Bennett, Nena Ione Berry
Mrs. Nena Ione Berry Bennett, 94, died Feb. 12, 2001. Funeral services will be 2 PM Wed. at Carothers Funeral Home. Burial in Forest Lawn West. Visitation is 7-9 PM Tonight at the funeral home.

Blackwell, Thomas Edward
Mr. Thomas Edward Blackwell, 87, formerly of Charlotte died February 9, 2001 at Fifth Avenue Health Care, Rome Georgia. He was the loving husband of Virginia "Ginny" McGaha Blackwell who preceded him in death on December 11, 2000. They were married for 67 years.

Mr. Blackwell was a World War II veteran and retired from the United States Navy in 1962. He retired from a second career as regional sales manager with Sylvania Electronics before retiring to Boiling Spring Lakes, NC.

Mr. Blackwell was a Mason, HAM Radio Operator, avid golfer, and had traveled extensively nationally and internationally. In 1928, he caddied for Gene Sarazan and Bobby Jones in Tryon, NC where he was born and raised. He will be buried in Arlington Cemetery, Washington, DC with military honors.

He is survived by his daughters, Carole Merriam and husband Bob of Charlotte, Deb Ledbetter and husband Terry of Rome, GA; Lynn Story and husband Winn of Flowery Branch, GA; and son Thomas Blackwell II and wife, Terry of Lithonia, GA; grandchildren, Janet Friend, Christy Kendrick, Shelley Womack, Bobby Merriam, Ashley Ledbetter, David Carver, Jenny Blackwell and Tommy Blackwell; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to United Hospice of Calhoun, 1195 Curtis Parkway, Calhoun, GA 30701.

Brady, Matthew Peter
Matthew Peter Brady, 17, of Charlotte, died Sunday, February 11, 2001.

Born August 17, 1983, in Boston, MA, Matthew was a senior at Myers park High School and a student at Central Piedmont community college. Matthew possessed a genuine thirst for knowledge and was passionate about poetry and playwriting. He was also active in theater, Taekwondo, Odyssey of the Mind, Dead Poets Society, and various sports. Gentle, kind, and giving, Matthew will be remembered for the zeal he put into his friendships and any activity in which he participated.

Matthew is survived by his father, Glen Brady, of Mandeville, Louisiana; his mother and step-father, Linda Call & Dr. Kenneth Call of Charlotte; brother, Michael Brady and sister, Kristen Brady, both of Charlotte; grandparent, Paula Killelea of Quincy, MA, Peter Killelea of Naples, FL, Cedella Brady of Weymouth, MA and beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00am Thursday, February 15, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church by the Monsignor John J. McSweeney. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-9pm at Hankins & Whittington funeral service, Dilworth Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are sent in memory of Matthew Brady to the Arts & Sciences Council, 227 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC 28202. Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard.

Colonna, Peter J.
Peter J. Colonna, Jr., 53, of Charlotte, NC, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at his residence.

Peter was born October 22, 1947 in floral Park, New York, a son of Peter Joseph Colonna, Sr. and the late Margaret Tudor Colonna. He was a 1970 graduate of Clarkson University in Potsdan, NY, where he received an Industrial and Engineering and Accounting degree. He worked with Royal and Sunalliance Insurance Co. for 30 years where he most recently served as compliance auditor for the legal and regulatory departments. Peter was also a Royal Guard with Royal and Sunalliance, honor bestowed to associates of the company representing 25 years of service. He was a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol while living in New Jersey.

He had been a resident of Charlotte for fourteen years and served on the Board of Directors with the Alzheimer's Association and was a Den Leader and fund raiser for the Boy Scouts of America. Peter served on the Providence Plantation Home Owner's Association.

A service to celebrate the life of Peter will be held 11:00 AM Friday, February 16, 2001 from the Pineville Chapel of McEwen funeral service, 10500 park Road. committal will follow in Forest Lawn East Cemetery, Matthews, following the service. Friends may call on the Colonna Family Thursday, February 15, from 2:00 until 4:00 and again from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Peter is survived by his wife, of twenty-five years, Marie E. Colonna of Charlotte; a son, Peter Joseph Colonna, III (UNCW), Wilmington, NC; father, Peter Joseph Colonna, Sr. of Jupiter, FL; brother, John Colonna of Miami, FL; mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Jarotsky of Huntersville and many friends who will remember Peter for his generous and helping spirit and sense of humor.

