Shores, Carl C.
ROCKINGHAM -- Mr. Carl C. Shores, 83, formerly of 1105 Carolina Drive, Rockingham, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at Manor Care in Pinehurst. He was born September 1, 1917 in Richmond County, the son of the late Carl and Lucy Shores.

Mr. Shores was retired from the W.R. Grace Co. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was actively involved for many years.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 pm Wednesday, March 28, in First United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Flynn and Rev. Leonard Mayo officiating. Burial will follow in Richmond Memorial Park.

Surviving are daughter Susan Shores of Rockingham; sister Margaret Schaller of Decatur, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Shores was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Shores, in 1971.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 637, Rockingham, NC 28380.

Haynes, Betty Lou Sisk
SHELBY -- Mrs. Betty Lou Sisk Haynes, 70, died March 26, 2001. Graveside service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Cemetery. Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge.

Schronce, Julius Woodrow
STANLEY -- Mr. Julius Woodrow Schronce, 89, of 246 Rollingwood Lane, died March 27, 2001 at his residence.

Funeral services conducted by the Reverends Robert and Ruby Gittens will be held at 2 pm Thursday at Revival Tabernacle in Stanley. Interment will follow in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 7-9 pm Wednesday.

He was a native of Catawba County, son of the late Adolphus and Fannie Schronce, was a retired textile supervisor, and member of Revival Tabernacle in Stanley.

Survivors include his wife Nancy Morgan Schronce; two daughters, Syble Schronce Smith and husband Bob of Charlotte, and Jessie Harris and husband Ray of Raiford, FL; a son, Vernon Schronce and wife Billie of Gastonia; a brother, Jack Schronce of Mt. Holly; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Revival Tabernacle Building Fund, PO Box 307, Stanley, NC 28164.

Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mt. Holly (704-820-0608) is serving the family of Mr. Schronce.

Coolman, Paul Joseph
STATESVILLE -- Mr. Paul Joseph Coolman, 83, 105 Buckingham Pl, died Monday, 3/26. Memorial service Monday, 4/2, 10 AM Westmoreland chapel, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. Burial at later date. Vstn: following service at funeral home.

Ovcercash, Joyce Lee White
STONY POINT -- Mrs. Joyce Lee White Ovcercash, age 56, died March 26, 2001. Funeral Thurs. March 29, 2 PM Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Vstn: Wednesday, Mar. 28, 6-8 PM at the funeral home.

Corliss, Spencer Glenn
UNION, MICHIGAN -- Mr. Spencer Glenn Corliss, age 62, of 71324 Indiana Lake Road, Union, Michigan, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at his residence. A native of Leominster, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Spencer C. Corliss and Marion Johnson Corliss. For the past 18 years, Mr. Corliss was the chief pilot for Elkhart Brass Manufacturing, and prior to that was employed as Vice President, General Manager and Corporate Pilot for Riblet Corporation in Elkhart, Indiana. Mr. Corliss was a member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church in Elkhart, Indiana, and was a member of the Elkhart Elks Lodge #425.

Surviving are his wife, Rae Cowan Corliss; sons and daughters-in-law Christopher Corliss and Craig and Selina Corliss of Albany, GA, and Robert and Amy McRanie of Clearwater, FL; daughter Tammy McRanie of Tampa, FL; brothers Willard Corliss, Ronald Corliss, Martin Corliss, Bruce Corliss and Barry Corliss, all of MA; sisters Mrs. Paul Marilou Corliss Donahue of Cairo, Egypt and Madine Corliss of MA; and 5 grandchildren.

Out of state services are being handled by Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Inc., Elkhart, Indiana, and are as follows: Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Hillcrest United Methodist Church in Elkhart, Indiana. Dr. Steven Conner will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm, Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Inc., Elkhart, Indiana.

