Baby Matthew Strader
MT. HOLLY, - 9 months old son of Michael and Lisa Pugh Strader of 101 Fites Creek Road, died January 25, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

In addition to his parents, other survivors include a sister, Krystal Dawn Strader and a brother Phillip Michael Strader, both of the home; a paternal grandmother, Helene Strader of Thomasville, NC, maternal grandparents, Arnold and Peggy Pugh of Trinity, NC; and a paternal great-grandmother, Maria Kaiser of Stuutgart, Germany.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Barney Pierce will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mt. Holly. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30-2:00 PM Saturday.

Memorials may be made to the Carolinas Medical Children's Hospital, 1001 Blythe Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.

Hammonds, Edna Hatchell
Edna Hatchell Hammonds, 83, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital.

funeral service is 11 am Saturday, January 27 at Grace Baptist Church, with the Reverend Leland K. Stephens officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 in Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville, SC. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 this evening at the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service, 5301 Albemarle Road.

Born March 17, 1917 in Darlington County, SC, Mrs. Hammonds was a daughter of the late Lela Mae Mahn Hatchell and Malcolm Hatchell. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and former member of Fourth Street Baptist Church in Hartsville. In addition to her parents, her husband, Henry Boyd Hammonds, and two infant sons, Michael and Danny, preceded Mrs. Hammonds in death.

Survivors include a son, Don Hammonds of Jacksonville Beach, FL; two daughters, Edna Davis and Kaye Bryant, both of Charlotte; two brothers, Melvin Hatchell of Virginia Beach, VA and Allen Hatchell of Jacksonville, NC; ten grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Grace Baptist Church Youth Ministry, 5232 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28215.

Arrangements are by the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service, 5301 Albemarle Road.

Harrison, Wayne "Skip"
Wayne "Skip" Harrison, 44, died January 19, 2001.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Kathleen B. Harrison; his children, Onsur'e Harrison, Marco Barkley, Wayne Harrison, Jr., Shawn Barkley, Monique Barkley, & Kiana Harrison.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, January 27th at 3 PM in The Family Mortuary Chapel, 2310 Statesville Ave. Visitation begins at 2 PM. The family will be at 430 Conway Ave, Apt. #F.

Hollingsworth, Vingia W.
Mrs. Vingia W. Hollingsworth 81, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 27, 2001 at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. Visitation will be this evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hollingsworth is survived by two sons, Joseph and Tom Hollingsworth of FL; daughter, Jean of Charlotte; one granddaughter, Jeannie and her husband, Keith of Texas; and two great - grandchildren, Colby and Lauren of Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Hollingsworth.

Arrangements are by McEwen Funeral and Cremation service, Charlotte Chapel.

Lake, Rosalie Handley
Rosalie Handley Lake, 85 of 3700 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC died Thursday, January 25, 2001 at Wesley Care Center.

She was born January 18, 1916 in Huntington, WV., a daughter of the late Martha and Harry Handley. Mrs. Lake was a retired Medical Secretary with Drs. Haught and Vega in Huntington, WV. Mrs. Lake was a member of Baptist Temple, where she was a member of the choir for some 30 years. She had been a resident of Charlotte since 1980.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the 5th floor nurses and staff of Wesley Care Center for their loving care.

funeral service will be 12:30 PM Saturday, January 27, 2001 at Chapman Mortuary, Huntington, WV with The Reverend Andrew Magnusson officiating. Interment will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington, WV. The family will receive friends from 11:00-12:15 PM Saturday at Chapman Mortuary.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Earl F. Lake; children, Marilyn Lake Hartley and her husband, Dr. William E. Verross of Charlotte, NC, Philip Earl Lake of Lakeland, FL and Gary G. Lake, and his wife, Carolyn, of Richmond, VA; two sisters, Juanita H. Lake and Ella Jean Linkfield and her husband, Jim, all of Huntington, WV; and five grandchildren, Anthony J. Lake, W. Coleman Carter, F. Taylor Carter, Kimberly Lake, and Laura Lake.

Memorials may be made to Baptist Temple, 902 21st Street, Huntington, WV 25703.

McClinton, John
John McClinton, Jr., 56, of 1902 Woodale Terrace died January 24, 2001.

He is survived by his devoted companion, Ms. Annie Feaster; his mother, Minnie McClinton; and his brothers and sisters, Arthur McClinton, Robert McClinton, Sarah Rhyne and Eldora Vandiver (Williams).

Visitation is 8:30 PM, Friday the 26th in the Family Mortuary Chapel, 2310 Statesville Avenue. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 PM on Saturday, January 27th at The United House of Prayer For All People #2, 2526 Statesville Avenue.

Family Mortuary is serving the family of Mr. McClinton.

McIlwaine, Sarah S.
Mrs. Sarah S. McIlwaine, age 75 of 4016 Bearwood Avenue, Charlotte, N.C. died January 24, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 27, 2001 at Greater Galilee Baptist Church, Charlotte. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens, Charlotte. The family will receive friends 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday at the church.

