YORK - Rev. John P. Smith, age 80 of 316 Lincoln Road, York, South Carolina died Thursday, August 3, 2000 at Piedmont Medical Center in York County.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Hillcrest Baptist Church, York, SC with Dr. Richard Dillingham officiating. Burial at Hickory Grove Cemetery, Hickory Grove, S.C.

Rev. Smith was born in Richmond County, NC, a son of the late George Smith and Nellie Grant Smith. He was a retired Church of God Minister. He served churches in Society Hill, Greeleyvile, Manning, and Hickory Grove, South Carolina. A WW II veteran, he was a member of the 778 Tank Battalion of the United States Army and a member of the Calvery Tabernacle Church of God in Rock Hill.

He is survived by his wife Inez Cumber smith of York, SC; 2 sons Sam Smith of Gastonia, NC, George Smith of York, SC; 2 daughters, Marilyn Smith Ramsey of Fountain Inn, SC, Stephanie Smith Broach of Mooresville, NC; 1 brother, Mack Smith of Rockingham, NC; and 2 step-sisters, Violet S. Lyles of Statesville, NC; Helen Smith of Wallace, SC; and 5 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM Saturday at Bratton Funeral Home.

Amis, Thomas Pinson
Thomas Pinson Amis, Jr., 77, of Charlotte, died Saturday, August 5, 2000, at 2 a.m. at University Hospital.

Service will be Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Derita Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service and burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord, NC. Officiating eill be Dr. Charles W. Wilson and the Rev. Paul A. Craig, Jr.

The family will receive friends at the Derita Chapel from 7 until 9 p.m. on Monday, August 7, 2000. At other times they will be at the home.

Born February 12, 1923, in Hogansville, (Troup County) Georgia, he was the son of the late Mar Louise Boozer Amis of Marietta, Georgia, and the late Thomas Pinson Amis, Sr., of Newnan, Georgia.

He was educated in Troup County Schools and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He served during World War II and was a Prisoner of War of the Germans and was liberated by the Russians May 5, 1945.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hogansville, GA, Metrolina Chapter of Ex-Pow, American Legion Post #9, and retired from Baker Equipment Engineering Company.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Troutman Amis of the home two sisters, Mrs. Mary Louise Gollahon of Marietta, Ga, and Mrs. Dorothy Brock of Douglasville, GA, and two brothers, Frank J. Amis of Woodstock, GA, and Robert Eugene Amis of Marietta, GA.

Memorials may be made to University City United Methodist Church, 6100 W. Sugar Creek Road and Harris Blvd., Charlotte, NC, 28269.

Bruce, Gavin John
Gavin John Bruce, 52, formerly of Sterling Heights, Michigan, died Saturday, August 5 at his sister's residence. He was born February 2, 1948 in Tarrytown, NY to Charles Dawson Bruce and the late Emma Mary Lamasney Bruce.

Funeral services will be at 12 noon Monday, August 7, at Advent Lutheran Church, 8840 University City Blvd, with Pastors Nancy Kraft and Richard Little officiating.

Mr. Bruce, a native of Tarrytown, NY, was a financial analyst with General Motors in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

In addition to his father, Mr. Bruce is survived by his sister, Mary Lou Kuklentz and her husband Richard of Charlotte, brother Thomas Bruce and his wife Pat of Sun City, Arizona, sister Charliese Eichler and her husband Gene of Charlotte.

Nieces and nephews include Robert Simyon and his wife Caroline, Jeffrey Simyon and his wife Pam, Karen Kuklentz, David Kuklentz, Richard Miller, Lynn Lyons and her husband Bud, Corene Wickenheiser and her husband Matt, Jodi Eichler, Lori Eichler, Keri Holland and her husband Heath, and great-grand nieces and nephews Robbie and Heather Simyon, Carrie and Carli Lyons, Marissa, Kristi and Nikki Miller.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice at Charlotte and many friends at Advent Lutheran Church who provided such loving support during Mr. Bruce's illness.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th, Charlotte, NC 28204 or the Gavin Bruce Memorial Fund at Advent Lutheran Church, 8840 University City Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28213.

Carolina Funeral and Cremation is entrusted.

Causey, Annabel Shepard
Mrs. Annabel Shepard Causey, 92 of the Pines at Davidson died Friday, August 4, 2000 at University Hospital. She was born September 22, 1907 in Trafford, Pennsylvania to the late William H. Shephard and Anna McCall Shephard.

