Huggins, Carolyn Weaver
DALLAS -- Mrs. Carolyn Weaver Huggins, age 56, of 4739 Dallas-High Shoals Rd., Dallas, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

She was a Gaston County native and a homemaker. She was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Dallas.

She was preceded in death by: her parents-Clarence and Oleen Pritchett Weaver. She is survived by her husband, Charles H. Huggins, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Deanna Huggins of Gastonia; aunts, Francis Matthews of Gainesville, GA; Flo Cotton of McDonough, GA; Virginia Allen of Gainesville, GA; Louise Jones of Gastonia, NC; Sue Jones of Lincolnton, NC; sisters, Judy Cochcroft of Dallas, NC; Janet Falls of Gastonia, NC; grandchild, Justin Huggins of Bessemer City, NC.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 at Greene funeral service Southside Chapel.

Memorial service will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Dallas. The Rev. Fred High and the Rev. Charles Jenkins will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Association 1628 E. Morehead St. Suite 200 Charlotte, NC 28207.

Key, Myrtle Ree Lail
DALLAS -- Myrtle Ree Lail Key, 79, of 3614 Dallas-High Shoals Road died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at her residence.

A native of Gaston County, she was the widow of the late Pleny Key and daughter of the Lawson Lee and Fronia Catherine Cook. She was a retired textile employee and member of a local church. She was preceded in death by a sister Lottie Ramsey.

Surviving are one son, Tomy Key of the home, three nephews, two nieces, ten great nephews and five great nieces.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. in The Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia with the Rev. Robert Norris officiating. Interment will follow at Long Creek Memorial Cemetery in Dallas.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday prior to the service at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia.

Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia is serving the Key family.

Gilbert, Lois Colleen
DENVER -- Mrs. Lois Colleen Gilbert, age 71, of 4109 Lakeshore Rd., Denver, NC, died Friday, March 30, 2001.

Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan Heermans officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gilbert, a homemaker, was born April 22, 1929 in Gaston County. She was the daughter of the late Russell and Nettie Wilson Champion. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her husband, Claude 'Pete' Gilbert; one son, Jerry Gilbert of Homestead, FL; 2 daughters, Claudia Weiterman of Homestead, Fl, and Donna Keever, of Denver, NC, and one sister, Doricia Davis, and brother-in-law, Joe Davis, of Gastonia, NC, and 6 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 North Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Rick, Larry Eugene
DENVER -- Larry Eugene Rick, age 59, of 2801 St. James Church Road, Denver, NC, died March 31, 2001. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edna Riggs officiating.

Mr. Rick was born May 4, 1941 in Gaston County, son of the late Sam Rick and Pauline Thornton Rick. He was employed at HIghland Mills of Charlotte for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Christine; one son, Michael E. Rick of Belmont, NC; one daughter, Genia Hill of Lincolnton, NC; 3 step-children, Melissa Howell of Huntersville, NC, Teresa May Nienke of Charlotte, NC, and Robert W. Wyatt of Denver, NC; 2 brothers; Charles Rick of Charlotte, NC, and Clarence Rick of Mt. Holly, NC; 2 sisters, Lena Mae Love and Leona Sherrill of Gastonia, NC; 3 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 North Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Warlick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Beaver, Jessie Leroy `Roy'
GASTONIA -- Mr. Jessie Leroy `Roy' Beaver, 68, of 3016 Forbes Rd. died Friday, March 30, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Beaver was a native of Cherokee County, NC, son of the Late James Burton and Lela Rowland Beaver, brother of the late Pauline B. Lovelace. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, retired Airforce master Sargent, serving as an electronics Instructor, a Korean War veteran serving as a paratrooper in the 101 Airborne, 187 Regiment in the U.S. Army and after his retirement from the armed forces he was a technician with White Business Machine Co.

Survivors include his wife: Rebecca Hill Beaver of the home; son and daughter-in-law, James and Jona Beaver of Charlotte; daughter and son-in-law, Donna B. and Richard Lay of Dallas; sisters: Helen Beaver Sosebee of Bessemer City, Dorothy Stewart of Gastonia; grandchildren, Erica Beaver of Kings Mtn., Nicholos and Patrick Lay of Dallas; step-grandchildren, Kimberley Helms of Gastonia, Patrick Helms of Heath Springs; step-great grandchildren: Bailey Helms of Gastonia.

A 7 p.m. memorial service will be held Monday, April 2, 2001 at McLean Funeral Directors Founders Chapel. The Rev. Mike Criswell officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be private.

Bolynn, Rosa Rowe
GASTONIA -- Rosa Rowe Bolynn, 87, died Saturday, March 31, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at Greene funeral service Westside Chapel. The Rev. Scott Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia. Visitation was Sunday and other time at the home, 4205 Lynn Ave.

Pallbearers will be Paul Bolynn, Shane Bolynn, Shannon Bolynn, Keith Glaze, Scott Oliver, Dean Spencer, Johnny Spencer, and Jerry Spencer.

She was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, PO Box 3984 Gastonia, NC 28054.