Pierce, Ray C.
Ray C. Pierce, age 71 of Charlotte, N.C., died January 25th at Presbyterian Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday at Sutton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial at First Baptist Church Cemetery in Pageland, SC. Visitation is 1-2 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Pierce was born August 26, 1929 in Pageland, SC. Mr. Pierce was the son of the late Howard & Essie Pierce. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Aladdin Graphics Printing Company. A beloved husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jean Hicks Pierce; a daughter, Debra Pierce of Raleigh; and a son, Jonathan Pierce of Charlotte.

Memorials may be made to Leukemia Society of America, 5950 Fairview Rd., Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Pressley, James Holland
James Holland Pressley, 81, of Charlotte, NC passed away on January 24, 2001.

He was a kind and very generous man who was truly loved by all who surrounded him for so many years.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, January 27, 2001 at McEwen funeral service, Derita Chapel. The Reverend Gerald Ramsey will be officiating the services with burial to follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. Those serving as pallbearers are: Donny Jones, Chan Thompson III, Larry Baker, Chan Thompson, Jr., Kim Belk, and Darren Raynor.

Mr. Pressley was born May 12, 1919 in Waxhaw, NC, the son of the late Alberts and Blanche Emma (Broome) Pressley. He was employed for ten years at First Union National Bank before he retired into the antique business with a store in Matthews, NC and then in Pineville, NC. He was involved with Metrolina Expo for 23 years.

He leaves behind his loving wife of sixty years, Edith Pressley; his daughter, Judy Armstrong; granddaughter, Michelle Jones and her husband, Donny; grandson, Chan Thompson III and his wife, Katie; great-grandchildren, Alexis Jones, Ryan and Ashley Thompson; nieces and nephews, Carol and Larry Baker, Linda and Tom Weathers, Julie and Kim Belk, Jill Baker, Kelly and Jeff Revels, Tom Weathers, and Jeff Fisher; and many, many friends.

Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Derita Chapel.

Riley, Jessie
Mr. Jessie Riley, Jr., 54, of 2225 Irma St., Charlotte, NC died January 24th, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 27th at Grier funeral service, 115 North Cloudman St. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday, prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Riley was a native of Mecklenburg Co., NC. He did yard work for a living, which he loved. He was a member of Steele Creek AMZ.

Survivors include his Goddaughter, Angela Byrum of Charlotte, NC; Big Ma, Annie Branham of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Pearlie Mae Riley, Rudy Seller, both of Charlotte, NC; brother, Johnny Riley of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of Charlotte, NC.

Grier funeral service, 115 Cloudman Street, Charlotte, is serving the Riley family.

Wallace, James Alexander
Mr. James Alexander Wallace, 57, of 4720 Dogwood Place, Charlotte, NC died January 22, 2001 at Cambro Health Care Center, Charlotte, NC.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 27, 2001 at Greenville Memorial AME Zion Church, 6116 Montieth Drive, Charlotte, NC, with Rev. Dr. George McNeely officiating. The body will lie in state from 12 Noon until 2:00 PM at the church. Burial will be in Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Wallace was born August 21, 1942 to Caleb Wallace and the late Iney Wallace. He was preceded in death by one son, O'Brian Miller.

Survivors are his wife, Gertrude M. Wallace; sons, James Wallace, Jr. & Anthony Wallace of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Cynthia W. Caldwell of Virginia Beach, VA, Donna Wallace, Audrey Wallace & Robin Miller, all of Charlotte, NC; brothers, Thomas Knox, David Wallace (Shirley), Joseph Wallace (Wilhelmina), Perry Wallace (Gwendolyn), Edward Wallace (Cleonia), all of Charlotte, NC; sister, Mrs. Margaret W. Martin (Bobby Sr.) of Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren; a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and friends.

Long & Son Mortuary Service is serving the Wallace family.

Parks, Donald Lee
ALBEMARLE - Mr. Donald Lee Parks, 27, died Jan. 24, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. today at Dunn's Grove Baptist Church. Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle is serving the family.

Gibson, Ralph Edward
ALEXIS - Ralph Edward Gibson, age 72, formerly of Gastonia, N.C. died January 24, 2001.

A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 AM Friday, January 26, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Park. Full Masonic Rites will be conducted at the graveside by Holland Memorial Lodge #668 AF&AM.; The family will receive friends 7-9 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Gibson was born in Cherokee County, N.C., son of the late John Hershel Gibson and Lula Smith. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Gibson was a retired Electrician Owner Operator; a member of East Baptist Church and a member of Holland Memorial Masonic Lodge #66* of Gastonia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Lucas Gibson; brothers, Jack & Charles Gibson.

Survivors include his daughter, Susan Gibson Snodgrass of Bowling Green, SC; caregiver Ruby Townsend of Alexis, NC; sisters, Maggie Dunn of Gastonia, Nancy Blanton of Gastonia, Peggy Wilson of Gastonia; brothers James Gibson of Gastonia, Clifford Gibson of Oakboro, NC; and granddaughter, Lea Snodgrass.

Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Stephens, Billy Joe
ASHEBORO - Mr. Billy Joe Stephens, age 69, died Jan. 24, 2001. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Sat. at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 7-9 PM Friday at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home.
