Shines, Charles Thomas
GASTONIA - Charles Thomas Shines, Sr., 61, died August 4, 2000. Funeral 2:30pm Sunday at Catawba Heights Wesleyan Church, Belmont. Burial, Gaston Mem. Park. Vstn 7-9pm tonight at Greene Funeral Svc (S.side Chapel).

Mastroianni, Daphine Doster
GIBSON - Daphine Doster Mastroianni, a native of Gibson, NC, died August 3, 2000 in Charlotte, NC. She was 93.

A graveside service will be held in the old Gibson Cemetery at (4 PM on Sunday, August 6th, 2000). Mrs. Mastroianni received a degree in music from N.C. College for Women (now UNCG) in 1927. She taught piano and public school music for six years in Cherryville and Kings Mountain, NC. In Cherryville she organized the first Boys Glee Club in Kings Mountain and organized the High School Band.

In 1936 Mrs. Mastroianni graduated from The Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing and began her nursing career as a surgical nurse at Hopkins and in Berea College Hospital in Kentucky.

In 1942 she joined the Army Nurse Corps and served as surgical nurse with the 18th General Hospital in the Asiatic Pacific area for four years. After receiving a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 1947, she joined the U.S. Public Health Service where she was employed until she retired in 1970. In the position of nursing consultant she was assigned to three Regional Offices: Washington, D.C., Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL. During her career with the USPHS - she was assigned to the state of Arkansas State to develop an accredited program for nurses assigned to county health departments, and to the University of Arkansas to help establish a baccalaureate program for nurses.

Since 1982 Mrs. Mastroianni has been a resident at Aldersgate, formerly of (The Methodist Home) in Charlotte, NC. In 1992 she married icon Joseph Mastroianni. They shared a cottage at Epworth Place until he passed away in 1999.

A Presbyterian, she has always been active in and supported her church, Third Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, NC.

Mrs. Mastroianni is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the Late Ethel Doster Webb of Gibson, NC, James E. Doster of Hemingway, SC, Pat Doster Wands of Fayetteville, NC and Jerry C. Doster of Pinehurst, NC.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate Chapel on Saturday, August 12th, 2000.

Harding, Susie Purvis
HAMLET - Mrs. Susie Purvis Harding, 91, died August 4, 2000. Funeral 3pm Sunday at Highland Pine Free Will Bapt. Ch. Interment, Richmond Mem. Park. Visitation 6-8pm tonight at Marks Funeral Home.

Ardrey, Donald Lewis
HICKORY - Mr. Donald Lewis Ardrey, age 60 of #12 9th Ave., NW, Hickory, NC died Thursday, August 3, 2000.

Mr. Ardrey was born on October 21, 1939 in Perry Co., Ohio to the late Stanley and Antionette Reiber Ardrey. He was manager of an Agriculture Business.

A memorial service for Mr. Ardrey will be held at a later date in Ohio.

Survivors include: wife, Nancy M. Ardrey of the home; three sons, Todd D. Ardrey of Loudonville, OH, Tyle L. Ardrey of Cherryville, NC, Trent C. Ardrey of Medina, OH; four brothers, Verne Ardrey of Thornville, OH, Carl Ardrey of Rushville, OH; two sisters, Wilma Hugus of Wyoming, Rose Stone of Thornville, OH; five grandchildren, Tyler, Tayler, Samantha, Hunter and Bailey Ardrey.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Betty Potts, 2638 Lee Lawing Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Wright, Alfred
HICKORY - Rev. Alfred Wright, of 431 1st. St., S.E., Hickory, NC, died August 2, 2000 at N.C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC.

Funeral services will be held 4 PM, Monday, August 7, 2000 at Morning Star First Baptist Church, with Rev. Webster E. Lytle officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 PM Sunday evening at the church.

Rev. Wright was a native of Cleveland Co., NC, born May 17, 1931 to the late Dili & Susie Parks Wright. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. His education includes Job Training, Hickory, NC; Catawba Valley Technical College (CVTC), Hickory, NC; Shaw University, Raleigh, NC; Seminary Extension, Nashville, TN; Evangelical Teachers Training Association (ETTA), Hickory, NC; Piedmont Bible School, Hickory, NC; North Carolina A&T; State University, Greensboro, NC; and Ridgeview High School, Hickory, NC.

He was employed as the Director of Purchasing, Bryant Supply Incorporated, Hickory, NC, retiring after 40 years of service; Associate Pastor, Morning Star First Baptist Church, Hickory, NC; 1st Vice Moderator, The Mountain & Catawba Missionary Baptist Association; Pastor, Mount Zion Baptist Church, Hickory, NC; and Pastor, New Hope Baptist Church, Vale, NC.

He was Secretary-Treasurer of the Hickory Ministerial Alliance; Board member of Inter-Faith Housing Development Corporation; Family and community Enrichment Development Corporation; Family and Community Enrichment Development Center; Catawba County Social Services; Historic Preservation Commission; Citizen's Advisory Committee; Catawba County Maternal and Child Health Advisory Committee; Catawba County Foster Parent Advisory Committee; Missionary Baptist Association; and Life Member of the NAACP.

