LENOIR - Sarah Sanders Cox, 65, died Saturday, August 5, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, Monday.

Keath, Harry Grant
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Harry Grant Keath, 83, of 229 Sunnyhill Drive in Lincolnton died Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Keath was born in Lancaster county Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Harry H. and Mary Rutter Keath. Mr. Keath was a 22 year veteran of the United States Navy. He served during WWII where he was a prisoner of war. He received several medals of honor during that time, including the purple heart as well as the silver and bronze stars. He also served an additional eight years in the reserve in which he saw military duty in the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include, wife, Mary Shull Keath of the hoe; one step son, Bob Wilson of Charlotte, NC; and two granddaughters.

His funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Victory Grove Tabernacle. Rev. F.M. Spargo and Rev. L.C. Rankin will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday night from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Warlick Funeral Home.

Phillips, Jason
MONROE - Mr. Jason Phillips, 24, of Monroe, died Saturday at the Union Regional Medical Center. Born January 1, 1976 in Union County he was the son of William Thomas and Linda Kay Aycoth Phillips.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at 4 p.m. from the Chapel of McEwen Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald Helms. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his parents; two brothers, Andrew Todd Phillips of Greensboro and Bradley Dylan Phillips of the home; maternal grandmother; Mrs. Johnie Aycoth of Monroe; paternal grandmother, Martha Inez Phillips of Monroe; numerous aunts and uncles.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. from McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.

The McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is serving the Phillips family.

Murphy, Kenneth Moore
MOUNT HOLLY - Mr. Kenneth Moore Murphy, 84, of Oak Trail, Mount Holly, died Saturday, August 5, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Belmont, Mr. Murphy was a son of the late Henry C. and Maggie Skidmore Murphy and a brother of the late Patrick H. `Pat' Murphy, Henry C. Murphy, Jr., and Thelma M. Hallman. Mr. Murphy was a builder by trade and also served as a Mason in South Fork Lodge #462 A.F. and A.M., and a Shriner. HE was a member of FIrst Baptist Church of Belmont.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Rosa Mae King Murphy; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Martin H. and Jo Ann E. Murphy, Belmont; grandchildren and their spouses, Martin H. Jr., and Barbara Murphy, Charlotte; Elisa Ann and Hans Litaker, Charlotte; great-granddaughters, Cameron and Hannah Litaker; sister, Mrs. Frances M. Lewis, Belmont; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret M. and Lanford Brackett, Clover; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000, First Baptist Church, Belmont, with the Rev. Robert C. Baker, Rev. Jack Painter, and Dr. Robert C. Winecoff officiating. BUrial will follow the service in Greenwood Cemetery, Belmont. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. tonight (Monday, August 7, 2000) at First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of Dr. Martin H. Murphy, 207 Merewood Rd., Belmont, NC 28012.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Fellowship Hall Fund, 23 N. Central Ave., Belmont, NC 28012.

Rhom, James Dewey
NEBO - James Dewey Rhom, 83, died Sunday, August 6. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Westmoreland Funeral Home. Graveside service is 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Scarborough, Warren J.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Warren J. Scarborough, Sr., 84, died Friday, August 4, 2000, on Newport News. A native of Montgomery, Alabama, he had been a resident of Newport News for 66 years.

He was a quality-assurance specialist for the supervisor of shipbuilding, US Navy, where he retired in 1980 after 28 years of service. He worked in Newport News Shipbuilding for 43 years.

He was a charter member and usher at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church; past Grand Knight, Walter Pollard Council 5480; past Faithful Navigator, Fr. Bader Assembly 2430; past District Deputy, Knights of Columbus, State of Virginia; past president, Newport News Host Lions Club, 1988-89; past president;, Retired Men's Club Virginia Peninsula; and former member of Crittenden, Eclipse and Hobson Ruitan clubs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, and two brothers, Fred and Richard.

He is survived by one son, Warren J. Scarborough Jr. of Charlotte, NC; three daughter, Theresa Kimbel of Newport News, VA, Cecilia Fennell of Yorktown, VA, and Janice Suls of Windsor, NC; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother, George K. Scarborough of Alabama and two sisters, Mary G. Dishner of Alabama and Margaret Hardwick of CO.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 8 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel by the Rev. Msgr. Michael D. McCarron. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, VA, Wed. August 9, 2000 at 10a.m.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Building Fund, 100 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA 23601.

Lanning, Paul Jefferson
OLD FORT - Paul Jefferson Lanning, 68, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Asheville. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort.

King, Lester Thomas
ROCK HILL - Mr. Lester Thomas King, 71, of 2963 Pump Station Road, died Friday, August 4, 2000 at his home. He was a native of Waxhaw, NC. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Christian Baptist Church. Interment will be at 2:30 in the Carolina Memorial Park, Concord, NC. The Rev. Paul Blake will officiate.