Graveside services will be held 12:30pm, Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Charlotte, NC. Reverend Jerry Cloninger will officiate. The family will have a luncheon at 2:30pm following the graveside service at Stowe's Fish Camp, 1020 Union New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC 28056.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Charlotte Chapter, 500 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Smith, Edgar Donald
VALE -- Mr. Edgar Donald Smith, 51, died March 26, 2001. Funeral is 2 pm Thursday, Corinth Baptist Church, interment to follow in church cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 pm tonight, Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Graham, Reverend Roy
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Reverend Roy Graham, 77, formerly of Great Falls, SC died March 24, 2001. Funeral Mar. 30, 11 AM Rising Mt. Zion Bapt. Ch., Wash. DC. Burial VA Cem., VA. Kings Funeral Home, Chester, SC is in charge of local announcement.

Johnston, Cleo Jones
WINSTON-SALEM -- Mrs. Cleo Jones Johnston, 84, died March 27, 2001. Funeral is 11 am Thursday, Unity Baptist Church, burial in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 10-11 am prior to service. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge.

Floyd Kenneth Milem
YORK -- Mr. Floyd Kenneth Milem Sr., 71, of 1778 Sutton Springs Rd. died March 26, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. James Barnes and Rev. Harold Walters officiating. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel.

Mr. Milem was a native of Kannapolis. He was a retired truck driver with moss Trucking in Charlotte. He was the former owner of Parkwood Appliance Services and formerly worked at the Cannon Mills Plant #1 finishing department in Kannapolis. He was former treasurer of the Parkwood Sanitary District. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.

Mr. Milem was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Deacons, Sunday School Director and teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Greene Milem of the home; two sons, Floyd "Ken" Milem Jr. and Keith H. Milem, both of York; two daughters, Cassandra M. Torrence of York and Capricia M. Fox of Smyrna, SC; two brothers, Ray Milem and Marvin Milem, both of Kannapolis; his sister, Dorothy M. Branham of China Grove; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Parkinson Foundation, 1501 North West 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.

Anderson, Alice R.
Miss Alice R. Anderson, 77, died March 27, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Grier Funeral Home is in charge.

Cooper, The Reverend Thomas Moore
The Reverend Thomas Moore Cooper, 89, of 5800 Old Providence Road, Charlotte, N.C., died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the Carriage Club of Charlotte. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 31, 2001 in the Carriage Club Auditorium. Interment will be private for the family. The family will greet friends following the memorial service at the Carriage Club. Harry and Bryant Company is serving his family.

Dellinger, Edgar Troutman
Edgar Troutman Dellinger, Sr., 66, of Pineville, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Lakeview Living Center. He was born August 24, 1934, in Lincoln County, NC to the late Ralph Troutman and Willie Louise Wilson Dellinger.

The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday, March 30, at Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center, 5505 Monroe Road, with a Memorial Service to follow at 8:00 P.M.

Mr. Dellinger was raised in Lincoln County and had resided in Florida. He married Otie Harbin in 1960 while living in Florida. Edgar moved to Charlotte in 1964 and was a self-employed appliance technician.

In addition to his wife, Otie of the home, he is survived by; sons Edgar T. Dellinger, Jr. and Richard G. Dellinger, both of Pineville; and granddaughter, Kayla Ashley Dellinger.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice.

Gravely, Colleen `Sue` Abernathy
Colleen `Sue` Abernathy Gravely, -- 65, of 2915 Tuckaseegee Road, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Integrated Health Services. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Russell.

Survivors include a brother, Bert Wansley and his wife, Barbara, of Cramerton; five cousins, Velma T. Karriker, of Hiddenite, NC, Benny and Charles Miller, both of Mt. Holly, Richard Abernathy, of Stanley, and Doris Abernathy of Florida; an aunt, Helen Abernathy of Mt. Holly; and special friends, Wanda Helms, Margaret Locklear, and Pat Caston.