She was a member of Davidson College Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School in various Presbyterian Churches. Mrs. Causey was an avid Bridge Player, wrote poetry, and creative in needlework. She attended Pratt Institute in New York and her husband, Paul F. Causey, attended Davidson College.

Survivors include sons, Paul F. Causey, Jr. and Helga Day of Baldwin, Maryland and William S. Causey and wife, Daphne, of Selden, Long Island, New York; sister, Elizabeth Shepard of the Pines at Davidson; grandchildren, Paul Causey, III, Glen Causey, Margaret Amodemo Auricchio, and Joseph Amodemo.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 in the Lingle Chapel at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John S. Lyles will officiate. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Pines at Davidson Resident Fund, 400 Avinger Lane, Davidson, NC 28036 or Habitat for Humanity, 203 South Street, Davidson, NC 28036.

Mrs. Margaret Clinton, of 1931 Merriview Ct. Apt. 46 died August 5, 2000. Arrangements are incomplete at Alexander Funeral Home.

Griffin, Odell O.
Mr. Odell O. Griffin died August 4, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at New Bethel Church of God in Christ. Visitation is 10-10:55 a.m. August 7, 2000 at the church. A.L. Jinwright Funeral Service is serving the Griffin family.

Holloway, Peggy
Peggy Holloway, of 3601 Griffin St., died August 4, 2000. Arrangements are incomplete at Beasley Funeral Home.

Carl Horn Jr.
Carl Horn Jr., 78, of Charlotte, NC, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born October 21, 1921 in Rutherfordton, NC, son of the late Carl Horn and Freda Warden Horn. He attended Salisbury city schools and graduated from Duke University in 1942. For the next four years, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre, moving from private to captain. He received a law degree from Duke University in 1947.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Johnston Horn, and four children and their spouses: Carl Horn III and Patricia of Charlotte; Claire Horn and Bruce Bodaken of San Francisco, CA; Kathrine H. Garcia and Dr. Jose Garcia of Atlanta, GA; and Thoams E. Horn and Melissa of High Point. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Patrick, Courtney, Brendan, Mary Ellen, Peter, and Kathryn Horn; Conor and Ian Horn Bodaken; Ginny, Jack, Katie, and Kelly Garcia; and Ramsay and Dillon Horn. He was predeceased by his first wife, Frances Emmet Horn.

Mr. Horn practiced law in Charlotte for seven years and in 1954 joined Duke Power Company's Legal Department. He was named General Counsel and elected to the Duke Power Board of Directors in 1959. In 1971, he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer, and in 1975 Chairman of the Board. In 1977, Financial World magazine named Mr. Horn outstanding chief executive of the year in the public utilities industry. Financial World honored him again in 1980, naming him one of the ten outstanding chief executives of major U.S. corprations, and in 1982 the Wall Street Transcript named him the top CEO of the electric utility industry.

His service to various boards and charitable institutions spanned many years: Trustee and Chairman, Independent College Fund of NC; president, NC Citizens Association; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority; Charlotte Memorial Hospital and Medical Center; Chairman, Davidson College Board of Visitors; Greater Charlotte Foundation; Research Triangle Foundation; Southeastern Electric Exchange; NC Council of Management and Development; Edison Electric Institute; Business Roundtable; SC Foundation of Independent Colleges; President's Associates, Duke Univeristy; President, Duke Law Alumni Association; and Trustee, Erskine College. He also served on the boards of J.B. Ivey and Co., Marshall Field Co., Sprint Corporation, Carolina Freight Carriers, and Security Bank and Trust Co. He served as the first Chairman of the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges, received an honorary degree from Catawba College, and also received the 1980 Citation for Outstanding Leadership and Service to the North Carolina Citizens Association.

He was a member of First Presbyteian Church where he served as deacon and elder. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 7, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. William P. Wood and the Reverend Mary Katherine Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Harry and Bryant and following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Television Ministry of First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC 28202; or to Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, 500 E. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28202.

Morris, Anne Gossage
Mrs. Anne Gossage Morris, of Charlotte died Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at Mecklenburg Health Care Center.

Mrs. Morris, originally from Union, New Jersey, lived most of her adult life in Charlotte. Her career interests before beginning her family included the field of Professional bookkeeping. However, her primary concern upon leaving the profession was to be a truly devoted mother and grandmother.

A member of Central Church of God, her life had always been church centered. Those that knew her could testify of her concern for others. She was a true prayer warrior.

