BANNER ELK -- Miss Lila Pearl McLean, 94, died March 26, 2001. Funeral 2 pm today, Foscoe Christian Church, Boone; interment, McLean Cemetery, Banner Elk. Visitation 1-2 pm today at the church. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in charge.

Miller, Lloyd I.
BESSEMER CITY -- Lloyd I. Miller, 79, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia. A native of Essex County, Mass, he was son of the late Lloyd G. and Dorothy Remsen Miller. He attended Union Road Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, was a member of VFW-Absher-Flowers Post #9337, and the Last Man's Club of Gastonia. He was retired from the U.S. Military with the rank of 1st Lt., having served in the Army and the Air Force as a pilot. He served in World War II and was a Prisoner of War in Germany for a year.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Frost Silva Miller; son, Matthew Kerns of Bessemer City; daughters and sons-in-law, Judith Elaine and Robert Lee Woody of Belmont and Dawn E. and David M. Miller of Bessemer City; brother, Gordon Miller of Fla.; sister and spouse, Marjorie and Edward Pedersen of Fla; grandchildren, David and Robert Keck II, Ginger Flynn, David and Rebecca Miller; and great-grandchild, Kassidy Flynn.

Graveside services with full military honors by the Bessemer City American Legion Honor Guard, will be held at 2pm Friday at Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery, Rev. Don Capell officiating.

Sisk-Butler Funeral Home of Bessemer City is in charge of the arrangements.

Norris, Hubert S.
BOONE -- Mr. Hubert S. Norris, 90, died March 25, 2001. Funeral was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hampton Funeral Home. Entombment was in Mount Lawn Mausoleum.

Barrett, Pauline Huffstickler
CHERRYVILLE -- Pauline Huffstickler Barrett, 89, of Cherryville, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Mrs. Barrett was a native of Gaston County, North Carolina, daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Huffstickler and Eliza Barber Huffstickler. She was preceded in death by her brothers Artie Huffstickler and Ben Huffstickler, and her sister, Lottie Hartsell. Mrs. Barrett was a homemaker, and a member of Linden A.R. Presbyterian Church for over 60 years.

Survivors include her husband, James Austin Barrett; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Phyllis Barrett of Waynesville, NC; son Wayne Barrett of Lake Wylie, SC; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Teresa Barrett of Lincolnton, NC; daughter Mrs. Merlin B. Boling of Salisbury, NC; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will at at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Linden A.R. Presbyterian Church with Rev. Phillip McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 5-6:30pm at McLean Funeral Directors.

Memorials may be made to Linden A.R. Presbyterian Church, 205 South Myrtle School Road, Gastonia, NC 28052.

Newton, Bennett Leon
CHERRYVILLE -- Bennett Leon Newton, 80, of 405 South Kenwood Avenue, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at his residence. He was born March 4, 1921 in Gaston County, NC, son of Mamie Moss Newton and the late Ben Dixon Newton. He was a retired long-line driver, had been employed by Carolina Freight Carriers Corp. of Cherryville, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cherryville.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Anthony Newton, of the home; daughter and son-in-law Merinda N. Arthurs and husband, Steve `Spunk` Arthurs of Cherryville; mother, Mamie Moss Newton of Cherryville; sisters Imogene Beam, Margaret Beam and Betty Bame, all of Cherryville; grandchildren Andrew Stephen `Andy` Arthurs and Danielle Merinda Arthurs, both of Cherryville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The body will be taken to the home at 405 South Kenwood Avenue on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 and the family will receive friends from 4-7pm. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001 at City Memorial Cemetery, Cherryville, followed by burial. Rev. Perry Holleman and Rev. Jack H. Cooke will officiate.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 301 East First Street, Cherryville, NC 28021.

CLAREMONT -- Mr. Worth Dare Bandy, 79, died March 25, 2001. Memorial service is 5 p.m. Thursday at Piney Grove Baptist Church. Catawba Funeral Home, Hickory is in charge.

English, Ross Eugene
DENVER -- Mr. Ross Eugene English, 70, died March 27, 2001. Funeral is 4 pm Thursday, Providence Baptist Church, interment with military rites in church cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 pm tonight at church. Burke Mortuaries in charge.

Ferguson, Rosa Myrtice
DURHAM -- Mrs. Rosa Myrtice Ferguson, 85, died March 26, 2001. Graveside service is 12 noon Thursday at Stories Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8pm Wednesday (tonight) at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel.

Timmons, Sidney `Sid` Kenneth
FORT LAWN -- Mr. Sidney `Sid` Kenneth Timmons, 67, died March 27, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center of Rock Hill.

funeral service is 1 pm Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church Chapel, with the Reverend Tom Tucker officiating and Reverend Jim Neal assisting. Interment will be in the Provident Baptist Church Cemetery of Kershaw at 3 pm Thursday. The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm this evening at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, and at other times at the home, 1260 East Creek Road, Fort Lawn, SC.

A son of the late Mark Roy Timmons and Juanita Williams Timmons, Mr. Timmons was a retired businessman and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a loving and caring father.

