Rushing, Bennie T.
Bennie T. Rushing, 88, of Charlotte died Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Mr. Rushing was born in Peachland, N.C. December 14, 1912, son of the late Tom Rushing and Mary Jane Gaddy Rushing. Bennie was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, and the Men's Bible Class at the Church. He was retired from Chesapeake Paper Stock Company as a superintendent for 40 years.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Pearl Preslar Rushing of the home; three sons, Gene Rushing and wife Vicki of Jacksonville, FL., Carlton Rushing and wife Ruby of Mint Hill, N.C., and Jimmie Rushing and wife Nita of Charlotte; brother, Marvin Rushing; sisters, Lizzie Sikes, Ila Lee Self and Nellie Saunders; Grandchildren Jimmie Rushing Jr., Michelle R. Thomas, Lori R. Howard, Scott Southworth, Richard Rushing, Michael Rushing, and Tonya R. Aycock; Nine Great Grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

funeral service for Mr. Rushing will be held Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 2:30 PM from the Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ray Rushing Jr., Rob Tadlock, and his four grandsons, Jimmie Rushing Jr., Scott Southworth, Richard Rushing and Michael Rushing.

The family received friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 PM at Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 1915 Oakdale Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28216.

Sr., James Franklin McClellan
OAKBORO - James Franklin McClellan Sr. died Jan. 16, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church. Interment will be in Oakboro Cemetery. Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle is in charge.

Brafford, Thelma Mae Blackwelder
CONCORD - Mrs. Thelma Mae Blackwelder Brafford, age 84, formerly of Arbor Street NE, Concord, NC died Thursday, January 18, 2001.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 21, 2001 at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tom Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Saturday at Wilkinson Funeral Home and will be at 3935 St. Andrews Circle, Concord the remaining time.

Mrs. Brafford was born in Cabarrus Co., NC, May 19, 1916, daughter of the late Walter Thomas & Lula Kiser Blackwelder, wife of the late Charles L. Brafford, who preceded her in death in 1990. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and a former Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Carol B. Gagen of Concord and Mrs. Pamela B. Pierce of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son, Charles L. "Chuck" Brafford, Jr. of Concord; 4 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, PO Box 643, Concord, NC 28026-0344.

Batton, Denise Natalie
Miss Denise Natalie Batton, - 50, 4243 Beatty Drive, died January 22, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Born in Los Angeles, CA, she was the daughter of the late Lucille Reece Batton. She was formerly employed as a salesperson.

Survivors include two sisters, Claudette Elizabeth Batton and Cindy Lou Vallie Batton, both of Charlotte; and numerous friends.

Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend Bill Miller at 2:30 PM Saturday, in Evergreen Cemetery Serenity Chapel, Belmont. Interment will follow in the cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 pm Saturday in The Serenity Chapel prior to services.

Memorials may be made to The Denise Natalie Batton Memorial Fund, c/o McLean-Bumgardner, PO Box 904, Belmont, NC 28012.

The family expresses sincere gratitude to the physicians and medical staff who were a vital part of Denise's routine care.

Bookman, Cora Lee
Cora Lee Bookman was born on September 8, 1928 in Kershaw, SC to the late Lee Dickie and Marie Cloud. She departed this life on January 23, 2001 in The Saturn Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte, NC.

She attended public schools in Kershaw, SC and worked as a "housekeeper" for the Golden Eagle Hotel chain until her retirement.

A very humble and loving mother, grandmother, sister and family member, Cora Lee will be greatly missed and always remembered by her family and all who knew her.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her daughters, Martha Brown (Leroy), Mary McQuiller (James), Sonjie Hilton and Melissa Little; her brother, Curtis Oliver; and her sister, Elizabeth Izzard; eight grandchildren, Marie Gregory (David), Brenda McQuiller, Catherine R. Brown, Sam McQuiller (Carolyn), Angela Brown, Haywood Brown, Catherine Brown and Sariko Jones; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday the 26th from 7-8 PM in the Family Mortuary Chapel, 2310 Statesville Avenue. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 PM on Saturday, January 27th at Family Mortuary Chapel.

Brown, Gardner
Gardner Brown, 81, of Charlotte died Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Mercy Hospital. There will be no local service. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Wilma P. Brown and daughter, Diane Brown of Buford, Ga.

Buboltz, Ms. Deborah "Debbie" Parker
Ms. Deborah "Debbie" Parker Buboltz, 48, of Charlotte, died Thursday, January 25, 2001 at her residence. Born September 7, 1952 in Mecklenburg County, she was daughter of O.L. Parker of Lasing, NC and Mary Morgan Parker of Ocean Isle Beach, NC. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, co-owner of O.L. Parker and Son Grading Company, a previous employee of Pipe and Equipment Company and a graduate of North Mecklenburg High School Class of 1970.

