Shapiro, Walter H.
Walter H. Shapiro, 75, died March 27, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital. A service to celebrate Walter's life will be held at Temple Israel, 4901 Providence Road, on Thursday, March 29, at 1:00 p.m. Born December 18, 1925 in Montreal, Canada, he was the son of Sheppard and Annie Shapiro, and grew up in Charlotte, N.C before serving in the U.S. Navy. Walter Shapiro was an entrepreneur who created many businesses throughout his career, and later devoted himself to community service and activism, fighting for humanitarian and civic causes on behalf of Charlotte's citizens. This eventually led Walter to establish the CharlotteChamber of Citizens, which to this day is the voice of neighborhoods and individuals who love the community as much as he did. He was a captivating public speaker and performer, who used his gifts of wit, charm and brilliant improvisation to win over even the most ardent opponents, all of whom respected him deeply. He was equally at home before a crowd of several hundred people, as before a group of small children. Walter was also a painter, sculptor, ceramic artist, and humorist. Above all, Walter was a loving father and husband who brought joy to his family and inspired them to dream. He will be deeply missed. Walter is survived by his wife Dicky; his three sons, Kimron, Ted and Blair; his brothers, Lawrence and Melvin, his daughters-in-law, Jane, Marika and Peipei; and his two grandchildren, Abigail and Eric.