Memorials may be made in remembrance of Peter J. Colonna, Jr. to The Alzheimer's Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

Courtney, John Frank
Mr. John Frank Courtney, Jr., 60, of Charlotte, died Saturday, February 10, 2001 at New England Medical Center in Boston, MA while awaiting a bone marrow transplant.

Born November 25, 1940 in Rock Hill, SC, Mr. Courtney was a son of the late John F. Courtney, Sr. and Essie Simpson Courtney. He has been a resident of Charlotte since the age of fourteen and graduated from Myers Park High School in 1959. He began service in the military in the US Marines and later in the US Navy. While in the Navy, Mr. Courtney served on the USS Topeka and continued his association with his USS Topeka comrades by attending reunions and personal correspondence through the years.

Mr. Courtney, who was a branch manager with Wachovia for many years, was a member of SouthPark Christian Church, and especially enjoyed an avid association with the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

He is survived by his children, Jeff and Andrea Courtney of Sarasota, FL; a brother, Thomas Courtney and wife, Julie of Charlotte; one sister, Patricia Youngblood and husband, Bo, of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Racheal and Dylan Courtney; his former wife and friend, Becky Courtney; niece and nephew; and great niece and great nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, February 14, at SouthPark Christian Church, 6650 Park South Drive, with the Reverend Dr. Jerry Whitt officiating. Interment will be in Grand View Memorial Park in Rock Hill. Mr. Courtney's family will receive friends from 2-3 PM Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Leukemia Society of America, NC Chapter, 5624 Executive Center Dr., Charlotte, NC 28212.

Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington, Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Blvd.

Davis, Wilma Fay Borow
Wilma Fay Borow Davis, died Sunday, February 11, 2001 at Sunrise on Providence Assisted Living Community. Mrs. Davis was born in 1908 in Rocheser, New York, the daughter of the late, Florence Bauer Fay and Dr. Jay Wharton Fay. After attending Eastman School, she graduated from Louisville Girls School in Kentucky. A half century later, Mrs. Davis graduated from Goddard College in Vermont. Wilma Fay's interest in the medical field was expressed in her early years by hospital training and volunteer work. She also played cello, french horn, clarinet, recorder, bells, violin and piano, participating in symphony, opera and chamber concerts as well as string quartets and piano trios in nursing homes. She enjoyed teaching music privately to children while living in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Wilma Fay enthusiastically applied her librarian skills to each community in which she lived. Later, she combined her literary and classical music background to become music librarian for several choirs while in her last decades in Westfield, New Jersey. An inveterate traveler, she backpacked to Britain, Europe, China and Tibet in later life.

Wilma Fay was predeceased by husbands, Dr. Louis S. Borow and David O. Davis.

Survivors include daughters, Ivy Reade Relkin and husband, Rabbi Stanley Relkin, of Brooklyn, New York and Anne Fay Yudell and her husband, Dr. Robert Yudell, of Charlotte, North Carolina and son, David Fay Davis, of Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Granddaughters, Nancy Yudell Segal, Wendy Rose and husband, Sandy Rose, of Charlotte, Dr. Sherry Yudell and husband, Charles Weber, of Oak Park, California and Emily Freudenberger and husband, Dr. Ronald Freudenberger, of Baltimore, Maryland; great grandchildren, Adam Segal, Mark Segal, Sarah Rose and Nina Rose, of Charlotte and Eva Freudenberger, of Baltimore.

Thursday, February 15, 2001, 6:00 PM, a memorial service will be in the Chapel at Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Road.

There will be a private graveside service at Hillside Cemetery in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Grant, Curtis Wayne
Mr. Curtis Wayne Grant, 56, died Sunday, February 11, 2001, at Brunswick Community Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete. Raymer Funeral Home in Huntersville is serving the family of Mr. Grant.

Grant, Leroy
Mr. Leroy Grant, 38, of 2704 Rozzelles Ferry Road, Charlotte, NC died February 9, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at Richmond Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Beatties Ford Memorial Garden, Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Surviving him are his father, Mr. Willie Grant, Jr. of Charlotte; and his mother, Mrs. Geneva W. Grant of Charlotte.

