GASTONIA -- Mrs. Ruth Owen Portlock, 87, died Saturday, March 31, 2001. McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia, NC are serving the Portlock family.

Goodwin, Marvin
HAMLET -- Mr. Marvin Goodwin, 81, died March 28, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, West Ave. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Nelson funeral service is in charge of arrangements.

Terry, William C.
HAMLET -- William C. Terry, Jr., of 215 W. Hamlet Ave., Hamlet, NC, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Moore Regional Hospital. He was 85.

Born May 5, 1915 in Richmond County, he was the son of Dr. William Calvin Terry, Sr and Minnie Bowman Terry. He was an agriculturist.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hamlet, he was a past Farm Bureau President and a member of the Beekeepers Association. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University and was a master gardener with the Richmond County Extension Service.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001 at First United Methodist Church with visitation following interment at Mary Love Cemetery in the Fellowship Hall at United Methodist Church in Hamlet, Sunday, April 1, 2001.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the Boy Scouts of America c/o Central North Carolina Council, PO Box 250, Albemarle, NC 28002.

He was preceded in death by Lucille R. Terry. He is survived by his daughter, Betty Terry Thompson of Hamlet, NC; sons, Charles W. Terry of Hamlet, NC, and Calvin B. Terry of Vass, NC; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Harrington Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robinson, Willie J.
HICKORY -- Mr. Willie J. Robinson, 63, died Marcy 30, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Baptist Church, Connelly Springs, NC. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Heritage funeral service, Valdese, NC.

Stewart, Katherine Juanita `Kat'
KINGS MOUNTAIN -- Katherine Juanita `Kat' Stewart, age 78, a resident of White Oak Manor, Kings Mountain, NC, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at White Oak Manor. She was a native of Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late John Coit Stuart and the late Loreda Mae Ramsey Stuart Wells, a retired textile employee and a member of Second Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, NC.

Survivors are brother, John W. Stuart of Tucson, AZ; sister, Doyce Martin, Kings Mountain, NC; aunt, Vera Ramsey Bedsole, Kings Mountain, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel, Monday, April 2, 2001 by the Rev. Eugene Land and Rev. Paul Sorrells, officiating.

Visitation will be 3-4 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home prior to the service.

Interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery of Kings Mountain NC.

Arrangements are in the care of Harris Funeral Home, Inc., Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

O'Neil, Mary Jo `Jody' Lay
LAKE WYLIE -- Mrs. Mary Jo `Jody' Lay O'Neil, 53, died Thursday, March 29, 2001. Funeral is 10;30 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill, SC. Interment will be in Grandview Memorial Park. The Rev. Randy Madsen will officiate. She was the daughter of Homer A. and Dorothy Hill Lay of Zephyrills, FL.

Mrs. O'Neil was a member of Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Lake Wylie, SC, a member of the Eastern Star, and a homemaker. In addition to her parents, Mrs. O'Neil is survived by her husband, Thomas 'Tom' C. O'Neil of the home; sons, Tom O'Neil and John O'Neil, both of the home, and Corey Studer of Swanton, OH; daughters, Annie O'Neil of the home and Tammy Studer of Swanton, OH; brothers, Homer Lay of Zephyrhills, FL, Larry Lay of Toledo, OH and Gary Lay of Crystal River, FL; sisters, Chris Ferrell and Darlene Finley, both of New Port Richey, FL and three grandchildren.

Family will receive friends Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill, SC from 3 until 7 p.m. and at other times at the home, 5878 Highway 49, Lake Wylie, SC.

Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, PO Box 5082, Lake Wylie, SC 29710.

Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Campbell, Marcene Hunter
LANCASTER -- Mrs. Marcene Hunter Campbell, 62, of 1956 Springdale Rd., Lancaster, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 in Piedmont Medical Center. Born, September 30, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Heyward F. and Myrtle Threatt Hunter. She was a homemaker and a member of New Life Freewill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Campbell is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Lee Johnson of Lancaster; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Darla Hinson of Lancaster; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Glenn and Barbara Hunter of Lancaster and Gerald and Nancy Hunter of Orange park, FL; 1 sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Don Cooper of Albany, GA; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon from New Life Freewill Baptist CHurch by the Rev. Mitch Ingram and Rev. David Anders. Interment will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 7:00 until 9:00 Sunday evening.

Memorials may be made to New Life Freewill Baptist Church, 1622 Springdale Rd., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Hinson, Charles Harris
LANCASTER -- Mr. Charles Harris Hinson, age 66, of 1220 Kent Drive, died Saturday morning, March 31, 2001 at his home. He was born September 1, 1934 in Lancaster County, the son of the late Mr. Ira Hinson and Mrs. Bertha Williams Hinson and was first married to the late Mrs. Nancy Gregory Hinson. Mr. Hinson was a Bowater retiree and a former Lancaster County Bailiff, a member of Second Baptist Church where he was a member of the Praise Bible Class and the Chancel Choir, and served our great country in the United States Army.

Mr. Hinson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Judy Sheane Hinson of the home, 3 sons, Mr. Joseph Hinson and his wife Sherry of Chester, Mr. Scott Munn and his wife Angie and Mr. Brad Munn both of Lancaster, 1 daughter, Ms. Amy Hinson Spagnola of Columbia, SC, 1 brother, Mr. Bobby Hinson of Lancaster, and 3 grandchildren.

Mr. Hinson was preceded in death by one daughter, Miss Julia Beth Hinson.

