RUTHERFORDTON -- Mrs. Sue Hill Koon, 75, died Sunday, April 1, 2001. She was a native of Rutherford County, NC and the daughter of the late G. Fred Hill and Minnie Higgins Hill. She was a member of Green Hill Baptist Church. She attended Berea College and retired from Stonecutter Mills as assistant treasurer and assistant secretary and manager of the bookeeping department.

Survivors are husband, James F. `Bill' Koon of Rutherfordton, NC; son, James Patrick Koon of Lebana, TN, Larry Stephen Koon of Roanoke, VA, Martin Daniel Koon, Wilkesboro, NC; brother, James Hill of Rutherfordton, NC, Martin Hill of Hendersonville, NC, J. Reid Hill of Rutherfordton, NC, Charles Hill, Rutherfordton, NC, Yates Hill, of Rutherfordton, NC, and Donald Hill of Rutherfordton, NC; and sister, Beatrice Biddix of Forest City, NC; 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Piedmont Baptist Church. Burial will be in Piedmont Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday at McMahan's Funeral Home.

Brandon, Thomas Craig
STANLEY -- Thomas Craig Brandon, Sr., 91, of 514 Old Mt. Holy Road, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia.

Pressley, Bonnie Honeycutt
STANLEY -- Bonnie Honeycutt Pressley, 66, died April 1, 2001. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2001 at Sandy Ford Free Will Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Carothers Funeral Home.

Campbell, Clarence Jennings
STATESVILLE -- Mr. Clarence Jennings Campbell, age 76, of Orlando, Florida, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2001.

A native of Iredell County, Mr. Campbell was a retired textile chemist. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain where he taught Sunday School. He served our country in the U.S. Army during the early 1940's.

He was preceded in death by parents, Charles Fletcher Campbell and Troy Lounette Bell, wife, Matoka Morrison Campbell, brother, Charles Fletcher Campbell, two sisters, Helen C. Turner and Agnes F. Cambell.

He is survived by a son, Ross Ervin Campbell of King Mountain, two daughters, Jane Campbell Kise and husband, Bryan of Shelby, Jennifer Campbell Drohan and husband, Michael of Orlando, Florida; a brother, John W. Campbell of Waynesboro, Virginia; three sisters, Addie Lois C. Burgess and Bobbie C. Horney of Greensboro, Olga Yvonne Hoskins of Reidsville, NC; four grandchildren, Brittany Jean Campbell, William Jennings Drohan, Alex Michael Drohan and Maria Jane Kiser.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 2, 2001 at Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain with the Rev. Harrison L. Hinson officiating. The family will receive friends at Troutman Funeral Home from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2001.

The graveside service will be Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Rd., Shelby, NC 28150.

Troutman Funeral Home is serving the family with local arrangements.

Grant, Stephen (Steve) Maxwell
STATESVILLE -- Stephen (Steve) Maxwell Grant, 61, died March 30, 2001. Memorial service is 4 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will follow service at the church. Nicholson Funeral Home is in charge.

WADESBORO -- Mrs. Daisy Mae Gaddy, 67, died March 31, 2001. Arrangements are incomplete at Smith Funeral Home of Wadesboro.

Davidson, June Steele
YORK -- June Steele Davidson, age 68, died March 31, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. Mrs. Davidson was the widow of Mr. Dean Davidson. She was preceded in death by a son Luke Davidson. Survivors are one daughter & son-in-law, Sherrie D. and Steven Williams, York, SC; daughter-in-law, Melissa Davidson-Ford, York, SC; four grandchildren, Odyssey Davidson, Heath Davidson, Logan Williams, Haley Williams all of York, SC; one great grandchild, Dalyn Garrett, York, SC.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Sam McGregor. The family will receive friends at the home, 6145 Campbell Rd., York, SC.

Memorials may be made to Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, 5780 Allison Creek Rd., York, SC 29745.

Gunter, Billy R.
YORK -- Mr. Billy R. Gunter, 49, 1838 Apple Blossom Dr., died March 31, 2001. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia.

