Green, Lillian DePass
SUMMERVILLE -- Lillian DePass Green, 90, widow of Frank Davis Green, died March 30, 2001. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her graveside services in Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill, SC, Monday, April 2, 2001 at twelve noon. Friends may call at Bass Funeral Home in Rock Hill Sunday evening between six and eight o'clock.

Mrs. Green was born December 5, 1910 in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late Hamilton Irvine DePass of Camden, SC and Ethel Marshall DePass of Wadesboro, NC. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Rock Hill. She attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Summerville. She was retired from York County Selective Service. Mrs. Green was a member of the Colonial Dames XVII Century.

Surviving are one daughter, Caroline G. Baarcke of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sisters, Nida D. Moseley of Raleigh, NC, and Ethel D. Croowell of Charlotte, NC and two grandchildren, Charles F. Baarcke, III and Caroline Marshall Baarcke.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 201 West Ninth North Street, Summerville, SC 29483; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 316 West Carolina Avenue, Summerville, SC 29483; or The Episcopal Church of Our Savior, 144 Caldwell Street, Rock HIll, SC 29730.

Pelone, Susan Northrop Hardin
STATESVILLE -- Mrs. Susan Northrop Hardin Pelone, 69, of 6101 Clark Creek Parkway, Charlotte and formerly of Fayetteville died Saturday morning at the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Born in Mecklenburg County on September 24, 1931, she was a daughter of the late William Harris Northrop and Velda Conwell Northrop. She worked at the Cumberland County Arena since it opened and retired in 1995 as Assistant Manager. She was active in and received a life membership in the Jaycettes and was active in the little theater in Fayetteville. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville.

Survivors include two sons, William Michael Pelone of Raleigh and Daniel Christopher Pelone of Charlotte, two daughters, Frances Riggs of Charlotte and Deborah Brown of Statesville, one brother, Harris Northrop of Wilmington and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Mrs. Ann Williams.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7th at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville with the Rev. Ray Brown officiating. A family celebration of life will be held later that day at Holden Beach. The family will greet friends at the church immediately following the service.

Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association Metrolina Region 5315 Greenbrook Dr. Charlotte, NC 28205. Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home 705 Davie Ave. Statesville, NC 28677 is entrusted with the arrangements.

Cooke, Clara Privette
STATESVILLE -- Clara Agnes (Privette) Cooke, 73, of Statesville, North Carolina, an employee with J.P. Stevens, Inc. before her retirement, died at Iredell Memorial Hospital on Saturday, March 31, 2001. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 1, 2001, 7-8:30 p.m., at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, 705 Davie Avenue, Statesville. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, April 2, 2 p.m., at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Robert Johnson. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 481 Turnersburg Road, Statesville. Arrangements entrusted to Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, Statesville, North Carolina.

Campbell, Clarence Jennings
STATESVILLE -- Mr. Clarence Jennings Campbell, age 76, died Saturday, March 31, 2001. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Troutman Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Campbell.

Bennett, Reba B.
STATESVILLE -- Reba B. Bennett, 62, died March 30, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Crestview Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Nicholson Funeral Home.

Lackey, Norris Dixon `Dick'
SHELBY -- Norris Dixon `Dick' Lackey, Jr., 68, died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was a retired attorney after 35 years, and founded Lackey & Lackey Attorneys at Law. He was the husband of the late Lou Hawley Lacket. He was the son of the late Norris Dixon Lackey, Sr. & late Louise Baley Lackey; 4 sons, Mark D. Lackey, Shelby; Miles M. Lackey, Washington, DC, Kevin S. Lackey and wife Penny Atlanta, GA, Seth N. Lackey and wife Jennifer, Shelby; sisters, Lea Lackey-Zachman and husband Timothy of Winston-Salem, NC; late Elizabeth `Betsy' Lackey Williams; 2 grandchildren, Davis Lackey & Harris Lackey; 2 nephews, Timothy Williams & Jonathan Williams.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was a 1954 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and a 1957 graduate of UNC CHapel HIll Law School. He served on the State Bar Counsel for many years. He was a 1st Lt. U.S. Army JAG Corps.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sunset Cemetery by Dr. Joseph Reeves will officiate. Visitation will be 5-6 p.m. Sunday at Cecil M. BUrton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to 500 E. Morehead St. Suite 211, Charlotte, NC 28202 or Cleveland Co. Memorial Library 104 Howie Dr. Shelby, NC 28150.