Harris, Elaine Overcash
Elaine Overcash Harris, 64, formerly of Beth Page Rd., Kannapolis, NC, was currently living in Huntersville, died Sunday, February 11, 2001 at 2:10 PM at her home in Huntersville, NC after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at BethPage Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, NC, with Dr. Steven Mowery and Rev. Clarence Eden officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Born August 12, 1936 in Cabarrus Co., she was a daughter of the late Carl Seaford Overcash and Ruby Bostian Overcash of Kannapolis, NC. She was a lifelong area resident; member of BethPage Presbyterian Church; attended Charlotte College for 2 years; and was employed with the Independent-Tribune for 38 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela H. Deal and husband, Brent of Huntersville, NC; son, Rodney Q. Harris and wife, Lisa of Wrightsville Beach, NC; daughter, Renee Harris of Concord, NC; daughter, Cindy Harris of Huntersville, NC; 3 grandchildren, Phillip Deal, Carly Deal & Andrew Harris; mother, Ruby Bostian Overcash of Kannapolis, NC; sister, Alice Tarlton of Kannapolis, NC; and brother, Ted Overcash of Spartanburg, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204.

Littlejohn, Nelson Casey
Nelson Casey Littlejohn, of 9349 Lawing School Rd., Charlotte, N.C. died Sun., Feb. 11, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete. Newton Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Melaragno, Michele G.
Dr. Michele G. Melaragno, 72, retired Professor of Architecture and Building Sciences at UNCC, died February 10, 2001 from complications of diabetes. Born October 25, 1928 in Rome Italy, he earned his Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Bari, Italy in 1959.

That year he came to the U.S. and resided in Providence, RI where he became a practicing professional engineer. Later, his teaching career included Kansas State University, Clemson University and from 1974-1999, the University of NC at Charlotte. Dr. Melaragno was a prolific author whose numerous books were published internationally. His publications in professional journals covered a wide spectrum in civil engineering and, with his wife Deborah, he traveled to many countries to present his papers at architectural and engineering symposia.

Dr. Melaragno's achievements were extraordinary particularly because he was totally blind for many of his working years. He was defined by perseverance and adaptability. With his beautiful shepherd guide dog, Fillmore, and later his golden retriever, Cinnamon, he was a memorable figure on the UNCC campus and throughout Charlotte.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. James Plonk for his long-time medical care, those at Metrolina Kidney Center, the pool therapists at Presbyterian, their steadfast neighbors and the people at Barclays Cafeteria for including us in their family.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah; three children by his first marriage: Patricia Broggi of Miami, Fl., Beth Malachowski of San Diego, CA, Mark Melaragno of Charlotte; and two grandchildren. He is survived also by three sisters in Rome, Italy: Marisa Dodero, Graziella D'Avosa and Lucianna Melaragno.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, February 15 at 2:00 PM at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1400 Suther Rd. A reception will follow.

Miller, James E.
Mr. James E. Miller, son of the late Plyer Miller and Tossie Lucy Massey Miller was born on September 18, 1918. He departed this life on Sunday, February 11, 2001 at White Oak Manor of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Marvin A.M.E. Zion church, Waxhaw, NC, with Rev. Henrico White officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at the church.

James attended the Union County public schools, served in the United States Army, and retired from Amp Incorporated. He was a lifelong and faithful member of Marvin A.M.E. Zion Church where he served as a member of the Trustee Board, Steward Board, Usher Board, Class Leader and Sunday School superintendent. He also served on the Wadesboro-Monroe District level as President of The District Usher Board and Treasurer of the Lay Council.

Two sisters and one brother, Nancy Vinson, Luida Miller and Bozzy Miller preceded James in death.

James leaves to cherish his loving wife, Mrs. Illa Mae Hudson Augustus Miller; two sons, Michael Sims of Charlotte, NC and Jory Bennett of Baltimore, MD. James was thought of as a loving step-father to 9 children, 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters, Meacy M. Jackson of Charlotte, NC and Mildred Keiser (Clayton) of Providence, RI and a host of loving nephews, nieces and many other devoted relatives and friends.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
