Lewis, Earl Clyde
GASTONIA - Mr. Earl Clyde Lewis, Sr., 86, 801 St. Michael's Lane, died February 2, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Lewis was a native of Gastonia, NC and was the son of the late Robert Dixonand Maude Hasketet Lewis. He was preceded in death by his first wife Rachel Holland Lewis. He retired from Western & Southern Insurance Company, and was a former employee of the Gastonia Gazette. Mr. Lewis was a former member of First United Methodist Church. Mr. Lewis later became a member of Union Presbyterian Church and was active in the choir, and was a Sunday School Teacher.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Lucy Alexander Lewis, a son, Mr. Earl C. Lewis, Jr. and wife Sue, of Gastonia; brother, Alfred Lewis, Charlotte, NC, sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth L. and Bob Bullock of Alexanderia, VA, Ruth L. Barron and Paul of Alexandria, VA, and sister, Midge L. Britt of Spartanburg, SC; two grandchildren, Debbie L. Rudisill and Patrick E. Lewis and two step-grandchildren, Walter B. Ratchford and Gene Ratchford, 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral is 2 p.m. today at Union Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. James Cockerham, officiating and Rev. Dr. Wanda Neely, assisting. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park Cemetery, Gastonia.

Memorials may be made to Union Presbyterian Church, 5615 Union Road, Gastonia, NC 28056 or the Juvenille Diabetes Association, 1012 S. Kings Drive, Charlotte, NC 28207.

Raxter, Hayward `Rex' Dillard
GASTONIA - Hayward `Rex' Dillard Raxter, 71, died Fri., February 2. Memorial service is 7 p.m. Monday at Victory Baptist Church and 2 p.m. Feb. 11, at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Hickory. The Rev. Rex Adkins will be officiating. Visitation is 6-7 p.m. Monday at Victory Baptist Church.

He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Airforce Veteran who served in the Korean War. He was a security Guard for Wix Corp. He was a member of the VFW and he worked at the DeTox center with the AAA.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society of Gaston County, 220 E. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC 28052.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Dillard and Millie Turbyville Raxter.

He is survived by his wife, Corrinne Coe Raxter of the home; four sounds, three daughters, 11 grandchildren, brother, Bob Raxter of Gastonia, sisters, Judy Ferebee of Hickory, Jeralene Raxter of Gastonia, and Glenda Anthony of Gastonia.

Fox, Anna Mae
GRANITE FALLS - Anna Mae Fox, age 83, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barnes, Amelia
HAMLET - Mrs. Amelia Barnes, 68, died Sunday, February 4, 2001. Arrangements are incomplete at Nelson Funeral Home.

Coble, Phillip Dwight
HAMLET - Phillip Dwight Coble, Jr., 19, died Friday. Funeral will be Tuesday at the the St. Paul United Methodist Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. tonight from the Marks Funeral Home.

Lingafelt, Eula Smith
HICKORY - Mrs. Eula Smith Lingafelt, 79, died February 2, 2001. Funeral was 2 p.m. Sunday at Mackie-High Funeral Home. Visitation was Saturday at the funeral home.

Woodruff, Edfard Monroe
HICKORY - Edfard Monroe Woodruff, 80, died Feb. 3, 2001. There will be no services. Private burial will be held in Catawba Memorial Park. Catawba Funeral Home of Hickory, NC is serving the family.

Cline, Marie Ada Benfield
HUDSON - Marie Ada Benfield Cline, age 76, died Saturday, February 3, 2001. Funeral is 4 p.m. Monday at Friendship Baptist Church. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Patterson, Myrtle Cline
KANNAPOLIS - Mrs. Myrtle Cline Patterson, 93, died Sunday, February 4, 2001. Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. Visitation is 6:30-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Howell, Judy McGinnis
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Judy McGinnis Howell, 41, died February 3, 2001. Funeral is 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Monday at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.

Everett Bogan Baker
LANCASTER - Services for Everett Bogan Baker, 82, of Lancaster will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Lancaster, conducted by Reverend Roy Barnes, with burial in Lancaster Memorial Park. Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Baker died Sunday, February 4, 2001 at Wilson Medical Center, Darlington, SC. Born in Jefferson, SC, he was a son of the late Edgar Bogan and Nellie Mae Sullivan Baker. He was a retired insurance salesman, a former member of the Lancaster Lions Club, a World War II Army Air Corps Veteran and a member of First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife, Ottie Lee Gardner Baker; his daughter, Mrs. Bonnie (Drew) Hamilton of Hartsville, SC; and three grandchildren, Andy Hamilton of Lake City, Gwen Hamilton Diehl of Charleston, and Blair Hamilton of Hartsville.

McFadyen, Maxine R. M.
LAURINBURG - Mrs. Maxine R. M. McFadyen, 67, died Saturday, February 3, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Boles Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Feb. 6, 2001 at Boles Funeral Home.

Alexander, Idell Shook
LENOIR - Idell Shook Alexander, 90, died Feb. 3, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Pendry's Funeral Home.

Guckenbiehl, Edwin Charles
LENOIR - Edwin Charles Guckenbiehl, 84, died Friday, February 2, 2001. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Monday at the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Countryside Drive. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barker, Amis Monroe
LEXINGTON - Amis Monroe Barker, 66, died February 4, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Arrangements by Piedmont Funeral Home.

