Ruth M. Kutz, 85, died January 27, 2001 at Mercy Hospital. Prayer service is 1:00 PM Friday, Feb. 2 at Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Blvd. Survivors include her daughter, Rita Alspach. Memorials may be sent to Catholic Social Services, 1123 S. Church St., Charlotte, NC 28203.

McCray, Louisa Mae
Louisa Mae McCray of 1816 Rush Wind Dr., Charlotte, NC died January 28, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete at this time. Alexander Funeral Home is serving the McCray family.

Mellichamp, Martha Thomas
Mrs. Martha Thomas Mellichamp, 79, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at her home. Pending arrangements are in the care of the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service, 5301 Albemarle Road.

Mosher, William George
Mr. William George Mosher, 83, died Jan. 27, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Idlewild AR Presbyterian Church, 7619 Idlewild Rd. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Mosher; and his children.

Memorials may be made to Idlewild AR Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home.

Pendergraft, Anna V.
Anna V. Pendergraft, 90, of Connellsville, PA, formerly of Charlotte, died Dec. 25, 2000 of a heart attack.

Anna was born on June 15, 1910 in Scottdale, PA, the daughter of the late Harry and Ann McGarity Shelly. Anna had lived in Charlotte for sixty years. She was a retired employee from the S.H. Kress Company with 35 years of service. She was also a member of the Saint Peter's Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chris W. Pendergraft; three brothers; and a sister.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated March 2, 2001 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Connellsville, PA.

James H. Rogers, (Col. USAF, Ret.)
Dr. James H. Rogers, (Col. USAF, Ret.), who served his country in military service for 33 years, died January 28, 2001.

Dr. Rogers was born November 23, 1927 in Mooresville, North Carolina and graduated from Mooresville High School in 1945. He served in the Army Air Corps as a Dental Lab Technician from 1945 to 1949. He earned his under graduated degree from his beloved University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951 and graduated from its dental school in 1955. Upon graduation, Dr. Rogers entered the USAF and served 18 years as a General Dental Officer and 12 years as a Dental Staff Officer. In 1966 he attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA, which is operated under the direct supervision of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for officers and key civilians of the US and Allied nations. He served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive in 1968-69.

Dr. Rogers was highly decorated for exceptional and meritorious conduct and outstanding service to his country. Awards: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Good Conduct, Humanitarian Service, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Medal and the Air Force Organization Excellence award. He retired from Eglin Air Force Base, Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 1984 and moved back to North Carolina in 1987.

Dr. Rogers is survived by his wife of 52 years, Peggy Johnson Rogers; his sons and their wives, Ronald E. Rogers and Dana of Salisbury, NC, Karl R. (Rusty) Rogers and Robin Raymer of Pittsboro, NC, Dr. Patrick R. Rogers and Rachel of Jamestown, NC and Michael T. Rogers and Anita of Cullowhee, NC; his daughter and husband, Nancy R. Pomeranz and Jim of Cary, NC; and nine grandchildren, Steve, James, Chris, Lauren, Emily, Jordan, Salem, Mollie and Madison. Dr. Rogers is also survived by his sisters, Mary R. Brawley and Ella Mae Cruse of Mooresville; and his brothers, Paul E. Rogers and wife, Barbara of Fayetteville and Joseph F. Rogers of Mooresville,

A celebration of Dr. Rogers' life will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 1, 2001 with full military honors at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel. Interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 PM today at the funeral home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Memorial Program, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301.

Reynolds, Willa Deane Sparrow
Willa Deane Sparrow Reynolds, - 73, 701 Pritchard Street, died January 30, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital.

A native of Erath County, Texas, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Maude Kelly Sparrow. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from Sharon Towers, Charlotte and a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Belmont.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, Zella Pace, Bertie Sparrow, Ouida Sparrow, Ina Cockram, Minnie Lee Abbott an Daisy Boheler.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie V. Reynolds; nephew, J.C. Boheler, Shelby; nieces, Faye Drumm, Charlotte, Maude Dixon, Kings Mountain, and Mary Boheler, Shelby.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at Carothers Funeral Home, Belmont. Burial will be at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Belmont. The family will receive friends 7-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Carothers Funeral Home, Belmont, is serving the Reynolds family.

Stephenson, Robert Arnold `Bob`
Mr. Robert Arnold `Bob` Stephenson, Jr., 93, of Charlotte, died Monday, January 29, 2001, at The Brian Center on Reddman Road.

Born April 10, 1907, in Mecklenburg County, a son of the late Robert Arnold Stephenson, Sr. and Ellie J. Wolfe Stephenson, he is survived by his Daughter, Bobbie S. Lyles and her husband, William R. Lyles, of Charlotte; two grandchildren, William Richard Lyles, Jr. and Darla Williams and her husband, Scotty, all of Charlotte; and two brothers, Oliver Stephenson of Weddington, NC, and Charles Stephenson of Douglas, GA. His wife of 54 years, Ruby P. Stephenson, and a brother, William Stephenson, preceded him in death.

A graduate of Pineville High School, he served in the US Army as an automotive mechanic in Northern France and the Rhineland during World War II and retired after many years as an inside salesperson with Industrial & Textile Supply Company. A man who enjoyed working in his yard and playing with his grandchildren, Mr. Stephenson was a member of the John Fries Sunday School Class and was Elder Emeritus at Amity Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Thursday, February 1, at Amity Presbyterian Church, with Reverend William J. Youmans officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be sent to Amity Presbyterian Church, 2831 North Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC 28205.