Mr. Robert M. (Bob) Carter, 87, of Charlotte, died, Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Mercy Hospital-South. Arrangements will be announced by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Pineville Chapel.

Cathey, William `Bill'
Mr. William `Bill' Cathey, of Springfield Garden, New York, formerly of Charlotte, North Carolina, departed this life on Friday, March 30, 2001 in New York.

funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at NEw Star Baptist Church in Springfield Garden, NY.

Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Marie Cathey of Springfield Garden, NY; five children, Evangelist Ever Brennan, William Cathey, Jr., Farris Cathey, James Cathey, and Anita Cathey, all of New York; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brothers, Albirtus, Price Cathey, and French Cathey, all of Charlotte, NC; Rev. Raymond Cathey of Philadelphia, PA; sisters, Mrs. Joanna Moss of Washington, DC; Mrs. Joyce Hudson and Mrs. Dorothy Kitchen, both of Charlotte.

Painter, Corinne Lewis
Mrs. Corinne Lewis Painter, 89, of Belmont, NC died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Wesley Care Center. The graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Greenwood Cemetery in Tarboro, NC. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel.

Corinne L. Painter was born December 27, 1911 in Tarboro, daughter of the late Percy Lewis and Laura Cobb Lewis. She is survived by her two sons, Charles and his wife, Barbara Painter of Belmont, NC, Stan and his wife, Lynda Painter of Easley, SC; three granddaughters; two great grandchildren; and a nephew, Earl Ritterpusch of Smithfield, NC.

Parrish, William
William Parrish, 84, of Charlotte, died Saturday, at Alterra Clare Bridge Southpark.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, November 20, 1916, Bill was the son of the late Walter and Mary Gruszczynski. He was employed as a typewriter mechanic for Royal Typewriter for 30 yrs. Mr. Parrish had also worked as a self employed typewriter mechanic, as well as a charter boat captain on Lake Erie, and was fond of making fishing lores. He was a US Air Force Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his son, Mike and wife Chris; grandchildren, David, Marcus, Jacob, and Elizabeth all of Waxhaw; brothers, Steve and Walter Gruszczynski; sisters, Pat Bracy and Irene Stanton all of Toledo, OH.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Matthew Catholic Church at at later date.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc., Souther Piedmont Chapter 3420 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215.

Spoon, LeRoy Page
LeRoy Page Spoon, Jr., 76, of Charlotte, died April 1, 2001 at Carrington Place. Born October 19, 1924 in Athens, Georgia, son of the late LeRoy Page Spoon, Sr. and Kathryn Warren Spoon. He attended Central High in Charlotte, and later graduated from high school in Charleston, SC. He attended both Clemson University and the University of Georgia.

He actively served as a member of the Army Infantry in the European Theater during WWII, and the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean Conflict. He retired as an officer in the Army National Guard after 25 years service.

Mr. Spoon was owner and president of L.F. Spoon & Co. Inc., and switching equipment manufacturing.

Since 1965 Mr. Spoone was an active member of Sardis Presbyterian Church, serving as a choir member, elder, and Sunday School Teacher.

He was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1972, serving until 1985. While in Raleigh, among other duties, he served as House Minority Leader.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Awell Spoon; daughter Tina Spoon Fincher, and husband Tim of Matthews, son Page Spoon and his wife Beth of Charlotte, Wilfred Spoon and wife Anne of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Tad, Silas, and Sam Fincher; and Jordan and Abbey Spoon. Also survived by a sister Nettie Kimble and husband Joe, and Uncle Willfred Warren and his wife Mary Jane.

A service of worship honoring Mr. Spoon's memory will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Sardis Presbyterian Church, the Rev. J. Thomas Kort officiating. Interment will be private. The Spoon family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Education Hall.

Starnes, James Leon
James Leon Starnes, 76, of Charlotte, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral is 12:00 noon Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with Pastor Steven Pipho officiating. Interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Starnes was born November 30, 1924 in Charlotte, a son of the late William Starnes and Celestus Hedrick Starnes. He retired from H & S Lumber Company as Warehouse Manager after more than 30 years of service. Mr. Starnes served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Areas Aboard the U.S.S. Florence Nightingale and the U.S.S. Tortuga. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and American Legion Post #262.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Erika Starnes, children, Carol Bewersdorf, of Ladson, SC. Richard Starnes and wife Sherry Starnes, of Pensacola, FL, Wayne Starnes, of Tampa, FL, and Karen Benner and husband, Robert Benner, of Asheville, NC, grandchildren, Susan Starnes Whitfield and husband Michael Whitfield, Sonya Starnes Carter, Delia Starnes, John Bewersdorf and wife Cathey, Natascha Bewersdorf Jones and husband, Mark Jones, Amy Benner and Kristy Benner, sister, Lois Nash, of Charlotte, and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, JORG Bewersdorf, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Redeemer Lutheran Church, PO Box 669667, Charlotte, NC 28266.

