey. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery with Ken Stone, Robert Thrush, Allen Assef, Manuel Assef, Richard Joseph, and Rusty George serving as pallbearers.

He is survived by his wife, Julia George Joseph; a son, Freddie Joseph, Jr. of Angier; three daughters, Kathy Lytch of Laurinburg, Judy Andrews of Garner, and Freda Davis of Hickory; four grandchildren, Chris Davis of Hickory; Mary K. Lytch of Laurinburg, Andy Andrews of Garner, and Trey Joseph of Angier. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Joseph and a grandson, Jamie Lytch.

Born June 22, 1909 in Wilmington, he was a son of the late Abraham and Frocina Essey Joseph. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and the Rhineland, and received the Purple Heart in 1943. He was a charter member of VFW Post 2008 and was the retired owner and operator of Scotland Welding Shop.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.

Visitation will be 7 – 9 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Ervin Gordon Adcock

Laurinburg, NC

Mr. Ervin Gordon Adcock, 64, died Friday, October 22, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Marshville.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel with Rev. Sandy Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Born July 19, 1935 in Hoke County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Lois Gordon Adcock. He was a Manager for Buck Stanton’s Texaco and Exxon stations, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the VFW and St. John’s United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one daughter; Terri A. Griffin of Marshville, one brother; Harry Adcock of Laurinburg and three grandchildren; Alyss Nicole Baucom, Katie Marie Baucom and John Calvin Baucom II.

The family will be receiving friends from 7 to 9 PM Sunday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Robert Carroll Thames

Laurinburg, NC

Mr. Robert Carroll Thames, 56, of 206 Maple Street died Thursday, October 21, at his home.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium Chapel with Rev. Johnny King and Rev. Odell Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow at Rogers Cemetery in McColl, SC.

Born March 17, 1943 in McColl SC, he is a son of the late Robert B. Thames. He was a truck driver for McDonald Brothers Building Supply.

He is survived by his mother; Nellie P. Thames of Laurinburg, his wife; Geneva Thames of the home, four daughters; Peggy Ann Woods of Laurel Hill, Christine Thames Locklear of McColl, SC, Donna Thames O’Neal of Gibson and Felisa Elaine Thames of Rockingham, two brothers; Billy Wayne Thames of Fountain Inn, SC and James Thames of Rowland, six grandchildren.

The family will be receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Mrs. Edith E. Grooms

Laurel Hill, NC

Mrs. Edith E. Grooms, 75, of 17021 Lauder Street, died Wednesday morning, October 20, at her home.

Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Friday at Hillside Memorial Park officiated by Rev. Alexander B. “Sandy” Williams.

Born February 27, 1924 in Scotland County, she was the daughter of the late Spaffard and Ola Walters English. A retired employee with Waverly Mills where she worked for 25 years, she was a former member of the Old Hundred Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Willie H. Grooms of the home; a son Willie H. Grooms, Jr. of Gibson; two daughters, Patsy G. Peele of Laurinburg and Patty Gail Grooms of Laurel Hill. Two grandchildren, Susan Wagner and Robin Moser, three great grandchildren, Tahler Wagner, Logan Wagner and Baileigh Moser also survive her.

The family will be receiving friends from 7 to 9 PM Thursday at McDougald Funeral Home in Laurel Hill.

Johnsie Graham Hearn

Laurinburg, NC

Mrs. Johnsie Amanda Graham Hearn, 84, of 416 West Blvd. Died Monday, October 11, at Duke University Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Wil I. Jackson. Burial will follow in Beaver Dam Cemetery in McColl.

She is survived a son, Dr. Donald Hearn of Gainesville, FL; two daughters, Diane Brantley of Clayton and Debbie Coffield of Matthews; a sister, Elizabeth Hendren of Raleigh; nine grandchildren, Susan Hearn, Larry Brantley, Neal Brantley, Jr., Johnette Brantley, James Brantley, Vance Brantley, Margaret Vaughan, Timothy Coffield, and Ryan Coffield; four great grandchildren, Eric Narron, Douglas McCormac, III, Matison Hearn ‘Desautels, and Gabriel Hearn ‘Desautels.

Born October 11, 1915 in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late John C. and Betty Snipes Graham and widow of the late Earl Hearn. She retired as cafeteria manager at Scotland High School. Johnsie was also a member of the Young at Heart, Silver Scots, Scotland County Extension Homemakers, and the JOY club at the First United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 101 W. Church St., Laurinburg, NC 28352 or Boys and Girls Home of NC, PO Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Edward Hayse Johnston

Wagram, NC

Mr. Edward Hayse Johnston, 82, of 16221 Lake Shore Dr., Deercroft died Sunday, October 10, at his home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spring Hill Cemetery officiated by the Revs. Jim Johns and Harry Clark.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Gibson Johnston; a son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Penny Johnston of Laurinburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Bill McIllwain of Wagram; a sister, Doris Lineberger of Lincolnton; a sister-in-law, Doris Johnston of Wagram; 5 grandchildren.

Born June 11, 1917 in Richmond, VA, he was a son of the late John Harry and Ethel Spurrier Johnston. He was a US Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Johnston was a retired cotton broker and was the co-owner and operator of Farmers Bonded Warehouses, Johnston Brothers, Inc., and Deercroft, Inc. He was a former mayor, council member, and volunteer fireman for Wagram.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.