She is survived by three daughters; Judy M. Robinson of Charlotte, with whom she made her home for many years; Gail Renfro of Charlotte and Sandy Banks of South Bend, IN; one son; Glenn Morris of Waxhaw; ten grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

The family expresses their appreciation to everyone who extended their love and support during Mrs. Morris' illness. They especially wish to acknowledge the excellent care at Mecklenburg Health Care Center. In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to the Benevolence Fund at Central Church of God, 5301 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270.

Memorial Services for Mrs. Morris will be Tuesday, August 8 at Central Church of God at 1:00 PM with visitation from 11:30 AM until the time of service. Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.

Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home of Matthews.

Rhyne, Henry Carson
Mr. Henry Carson Rhyne, Sr., 86, of Charlotte died Friday, August 4, 2000 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Born January 21, 1914 in Mecklenburg County, NC, Mr. Rhyne was a son of the late Daniel Parks Rhyne and Allie Moody Rhyne. He was a graduate of Berryhill School and attended Rutherford College. Mr. Rhyne was a World War II, US Army veteran, having served in the Hawaiian Islands.

Mr. Rhyne was a lifelong member of Mulberrry Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder, member of Men's Bible Class, and was elected Elder Emeritus. He was a member of Optimist International and West Invester Club. Mr. Rhyne retired from Biggers Brothers after 34 years in sales.

Mr. Rhyne was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1941, Martha Ellen Rhyne, and two brothers, William Moody Rhyne and Daniel Parks Rhyne, Sr.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Coleen McWhirter Rhyne; three children, Dr. James Moody Rhyne and his wife, Anne of Statesville, Rev. Henry Carson Rhyne, Jr. of Richmond, VA, and Janis Rhyne Young and her husband, Ed of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Cherry Rhyne Johnson and her husband, Eddie of Statesville, Jason Parks Rhyne and his wife, Christi of Dallas, TX, Sheldon Todd Rhyne of Washington, DC, Allie Rhyne Young and Abby Thompson Young, both of Charlotte; and two great grandsons, James Rhyne Johnson and Edward Todd Johnson, both of Statesville.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday, August 7 at Mulberry Presbyterian Church, with the Reverends Dr. Roger Mackey and Paul Felker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the church.

The family requests that memorials be made to Mulberry Presbyterian Church, 5600 Tuckaseegee Road, Charlotte, NC 28208.

Salkow, Geoffrey Matthew
Geoffrey Matthew Salkow, 33, was fatally injured July 23 in an automobile accident in Banner Elk, NC.

A memorial service and Mass in celebration of the life of Mr. Salkow of Naples, Fl and Charlotte, NC will take place August 9 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Ann's Church, 475 9th Ave. So., Napels, Fl 34102. There will be a reception immediately following Mass at The Vineyards Country Club, 400 Vineyards Blvd., Napels, FL (9841) 353-1500.

Geoffrey M. Salkow was the founder and C.E.O. of Colonial Capital Management and Colonial Capital International Investments, with offices in Napels, Charlotte, New York City and London, England. Mr. Salkow also served on the Boards of Directors of the Blue Ridge Trust Company and The Trust Co. of the South.

Mr. Salkow was actively involved in many charitable organizations, include the Collier Co. Educational Foundation, The Learning Connection and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Collier Co.

Geoffrey M. Salkow was an honors graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Business Administration where he was an active member of the Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was included in the Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities.

Mr. Salkow is survived by his wife, Brenda of Naples; his parents, Gregory M. and Susan Regan Salkow of Naples; and his sister, Regan of New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to the Geoffrey M. Salkow Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Business Partnership Foundation, Daria Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina, 1705 College St., Columbia, SC 29208.

Scarborough, Sylvia L.
Sylvia L. Scarborough, 62, of Charlotte died at her residence Friday, August 4, 2000. Graveside service for Mrs. Scarborough will be held Monday, August 7, at 11 a.m. in Sharon Memorial Park, with the Reverend Harold E. Peacock officiating. The family will receive friends this afternoon from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Derita Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service.

Mrs. Scarborough was born in Charlotte, February 17, 1938 daughter of the late John Cecil and Gracie Lee McCaskill Mills. Sylvia was a graduate of North Mecklenburg High School and attended Cole Memorial United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Lynn Scarborough.

Sylvia is survived by her husband of 44 years, Donald R. Scarborough of the home, and daughter, Debra Scarborough Abeling of Charlotte.

Memorials may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
