Starnes, David Ray
David Ray Starnes, 43, of Charlotte died Friday, August 4 at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born May 2, 1957 in Charlotte to Frank K. Starnes and the late Ola Mae Rice Starnes.

A graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park on Monday, August 7 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Bruce Pope officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 6 from 7:30-9:00 PM at Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center, 5505 Monroe Road.

Mr. Starnes is survived by his father, Frank K. Starnes of Charlotte; brother, Franklin Wayne Starnes of Denver, NC; sisters, Debra K. Russell of Charlotte, Shirley Starnes of Indian Trail and Barbara Stilwell of Matthews.

Carolina Funeral & Cremation is entrusted.

Sullivan, Daniel Vincent
Daniel Vincent Sullivan, 85, of Largo, FL, died on Friday in Clearwater, FL. Dan was the son of the late John Francis Sullivan and Delia Fallon Sheehan of Fall Riber, Massachusetts. After graduating BMC Durfee High School in Fall Riber, MA in 1931 he traveled south to Sea Island, GA where he met and married icon his future wife, Del (Adele) Bernstein in 1936. They were married icon for 44 years, until Del's death in 1980. Dan was a natural golfer having caddied as a boy at many of the courses around Fall River and Providence, RI. In 1935, he became the golf pro and club manager at the Brunswick Country Club. He went on to become the golf pro at Bacon Park Municipal Golf Course in Savannah, GA. Dan always kept this PGA card in his wallet. In 1942 he began a 40-year career with J.A. Jones Construction Company with building Liberty Ships at the Glynn County Shipyard in Brunswick, GA. He retired as Vice-President of Purchasing. Dan was most proud of his orchestration of the successful and safe evacuation of Jones personnel and others from Iran at the beginning of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. During his career he lived in Okinawa, Japan and Teheran, Iran. His occupation required him to travel extensively both in and outside of this country. His travel and work in more than 40 countries were marked by pushpins in a map of the worked he kept in his living room.

Dan was a devout Catholic and a charter member along with Del of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Charlotte. Prior to retiring to Florida, Dan was a long-time resident of Charlotte.

His survivors are Children and their spouses, Shaun V. Sullivan, and wife, Aurora C. of Clearwater, FL, Terrence D. Sullivan, and wife Marguerite S. of Cary, NC, Stephen F. Sullivan and wife Lesa A. of Gaithersburg, MD, Del Sullivan Kohl and husband, Mark, of Agoura Hills, CA, Daniel M. Sullivan and wife, Kathy R. of Thorton, CO, and Peter K. Sullivan and Vickie Morgan of Blue Ridge, VA. Grandchildren, Sharon Abouhanna, Michael Kathleen, Erin, John Daniel, Martin, Stephanie, Johnathan Weitzel, Allison Kohl, Shane, Kelly, Megan, and Brian. Great-grandchildren, Alex Abouhanna, Gabriel, and Ariel.

Siblings, Edward Sullivan of Albuquerque, NM, Peggy Yeomans of Richmond, VA, and Marion Anderson of Somersville, CT.

There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. with a visitation following until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8 at Harry and Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 9, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road at 11 a.m., with interment following next to his beloved wife at Sharon Memorial Cemetery, 54000 Monroe Road.

For those who wish, donations to the Parkinson's Foundation, 1401 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204 are requested in lieu of flowers.

Kearns, Jimmy Ray
ASHEBORO - Jimmy Ray Kearns, 60, died August 4, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Monday at Ridge Funeral Home.

Lawing, Keith McClain
BESSEMER CITY - Keith McClain Lawing, 71, of 1011 N. Sixth St., died Friday, August 4, 2000. A memorial service will be Sunday at Greene Funeral Service-Westside Chapel beginning at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Leroy Easler officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Sunday at Greene Funeral Service Westside Chapel.

He was a member of Trinity Assembly Evangelical Church, also a WW2 Navy Veteran.

Memorials may be made to the Heart Society of Gaston County 220 E. Franklin Blvd Gastonia, NC 28052 or Trinity Assembly Evangelical Church Fund, 1458 White-Jenkins Rd., Bessemer City, NC 28016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Page and Olean Hullender Lawing. He is survived by his wife, Sue Dellinger Lawing of the home, Son and daughter-in-law, Brian K. and Teresa Lawing of Gastonia, daughter, Scottie L. Lawing of the home, brother, Don C. Lawing of Gastonia and granddaughter, Brandi M. Lawing.