A graveside service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 375 Woodlawn Avenue, Mt. Holly, from 2-4 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Helms, W. Wray
Mr. W. Wray Helms, age 82, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital. funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Friday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel with Doctor Jeff Pinkston and Reverend Jen Fox officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. A Masonic Service will be at 6:00 PM Thursday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel by West Gate Masonic Lodge, with visitation to follow until 8:00 PM. Mr. Helms was born November 6, 1918 in Union County, son of the late Sam D. and Ludie High Helms. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church Fellowship Sunday School Class, served in the U.S. Army during WW II, was a graduate of Indian Trail High School, was a member of West Gate Masonic Lodge #738, Scottish Rite Bodies, Oasis Temple of the Shrine, and retired as a driver with Lance Inc. after 43 years.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Jane Springs Helms; sons, Donald W. Helms and wife, Betsy of Conway, SC and Terry J. Helms and wife, Barri of Charlotte; grandchildren, David Helms of Myrtle Beach, SC, Beth Helms of Conway, SC, Jennifer Tucker of Charlotte, and Maggie Helms of Charlotte; and brother, Hoyle Helms of Monroe, NC. Mr. Helms was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, 6701 Pleasant Grove Road, Charlotte, NC 28216. Mr. Helms was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, and was a dear friend to many, many people who will miss him.

Mr. Edward Lee Hinson, 66, of Charlotte died Tuesday, March 28, 2001, at University Hospital.

Mize, Edwin S. `Poppa Doc`
Dr. Edwin S. `Poppa Doc` Mize, Jr., 68, of Charlotte, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 29, from the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service, 1111 East Boulevard, with the Reverend Earl Pennell and the Reverend J. Grady Faulk officiating. Entombment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Born October 18, 1932 in Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Mize was a son of the late Edwin S. Mize, Sr. and Susie Mae Mize. He attended Millsaps College and was a graduate of Old Mississippi State University. He served in both the U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Dr. Mize, a General Practitioner in Charlotte for 17 years, had also practiced in Black Mountain for 2 1/2 years.

Dr. Mize volunteered for numerous youth sport associations. He served as the team doctor for Olympic High School, Quail Hollow Junior High School, Harding High School as well as the Starclaire Athletic Association and was a volunteer and coach for the Starclaire Association girl's basketball team. He was also the personal physician for Boys Town of NC and for five years, was the medical doctor for the Charlotte Police.

A past president of the Central High School student body, Dr. Mize was also a volunteer with Hospice at Charlotte and a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. He was past president of the South Charlotte Optimist Club and the Black Mountain Optimist Club and served as coach and volunteer of South Mecklenburg Optimist.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Hoyle Hovis Mize; twelve children, Bobby Hovis and wife, Star of Leesburg, VA, Dianna H. Richardson and husband, Wayne, Gary M. Hovis and wife, Michele, Marsha H. Stephens and husband, Tim, of Gastonia, George E. Hovis and wife, Bobbi, W. Kurt Hovis and wife, Victoria, R. Kevin Hovis and wife, Diana, Edwin S. Mize, III and wife, Becky, of Hawaii, Christopher M. Mize and Timothy M. Mize and wife, Ann, all of Jackson, MS, Walter E. Mize and wife, Shelly, and Leslie K. Mize and wife, Dawn; 24 grandchildren, Scott Hovis and wife, Tracy of Clover, SC, Krystal Hovis, Beth Hovis, Bobby Hovis of Leesburg, VA, Bryce Harmon of Roanoke, VA, Debbie Richardson of Hillsville, VA, Tylina Coake of Austinville, VA, Dusty Richardson, Katrina Richardson, Gary Michael Hovis, Jr., Allie Hovis, Tashia Berry and husband, Randy, Tim Stephens, II, Blake Hovis, Trevor Hovis, Chaz Hovis, Jake Hovis, Ashe Burnette, William Mize of Hawaii, Sarah Mize and Hannah Mize, both of Jackson, MS, Kathryn Mize, Nolan Mize, and Justin Edwards; eight great-grandchildren, Scottie Hovis, Chayla Hovis, Jason Hovis, West Long, Kaitlynn Coake, Landon Coake, Austin Stephens, and Jalyn Burnett. Dr. Mize is also survived by a brother, Walter `Gerry` Mize; and two sisters, Mrs. Billy Polk and Mrs. Susie Orr, all of Jackson, MS; an aunt, Virginia Johnson of Madison, MS; an uncle, Rev. Robert Nay of Biloxi, MS; and numerous `adopted` neighborhood children.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Starclaire Athletic Association, P.O. Box 240254, Charlotte, NC 28224.
