Goodman, Roger Dale `Red`
LINCOLNTON -- Mr. Roger Dale `Red` Goodman, 56, of 182 Coopertown Road, died April 3, 2001.

A graveside service will be held at 2 pm Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Reverend Carl Fosdick officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm Thursday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Goodman was born on December 31, 1944 in Lincoln County. He was preceded in death by his father, Vernie Goodman, and also by his wife, Diane P. Goodman. Mr. Goodman was retired from the construction industry.

Mr. Goodman is survived by four sons, Todd Goodman and Matt Goodman of Bessemer City, Chris Goodman of Cherryville, and Rodney Goodman of Lincolnton; one daughter, Mindy Goodman of Bessemer City; two grandchildren, Alicia and Felicia Goodman; two brothers, Tommy Goodman of Bessemer City, and Jimmy Goodman of Lincolnton; three sisters, Gloria Dean Huber of Baltimore, MD, and Yvonne Canipe and Connie Silva of Lincolnton; and his mother, Virginia Campbell Goodman of Lincolnton.

Memorials may be sent to the family at 182 Coopertown Road in Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Warlick Funeral Home of Lincolnton is in charge of arrangements.

Helms, Everean Eugene
LOCUST -- Everean Eugene Helms, 43, of 308 Maple Street, died April 3, 2001 at his home.

Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Community Baptist Church, with Rev. Tim Kimbell, Rev. Richard Collins and Rev. Joe Lee Kiker. Interment is in the church cemetery.

Born November 1, 1957 in Union County, NC, Mr. Helms was the son of Hoyle W. Helms and Eula Helms Helms of Locust. A member of Community Baptist Church, he was a machine operator with Willard Industries, Charlotte, NC.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Danita H. Beatty and husband, Kirk Beatty of Mt. Ulla, NC; nephew, Grant Beatty; and niece, Mikayla Beatty.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly County, 960 North First Street, Albemarle, NC 28991.

Queen, Bonnie Flynn
LOWELL -- Bonnie Flynn Queen, 73, of 306 McAdenville Rd. died April 2, 2001.

Graveside service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Long Creek Cemetery, Dallas with Rev. Dickie Spargo officiating.

Pallbearers will be in Ed Andrews, Bruce Flynn, Greg Flynn, Larry Hembre and Chris Howell. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Howell and Ralph Mulkey.

Mrs. Queen was born in Gaston County. She was a member of Flint Groves Baptist Church and former manager of Pueblo Motel in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Vicki Queen of Gastonia, and Steve and Linda Queen of Stanley; daughter and son-in-law, Dennis and Patricia Howell of Gastonia; brother, Bill Flynn of Gastonia; grandchildren, Stephanie Queen Denton, Brooke Queen, Leslie Stroupe Myers, Jason Marlowe; great-grandchildren, Seth and Sara Denton.

Greene funeral service, Southside Chapel is in charge.

Nixon, Bobby Lafayette
LOWESVILLE -- Bobby Lafayette Nixon, 69, of Lowesville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 3, 2001. Born November 2, 1931 in Lincoln County, he was son of the late Eston `Jay` Nixon and Ellen Black Nixon. Bob was a loving husband to his wife of 42 years, Shirley Faulkner Nixon, a loving father to his daughters, Melanie Nixon Holloway and husband, Tim, Melissa `Missy` Nixon Michael and her husband, Steve, and loving grandfather to his granddaughter, Amber `Brooke` Michael. Bob was a Past Lt. Governor and President of East Lincoln Optimist Club, East Lincoln Fire Department, and Western N.C. Conference of UMC Volunteers in Mission programs, which provides relief when disaster strikes. He made mission trips to Puerto Rico, Antigua, Haiti, Mexico, Dade County Florida, and Falmouth, KY. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, graduate of Rock Springs High School Class of 1950, and after 40 years of service, he retired from Southern Bell (now, Bell South).

funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, April 6, 2001 at Salem United Methodist Church in Denver with Rev. Jan Heermans and Rev. Billy Stamey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Raymer Funeral Home.

Gaddy, Phil
MARSHVILLE -- Mr. Phil Gaddy, 85, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Union Regional Medical Center. He was born in Union County, son of the late Judge Walter and Mattie Griffin Gaddy and was retired as a registered pharmacist with a 59-year career. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Pierce Gaddy.

A memorial service for Mr. Gaddy will be 2pm Friday at Morgan & Son Chapel with visitation beginning one hour before the service. Burial will be at Marshville City Cemetery. Rev. Barry Byrd will officiate.

Mr. Gaddy is survived by son John Gaddy of Norwood; daughter Phyllis Helms of Marshville; and 2 grandchildren.

Benfield, George Calvin
MERCED, CA -- George Calvin Benfield, 79, died March 28, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Friday at Drum Funeral Home Chapel, Conover, NC. Visitation is 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Huffman, Mrs. Bessie Sue Ella Drum
MINT HILL -- Mrs. Bessie Sue Ella Drum Huffman, of 13518 Fouroaks Dr., formerly of Belmont, died April 4, 2001 at her residence. She was a native of Catawba County and daughter of the late John and Bell Pope Drum. She was preceded in death by her husband Eulan Whitney Huffman; a son, Charlie Glenn Huffman; nine sisters and four brothers.

She was a homemaker.

A graveside service will be conducted by the Reverend Bob Withers, 3 pm Friday at Hillcrest Gardens, Mt. Holly. The family will receive friends at Carothers Funeral Home in Mt. Holly from 2-3 pm Friday.

Mrs. Huffman is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Pauline and Robert Satterfield of Charlotte, Mary Barrett of Mint Hill, and Martha Montgomery of Charlotte; two sons and one daughter-in-law Arthur Ray and JoAnn Huffman of Indian Trail, and James Clarence Huffman of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Carothers Funeral Home in Mt. Holly is serving the family of Mrs. Huffman.