Murray, Preston Thomas `Tom'
CHERAW - Preston Thomas `Tom' Murray, 89, died Friday, August 4, 2000 in Bennettsville, SC.

Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late John Champ and Mary Emma Williams Murray. Mr. Murray was a WWII Navy Veteran and a member of the American Legion. He was a Professional Picture Framer. In 1975 he was named Outstanding American in the South. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Surviving are Mrs. Patricia Houser (daughter) of Cheraw, SC, Mrs. Vernelle Vereen (daughter) of Cheraw, SC, Mrs. Susan Melton (daughter) of Cheraw, SC, Mrs. Gloria Chandler (daughter) of North Augusta, SC, Mrs. Jerrie Miller (daughter) of Landrum, SC, 16 Grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Rivers Murray.

The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Old Saint David's Cemetery.

Day, Roy Jackson
CHINA GROVE - Roy Jackson Day, 75, died August 5, 2000. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Monday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Whitley's.

Setzer, Ruby Arvella Duncan
CONOVER - Ruby Arvella Duncan Setzer died Friday, August 4, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. Visitation is 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to service at the church.

Wallace, Barney Lee
FT. MILL - Mr. Barney Lee Wallace, 81, of Ft. Mill, SC and formerly of Charlotte, NC and Melbourne, FL, died Friday, August 4, 2000 at Mercy Hospital-South in Charlotte.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Wallace will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 from the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service, 727 E. Morehead St., Charlotte. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, August 6, 2000 at the funeral home.

Mr. Wallace was born May 1, 1919 in Charlotte, NC, a son of the late Columbus Harrison Wallace and Sarah Ethel Lawing Wallace. He was a lifetime member of both the Paw Creek American Legion Post 353 and D.A.V. Chapter 32, and was accepted into the Pack Rats of the D.A.V. Barney was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country overseas during WWII. He was a former member of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church (Oakdale) and attended Paw Creek High School. Barney drove trucks during most of his working life, however, he later became a Deputy Sherff for Mecklenburg County, NC serving several years under former Sheriff Clyde Hunter. He moved to Miami, FL where he worked at a nearby marina and retired as a disabled veteran and moved to Melbourne, FL. He returned to the Charlotte area in 1998 and lived in Ft. Mill, SC at the time of his death. Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by his daughter, Darlene Wallace Maner.

Mr. Wallace is survived by his wife, Gladys Gulledge Wallace; son, Jerry Wallace and his wife, Carolyn; twin brother, Baxter Wallace of Charlotte; brothers, Russell and Elwood Wallace both of Charlotte, Dennis Wallace of Monroe, NC, and Donald Wallace of Prattville, AL; grandchildren, Mark Wallace, Kimberly Whittingtonn, Jimmy Maner, Jr., Paul Maner, Gregory Maner, and Jack Maner; nine great grandchildren.

Arrangements by McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel.

Shines, Charles Thomas
GASTONIA - Charles Thomas Shines, Sr., 61, of 271 Southern Farm Rd., died August 4, 2000. He was born April 1, 1939 in Gaston County. Funeral is 2:30pm Sunday at Catawba Heights Wesleyan Church, Belmont. Burial will be in Gaston Mem. Park. Visitation was 7-9pm Saturday at Greene Funeral Service (Southside Chapel).

The Rev. Joe Hardin and the Rev. Richard Horney will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28053.

Pallbearers will be Jack Cearly, Jr, Gary Hedrick, Kyle Jones, Hunter Shires, and Phil Shires. Honorary Pallbearers will be Robby Hinkle, Matt Shires and Stuart Shires.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom B. and Mary Elizabeth Helton Shires.

He is survived by his sons, Thomas `Gene' Shires of Gastonia, Charles Shires, Jr. of Cumming, GA, daughter, Debbie Hinkle of Gastonia, brothers, Ben Shires of Waxhaw, Kenneth Shires of Davidson, NC, James Shires of Dallas, NC; sisters, Betty Jean Cearly of Belmont, Vickie Jenkins of Dallas, NC, Catherine Wilson of West Palm Beack, FL and seven grandchildren.

Mastroianni, Daphine Doster
GIBSON - Daphine Doster Mastroianni, a native of Gibson, NC, died August 3, 2000 in Charlotte, NC. She was 93.