Survivors include her father and stepmother, O.L. Parker and Eleanor M. parker of Lasing, NC; mother, Mary Morgan Parker of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; fiancee David M. Rhyne of Charlotte; daughter, Michelle L. Miller and husband, Todd of Charlotte; brother, Rodney Parker of Charlotte; sister, Donna Whitesides and husband, Danny, of Charlotte; grandson, Artie Cavanaugh, III; nieces and nephews, Daniel Whitesides, Morgan, Jason and Allyson Parker.

funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 27, 2001 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Reverend A. Owen Peeler and Reverend Harold Hudson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Raymer Funeral Home Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Mabel Oakes Canada, 83, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at home.

Funeral Services will be held at 2PM Saturday, January 27 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church with the Father Peter Pham as celebrant. A service will follow in the spring in Hogansburg, NY.

Mrs. Canada was born November 17, 1917 in Hogansburg, NY, to the late Richard and Margaret Oakes. She was a Native American and member of the Mohawk Nation. She was a caring and loving person who enjoyed fishing, walking in the woods and had a fondness for cats. She was a lady who gave a lot with an open heart, and never expected anything in return.

Her survivors include her daughters, Brenda vanRiemsdyk and her husband Ian of Charlotte, Tracy LaVean of Branson, MO; two sons, Patrick Canada and wife Lori, and Gordon Oakes of Hogansburg, NY; one brother, Alex Oakes of St. Regis, Ontario; three sisters, Bernice Papineau of Hogansburg, NY, Charlotte Morrey of St. Regis, Ontario, and Dorothy Lazore of Hogansburg, NY; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials in her memory may be sent to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Chisholm, Ulyesses Sylvester
Mr. Ulyesses Sylvester Chisholm, 73, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001. Funeral is Friday at 2:00 PM at Gethsemane Baptist Church. Burial in York Memorial Park. Visitation is 1-2PM prior to the service. Alexander Funeral Home is in charge.

Clifton, Willie B.
Mr. Willie B. Clifton, of Charlotte, died January 23, 2001. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 PM at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 2670 Dr. Carver Drive, Charlotte. Interment will follow at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the residence of Sister Margaret Dewberry, 843 White Plains Road, Charlotte. Mr. Clifton is survived by Eight Sisters, Three Brothers, and a host of nieces and nephews. King's Funeral Home, Charlotte, is serving Mr. Clifton's family.

Ghant, James Blair "Jimmy"
Mr. James Blair "Jimmy" Ghant, 48, of Weddington, NC, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001.

Jimmy was born October 28, 1952, a son of the late Robert E. Lee Ghant and Doris Maness Ghant. He was an entrepreneur, having been involved in a number of business enterprises throughout a life spent entirely in Union County.

Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Amy Michelle Ghant Beaty of Charlotte; one brother, Eddy Ghant of Matthews; and his sister, Mickey Byrd of Charlotte.

funeral service is 2 PM, Saturday, January 27, at the Matthews Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, officiated by Pastor John Propst of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church of Weddington. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 PM tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Scarlet Seco Ghant, - 46, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001.

Born September 30, 1954, in Portsmouth, VA, a daughter of the late Edward Manuel Seco and Peggy Seco Sanders, Scarlet had worked in retail sales and was a licensed cosmetologist. A person who loved her plants, arts and crafts, and homemaking in general, she was known for her care and love for the elderly, young children and animals.

funeral service is 11 AM Saturday, January 27, at Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard, with Reverend Robert B. Arnold of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Dilworth Chapel.

Scarlet is survived by her two sisters, Debra Seco McGroary and her husband, Mark of Sylva, NC and Rebecca Seco Finch and her husband, Bill, of Rock Hill, SC; and her grandmother, Sona Seco of White Oak, WV.

Grillo, Patricia Ann
Patricia Ann Grillo, 55, of Charlotte, died at Mercy Hospital Wednesday, January 24, 2001.

A service to celebrate her life will be held today at 2 PM from the Hankins & Whittington, Wilson Chapel with the Reverend Jerry A. Grillo of Living Word Fellowship Church in Hickory, N.C. officiating.

Patricia was born in Fall River, Mass., October 30, 1945, daughter of the late Bento and Lorraine Cabral. She was a graduate of Durfee High School. After twenty years of marriage she and her husband moved to Florida where Patricia became a licensed childcare provider for over ten years. They both joined the first Christian Church of Tarpon Springs, FL and enjoyed sailing and flying. Recently they moved to Charlotte, N.C., where Patricia finally lost her battle with ovarian cancer after a long seven-month battle.

Mrs. Grillo is survived by her husband, Gene of the home; son, Jeffrey J. Grillo of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter, Jennifer Ann Grillo of Palm Harbor, FL; brother, Brian (Buddy) Patrick Cabral of Cape Cod, MA; sister, Eileen Joinson of Fall River, MA; niece, Hannah Cabral of Cape Cod, MA; two nephews, Christopher and Brian T. Joinson of Fall River, MA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, N.C. 28204.