Scott, Ruby Hesford Plaskett
MONROE -- Mrs. Ruby Hesford Plaskett Scott, beloved wife and loving mother died at her home on April 4, 2001.

The daughter of William Coulthard Ditchburn Plaskett and Pearl Reid Plaskett, she was born in Barrow in Furness, England on October 13, 1928. At the age of two, she came to America to reside in St. Louis, Missouri. Ruby was a 1946 graduate of Fredericktown High School in Fredericktown, Missouri. After attending nursing school in St. Louis, she married Robert Leroy Scott in 1947. For 53 years, they celebrated life together with six children and thirteen grandchildren.

After marriage, the Scotts resided in Missouri until moving to North Carolina in 1961. Ruby was actively involved in the Monroe community. She organized a playschool for children in the 1970's in her home. She was a real estate agent for Cambridge Realty as well as establishing Scott Realty along with her husband. Music was her passion, and she passed along her talents to her children and grandchildren. Her love was performing in many Community Theater Musicals, as well as singing in the Charlotte Oratorios.

As a member of Central United Methodist Church, Ruby voluntarily managed the church kitchen for a number of years. She was the unofficial social chair of the choir as well as an active circle leader and member.

She is survived by her husband, Bob and children: Becky and Rich Hughes of Chester, SC, Bill and Darby Scott of Clinton, NC, Jon and Rikki Scott of Virginia City, MT, Bruce and Emily Scott of Monroe, NC, Jamie and Vicky Scott of Charlotte, NC and Brian and Kelly Scott of Rock Hill, SC, and grandchildren, Jay, Andy, and Katie Hughes; Sarah, Kathryn and Allison Scott; Anna, Daniel, Emmy and Holly Scott; Mark, Kevin and Amy Scott; and her sister, Jane Plaskett Riley of Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

A service of celebration will be held Friday at 4:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe. Visitation will be held in the church Fellowship Hall after the service until 6:00 PM.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Central United Methodist Church, Choir Fund, 801 S. Hayne St., Monroe, NC 28112.

Steffes, James (Jim) Anton
MONROE -- Mr. James (Jim) Anton Steffes, 60, died April 3, 2001 at Union Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services for Mr. Steffes will be conducted at 3 pm Friday at Davis Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by family members and friends. Interment will follow with Full Military Rites at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe.

Mr. Steffes was born in Traverse City, MI, on May 13, 1940, son of the late Otto James Steffes and the late Lois Lardie Steffes. He was a retired US Air Force Career Serviceman, and later worked as an Inside Sales Manager with Dunn Manufacturing Corporation in Monroe.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Isenhour Steffes of Monroe; six children, Kim S. Farnham of Washington, Tony Steffes of Arizona, Chris Price of Monroe, Bonnie Steffes of Arizona, Randy Steffes, and Niki Newell of Rock Hill, SC; two brothers, Joe Steffes and Tommy Steffes, both of Michigan; a sister, Dayle Steffes of Michigan; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm this evening at the Davis Funeral Home in Monroe, 1003 East Franklin Street.

MOORESBORO -- Mrs. Nellie Adkins Jolley, 93, died April 4, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at McKinney--Landreth Funeral Home.

Brittain, Fulton Raymond
MORGANTON -- Mr. Fulton Raymond Brittain, 76, died April 4, 2001. Graveside service is 1 pm Friday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is following the service. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Tyler, Elma Fayssoux Berry
MT. PLEASANT -- Mrs. Elma Fayssoux Berry Tyler, 87, died April 3, 2001. Graveside service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Drexel Memorial Park, Drexel, NC. Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton, NC is assisting the Tyler family.

Browning, Harley Ray
NEBO -- Mr. Harley Ray Browning, 74, died April 3, 2001. Funeral is 4 pm Friday, Sunrise Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is tonight, 7-8:30 pm, Sossoman Funeral Home.

Davis, Sharon Wall
NORWOOD -- Mrs. Sharon Wall Davis, 48, died April 2, 2001. Funeral is 4 p.m. Friday at Bennettsville AME Zion Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing is 2:30-3:30 at the church. Smith Funeral Home, Wadesboro is in charge.

Smart, Susie Pauline Ivie
POLKVILLE -- Susie Pauline Ivie Smart, 86, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001. Funeral 2pm Friday, Lutz-Austell Chapel; burial will be private. Visitation Thursday night, 6:30-8:30pm, Lutz-Austell Funeral Home, entrusted with arrangements.

Beer, Glen Elroy
RICHBURG -- Mr. Glen Elroy Beer, 84, of 2696 Mountain Gap Road, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC. Funeral services will be held at 3pm Friday, at Hebron Presbyterian Church with interment in the church cemetery. Dr. David Riddle will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8pm Thursday at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Mr. Beer was born March 28, 1917 in Adams County, Ind., son of the late Wilbert Beer and the late Della Zucher Beer, and husband of Idabelle Worthman Beer. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, a retired cattle farmer, a member of Hebron Presbyterian Church, a member of American Legion Post 34, a member of the VFW, and a member of the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Idabelle W. Beer, of the home; son and daughter-in-law Allen and Pat Beer of Richburg, SC; daughter, Mrs. Gary (Janie) Carlton of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Brian Beer, Martin Beer and Pamela McDonald; great-grandchild Ashley McDonald; brothers Dale Beer of Richburg and Gerald Beer of Decator, Ind.; and sisters Verna Feasel and Lucille Clem, both of Decator, Ind., Melvenia Hirschy of Monroe, Ind., and Vera Nolan of Serlona, Ohio.