The Rev. Martha Jane Raedels of the Third Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, will be residing over the graveside in Gibson which will be held in the Old Gibson Cemetery at (4 PM on Sunday, August 6th, 2000). Mrs. Mastroianni received a degree in music from N.C. College for Women (now UNCG) in 1927. She taught piano and public school music for six years in Cherryville and Kings Mountain, NC. In Cherryville she organized the first Boys Glee Club in Kings Mountain and organized the High School Band.

In 1936 Mrs. Mastroianni graduated from The Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing and began her nursing career as a surgical nurse at Hopkins and in Berea College Hospital in Kentucky.

In 1942 she joined the Army Nurse Corps and served as surgical nurse with the 18th General Hospital in the Asiatic Pacific area for four years. After receiving a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 1947, she joined the U.S. Public Health Service where she was employed until she retired in 1970. In the position of nursing consultant she was assigned to three Regional Offices: Washington, D.C., Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL. During her career with the USPHS - she was assigned to the state of Arkansas State to develop an accredited program for nurses assigned to county health departments, and to the University of Arkansas to help establish a baccalaureate program for nurses.

Since 1982 Mrs. Mastroianni has been a resident at Aldersgate, formerly of (The Methodist Home) in Charlotte, NC. In 1992 she married icon Joseph Mastroianni. They shared a cottage at Epworth Place until he passed away in 1999.

A Presbyterian, she has always been active in and supported her church, Third Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, NC.

Mrs. Mastroianni is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the Late Ethel Doster Webb of Gibson, NC, James E. Doster of Hemingway, SC, Pat Doster Wands of Fayetteville, NC and Jerry C. Doster of Pinehurst, NC.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate Chapel on Saturday, August 12th, 2000.

Price, Roy S.
HICKORY - Roy S. Price, 72, died August 4, 2000. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Highland United Methodist Church. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. August 6, 2000 at Hickory Funeral Home.

Birchfield, Monica Lynn Benge
HIGH SHOALS - Mrs. Monica Lynn Benge Birchfield, 27, died Saturday. Funeral is 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Hamby, Ms. Alma Crane
HUDSON - Ms. Alma Crane Hamby, 46, died Friday, August 4, 2000. A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. today at Kirksey Chapel in Valdese. Visitation is one hour prior at Family Funeral Care Kirksey Chapel.

Hatley, William Gene
HUDSON - William Gene Hatley, 77, died August 4, 2000. Funeral is 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Pendry's Chapel-Memorial Service. Visitation is 30 minutes prior to the service.

Davis, Dorothy Byrd
JEFFERSON - Dorothy Byrd Davis, died Thurs., August 3, 2000. Funeral services for Dorothy will be held at 2pm, Monday, August 7, 2000 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-9pm Sunday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel.

Fraley, Vivian Stancil
KANNAPOLIS - Vivian Stancil Fraley, 87, of Kannapolis, NC died August 1, 2000. Graveside services are 2:00 p.m. Tues. at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends, 1-2 p.m. Tues. at Whitley's prior to graveside services.

Shoe, Minnie (Ludena) Stallings
KANNAPOLIS - Mrs. Minnie (Ludena) Stallings Shoe, 76, died Friday, August 4, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Gordon Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 7-8:30 tonight at Gordon Funeral Home.

Tolbert, Coleman `Frank'
KERSHAW - Mr. Coleman `Frank' Tolbert, 69, of 4393 Ernest Scott Road, Kershaw, passed away Friday, August 4, 2000 at his home. He was born December 21, 1930, in Kershaw, a son of the late Mr. Oscar Reed Tolbert and Mrs. Nealie Catoe Tolbert. Mr. Tolbert was a member of the Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class. He was a US Army Veteran and was a Mason and member of the Abney Masonic Lodge #211.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 6, 2000 at 4:00 p.m. in the Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Anglin and the Rev. Howard Suttles. Burial will be in the Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Tolbert is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Jacobs Tolbert; a daughter, Mrs. Darlene Beckham and her husband Ray of Kershaw; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche T. Ray of Kershaw and Mrs. Annie Ollie T. Beavers of Joppa, Maryland; and three grandchildren, Amanda Beckham, Lauren Beckham both of Kershaw and Amy Lowery Fortune of Fuquay Varina, NC.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church, Building Fund, 7980 Haile Gold Mine Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.