Gunter, Billy Ray
YORK -- Billy Ray Gunter, 59, of 1838 Apple Blossom Road, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC.

A native of Guilford County, he was the son of Jessie James and Effie Lanning Gunter. He was a retired supervisor from Pharr Yarns after 25 years of service. Mr. Gunter was preceded in death by a daughter Myra Seagle.

Surviving are his wife Geraldine Messer Gunter, three daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Charles Ledford, Tammy and Donald Dominy all of Clover, Pamela and Tim Steir of Charlotte, three sons and daughters-in-law Craig and Denise Jenkins of Dallas, Johnny and Deborah Gunter of Greensboro, Billy and Lynn Gillman, two sisters Carol Whitaker of Wrightsville Beach, and Loretta Gunter of Carolina Beach, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia with Dr. Conley Matlock officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York. Pallbearers will be Keith Ledford, Lebo Ledford, Ricky Breedlove, Robert Gibson, Phillip Gibson and Jeremy Jenkins.

At other times the family will be at the residence.

Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia is serving the Gunter family.

Brown, Woodrow
Woodrow Brown, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at Stewart Health Center. His funeral will be on Wednesday, April 4, at 10 Am at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7-8:30 PM at Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel.

Mr. Brown was born October 12, 1918 in Pageland, S.C., to the late Etta and Therrell Lee Brown. At 14, he moved to Charlotte, and worked in a grocery store. After a brief career as a salesman of Kayro Syrup, Mr. Brown began a small chain of independent grocery stores, including Piedmont Supermarket, and Tradewinds Supermarket in Charlotte. He was also a self-employed building contractor.

In 1940, he joined First Baptist Church, where he became a lifetime deacon and served as a Sunday School teacher.

Woodrow Brown's Christian faith, generosity, and love of life have been an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Meredith Brown; daughters and sons-in-law, Sue B. and Harry Poole of Fountain Inn, S.C., and Deborah and Andrew Harper of Charlotte; daughter Janice Horton of North Wilkesboro; son and daughter-in-law, Garrett and Amy Hogan of Indian Trail; daughter-in-law Peggy Brown of Raleigh; grandchildren Kim Hartness and husband Blanton, of Oxford, NC; Jeff Poole of Orangeburg, S.C.; Ben Rickman of Monroe; Laurie, Elizabeth, Stephen, and Jonathan Horton of North Wilkesboro; and Connor and Eric Hogan of Indian Trail and great-grandchildren Hunter Hartness and Tyler Rickman; sister Hallie Pless of Las Vegas; brother Bill Brown and wife Ellen of Charlotte; sisters-in-law Edna Adams and Jane Sutton of Charlotte; and Mary Black of Spartanburg; and brother-in-law Alwin Eppley, also of Charlotte. He is predeceased by his first wife Margaret Eppley Brown, son Bill Brown, granddaughter Melissa Brown and brothers, Robert, Harry, and W.A. Brown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church, 301 South Davidson Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard.

Gatewood, Ms. Pamela Kimrey
Ms. Pamela Kimrey Gatewood, 43, of China Grove and formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital from a recurrence of cancer after 8 1/2 years as a cancer survivor.

Ms. Gatewood was born February 24, 1958 in Mecklenburg County, NC and graduated in 1975 from Harding High School. For several years, Ms. Gatewood resided in Goldsboro where she was a member of the Baptist Church and worked first as an EMT and later for seven years at Cherry Hospital. She recently completed a degree in phlebotomy and was employed in a Charlotte hospital.

She is survived by her mother, Jerline Montgomery of Charlotte; sister C. Michelle Montgomery of Lake Wylie, SC; sons, Tim Gatewood and Michael Gatewood, both of Waxhaw, and Jamison Gatewood of China Grove; and her former husband, David Gatewood, of Waxhaw.

Her father, Raeford Kimrey, preceded her in death in 1964.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in the Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel with the Reverend Thomas L. Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 East Morehead Street, Suite 211, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard.