The Graveside funeral service for Mr. Hinson will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, April 1, 2001 at Lancaster Memorial Park by Dr. James Spencer burial will follow.

The Family of Mr. Hinson received friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday evening, March 31, 2001 at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC and suggested memorial contributions to Hospice Homecare of Lancaster, 800 W. Meeting Street, Lancaster, SC 29720 or Second Baptist Church Building Fund, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 is in charge of arrangements for Mr. Hinson.

Biesecker, James `Jim'
LEXINGTON -- James `Jim' Biesecker, Jr., 87, died March 31, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements by Piedmont Funeral Home.

Parker, A.C. `Buddy'
LINCOLNTON -- Mr. A.C. `Buddy' Parker, 70, died March 31, 2001. Funeral is 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 in the Warlick Funeral Home CHapel. Visitation is 7-8;30 p.m. Sunday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Smith, Albert Pearison (Kayo)
LINWOOD -- Mr. Albert Pearison (Kayo) Smith, 73, died March 30, 2001. Graveside service is 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 at Yadkin Baptist Church Cemetery Salisbury, NC. Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury is serving the Smith family.

Brown, Susan Carl Mace
MARION -- Mrs. Susan Carl Mace Brown, 36, went to be with Jesus March 30, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at Hicks Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

Riddle, Marsha Duncan
MARION -- Marsha Duncan Riddle, 45, died Friday, March 30, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. following the visitation in Westmoreland Funeral Home from 2-3 p.m. Monday. Interment will be at McDowell Memorial Park. Westmoreland Funeral Home is in charge.

Wilson, Zadie Volena
MARION -- Miss Zadie Volena Wilson, 83, died March 30, 2001. Funeral is 4 p.m. Sunday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Marion. Visitation is 3-4 p.m. Sunday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Marion.

Cross, Mabel
MONROE -- Mrs. Mabel Cross, 81, died March 31, 2001, at her residence.

A most loving, giving, caring mother and friend. She was grateful for the kindness and care she received from Hospice.

Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, Carl; sons, Carl Cross, Jr. of Vero Beach, Florida and Tom Cross and wife Ruth of Monroe; daughters Gail Rollins and husband Phil and Eileen Cross of Monroe; fifteen grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110. Gordon funeral service is caring for the Cross family.

MORGANTON -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Lister Thomas, 70, died Friday, March 30, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Kirksey Memorial Chapel. Visitation is 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Robinson, Bobby
MORVEN -- Mr. Bobby Robinson, Jr., died Thursday, March 29, 2001. Arrangements are incomplete at Knotts & Wade Funeral Home.

Morris, Bessie Inez Huffstetler
MT. HOLLY -- Mrs. Bessie Inez Huffstetler Morris, 90, died March 31, 2001. Funeral is 1 p.m. Monday at Goshen Free Will Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Carothers Funeral Home.

Richardson, John F.
PAGELAND -- John F. Richardson, Jr., 82, died March 30, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Sunday at the graveside in Mt. Moriah Baptist Cemetery. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Sunday at Sutton Funeral Home.

He was the son of Jonny F. & Ella Phillips Richardson. He was retired from the US Army.

He is survived by his brothers, Lindy (wife-Thayer) Richardson of Charlotte, and Jack (wife - Joy) Richardson, Mullins, SC; nieces & nephews, Cathy Leaird, Susan Tadlock and Mary Joy Cannon Murry Richardson, David Richardson and Steven Richardson. He was preceded in death by one sister, Eloise R. Mangum.

Sutton Funeral Home of Pageland is serving the family of Mr. Richardson.

Carpenter, Wallace Reid
RUTHERFORDTON -- Wallace Reid Carpenter, Jr., 47, died Friday, March 30, 2001. Funeral is 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at First Baptist Church, Rutherfordton, NC. Visitation is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Crowe's Mortuary, Rutherfordton.

Hast, C.E. `Gene'
SALISBURY -- C.E. `Gene' Hast, 71, died Saturday, March 31, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Summersett Memorial Chapel. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Monday at Summersett Funeral Home. Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Hamrick, Robert Lee
SHELBY -- Mr. Robert Lee Hamrick, 65, died Thursday, March 15, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Sunday at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel. Burial will be in Faith Baptist Church Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Cleveland Funeral Services of Shelby.

Hall, Diane Perdue
WINSTON-SALEM -- Mrs. Diane Perdue Hall passed away Friday afternoon, March 30, 2001, after a long illness. Mrs. Hall was born in Chesterfield County, SC, September 10, 1946, the daughter of Elisha P. Perdue, Jr., and Cora Jane Cassidy Perdue. Surviving are her husband, Robert E. Hall of the home in Winston-Salem; one daughter, Dawn H. Von Cannon and husband, Roger; three granddaughters, Heather, Krystal and Sarah all of Colfax, NC; three brothers, Glenn Perdue of Columbia, SC, Donald Perdue and wife Judy of Walnut Grove, NC, and David Perdue of Patrick, SC; three sisters, Evelyn P. McMahan and husband, Robert, of Lexington, NC, Ida Mac P. Money and husband Earle, of Patrick, SC, and Judy P. Threatt and husband, Ray, of Patrick, SC; twelve nieces and nephews, twenty-two great nieces and nephews; one great great nephew; five aunts; and a brother-in-law, Edwin J. Hall and his wife, Doris. Also surviving are a host of friends and neighbors, and her co-workers at James R. Malton, accountants, where she was employed for many years. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Rd., Chapel Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Palmetto Baptist Church Cemetery near Chesterfield, SC conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Greene. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth, 1100 S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
