Nelson, Ruth Griffin
Ruth Griffin Nelson, 88, died April 5, 2001 in Aurora, Colorado.

Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at McEwen Charlotte Chapel. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Nelson was born August 28, 1912 in Union County, N.C. She retired from the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System Food Services, and was a member of Spencer Memorial Methodist Church. She was married to John Nelson, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by two children, John Alan Nelson and Victoria (Phil) Nelms, both of Parker, CO; brother Frank (Carol) Griffin of Fairhope, AL; granddaughter, Gina (Brian) Frank of Littleton, CO; grandson, John (Connie) Nelms of Highlands Ranch, CO; and great-grandchildren, Adam, Allison and Ren Frank.

Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Charlotte Chapel.

Samuels, Lidia G.
Mrs. Lidia G. Samuels, of Charlotte, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center after a long illness at home.

Born in the Dominican Republic, she had been a missionary for the Park Street Baptist Church in Boston, MA.

Surviving are her daughter, Phoebe Samuels-Morris and her family of Charlotte and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews of both the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Mrs. Samuel's funeral service will be 11 AM today, Saturday, April 7, at the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington and funeral service, 5301 Albemarle Road, officiated by the Reverend Pablo Fernando of Briar Creek Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until the service time this morning.

The Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service is serving Mrs. Samuel's family.

Tobin, Elizabeth Clarke
Mrs. Elizabeth Clarke Tobin, 90, of Charlotte, died Sunday, April 1, 2001. Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Evergreen City Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Hospital. Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Pineville Chapel.

Torres, Sandra Ismenia Venegas
Sandra Ismenia Venegas Torres, 36, of Charlotte died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital.

Born Oct. 28, 1964 in Santiago, Chile to Ismenia Diaz Venegas and the late Enrique A. Venegas, Sandra was educated at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Paramus, NJ, and Berkly Business School in West Paterson, NJ. She had been a Charlotte resident since 1988, and was employed as a patient accounts representative with Healthcare Resource Assoc. Mrs. Torres was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children, Tracey Alice Torres and Kevin William Torres; mother, Ismenia D. Venegas, all of Charlotte; and a brother, Enrique A. Venegas and wife, Lisa of Boca Raton, FL.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Torres Children Trust Fund, c/o Bank of America, 8514 University City Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28213.

Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.

McLawhorn, Walter Joseph
ALBEMARLE -- Mr. Walter Joseph McLawhorn, 77, died April 6, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle.

Paulding, Mary Louise Tidwell
CHESTER -- Mrs. Mary Louise Tidwell Paulding, 77, died Tues., April 3, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Sunday at Gethsemane Baptist Church. King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, SC is in charge.

Butler, Cindy Ann Cruse
CLAREMONT -- Cindy Ann Cruse Butler, 38, died Thursday, April 5, 2001. Funeral 11am Monday, St. Marks Lutheran Church; viewing 30 minutes prior to service. Visitation Sunday 7-8:30pm at the church. Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in charge.

Patterson, Florence `Florrie`
CLINTON -- Mrs. Florence `Florrie` Patterson, 79, formerly of 904 Calvert Ave., died Thursday, April 5, 2001 in the Laurence County Hospital.

She was born in Lansford, PA and was the daughter of the late John and Linda May Ingram Williams.

Mrs. Patterson was a graduate of the Protestant Episcopal School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA, was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, was a homemaker, and served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War II.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph F. Patterson, Sr., of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, John W. and Susan H. Patterson of Charlotte, and Ralph F. and Annette V. Patterson, Jr. of Laurens; one daughter and son-in-law, Janie P. and David Mangum of Lenoir, NC; twelve grandchildren, Krissa Gaston, Mollie Patterson, Andi Patterson, Fleming Patterson, III, Christy Patterson, Amanda Patterson, Caleb Sturgeon, Becca Sturgeon, Brooke Mangum, Kellie Mangum, Lindsay Mangum and Blakely Mangum.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 pm in the Broad Street United Methodist Church with entombment at Pinelawn Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 pm at the Gray Funeral Home of Clinton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church, 310 N. Broad St., Clinton, SC 29325.

Gray Funeral Home of Clinton is in charge of arrangements.

Patterson, Elmer P.
CLOVER -- Mr. Elmer P. Patterson, 75, of 1028 Mosteller Street, died April 6, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC.

Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Harry Bryant officiating. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Born September 9, 1925 in York County, SC, Mr. Patterson was the son of the late Marion P. and Laura Burton Patterson. A retired carpenter, he was a member of Bowling Green First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Houston Patterson, of the home.

Memorials may be made to Bowling Green First Baptist Church, PO Box 38, Bowling Green, SC 29703.

Pender, Emma Johnson
CONCORD -- Emma Johnson Pender, 80, of 7501 Ruben Linker Rd, died Friday, April 6, 2001 at Universal Health Care.

Funeral is 3 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel at Concord. Burial will be in Charlotte Memorial Gardens, Charlotte, NC. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Born in Mecklenburg County, NC on July 12, 1920, Mrs. Pender was the wife of the late Samuel Brice Pender, Sr. who preceded her in death on May 2, 1998. She was a seamstress at Fun-Tees and member of Landis Baptist Church.

Surviving are her children, Edna Pender of Charleston, SC, Samuel Brice Pender, Jr. of Concord, NC, and Betty Yates of Harrisburg, NC; brother, Bill Johnson of Charlotte, NC; sister, Louise Parrish of Concord, NC; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Coltrane Life Center, 321 Corban Ave., Concord, NC 28025.

The family will be at 7501 Ruben Linker Rd, Concord, NC 28027.

Barr, Alice Yarbrough
GASTONIA -- Alice Yarbrough Barr, 92, died April 6, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Sandy Ford Free Will Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Carothers Funeral Home in Mt. Holly.

Garcias, Salena Marie Thompson
GASTONIA -- Salena Marie Thompson Garcias, infant, died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia.

Harrison, Richard Lee
GASTONIA -- Mr. Richard Lee Harrison, 58, of 700 Hickory Hill Court died April 5, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Memorial service is 4 p.m. Saturday at Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia with Rev. Larry Rowell officiating. Visitation is 3-4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

A native of Buchenau, Germany, he was the son of the late Lee Roy and Elizabeth Ann Wege Harrison. Mr. Harrison was a 27 year veteran of the United States Navy, was the Director of Training for Freightliner and a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Linda Gayle Day Harrison; and one son, Gary Harrison of Carrboro.

Memorials may be made to Bethesda Methodist Church, 3714 S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia, NC 28054; or American Diabetes Association, 1820 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204; or Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, Erwin Road, Durham, NC 27710.

GASTONIA -- Mr. Marvin Vincent Sewell, 40, of 410 S. Marietta St, died April 5, 2001. Visitation is 3-4 p.m. Sunday at Cleveland Funeral Services, Shelby, NC.

Sizemore, Anthony Scott
GASTONIA -- Anthony Scott Sizemore, 107 Summitt Street, died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was the infant son of Spring Sizemore and Allen Key and also survived by one brother, Marcus Key Sizemore and one sister, Sheila Ann Sizemore, all of Gastonia.

Also surviving are his grandparents, Sharon Key and Johnny Littlejohn of Gastonia, NC and Sheila Sizemore and Earnest Glenn Sprinkle of Kings Mountain, NC; great grandmothers Macie Key of Rock Hill, SC and Eloise Stewart of Kings Mountain, NC.

Graveside services will be held at Gaston Memorial Park, Babyland on Monday, April 9, 2001, beginning at 12:00 noon.

Shoe, Sadie Barringer
GOLD HILL -- Mrs. Sadie Barringer Shoe, 92, died Friday, April 6, 2001. Funeral is 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Wesleyan Church. Visitation is 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.

Payne, Virginia "Ginny" Craft
GREENVILLE -- Mrs. Virginia "Ginny" Craft Payne, 51, died Friday, April 6, 2001.

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Payne is survived by her husband, Jim Payne; son, Dr. Joey Payne and his wife, Christy Daley Payne, of Durham; granddaughter, Kaitlyn C. Payne of Durham; and sisters, Marsha Craft Tripp of Greenville and Sheila Craft Dalton of Belmont, NC.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at 2618 Jefferson Drive, Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Medical Foundation of East Carolina University School of Nursing for the Ginny Payne Scholarship Fund, 525 Moye Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858; the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center, Brody School of Medicine at ECU, 525 Moye Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858; or to the Pitt County Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O.