Thompson, J.W.
Mr. J.W. Thompson, 86, of Charlotte, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Lawyers Glen Retirement Center. Memorial services celebrating his life will be held at 11 AM Thursday, April 5, 2001 at St. John's Baptist Church where he was a member, with the Reverend Richard Kremer officiating. The follow members of his Sunday school class shall be his Honorary Pallbearers. His family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. Burial will be held preceding the memorial service at 10 AM Thursday, with the Reverend Joseph Mulligan assisting, at Forest Lawn East in Matthews.

Mr. Thompson was born October 8, 1914 in Dodge County, GA to the late Monroe and Ella Mae Thompson. J.W. attended Eastman, GA schools and received his law degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Law. He served his country in the US Army in the 68th Signal Battalion as Sergeant in the Philippines. He retired after 30 years of service as Claims Manager for North Carolina for the St. Paul Insurance Companies. J.W. was a member of American Legion Post 0009, was a past president of Casualty Insurance Managers Council, served on the Arbitration Council, taught Junior Boys Sunday School Class, served as church teller and as an associate deacon.

Mr. Thompson enjoyed gardening, nature photography, antiques, rock hounds, and adding elephants to his collection of over 175. He was a loving and devoted husband and father whose memories shall always be cherished.

His survivors include his wife of over 64 years, Virginia G. Thompson of Charlotte; his daughter, Maryanne Carnes and husband Jim of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Maria Carroll and husband Chris of Charlotte, Grant McNeely and wife Connie of Charlotte, Tanya Jackson and husband Harry of Myrtle Beach, Angelia Penton and husband Darren of Pensacola, FL; his sister, Ann WHite of Eastman, GA; and by six great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of Lawyers Glen for their kindness and care of J.W. during his stay there.

Memorials in memory of J.W. may be sent to either Presbyterian Hospice, 217 Travis Drive, P.O.B. 33549, Charlotte, NC 28223, or to Youth Mission Project, c/o St. John's Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Winkle, Bonnie K. Rosser Van
Bonnie K. Rosser Van Winkle, 59, of Charlotte, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 in the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital after a two year battle with cancer. She was born September 29, 1941 in Boulder, Colorado to the late Arthur William and Odetta M. Dagget Rosser.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 4, at South Park Christian Church, 6650 South Park Road, with Dr. Jerry Whitt officiating.

Mrs. Van Winkle enjoyed her family first, especially the life sent with her husband and the travels they shared. She will also be remembered for the quality time spent with her children and grandchildren. A bridge player and golfer, Bonnie was a member of Raintree Country Club as well as a member of South Park Christian Church and Charlotte New Comers and Garden Club.

Mrs. Van Winkle is survived by her husband of 38 years, James Van Winkle; daughter Lisa L. Fritschel; son James A. Van Winkle and wife Dawn; grandsons Ryan and Skyler Van Winkle, and Thomas and Nicholas Fritschel; and sister Betty Warren.

Bonnie will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and was well loved by all.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 East Morehead Street, Suite 211, Charlotte, NC 28202, or Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte 28204.

Carolina Funeral & Cremation is entrusted with arrangements.

Goodnight, Henry Lamont
CHINA GROVE -- Henry Lamont Goodnight died March 31, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Pauls United Church of Christ, Enochville. Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home is in charge.

Hughes, Lucile Gaston
FOREST CITY -- Mrs. Lucile Gaston Hughes, 94, formerly of Arlington St., died April 1, 2001, at White Oak Manor Nursing Center, where she was a resident.

Funeral is 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Hughes was born Dec. 29, 1906 in Reidville, SC and was a daughter of the late A.C. and Georgia Anna Gaston. She was the widow of the late Johnnie Hughes and was the retired co-owner of Hughes Jewelry, Inc. in Forest City. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was formerly active in her Sunday School Class and the Ladies Circle.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret H. Gibson and her husband, Jimmy of Forest City; granddaughters, Lu Juan G. Michalove of Fairbanks, AK and Debra G. Haney of Boone; and a great-grandson, Alexander Haney.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, 211 West Main St., Forest City, NC 28043.

The Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge.