The family would like to thank the A Wing Staff at the Brian Center for their loving care for Mr. Stephenson during his stay with them.

Taylor, Charles Howard
Charles Howard Taylor, 79, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Matthews, NC, and Claysville, PA, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 in Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born February 5, 1921, in Washington, PA, he was a son of the late Marion Taylor and Madaline Davis Taylor, of Washington.

He was a member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church, Matthews, NC.

Mr. Taylor was a veteran of World War II, having served the U.S. Navy as a Seaman, First Class gunner, in the Pacific Theater.

He was employed as a natural gas line construction foreman for Loftis Construction, Charlotte, NC until his retirement in 1997.

Mr. Taylor was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charlotte, NC.

He was married to Evelyn "Betty" Clutter Taylor, who died in 1991. Surviving are a daughter, Jill L. Taylor, of Charlotte, NC; a brother, Marion "Ralph" Taylor, of Brook Park, OH; three sisters, Hilda Danley, of Claysville, Janet Wilkestrom, of Chapel Hill, NC and Virginia Rapp, of Washington, and a grandson, John "Jack" Taylor of Charlotte.

Deceased in addition to his father and wife are a son, Jack Taylor, a brother, Robert Taylor, and a sister who died in infancy.

Services and interment will take place in Claysville, PA. Arrangements by Michael H. Heinrich Funeral Home, Claysville, PA.

Watson, Laura Cheynne
Laura Cheynne Watson, infant daughter of Thomas W. Watkins and Tracy Lynn Kelly Watson, died Monday, January 29, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 1, 2001 at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel with Reverend Mike Whited officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 7-8:30 PM at the funeral home.

Other survivors include step father, Johnson Watson of Monroe; maternal grandparents, Terry and William Kelly of Newton, NC; maternal great grandparents, Maxine and Dave Williams of Lenoir, NC; maternal great grandmother, Laura Kelly of Co.; paternal grandparents, Thomas R. Watkins, Jr. and Denise Watkins of Monroe; great grandfather, Thomas R. Watkins, Sr. of Charlotte; and paternal great grandmother, Rose Martin of Monroe; 5 siblings, Jessica, Christopher, Sierrah, Thomas Jr. and Tristan; step grandparents, Thurman and Frances Watson; aunt, Jennifer Newton and husband, Bobby of Indiana; and aunt, Heather Watkins of Charlotte.

Everybody dreams of Angels and we were able to hold ours.

Memorials may be made to NICU, c/o Carolinas Medical Center, 1000 Blythe Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.

Withers, Maxie H.
Mr. Maxie H. Withers, Jr., 29, of 1308 Camp Greene Street, Charlotte, NC died January 29, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 PM, Thursday, February 1, 2001 at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. John W. King officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12-12:30 PM, prior to the service at the church.

Surviving him are his mother, Linda J. Withers; father, Maxie H. Withers, Sr.; sisters, Sherrill Withers, Lena Withers, Danielle Withers; aunts, Verna Keith, Betty J. Drakeford; uncles, Reginald Reynolds, Fredrick Crowe; and other relatives and friends, all of Charlotte, NC.

Alexander Funeral Home is serving the Withers family.

Bolick, Dorothy Williams
BESSEMER CITY - Mrs. Dorothy Williams Bolick, 74, died Tues., Jan. 30, 2001. Funeral, 3:30 PM Thurs., Feb. 1, New Faith Bapt. Ch., Gastonia (Springwood area). Burial, Forest Lawn Cem., Chlt. Visitation 7-9 PM Wed. McLean-Bumgardner F.H.

Puckett, Edna Ruth Frederick
BESSEMER CITY - Edna Ruth Frederick Puckett, 70, of 314 E. Pennsylvania Ave. died Jan. 25, 2001.

Funeral was 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bright Light Baptist Church. Burial was in Westview Gardens.

Mrs. Puckett was born Dec. 6, 1930 in Carlisle, KY. She was a member of Bright Light Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Martha Hawse of Valley, AL, Margaret Sims and Carolyn Miller, both of Bessemer City; brothers, Perry Frederick of Fayetteville, William Frederick of Lexington, KY, Everett Frederick of Kings Mountain; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Childers, Eric Dwayne
BLACKSBURG - Mr. Eric Dwayne Childers, 20, died Jan. 28, 2001. A celebration of life service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at South Gastonia Church of God. White Columns funeral service is in charge.

Sr., Loyd W. "John" Witherspoon
CHATTANOOGA, TN - Loyd W. "John" Witherspoon Sr., 86, of 7214 Ridgestone Dr., formerly of Cherryville, NC, died Jan. 27, 2001.

Funeral was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shady Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Phil Ditz officiating. Burial was in City Memorial Cemetery, Cherryville with full Military Honors. Carpenter Funeral Home, Cherryville was in charge.

Mr. Witherspoon was born in Gaston County, NC. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Crew Chief with 30 years of service. Mr. Witherspoon was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his son, Dr. Loyd William "Bill" Witherspoon Jr.; daughter, Rebecca W. Nash of Chester Springs, PA; brother, Jay Witherspoon of Cherryville; sister, Lois May of Plantation, FL; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