She was preceded in death by: her husband-Herman Bolynn; her father, Ollie Rowe; her mother, Laura Matthews Rowe Frye; son, Harvey Bolynn; granddaughters, Sandra & Angie Bolynn; great grandson, Michael Ballew; sisters, Myrtle Carter & Lyla Tanner.

She is survived by sons & daughters-in-law, David & Martha Bolynn of Gastonia; L.D. & Joann of Lincolnton; Donnie Bolynn of Gastonia; daughters & sons-in-law, Louise Spencer of Gastonia; Liller Glaze of Gastonia; Linda Bolynn of McAdenville; Jeanette & Don Oliver of Gastonia; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Cox, William B. `Bill'
GASTONIA -- Mr. William B. `Bill' Cox, 76, died March 31, 2001. He was the son of the late William R. and Frances Barber Cox. He was retired from Crompton & Knowles Co., Lowell, NC. He was a veteran of the US Army in WWII. He was a charter member of Myers Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He served in the US Army Infantry in WWII in Italy where he received the Bronze Star for Valor.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Juanita Cothran Cox; sons, Walter & Janet Cox, Beaufort, SC, William David & Janette Cox, Mt. Holly, NC, and Robert Stephen Cox of Gastonia; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Cox Hunter and brother, A.B. Cox.

Funeral is 2 p.m. April 2, 2001 at Myers Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation was Sunday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home.

Goodman, Minnie Lee Wallace Bullard
GASTONIA -- Mrs. Minnie Lee Wallace Bullard Goodman, 100, of 9165 Marietta Street, Gastonia, died on March 31, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Marion, NC on April 13, 1900, she was the daughter of William G. and Maggie Wallace. She was a homemaker and also was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husband, Ambrose Bullard and Ed Goodman. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Goodman is survived by several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A graveside service for Mrs. Goodman will be held at Gaston Memorial Park on Monday, April 2, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Bruce Pittman officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. at Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia.

Lovett, James Albert
GASTONIA -- Mr. James Albert Lovett, age 77, of 1770 Oak Hollow Rd., Gastonia, NC 28052, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of York County, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Wesley and Annie Kerns Lovett, his wife, Geneva Brooks Lovett, a son Calvin Woodrow Swayney, Sr., and his sisters, Leatha Burkett, Helen Crotts, Lillian Duncan.

He is survived by a stepson Richard Swayney, Cramerton, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren.

Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 at Greene funeral service Southside Chapel. Funeral is 3 p.m. Tuesday at Greene funeral service Southside Chapel. The Rev. Marshall Ramsey will officiate. Interment will be in Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia. Pallbearers will be Calvin W. Swayney, Jr., Troy Swayney, David Swayney, Conward Cloninger, Steve Panton, Howard Pasour.

Portlock, Ruth Owen
GASTONIA -- Mrs. Ruth Owen Portlock, 87, of 1750 Robinwood Road Gastonia, NC, formerly of Charlotte, NC died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at her residence.

She was a native of Fall River Mass., located in Bristol County Mass. She was a life member and chaplain of the Loyal Unity Lodge #9667, I O.O.F.M.U. She attended St. James Episcopal Church, St. Marks Episcopal Church and was a member of Church of Our Savior all in Fall River, Mass. She taught Sunday School at St. James Episcopal Church in Fall River, Mass. She was a retired supervisor from Shelburne Shirt Company in Fall River, Mass. She was active with the Davol School PTA in Fall River, Mass.

Mrs. Portlock was preceded in death by her parents, Edward H. Owen and Eva Twisse Owen, husband, William B. Portlock.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John B. and Donna D. Portlock of Belmont, NC, David E. and Edda Q. Portlock of Cincinnati, Ohio, grandchildren, Beth A. Portlock Barnes of Charlotte, NC, Nancy A. Portlock of New York City, Diana Portlock of Cincinnati, Ohio, great-grandchildren, Ashlyn C. Hannink, Tyler J. Barnes and Cameron R. Barnes all of Charlotte, NC.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia, NC with Reverend Houston J. Matthews officiating. The Portlock family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday, Paril 3, 2001 at McLean Funeral Directors prior to the service.

Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Fall River, Mass. Thursday, April 5, 2001.

Jones, Malcolm P.
GREAT FALLS -- Mr. Malcolm P. Jones, 79, husband of Ossie (Sisk) Jones, died Friday, March 30, 2001.

Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home. Interment will be 5 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery, Shelby. The Rev. Larry Roberts and Rev. John Mullis will officiate. He was born April 28, 1921 in Gaffney, SC, the son of the late, Victor Jones and Belle (Blanton) Jones. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Company. He was a member of Great Falls First Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Ossie Sisk Jones; daughter and son-in-law, Van and Wayne Crocker of Shelby, NC; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Evelyn Walker of Cherryville, NC, Marie Stanley of Shelby, NC; 1 brother, Robert `Bobby' Jones of Smyrner, SC. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue Burns.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association of SC, PO Box 23128, Columbia, SC 29224.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.