Pegram, Walter Milton `Tot"
LILESVILLE - Mr. Walter Milton `Tot" Pegram, Sr., 73, died Sunday, February 4, 2001 at his home.

He was born in Anson County, May 1, 1927, a son of the late Lee and Lillie Russell Pegram.

Mr. Pegram was a retired truck driver, having worked for Consolidated Trucking in Charlotte for more than twenty years, and prior worked for Charles Ratliff Trucking in Morven, and was a member of Forestville United Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Mr. Pegram will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 6, 2001 in Forestville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Winchester and Rev. Larry Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will greet friend tonight (Monday) 7-8:30 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro.

Surviving are his wife Kitty of the home; his children, Milton Pegram, Jr. of Lilesville, Jeff Pegram of Atlanta, GA, and Jeanne Pegram Zentmeyer of Kannapolis; his grandchildren, Todd Pegram of Charlotte, Michelle McRae of Lilesville, Zac Pegram of Charlotte and Lillie Zentmeyer of Kannapolis; his great-grandchildren, Ashley and Natalie Pegram both of Wadesboro; his brother and sister, Eddie (Bill) Pegram of Wadesboro and Sadie Walker of High Point.

Also surviving are his step-children; Kathy East and Mike Lisk both of Rockingham and Brian Bunn of Concord; and step-grandchildren, Ashley Lisk and Chris Nettles both of Rockingham.

Memorials may be made to Forestville United Methodist Church, PO Box 452, Lilesville, NC 28091 or to Hospice of Anson County, 117 Worthham St., Wadesboro, NC 28170.

The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro.

Helms, Frank
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Frank Helms, Jr., 74, of 1424 Redbud Road in Lincolnton died Saturday, February 3, 2001 at Lincoln Medical Center in Lincolnton. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday February 5, 2001 at Southside Baptist Church where he was a member with the Rev. Keith Chronister officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Southside Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Helms was born on July 19, 1926 in Lincoln County, son of the late Frank and Emma Lewis Helms, Sr., Mr. Helms was a builder and contractor and also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also preceded in death by a sister Dot, and brothers Jack and Bob Helms.

Mr. Helms is survived by his wife, Gerlene Chapman Helms of the home; six sisters, Hester Byers of Rock Hill, SC; Katherine Kirby of Charlotte; Betty Jean Buser of Franklin, NC, Gwen and Pearl Helms of Lincolnton; and Phyllis Hawley of Stanley.

Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1725 Southside Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Hobbs, Kathleen Measmer
MOORESVILLE - Kathleen Measmer Hobbs, 77, died Feb. 3, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Community Baptist Church. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. tonight at Neill Funeral Home. Neill Funeral Home is in charge.

Edwards, Clifton O'Brien
MT. GILEAD - Mr. Clifton O'Brien Edwards, Sr., 73, died February 4, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Chris Cadenhead and Rev. Kennyon Edwards. Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Edwards Funeral Home, Norwood, NC.

He was last employed by J.B. Watson Accounting Firm, Wadesboro, NC.

He was born December 1, 1927, son of the late Otis Erwin & Laura Harrison Edwards and was a WWII Navy Veteran. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead where he had served as Deacon and Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was a member of Blackmer Lodge #127 and The Order of the Eastern Star Mt. Gilead Chapter #124. He had served as a Worthy Patron and District Deputy Grand Patron.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Blake Edwards of the home; son, Clifton O. Edwards, Jr., of Mocksville, NC; daughters, Barbara Edwards Ruark of Winston-Salem and Laura Edwards Morton of Raleigh, NC; brothers, James E. Edwards of Gainesville, FL, Rev. Kennyon Edwards of Ann Arbor, MI, and Ray Edwards of Mt. Gilead, NC; sister, Christine Edwards Sime of Orlando, FL; and 6 grandchildren.

Sherrill, Margaret Woosley
NEWTON - Mrs. Margaret Woosley Sherrill, 77, died January 30, 2001. Funeral was at Mackie-High Funeral Home.

Bailey, Carlos Greene `C.G."
PATRICK - Mr. Carlos Greene `C.G." Bailey, 81, died February 3, 2001. Graveside service is 11 a.m. Monday at Patrick Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Bailey residence following the service.

Clayton, Elwood Clamon
RICHFIELD - Elwood Clamon Clayton, 75, died Saturday, February 3, 2001 at Stanly Memorial Hospital. He was born May 29, 1925 in Stanly County the son of the late Ina Hicks Clayton and Ernest C. Clayton. He was the retired owner and operator of Clayton's Grocery, Richfield, NC. He was a member of the Albemarle Lions Club; a member and past president of the Stanly County Chapter of the Federation of the Blind.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2001 at Richfield Baptist Church by the Rev. C. Eugene Carroll. Burial will be in Richfield Cemetery, Richfield, NC.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Miller Clayton of Richfield, NC; son, Richard `Dick" Clayton of Norwood, NC; and daughter, Jane Clayton Huneycutt of Albemarle; 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Stanly County Federation of the Blind, c/o Mrs. Carrie Smith, 32597 Pennington Road, Albemarle, NC 28001.

The family will be at his home, 24817 Miller Road, Richfield, NC 28137.