Randolph, Hope Williams
ALBEMARLE -- Mrs. Hope Williams Randolph, 94, died Sunday, April 1, 2001. Memorial service is 11 .m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Christ Episcopal Church, Albemarle, NC. Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA. The Rev. Allan Belton will officiate. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m.-11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Christ Episcopal Church Parish Hall. Born on October 25, 1906 in San Francisco County, CA, she was the daughter of the late William A. Williams and Winefred Wright Williams. She was married to the late Ridgely Bennett Randolph. She was a retired teacher and secretary. She has lived in Washington DC, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, California, and now North Carolina. In her more active years she died a lot of volunteer work, and was very involved with her grandchildren. She's a member of Christ Church of Albemarle and Episcopal Church of Almaden, CA. She graduated from Stanford University in 1929 with a BA of English. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

She is survived by two sons, Wright Randolph of Clover, SC and Richard Randolph of Cupertino, CA; daughters, Myra Saylor of Yuma, AZ and Nella Henniger San Jose, CA; step-son, William Franklin Randolph of Houston, TX; step-daughter, Betsy Randolph Woodard of Houston, TX; brother, Richard Williams of Calabasas, CA; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services to be held Clover, SC and San Jose, CA at a later date.

Henkle, Bertha Dellinger
BELMONT -- Mrs. Bertha Dellinger Henkle, 81, died March 31, 2001 at Altera Sterling House in Rock HIll, SC. Mrs. Henkle was a native of Gaston Co. the daughter of the late John E. and Lula Hager Dellinger and the wife of the late John Lamar Henkle. She was retired after many years working as a Registered Nurse and was a lifetime member of The Girls Scouts (45 years) and a member of the Pioneer Girl Scout Council and a member of First Untied Methodist Church, Belmont.

Mrs. Henkle is survived by her daughter, Ann H. Kitts, Rock HIll, SC and her son, John L. Henkle, Jr. Mt. Holly, brother, Jimmy Dellinger, Huntersville, and Beatrice Gordan, Charlotte, NC.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Henkle will be held on Tuesday evening, April 3, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Belmont officiated by the Rev. Bob Little. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall.

McKay, James Benjamin
CHESTER -- Mr. James Benjamin McKay, Sr., 87, widower of Johnnie Mae (Hopper) McKay, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Chester County Hospital. Funeral is 5 p.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Chapel Interment will be in Chester Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Donald Scoggins will officiate.

Born January 1, 1914 in Johnson City, TN, he was the son of the late Robert Henry McKay and Jo Ana (Sherrill) McKay. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Company. He attended school in Johnson City, TN and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.

Survivors are one son, James B. `Benny' McKay, Jr. of Chester, SC; one sister-in-law, Anna G. McKay of Chester.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, 710 Meadowbrook Road, Chester, SC 29706.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Barron Funeral Home.

Roberts, Lonnie
CHESTER -- Mr. Lonnie Roberts, Sr., 71, formerly of Elizabeth Street, Chester, died Saturday, March 31 at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Chapel. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Monday at Barron Funeral Home.

Born May 28, 1929 in Chester, SC, he was the son of the late John Henry Roberts and Minnie (Love) Roberts. He was a retired truck driver. He attended schools of Chester County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force in the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his 2 sons, Lonnie W. Roberts, Jr. of Chester, SC, and Dale Roberts of Chester, SC; 3 granddaughters, Dixie Roberts of Chester, SC, Lauren Chitwood of Chester, SC, and Zoie Roberts of Chester, SC; 2 grandsons, Chris Roberts of Chester, SC, Dale Roberts, Jr. of Chester, SC; 2 grandsons, Chris Roberts of Chester, SC and Dale Roberts, Jr. of Chester, SC;1 great granddaughter, Cierra Roberts of Chester, SC; 2 sisters, Vangie Mitchell of Frederick, Maryland, Rebecca Cooper of Rock Hill, SC; several nieces and nephews; two very special friends, Dorothy Friscia, Linda Friscia.