He was preceded in death by his parents the late, James H. King, Sr. and the late Virginia McGuirt King.

Mr. King was a member of the Christian Baptist Church and formerly work for the Kannapolis Construction Company in Kannapolis, NC. He was a retied carpenter and cabinet maker. He was the widower of Lavinia H. King. Mr. King is survived by his wife, Mamie C. King of the home; his five daughters, Sara Barker of Gastonia, NC, Debera Deal of China Grove, NC, Mary Weckesser of Rock Hill, SC, Margaret Lynch of Ft. Mill, SC and Linda Bradley of Pace, FL; his step-mother, Francis King of Ft. Mill, SC; his four brothers, Rufus King of Kannapolis, NC, Claude King of High Point, NC, Jerry King and James `Heath' King, Jr., both of Rock Hill, SC; his two sisters, Irene McCarter of Colorado Springs, CO and Helen Sherer of Rock Hill, SC; his two step-daughters, Ann Napisa of Virginia and Pam Capps of Doulasville, GA; 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Christian Baptist Church, 327 S. Stonewall St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and other times at the home.

SALISBURY - Mrs. Gladys Trexler Stirewalt, 88, died August 5, 2000. Funeral is 4 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church. Visitation is 7-8:30 tonight at Powles Funeral Home.

Harrison, Mary Marie Davis
STANLEY - Mary Marie Davis Harrison, 65, of 712 East Chestnut St., Stanley died August 6, 2000 at home. She was a native of Swain County, NC and the daughter of the late Willis Douglas and Minnie Stiles Davis. She was the sister of the late Mitchell Davis and Hattie Robinson. She was the widow of the Terry Irvin Harrison.

She is survived by her daughters, Judy Halperin of Concord, Teresa Stines of Dallas, sons, Terry Harrison, Jr. of Stanley, Mark Harrison of Stanley, Jack Harrison of Stanley, brother, Walter Davis of Clover, SC, sisters, Ellie Lowe of Blacksburg, SC, Iva Lee Groves of Midland, VA, Mildred Blankenship of Ranlo, Doris Carter of Muskogee, OK, Willene Wagoner of Gastonia, Faye Holcombe of Gastonia; 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Funeral services are 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley with the Rev. Richard Cole officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley.

VALDESE - Mr. Danny Odell Williams, 49, died August 3, 2000. Funeral is 4 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service.

WAGRAM - Mr. Percy Ammons, 82, died August 5. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Montpelier Presbyterian Church. McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is in charge of arrangements.

Lowery, Johnny Kenneth
WAXHAW - Johnny Kenneth Lowery, 29, died Friday, August 4, 2000. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-7:30 p.m. Monday at Grier's Chapel-Monroe.

Tritt, Margaret Virginia Greene
YORK - Mrs. Margaret Virginia Greene Tritt, 79, of 426 Deer Meadow Road, York, SC, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at her home.

Born July 9, 1921 in Cliffside, C, she was a daughter of the late Fletcher Greene and Mae Susan Wesson Greene. A former resident of Fort Mill, SC, Mrs. Tritt had worked for Springs Industries, Lance and also served as a hostess at Wendy's and Hardees. Mrs. Tritt was a charter member of King James Baptist Church in York, SC.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at the Wolfe Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Mill with Dr. Robert Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at Unity Cemetery.

Mrs. Tritt is survived by her husband, Charles L. `Pop' Tritt of York, SC; two sons Charles V. Tritt of Augusta, GA and Chris Thomas of York, SC; three daughters, Ann Hammond of Rock Hill, SC, Joyce McCraven of South Windsor, CT and Brenda Hensley of York, SC; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m., Monday, August 7, 2000 at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill, SC and at other times at the home.

Bishop, Herbert Edward
Mr. Herbert Edward Bishop, 95, of Charlotte, NC died Monday, August 7, 2000 at White Oak Manor.

He was born May 25, 1905 to the late Herbert Edwards Bishop and Delia Sophia McKenna Bishop. A survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Mr. Bishop retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service. He then assumed the duties of Communications Director for the U.S. Fifth Naval District, Norfolk, VA. until 1952, at which time he moved to Currituck Couunty, NC, living there until moving to Charlotte in 1984. He was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service followed by full military honors will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 9, 2000 at Sharon Memorial Park with The Reverend Alice A. Johnson officiating.

Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Keen Bishop and by a son, Richard Keen Bishop. He is survived by a son, Michael Edward Bishop and his wife, Carrie of Albemarle, NC; three daughters, Patricia B. Lazarus of charlotte, NC, Carolyn B. Frate and her husband, Richard of Florence, SC and Pamela B. McLean and her husband, Jonathan of Charlotte, NC; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270 or to the World War II Memorial Fund, Attendtion: GR048, PO Box 96074, Washington, D.C. 20090-6074.
