Arronson, Myron B. "Mike"
Myron B. "Mike" Arronson, who died Monday at the age of 81, had always dreamed of sailing around the world, but romance of another sort thwarted his plans.

The co-owner of a chain of shoe stores in New York City and an avid sailor, Mike had bought a 45-foot boat that he named Delilah, had it outfitted for ocean going and even lived on it for three months, preparing for his dream voyage. Then he met non-sailor Jane Stauffer Davidson in 1980 and changed his mind. Instead they sailed Long Island Sound and he and Jane were married on January 8, 1983 in New York City.

After Mike retired in 1982, they moved to St. Simons Island in Georgia where they stayed six years before moving to Charlotte.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 30, 1919, to George and Esther Hoffman Arronson, Mike received his B.S. in business administration from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army in June 1940 and switched to the Air Force in 1945 as a captain, serving with the 8th Air Force in Europe.

After the war, he and his brother Jules established their shoe store business and eventually expanded into New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. Mike sold most of his portion of the business in 1982 when he retired as chief executive officer.

Mike's hobby always had been sailing and he bought his first sailboat in 1947, owning nearly a dozen throughout his lifetime. He earned a Master's License from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1980, and in February 2000 he received a testimonial of appreciation for 50 years of service by the U.S. Power Squadron, Sail and Power Boating. He taught and assisted in many courses in boating in New York and at Lake Norman.

In addition to his wife, Jane, and his brother, Jules of Palm Beach, Florida, Mike is survived by two daughters, Sue Ellen Ferren of Paducah, Kentucky, and Dr. Judith Siegel of San Jose, CA; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
