Pigg, Mamie Reid
MIDLAND - Mrs. Mamie Reid Pigg, 83, of 12270 Bethel Church Road, Midland, NC, died Friday, August 4, 2000 at Transitional Health Services, Kannapolis, NC.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, August 7, 2000 at Clear Creek Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC, with Rev. Dennis Benton and Rev. Reece Riegin officiating. Interment will be in Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 7 PM to 9 PM Sunday at Hartsell Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pigg was a native of Stanly County, NC, born October 25, 1916 to the late Clarence Reid and Anna Fisher Reid. She was a self-employed Beautician and member of Clear Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors are her husband, Oakley G. Pigg, of the home; sons, Buddy Pigg and Tim Pigg, both of Lincolnton, NC; brothers, Billy Reid, Joe Reid and Earl Reid, all of Kannapolis, NC; sisters, Mrs. Blanche Riddle of Kannapolis, NC, Mrs. Geraldine Lackey of China Grove, NC; 4 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

The family will be at 12270 Bethel Church Road, Midland, NC.

Memorials may be made to: The Bryan Bailey Pigg Memorial Fund, c/o Community Foundation of Gaston County, PO Box 123, Gastonia, NC 28053. (Payable to Community Foundation).

Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland, NC is serving the family of Mrs. Pigg.

Craig, Roy Steve
MT. HOLLY - Mr. Roy Steve Craig, age 60 of 105 Russell Lane died Friday, August 4, 2000 at his residence. He was born in Lincoln County, son of Ruby Carpenter Craig and the late Rhonda Craig. He was a retired contract painter. Mr. Craig is survived by his wife Hazel Walker Craig, his Mother Ruby Craig of Lincolnton; 1 son Steve Dennis of Lincoln County; 5 step sones James Dennis of Iron Station, Russell Wright of Dallas, Cecil Wright of Mt. Holly, Charles Wright of Cramerton, and Michael Wright of Belmont; 1 step daughter Joyce Meeler of Belmont; 2 brothers Walter Craig of Maiden and Harold Craig of Gastonia; 2 sisters Mardiase Stallings of Iron Station and Carol Seigle of Lincolnton; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday, August 7, 2000 in The Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mt. Holly. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28053.

Arrangements for Mr. Craig are in the care of Woodlawn Funeral Home, Mt. Holly.

Faggett, Harry Lee
ORANGEBURG - Dr. Harry Lee Faggett, Sr., age 89 of 2457 Hickory Dr., NE, departed this life Tuesday, August 1, 2000 after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 5, 2000 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Orangeburg, S.C. with The Very Rev. M. Dow Sanderson officiating. Burial will be in Belleville Memorial Gardens.

Dr. Harry Lee Faggett BS, MA, PhD. was a retired professor of English at South Carolina State College. He was an accomplished musician, poet, author and Renaissance man of wide educational experience.

Born 10 January 1911, in Greensboro, N.C., son of the late Walter Faggett and Lucy Clymer Faggett. Dr. Faggett received his Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton Institute, VA and earned his Masters of Arts and Doctrine of Philosophy degrees from Boston University, MA, becoming the first Afro-American to receive a PhD. in English Literature from Boston University in 1947. His thesis was entitled "Shakespearean Drama in the Elizabethan Era and focused on Blacks and other minorities in Shakespheare England.

Dr. Faggett has held coaching and teaching positions at Rideview High School, Hickory, NC, North Carolina A&T; University, Greensboro, NC, Hampton Institute, VA, Southern University, LA, Prairie View A&M; University, TX, Jackson State University, MS., Queens College, NY, Florida A&M; University, FL, Morgan State University, MD, Central State University, OH, and South Carolina State University, SC.

Dr. Faggett has published several articles in education journals and is the author of a study of Minority Groups in Shakespeare's England. One monograph on "The Instructional Assurance of the Students' Right to Write" has been translated in 55 languages. Dr. Faggett's published books includes: "Lines to A Little Lady; Blacks and Other Minorities in Shakespeare's England; Best Short Stories by Afro-American Writers; Tales of Black Robin and Across the Tracks and Home Again/All about Gertie.

Dr. Faggett was a member of the Masons and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and a Lay Reader at St. Paul Episcopal Churh, Orangeburg, SC.

Dr. Faggett was the Father of ten children, Frances, Walter II, Jacqueline, Harry Jr., Brian, Jocelyn, Kathy, Anthony, Heather, and Barry. He is survived by thirteen grandchildren.

Lawrence, John F. (Jim)
PINEHURST - Mr. John F. (Jim) Lawrence, age 72, a former resident of Wilmington and Charlotte, NC died at his home in Pinehurst on Thursday, August 3, 2000 after a year-long battle with cancer.

He was born on November 4, 1927 in Hanover, PA to the late George F. and Esther Bixler Lawrence.

Mr. Lawrence was the founder and President of Beacon Brokers, Inc., a state wide food brokerage company based in Charlotte, NC. He was a member of the North Carolina Food Dealers Association. He was a veteran of WW2 having served in the U.S. Navy.

A Memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held at 11;00 AM, Tuesday, August 8, 2000 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst, NC with Father Robert Diegelman officiating.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Joan Grady Lawrence; his son, Kevin J. Lawrence and his wife, Barbara of Winston-Salem, NC; his daughter, Linda L. Turza of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Mary L. Little of Hanover, PA; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blessed Juan Diego Mission, c/o Sacred Heart Catholic Church, PO Box 1768, Pinehurst, NC 28370.