His previous Board membership includes Public Radio Advisory Committee, Raleigh, NC; 3rd Vice President of the NAACP; Cooperative Christian Ministry, Hickory, NC; and Flynn Christian Fellowship Home, Hickory, NC.

He was also a member of St. James Lodge #20 Free & Accepted Ancient York Rite Masons.

Surviving Mr. Wright are his wife, Agnes Thomas Wright, of the home; three sons, Alfred James Wright of Hickory, NC, Abraham P. Wright of Little Rock, Ark., Karl Thomas of Hickory, NC; daughter-in-law, Helen B. Thomas of Hickory, NC; two daughters, Callie W. Brown of Wicita, KS, Althea Y. Hargrove of Charlotte, NC; son-in-law, Frederick Hargrove of Charlotte, NC; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a number of nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

Davis, Dorothy Byrd
JEFFERSON - Dorothy Byrd Davis, daughter of the late Walter A. and Susie Mungo Byrd, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Lancaster.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Sunday School Class and Senior Citizens.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, August 7, 2000 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with burial following at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Clarence Allen will be officiating.

Dorothy was the wife of the late James Edward Davis and sister of the late Joseph Cephie Byrd. She is survived by her sons Mr. Randy B. Davis of Irmo, South Carolina, Mr. James Michael Davis of Bettsville, Ohio, Mr. Harvey B. Davis of Houston, Texas, Mr. Joseph B. Davis of Streetsboro, Ohio; her daughter, Mrs. John (Pamela) Wooten of Anchorage, Alaska; her brothers Mr. William A. Byrd of Union, Mr. Miller J. Byrd of Lancaster, Mr. Robert "Bobby" Byrd of Kershaw, Mr. Walter Byrd, Jr. of Lancaster, Mr. Fred Byrd of Kershaw; her sisters Mrs. Rufus (Pauline) Shealy of Columbia, Mrs. Helen Byrd Knight of Lancaster, Ms. Mattie Lee Byrd of Columbia; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and other times in the home at 5474 Mt. Pisgah Road, in Jefferson.

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC 29718.

Shoe, Minnie (Ludena) Stallings
KANNAPOLIS - Mrs. Minnie (Ludena) Stallings Shoe, 76, died August 4, 2000. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant is serving the Shoe family.

Berry, Mary Louise Sanders
LAKE WYLIE - Mrs. Mary Louise Sanders Berry, 74, of 5850 Fairview Street, Lake Wylie, SC, died August 3, 2000 at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC.

Funeral services will be held 3 PM, August 6, 2000 at Liberty Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, Lake Wylie, SC, with Reverend Terrence Jones officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 PM until 3:00 PM Sunday at the church, prior to the service.

Mrs. Berry was a native of York Co., SC. She was a cafeteria worker.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Louise Berry of Lake Wylie, SC, Brenda McClure of Irmo, SC, Addie Ruth Carothers of Clover, SC; sons, Robert Clyde Berry, Jr. of Camdridge, NE, Willie Lee Berry of Lake Wylie, SC, Michael Berry of Gastonia, NC, John David Berry of Chalmette, LA; sisters, Lizzie Smith of Charlotte, NC, Catherine Sanders of Gastonia, NC, Ida Mae Brown of Michigan; brothers, Alexander Sanders and Arthur Sanders, both of Gastonia, NC, Samuel Sanders of Lake Wylie, SC.

Catoe, Carole Ann Phelps
LANCASTER - Mrs. Carole Ann Phelps Catoe, 53, of 1749 Rosewood Lane, Lancaster died Thursday, August 3, 2000 in Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was a daughter of Walter Phelps and Nora J. Phelps Emery. She was a homemaker, a loving wife and mother who was also a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where she had received her BS degree as Registered Records Administrator. She was self-employed as a Medical Records Administrator and Consultant, a member of American Medical Records Association, Chapter L Red Rose Riders and Second Baptist Church.

Mrs. Catoe is survived by her husband, Samuel Catoe, Jr. of Lancaster; 5 daughters, Barbara Ann Batten of Prince George, VA, Pamela Renee Elliott of Jacksonville, NC, Mary Beth Brown of O'Fallon, MO, Crystal Lynn Clarke of Lancaster and Jacqueline Renee Adkins of Rock Hill; 2 sons, Samuel Catoe, III of Columbia and John Franklin Bledsoe of Richmond, VA; her mother, Mrs. Nora J. Emery of Richmond, VA; and her father, Rev. Walter Phelps of Abbington, VA; 2 sisters, Barbara Davis and Kay Sirles of Virginia; 6 brothers, Seth Phelps, Brian Phelps, Eugene Phelps, Tim Emery, Carl Emery and Kenneth Emery, all of Virginia; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 Sunday afternoon from Second Baptist Church by Dr. James D. Spencer, III and Rev. Larry Helm. Interment will be in Lancaster Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from from 6:00 until 8:00 Saturday evening. Memorial may be made to Second Baptist Church, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.