Surviving are his wife, Roselle Roberts Timmons of Fort Lawn; three sons, Keith Timmons of Richmond Hill, GA, Randy Timmons of York, and Gerald Timmons of Fort Lawn, SC; three daughters, Pam Cook of Roseboro, NC, and Juanita and Barbara Kay Catoe, both of Fort Lawn; five brothers, Douglas Timmons of Greer, SC, Waylon Timmons, Joe Lee Timmons, Timmy Timmons and Sammy Timmons, all of Rock Hill; seven sisters, Martha Ann Cook of Camden, SC, Louise Adkins of Forest City, NC, Claudette Gordon of Monroe, NC, Hazel Austin of York, SC, Gail Blackmon, Alyce Tothcrow, Kay Ayers and Loretta Shiveley, all of Rock Hill; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Cox, Esta Faye Bunn
GEORGETOWN -- Esta Faye Bunn Cox, 63, wife of Stacy Edward Cox, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 in a Georgetown hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Cox was born in Fancy Gap, VA, a daughter of the late Garland Chester Bunn and the late Minnie Inez Hall Bunn. She was the most wonderful mother in the world, attended Rose Hill Baptist Church and was a graduate of Hillsville High School in Hillsville, VA.

Surviving are her husband, Stacy Edward Cox of the home; five daughters, Regina Williams of Wytheville, VA, Carolyn Viar of Christiansburg, Va, Dana Herman of Plantation, FL, Jill Ward of Galax, VA and Judy Stoneham of Huntersville, NC; 13 grandchildren; six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11am Thursday, March 29, 2001 in the Vaughn-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsville, VA, with burial in the Independence Church Cemetery in Fancy Gap, VA.

Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, Texas 75265-0309.

Summers, Herschel Radford
HARRISBURG -- Mr. Herschel Radford Summers, Jr., 62, of 3877 Mellisa Drive, Harrisburg, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at St. Josephs Memorial Hospital, Asheville, NC. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Hartsell Funeral Home-Concord, Rev. H. Wayne Deaton officiating. Burial will be in Charlotte Memorial Gardens, Charlotte. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7-9pm.

Born February 10, 1939 in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Herschel Radford Summers, Sr., a truck driver, was employed by Collins & Aikman, and was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Summers of Harrisburg; daughters Donna Lynn Morgan of Belding, MI and Tamara Presson of Cornelius, NC; sons Alan Wayne Summers of Concord, NC, Nathaniel Wade Summers of Locust, NC, Timmy Ray Summers of Monroe, NC, and Michael Treadway of Concord, NC; brothers Jimmie Lester Summers of Belding, MI and Walter Raymond Summers of Colonial, VA; sister Linda Summers of Wilmington, NC; and 10 grandchildren.

Hartsell Funeral Home-Concord is serving the family of Mr. Summers.

McKissick, Willie Louis
JONESVILLE -- Mr. Willie Louis McKissick, 74, died March 26, 2001. Funeral is 3 pm Thursday, Mark Hill Baptist Church, Jonesville, SC, interment to follow in church cemetery. Public viewing is 11 am to 7 pm today, Union Community Funeral Home, and again 1 hour prior to service at the church. Mr. McKissick is a brother of the Reverend Warren McKissick of Charlotte, NC. MARSTON -- Mr. Hubert Alton Lathan, age 84, 176 Beaver Dam Ch. Rd, died March 27, 2001 at First Health Moore Reg. Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Marks Funeral Home, Rockingham, NC.

Linker, Laura Mae Riley
MIDLAND -- Mrs. Laura Mae Riley Linker, 77, died March 27, 2001. Funeral is 2 pm Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord, interment in Carolina Park. Visitation is 7-9 pm tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord.

Moore, Edsel Carpenter `Edd`
MONROE -- Mr. Edsel Carpenter `Edd` Moore, 66, of Monroe, died Monday, March 26, 2001 in Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro. He was born in Union County, NC on May 18, 1934 son of the late Curtis and Emma Carpenter Moore. He was the owner of Church Furnishings, Inc.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM in the Gordon Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Deese Moore; son, Steve E. Moore of Monroe; daughter, Terry Bailey of Charlottesville, Virginia; brother, Ralph Moore of Albemarle; sister, Laura Coleman of Rocky Mount; and grandchildren, Chelsey, Bryce, and Schyler Bailey and Cassey Moore.

The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Gordon funeral service.

Potter, Christopher H.
MOORESVILLE -- Mr. Christopher H. Potter, 77, of Lisa Carol Drive, died March 26, 2001 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Mooresville, with Dr. S. Edwin Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor.

Born on May 20, 1923, in Montreal, Canada, he was a son of the late Christopher T. and Gertrude Bowes Potter. Mr. Potter was a retired service manager of Pitney-Bowes, having 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the Canadian Tank Corp. Mr. Potter was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mooresville, and was a volunteer with Project Literacy US. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Mr. Potter is survived by his wife, Jacklyn E. Potter, whom he married July 13, 1946; sons, Christopher J. Potter and wife, Judi, of Sherrills Ford, Craig S. Potter and wife, Deborah, of Erie, PA, L. Jeffrey Potter of Mt. Ulla, Gerald A. Potter and wife, Tracy, of Mooresville, and Donald J. Potter of Mt. Ulla; and two grandchildren, Christopher Potter and Kimberly Potter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 249 W. McLelland Avenue, Mooresville, NC, 28115.

Cavin-Cook Funeral Home of Mooresville is serving the family of Mr. Potter.