Boles Funeral Home, Pinehurst is serving the Lawrence family.

ROCK HILL - Doris McIntyre Broome, 71, died August 4. There wil be a private service. Greene funeral home is handling arrangements.

McCollum, Ollie Price H.
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ollie Price H. McCollum, 66, died August 2. The funeral was Friday, 2pm, at Elgin Baptist Church, interment at Forest Hills Cemetery. Greene Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sims, William `Bill` Martin
ROCK HILL - William `Bill` Martin Sims, Sr., 57, died August 4. Graveside Services will be held Sunday, 3pm, at Grandview Memorial Park. Visitation is Saturday, 7-9pm, at Bass Funeral Home; whose also handling arrangements.

McLaunin, Sallie Jane Bennett
ROCKINGHAM - Sallie Jane Bennett McLaunin, 82, died August 2. The funeral is Sunday, 2pm, at McEachem Funeral Home, burial is in North Side Cemetery. Visitation is Saturday, 5-6pm, at McEachem Funeral home, also in charge.

Walker, Lonnie Junior
ROCKINGHAM - Lonnie Junior Walker, 73, died August 3. The funeral is Sunday, 4pm, at Carter Colonial Chapel. Visitation is 7-8:30pm at the Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham. Arrangements by Carter Funeral Home.

Rusher, Paul
ROCKWELL - Paul Rusher, 68, died August 2. A memorial service is Sunday, 4pm, at James C. Lyerly Chapel in Salisbury. Mr. Rusher will be cremated, and there are no visitation times. Arrangements by Lyerly Funeral Home.

Cook, Billie R.
SALISBURY - Mr. Billie R. Cook, 69, died Thursday, August 3, 2000 at his home. Graveside service 11 AM Monday, National Cemetery. Visitation 9:30-10:30 AM Monday. Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove, NC.

Martin, Myrtle Virginia
SALISBURY - Myrtle Virginia Martin, 87, died August 3. The funeral is Sunday, 3pm, at Southside Baptist Church, burial is in Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Visitation is Saturday, 7-9pm, at Summersett Funeral Home, also in charge.

Schenk, Arnold Joseph
SALISBURY - Arnold Joseph Schenk, 78, died August 3. The funeral is Saturday, 2pm, at Salem Lutheran Church, burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation was Friday at Lyerly Funeral Home, also handling arrangements.

SPINDALE - Rev. Ellis W. Daves, age 73, died Thurs., Aug. 3, 2000. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Mon., Aug. 7, 2000 Padgett & King Mortuary. Interment at Sunset Mem. Pk. Visitation 7-9 PM Sunday at Padgett & King Mortuary, Forest City.

Fletcher, Karan Theresa Zissette
STANLEY - Karan Theresa Zissette Fletcher, 42, died August 2. The funeral is Saturday, 11am, in Warlick Funeral Home Chapel, burial is Saturday, 3pm, at Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation was Friday at Warlick Funeral Home, also in charge.

Crouch, Ted Kenneth
TAYLORSVILLE - Ted Kenneth Crouch, 67, died August 3, 2000. A memorial service will be Saturday, August 12th at 2pm from Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, Hickory. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family.

Burris, Bradford Wayne
TROY - Rev. Bradford Wayne Burris, age 47 of 622 River Rd., Mt. Gilead, N.C. died Thursday, August 3, 2000.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Sweet Home Church Rd., Albemarle, NC with Rev. Toney Parson and Rev. Charles Bowers officiating. Burial at Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery, 2889 River Rd., Troy, N.C.

Mr. Burris was a member and former pastor of Prospect Baptist Church; he was a member of the Uwharrie Bass Club and a sub-contractor.

He is survived by his wife Ann Moore Burris of the home; daughters Brandy Burris, Stacey Burris, both of the home; mother Opal Burris of Mt. Gilead, NC; brother Gary Burris of Mt. Gilead, NC; sisters Janell Cranford of Troy, NC, Elaine Thomas of Polkton, NC, Lois Morgan of Troy, NC, JudyVanhoy of Troy, NC, Sue Griffin of Locust, NC and Jan Abraham of Gainesville, GA.

Visitation is 7:00-9:00 PM Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy.

Quam, Freida Ogburn
VIENNA, VA - Freida Ogburn Quam, 82, of Vienna, VA, formerly of Jefferson, SC, died August 4, 2000 at her residence.

A graveside service will be held 11 AM, Monday, August 7, 2000 at Jefferson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 AM Monday at Sutton Funeral Home, prior to the service.

Mrs. Quam was the daughter of the late Walter & Eva Griffith Ogburn. She was an elementary school teacher with a degree from Winthrop University.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Quam, of the home; and her son, Gary Quam of Vienna, VA.

Sutton Funeral Home is serving the Quam family.

Prine, Marion Claire
WALTERBORO - Marion Claire Prine, 77, died August 2. The funeral is Saturday, 11am, at Edgewood Baptist Church, interment with Masonic Rites will be in Ackerman Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, 6-9pm. Herndon & Sons is in charge.

Keziah, Terry Lee
WAXHAW - Mr. Terry Lee Keziah, 45, died August 4, 2000. Funeral 3pm Sunday at Turner Presbyterian Church. Burial in church cemetery. Vstn Sunday following service in church fellowship hall. Gordon Funeral Service in charge.

Lowery, Johnny
WAXHAW - Mr. Johnny Lowery, 29, died Friday, August 4, 2000 at Union Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Grier Funeral Service of Monroe is in charge.
